I don't know if Banh Mi Oven or Ben's are connected, but that being said a few things the owners can do to provide an uplifting experience. First, clean the floor or replace the flooring, provide A/C, have the kiosk but also encourage orders being taken with staff instead. I would move away from the plastic boxes and wrap the sandwiches with wax paper. The label on the order does provide a personal touch vs. making the order and yelling the # out. I gotta remember to look at Yelp first. To see this place on their Instagram you'd expect a lot better. The current 2.9 stars is pretty accurate. I feel like I'm being generous with 3 stars. First is the location. It's across from SJSU and near City Hall. That's not necessarily bad but there is a half way house / rehab center nearby. When we went a guy was lying on the sidewalk pleasing himself under his shorts. And they badly need AC. It was 75 outside, but inside it was closer to 100. One guy was working. He didn't speak great English. We asked what the SF Bread was. He asked us to point it out on the kiosk. He said it's bread with mayo and seafood. That was actually more helpful than the picture, but not much. The fries were bad to mediocre at best. The sandwiches were good but not fantastic. I don't see us going here again any time soon. There are better bahn mi places around. ------ Update: I just finished this review at 3 stars about 10 minutes ago. This spot took over one of my college core memory spots, probably for the best because growing and trying new things are likely for the best. I got two things, I got a Grilled Chicken Banh Mi, and Pork Spring Rolls. I've been around the block when it comes to Banh Mis, and damn is this a nice surprise. Pretty flavorful, good little toast of the bread, reasonable serving of meat and vegetables, and that garlic spread they put on top and let toast? PEAK. That spring roll, nice presentation, tightly wrapped, and really my only complaints are I would have liked to see them put some of those carrot and daikon in them rolls, and the peanut sauce was kinda clumpy and wasn't that rich and smooth type of consistency that I'm used to seeing. Am I sad this took the spot of BMO? Kind of, but all is quickly forgotten when you sit here and realize they've made the place look better than BMO ever did, and with pretty good selection of food! Nice seating arrangement, bright and modern, a nice place I would have went to right out of my classes in Dudley Moorhead Hall. 4 stars just because I wanted a little bit more out of my spring rolls. But that's not to knock them too bad as this place gets the clean plate stamp. read more

They have BOGO deals in DoorDash and UberEats. I ordered grilled pork banhmi 2 for $14.45 and fried egg rolls 2 for $16.92. The pork was okay (6/10), little fatty and kind of light on the marination. The bread was not crispy as they put in a plastic container so it was kind of soft/soggy by the time I ate. I was very surprised of the size of the egg rolls. One order comes with 6 pieces! Review is purely based on the banh mis as I ordered from Doordash, so no comments on parking, service, etc. Was excited to see that they have roasted pork belly and nem nuong (I don't think any other banh mi spots offer this), but everything just fell short of expectations. The banh mis came in a plastic container instead of wrapped in paper (could see some preferring that). Baguettes were not toasted so it came cold and the baguettes were kinda thick/dense (not good imo), so it was a bit tough/chewy. Also feel like they skimp on toppings. So much bread, so little meats lol The roasted pork belly was not crispy at all and the meat was pretty dry. The skin wasn't crispy, so it was kinda chewy. As for the nem nuong, flavor was lacking and overall this banh mi felt very dry to eat. Overall, I don't think the banh mis were worth it. They were a bit more expensive on doordash, but even in store, they are like $10 each (imo not very student friendly for a store being close to sjsu) For the portion and taste, I don't think it's worth it. I can get a cheaper and better tasting one in essj. I understand that they're new, so hoping to see improvements in the future. read more

The place was spacious, clean, and nicely decorated. Ordering at the kiosk was easy, and they had a good variety of banh mi, snacks, and drinks. Bathroom was very clean, too. Banh mi was flavorful and well seasoned. Loved the clear packaging for the banh mi, simple and presentable. Jasmine milk tea was good, but the boba was mushy. Vietnamese iced coffee tasted great, though even at 50% ice, it still felt like a lot. A few small things to improve: wait time was about 10 minutes for two sandwiches and a drink, bread was a bit dry and hard, and the roasted pork belly could be cut smaller. Would be even better with some charsiu-style sauce and more green onion. Even though the pork belly could be improved, we liked it the most and ended up ordering another one. Unfriendly staff. I walked into the shop today to try out these sandwiches. Looked right at the gentleman across the counter making a sandwich and i said "Hello, hows it going?". There was only one other person in the restaurant. He looked at me and completely ignored me. No "hello" back, no smile, nothing. Just looked down with a miserable face. Loved the grilled beef bánh mì with egg! The beef was flavorful and the bread was fresh and crispy. The peach tea was fragrant, refreshing, and delicious with a nice peach flavor. Came here around noon on a weekday -- not many patrons besides a couple students. I wasn't feeling too hungry so I just got the nem nuong spring rolls and an ube coffee. You order at the kiosk and your order number gets announced through this automated sound system. I also noticed that they offered promo codes for certain deals (i.e., bogo). My food and drink came out quickly. I really liked the coffee and the ube cream. You could taste the ube, and the coffee itself wasn't too sweet (I'd describe it as a slightly milkier viet coffee), so the flavors balanced out. That caffeine definitely woke me up. The spring rolls came with a peanuty hoisin sauce. I want to mention that they're 3 rolls cut in halves. There was (of course), the nem nuong inside of it, fried egg roll wrapper, vermicelli, and lettuce / mint ? Pretty standard egg roll ingredients, but it was yummy! I enjoyed the crunchy factor of the fried egg roll wrapper. Definitely a solid, light lunch choice. I would recommend anybody who's never had nem nuong to try it. They have it in the banh mi too for the people who prefer sandwiches. read more

They were also disposing of an entire trash bag full of old bread, but I guess I got there too early and got stuck with a stale roll. Maybe the sandwich is good with fresh bread, but when they are trying to squeeze every cent out of old stale bread, it makes me believe they don't care about customer service.
