Finally having Com tam Dat Thanh after trying to come here on a weekday when they're closed. They now have designated parking spots specifically for their restaurant. Parking and sped walked inside to be seated immediately. Water and menu was provided immediately and order was taken a few mins later. Ding ding, bells ringing from kitchen must mean our food is ready. The orders arrived and the worker complemented my appetite, cus I got the biggest dish, well thank you. Super delicious and be cautious with their Chili sauce cus it'll make you sweat. Washed everything down with complementary soup they provided. The worker mentioned their wall got painted red for a commercial that took place not too long ago, hence the spot looks like it got remodeled. Best Com tam spot in San Jose

Com tam thit nuong

A solid com tam place in the Bay Area! portions, taste, pricing is great here! I got com tam thit nuong, and it comes with a bunch of other proteins and sides. I was very surprised at the large sizing of this plate the picture does not do it justice! I shared this dish with my partner and we were super full afterwards. The fried shrimp cake has a super crispy coating, so crispy it was flakey! It's hard to get this one right, and this restaurant nailed it. The shrimp on the sugarcane was marinated so well so much flavor seeped through this! This is a very classic Vietnamese restaurant, don't expect the interior to be nice. As long as you are getting good food that's all that matters!

The food here is amazing. It's a little hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant to be honest with you, but sometimes these are the best. And the owners there are a mom and Pop type ownership and are very nice people. Definitely will be returning.

When I first arrived to the parking lot, I was nervous about the location. Lots of people in the parking lot being belligerent. I chose a table where I could watch my car, just for own peace of mind. The location may not be great but the food is fantastic. We came in close to closing and the food still came out piping hot and fresh. The stand out item on the plate for me was an item called Tau Hu Ky. It's a recognizable item within a com tam plate but this was my first time having the tofu skin wrapper taste so delicate and fried so crisp! The shrimp on the inside was very juicy and plump. Overall I was impressed with every item on my plate but the wrapped shrimp was my favorite. There was also a skewer of BBQ shrimp!! I would definitely come back to order another rice plate if I'm in the area! The food quality is well worth it and the portions are massive

First time here and I was not disappointed. To start with, let's talk about flavor. Everything in my order tasted amazing, from the richness of the short ribs to the outstanding crunch of the egg cake, paired with pickled onions, carrots and daikon. Good portion size , not to much and not to little . Service was good. With a smile, the man who brought me my food told me to enjoy my dinner. I could tell he genuinely ment it and was proud of serving me that plate. This is a restaurant that sets the tone of your experience with their food alone. I'm definitely going back to try more of their food when I can.

My boyfriend introduced me to his favorite com tam place growing up. I ordered com tam thit nuong with the shrimp on a sugarcane stick! I've had com tam at different places but it's safe to say, this is worth the buck. The fish sauce is sweet and you can add peppers to your liking which is so ideal and delicious! It's now one of our favorite date spots in the area. Best com tam in SJ!

We have no food photos to show because we got no food after 45 mins of waiting.
Tracie Z.

We ordered appetizers, drinks, 4 entrees to dine in and 1 dish to go. 5 total meals. We waited 45 minutes when they came out to tell us that they had NO MORE RICE. Our appetizer did not need any rice and this place is KNOWN FOR THEIR RICE DISHES. ITS IN THEIR NAME. Two other people who came in after us got their rice dishes. They offered for us to change to vermicelli noodles instead. We asked about our appetizer and they told us that it would still be another couple of minutes for that!! The order we wanted to go didn't need rice. They didn't even bother or attempt to serve us that after 45 minutes of waiting. We walked out of there after waiting 45 MINUTES FOR NOTHING. WE DIDNT EVEN GET OUR DRINKS. It's like we didn't exist or they lost our order. They stood around like deer caught in the headlights not doing anything to even try to get our food out to us. We've been coming to this place for YEARS but since it's an hour away, we wasted all that time we could have been driving. We were going to be back down there next weekend and had planned on going back because we liked this place so much. NEVER AGAIN!!! Time to find another place. Any recommendations from fellow Yelp users? Edited: 8/10/2026 After reviewing the events with a few hours of space since the events, what happened is actually even worse than what I initially wrote. There were only 10 other people in the restaurant. It was not crowded. This restaurant can likely seat 40+ people. There were THREE people helping with diners in the restaurant (2 females and a male). When we got there, there was a table of four who were already eating. Another table of 4 arrived just ahead of us, there was someone phoning in an order as we were seated and then two more people came in after us. In the 45 minutes that we were there, not a single person checked in on us. They didn't refill our water, bring the drinks we ordered, or serve our appetizers. We arrived a full hour before their listed closing time. We ordered $111.95 (4x$18.50 entrees, 1x $14.50 vermicelli entree to go, 1x $17.95 appetizer, 1x$5.50 lemonade) worth of food and drink. That was the cost before taxes and tip. Our appetizer, 5th entree, and drink did not need rice. What the people working the front end of the restaurant did do is serve food for the table of four that came in literally seconds before we did AND serve to the two tables of single diners who came in well AFTER us. I saw them bring out a third plate but didn't serve it to anyone and took it back to the back. There was another person waiting for their take out inside the restaurant and another two waiting outside when we were told that they ran out of rice. While we waited, there was a steady stream of people picking up take out. So much so my son remarked that was probably why our food was taking so long. I don't know if the kitchen was backed up because of take out orders but they should have taken care of people dining inside first. Secondly, the people just standing around the restaurant could have at the very least in the 45 minutes we sat there refilled our water or check up on us. We were sitting in the middle of the restaurant right in front of them and it was not busy. After they told us they ran out of rice, why would it take them several more minutes to bring out our appetizer and drinks after we had already sat there for 45 minutes? It is very likely they literally forgot about us. I looked back at our previous visits and we've been coming here for around six years. We come 4-5 times a year each time ordering close to or over $100 of food. We will NEVER come back again. Yelp is being funny by "reminding" me to post a picture of our food with this review. It's impossible when we got no food to show for our 45 minutes of waiting!

This restaurant is a must visit for your com tam. It's no frills, just good food and good service- everything that is a sign for a classic, well done Vietnamese restaurant. We got a few different dishes of the com tam but my favorite is always com tam thit nuong. They do season it a bit salty so don't throw all your nuoc mam on it before you taste it. The serving sizes are also huge so order knowing you'll probably take some home.

GASOLINE INSIDE MY RICE! (Com Bì, Chả, Thịt Nướng, Tàu Hũ Ky
Jonathan H.

BE CAREFUL ORDERING HERE. I had ordered the Com Tam Thit Nuong Bị Cha on DoorDash. I took a first bite of the rice and it tasted very off. I said ok maybe it had the smokey flavor from the thit nuong (grilled meat). It wasn't until I mixed up my rice and underneath had this very gray looking liquid, thinking it was maybe the oil from the charred meat, IT WAS GASOLINE!! After I mixed the bottom up you can smell the gas. My meat had a strong gas taste. My sister got grilled shrimp and you can taste the strong gas smell on hers too. I don't know if they used gasoline to replenish their grill to grill stuff but I had to toss the entire thing & submitted photos to DoorDash for a refund. The smell & taste lingered in my mouth for so long!!

#7 Com Tam Combinatin
Brian T.

Coming back to this restaurant recently was like a time machine back to my childhood. I remember every time I come, I would see the cloud formed from grilling the meat. As we enter, it still had the same interior, for better or worst. The server took a while to came. We ordered the combination plate #7. The meat was cooked fine but could had more of a char taste to it and it felt a bit more on the wet side. The crispy tofu with shrimp was crispy with more meat than I thought, compared to Com Tam Thien Huong The bi had more meat over the fat ratio which was nice. The cha was more on the salty side unfortunately. The sugar cane shrimp tasted just alright as it needed to be cooked a bit more. Overall, it was a decent meal, but I wasn't blown away by it. Overall, it was ok but I am not dying to come back here.

No frill com tam (broken rice plate). Broken rice is a vietnamese rice plate that uses broken rice (tiny rice) that you usually mix with fish oil (you don't have to but I like it that way). The rice plate typically comes with pork chop, egg cake, shrimp cake etc. This place is inside a strip mall and there really isn't much deco but it's clean and that's good enough. A lot of rice plate places are called Com Tam Thanh but so I can see why this is named such way. I think the pork chop here is bigger than the others but the other stuff such as egg cakes are not as good (but close enough). It's not particularly cheaper than other places but the best part is that this is also not as crowded as the more popular broken rice places. Service is good enough for such simple place. The place is bigger than I expected.

This establishment is more of a takeout place with its items made to order. The wait can be a bit long so it is best to order ahead online; the quoted pick up time was 25 minutes from the time the order was placed. For this visit I got their (net) eggroll plate and banh khot plate. The netted eggrolls had a good crispy wrapper texture and definitely tasted freshly made; the net outside made it more unique compared to typical Vietnamese and other Asian eggrolls which use a regular solid wrapper. The sweet fish sauce and veggies (pickled carrot and daikon, lettuce, cilantro, and mint) went really well with these eggrolls. The banh khot tasted good with a nice and soft yet slightly crunchy texture and each piece had a good sized shrimp on top. The banh khot also went well with the fish sauce and veggies provided. I highly recommend SJ Eggrolls for Vietnamese eggrolls and banh khot cravings. I know there are many other establishments selling these in San Jose but this place does a good job in terms of execution and price. This business also offers party trays and I would definitely consider catering from SJ Eggrolls if I needed a party tray in the area.

Usually the noodles are hu tieu (pho noodles) but I opted for egg noodles (mi). Variety of meats and seafood included. Mix with chili oil and soy sauce (it is a bit underseasoned) or ask for more of the sauce they use. Otherwise this was quite bomb when all mixed up. Very filling! 8/10 Bun Cha Ha Noi $28 - portion is perfect for 2 people! They give rice paper for wrapping and meats were perfectly cooked juicy and well marinated. I came for lunch on a Friday and the restaurant was approximately half full. My party was seated right away. I noticed most tables had their specialty dish, 36B on the menu, which is grilled fish with thin noodles and vegetables; this was a dish my party wanted to try. I also ordered their Vietnamese shaking beef with red rice (menu item 47). The food came quickly, in about ten minutes or so. The shaking beef came first and had a nice flavor and texture as expected for shaking beef. The dish had a bit more onions and peppers than I would've liked but still had a good amount of beef. This also came with a side soup which was nice to not overwhelm the palate with shaking beef flavor. The grilled fish was tasty with a nice crisp. The fish also tasted very good with the included noodles and greens. I could see why this is Thien Long's most popular dish because it is very good. Overall, the Thien Long menu is pretty extensive and has a lot of offerings in case you don't know what you want to eat. That being said, this restaurant does not really specialize in any particular type of Vietnamese dish so you may be better off going to Vietnam Town if you know you want a specific dish.

It's local, the food has always been good to excellent, and there are some fond memories that keep bringing us back. We came here again on a Sunday evening around 8:15pm, just before closing. Here's my updated review. Food (4 stars) * Shaking Beef (4.5 stars) - This is our kids' usual order, and they love it! The beef was cooked perfectly medium rare with a nice char on the outside while remaining tender and juicy inside. The marinade has a subtle sweetness that really complements the beef. It comes with mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. You can choose white rice or tomato rice, but my kids prefer white rice. The portion is generous enough for both kids to share, and there's even enough rice left for me! * Half & Half Turmeric Fish and Grilled Pork (4 stars) - This is one of our longtime favorites. You get the best of both worlds with their signature turmeric fish and flavorful grilled pork. The fish is consistently good, served over a bed of onions and fresh green herbs. The pork is thinly sliced and can be a little dry from cooking, but it's well seasoned and flavorful. Once you wrap everything together with the vermicelli, herbs, and vegetables in rice paper, the dryness becomes almost unnoticeable. They give you plenty of rice paper and vermicelli noodles, so you won't leave hungry. I just wish they were a little more generous with the fresh vegetables on the side. That's more of a personal preference than a complaint. * Fried Flour Cake with Egg (3.5 stars) - We ordered this as our appetizer. It's good, but not the best version I've had. The flour cake is surrounded by quite a bit of egg, making it feel more like a flour cake omelet than the traditional dish I'm used to. The accompanying dipping sauce has a nice sweet and tangy flavor that brings everything together. It's enjoyable, just not particularly memorable compared to some of the better versions I've tried elsewhere. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) * We arrived fairly close to closing time. There were only a handful of customers left, and eventually we were the last table. The staff started cleaning up around us, but we never felt rushed. I really appreciate restaurants that allow their customers to finish their meals comfortably, even when it's almost time to close. * One thing I'll never forget about this restaurant happened during the pandemic. My wife came here to pick up food, but at the time they were a cash-only business, and she didn't have any cash. Instead of turning her away, they simply told her to take the food and pay them the next time she came back! My wife went straight to the bank and returned with the money. What an incredible gesture of kindness and trust! It's those little things that make you remember an establishment for years. They now accept credit cards, by the way. ~ The ambiance is pretty typical of a casual Vietnamese restaurant. Nothing fancy, but comfortable enough for a family meal. You'll often see plenty of Vietnamese customers dining here, which adds to the authentic neighborhood restaurant feel.

With a thorough deep cleaning and some updated menus, this restaurant could create a much more welcoming dining experience. Until then, the cleanliness issues overshadow what was otherwise an average meal.
