Finding parking isn't the easiest in this area, but Phin & Bowl is a solid spot for a quick bite if you're already around. The building is a little weathered, but the interior decor is nice. It wasn't particularly busy when I visited (around 6PM), and there is bathroom and WiFi access, making it a decent place to study or work. I dropped by to pick up some shrimp spring rolls (2 + peanut sauce for ~$7). Honestly, I was a little disappointed. They were on the small side, not particularly generous with the shrimp, and the large pieces of cucumber were a little jarring. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt--I may try their coffees or other dishes in the future, but I was not particularly impressed with the spot this time around. I can't strongly recommend them, but I won't avoid the spot either. It's comfortably mid so far.

What a quaint little spot by SJSU. It is unique location situated inside an older home. The custard cloud coffee was delicious and so was the chicken rice bowl. Service was fast and friendly, assuming they are SJSU students.

Phin & Bowl a top notch Vietnamese eatery definitely hit the spot for those on a shoestring budget located near downtown SJSU. I came by on a Saturday morning light traffic ample street meter parking only a few feet away. From the looks of it Phin & Bowl is more of an old-fashioned two story bungalow than a storefront though has a large dine-in interior with a street view. Placing an order is via kiosk and one can customized tipping which is a nice feature. I chose grilled pork bánh mì with all the trimmings for only $8.95 generous portion and a tropical punch to go with it. The couple that runs this place are super nice and very attentive. Would definitely be back phở gà is my favorite chicken noodle soup so please support your local business.

I like to alternate between their noodle soups and their cold cut or chicken banh mi! So good and right near sjsu campus too

During Fanime, my friend was craving something quick and easy for lunch. Walking around, we stumbled upon this shop (which at one point was the Burrito Shop). Vietnamese sandwiches are always delicious, so we decided to get one to split between us. Five Spiced Chicken Banh Mi: A stable in Vietnamese cuisine, the five spiced chicken was seasoned well. There was no bone in my sandwich and the baguette was crunchy and fresh. The daikon and carrots were also pickled well and the entire sandwich was filling. Overall, it was a great sandwich and I can see myself coming back here again next year.

Tried this place for lunch, was not too busy at the time. Close to SJSU and downtown. Tried a chicken bowl and the pork sandwich. Both had good taste, the bowl is not too much food if you're really hungry, but having the sandwich with it fills me up. A little pricey for what you get, but I understand it cost a lot to make the food. Staff was friendly, easy to order from the kiosk. There are some places to sit inside, but made for takeout. Might come back to try other things on the menu.

Chicken Pho - April 2026

The 5 stars is for Phin & Bowl's excellent plastic soup spoons. Phin & Bowl is one of the only places downtown that give you these extra deep takeout soup spoons. Most of the other places will give you the small and shallow cheap American-style soup spoons which require you to scoop 3 to 5 times in order to get enough soup for one swallow. This is because the American style soups are thicker and pile-up higher in the spoon than the pho soups, which have lower viscosity. Out of the restaurants around SJSU, this is one of the soup places with the right spoons for the right soup. With both the Chicken Pho and the Seafood Pho, the Phin & Bowl broth tasted more natural than the more processed taste at SJSU. The broth was not as chicken-skinnish tasting as the China Chen broth, not as herbalish as the Pho Hoa broth, and not as oily as the Home Eat broth. The Phin & Bowl broth was more mellow compared with the Pho Ha Noi broth and not as ginger-based as some of the grocery-store broths are. They have a normal $16 size which is enough food for lunch, but not enough food for dinner, because I often get hungry again before 11pm and cannot sleep. So I end up buying the larger $20 to $22 pho size at other places, so I do not have to buy 2 pho bowls in one night at $16 x 2 which = $32 total, which is too much pho.

Loved their five spice fried chicken rice bowl. The chicken was very crispy, flavorful and juicy. Their tropical punch was a great pairing as well - very refreshing. Returned to try their coffee and the salted cloud coffee and black sesame coffee was great; flavor was very well balanced. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It's a cute place to study and work as well.

Shrimp & Mango Salad

I had the shrimp mango salad and one of their Vietnamese coffees. The shrimp was really good. The ingredients tasted very fresh and the vinaigrette for the salad was delicious and added some acidity. I forgot to take a picture of the coffee because I drank it so fast but definitely recommended it.

This establishment is more of a takeout place with its items made to order. The wait can be a bit long so it is best to order ahead online; the quoted pick up time was 25 minutes from the time the order was placed. For this visit I got their (net) eggroll plate and banh khot plate. The netted eggrolls had a good crispy wrapper texture and definitely tasted freshly made; the net outside made it more unique compared to typical Vietnamese and other Asian eggrolls which use a regular solid wrapper. The sweet fish sauce and veggies (pickled carrot and daikon, lettuce, cilantro, and mint) went really well with these eggrolls. The banh khot tasted good with a nice and soft yet slightly crunchy texture and each piece had a good sized shrimp on top. The banh khot also went well with the fish sauce and veggies provided. I highly recommend SJ Eggrolls for Vietnamese eggrolls and banh khot cravings. I know there are many other establishments selling these in San Jose but this place does a good job in terms of execution and price. This business also offers party trays and I would definitely consider catering from SJ Eggrolls if I needed a party tray in the area.

Food came out super fast in 5-10mins. Items Order: 10/10 Mi Nam Vang $18.75 - comes with a side bowl of soup and large pork rib! Soup was amazing broth perfectly flavored. Usually the noodles are hu tieu (pho noodles) but I opted for egg noodles (mi). Variety of meats and seafood included. Mix with chili oil and soy sauce (it is a bit underseasoned) or ask for more of the sauce they use. Otherwise this was quite bomb when all mixed up. Very filling! 8/10 Bun Cha Ha Noi $28 - portion is perfect for 2 people! They give rice paper for wrapping and meats were perfectly cooked juicy and well marinated. Their fish sauce was also quite good but overall this a wrapping platter version of bun bowls. Taste wise still on the better end of ones I've had!

I came for lunch on a Friday and the restaurant was approximately half full. My party was seated right away. I noticed most tables had their specialty dish, 36B on the menu, which is grilled fish with thin noodles and vegetables; this was a dish my party wanted to try. I also ordered their Vietnamese shaking beef with red rice (menu item 47). The food came quickly, in about ten minutes or so. The shaking beef came first and had a nice flavor and texture as expected for shaking beef. The dish had a bit more onions and peppers than I would've liked but still had a good amount of beef. This also came with a side soup which was nice to not overwhelm the palate with shaking beef flavor. The grilled fish was tasty with a nice crisp. The fish also tasted very good with the included noodles and greens. I could see why this is Thien Long's most popular dish because it is very good. Overall, the Thien Long menu is pretty extensive and has a lot of offerings in case you don't know what you want to eat. That being said, this restaurant does not really specialize in any particular type of Vietnamese dish so you may be better off going to Vietnam Town if you know you want a specific dish.

We've been coming here…read morefor years, and whenever we're craving Vietnamese food other than pho, this is one of our go-to places. It's local, the food has always been good to excellent, and there are some fond memories that keep bringing us back. We came here again on a Sunday evening around 8:15pm, just before closing. Here's my updated review. Food (4 stars) * Shaking Beef (4.5 stars) - This is our kids' usual order, and they love it! The beef was cooked perfectly medium rare with a nice char on the outside while remaining tender and juicy inside. The marinade has a subtle sweetness that really complements the beef. It comes with mushrooms, bell peppers, and onions. You can choose white rice or tomato rice, but my kids prefer white rice. The portion is generous enough for both kids to share, and there's even enough rice left for me! * Half & Half Turmeric Fish and Grilled Pork (4 stars) - This is one of our longtime favorites. You get the best of both worlds with their signature turmeric fish and flavorful grilled pork. The fish is consistently good, served over a bed of onions and fresh green herbs. The pork is thinly sliced and can be a little dry from cooking, but it's well seasoned and flavorful. Once you wrap everything together with the vermicelli, herbs, and vegetables in rice paper, the dryness becomes almost unnoticeable. They give you plenty of rice paper and vermicelli noodles, so you won't leave hungry. I just wish they were a little more generous with the fresh vegetables on the side. That's more of a personal preference than a complaint. * Fried Flour Cake with Egg (3.5 stars) - We ordered this as our appetizer. It's good, but not the best version I've had. The flour cake is surrounded by quite a bit of egg, making it feel more like a flour cake omelet than the traditional dish I'm used to. The accompanying dipping sauce has a nice sweet and tangy flavor that brings everything together. It's enjoyable, just not particularly memorable compared to some of the better versions I've tried elsewhere. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) * We arrived fairly close to closing time. There were only a handful of customers left, and eventually we were the last table. The staff started cleaning up around us, but we never felt rushed. I really appreciate restaurants that allow their customers to finish their meals comfortably, even when it's almost time to close. * One thing I'll never forget about this restaurant happened during the pandemic. My wife came here to pick up food, but at the time they were a cash-only business, and she didn't have any cash. Instead of turning her away, they simply told her to take the food and pay them the next time she came back! My wife went straight to the bank and returned with the money. What an incredible gesture of kindness and trust! It's those little things that make you remember an establishment for years. They now accept credit cards, by the way. ~ The ambiance is pretty typical of a casual Vietnamese restaurant. Nothing fancy, but comfortable enough for a family meal. You'll often see plenty of Vietnamese customers dining here, which adds to the authentic neighborhood restaurant feel.
