I came with a group of friends who were craving for some broken rice with BBQ pork. The widely known favorite in the area is Com Tam Thien Huong; however, I absolutely abhor driving on Story Road near Viet town. So, I searched on yelp seeking the next best thing to avoid that area of town if at all possible. Fortunately, I found this place and my suggestion was accepted.
Parking wise, it seems like it can get a bit tight and overcrowded at times. I arrived at around 5PM on Sunday and a handful of spots that were open where 30 minute parking. There is a security guard that is sitting in the lot watching so the warnings of towing your car may be something you may want to be concerned with if you grab one of these spots.
The restaurant was not busy at all when we came in and had plenty of seating. The server lead us to our table and pointed to one of two seats for us to choose from. As with any broken rice plate Vietnamese restaurants, there is a wide variety of combinations to choose from. I ordered my go to broken rice place with BBQ Pork and Fried Shrimp Cake. I noticed on yelp their egg roll had the special wrapper or fried a specific way (I'm not sure how this is made :P) that I find very few Vietnamese restaurants make. So, I just had to order a few for the table. I also got some Thai Ice Tea.
The wait staff will come by and take your order on a tablet. I found that a bit more high tech than usual for the average Vietnamese restaurant. We also ordered a 2 takeout orders as well. I mention this because I found it abnormal for a Vietnamese restaurant with a Vietnamese waiter (seemed family owned) not rush the table to make their order, actually repeat the order back to make sure they got it right, and patiently gathered our menus rather than hastily grabbing it from our hands. I'm just so use to your typical Vietnamese wait staff where, intentional or not, just rude and wish for you to hurry up and leave the restaurant that I found it overall pleasant experience.
Onto the food, the BBQ Pork was okay. It definitely is not on the level as favorite of the area but can without a doubt hold its own ground. Personally, I thought there was too much rice but could have just been me that day. The fried shrimp cake, one of my favorite Vietnamese side item, was okay as well. It still tasted fine didn't have the crispy texture or appearance you would expect. The Thai Tea was pre-mixed from what I can tell. I would just warn you that it is on the sweeter side of things. But, the highlight of the meal for me were the egg rolls. I missed having these extra crispy egg rolls. I even ordered another dish as soon as we finished. Clearly home made egg rolls as they are meatier than the usual let-down egg roll you might find at other Vietnamese restaurants.
Lastly, it is the usual Vietnamese restaurant where your table has a number and you are expected to go up to the counter to pay when you are done. Again, I'm so use to being rushed and given, rude by American standard, service that I was shocked when after I paid, the person (elderly Vietnamese lady) thanked me.
While the food was a bit better than average, I will most definitely come back here for the friendly wait staff and egg rolls. read more
