Today was my first time enjoying Anderson's Roast Beef & Frozen Custard. Probably the best roast beef on weck that I've had to date (better than Bar Bill, if you ask me). The roast beef was fresh, full of flavor, the horseradish added the right amount of zest, the au jus was breaming with flavorful drippings, and the Cajun fries were so hot that they burned (that's how I love it ). A nice young lady took the time to assist me at the front counter, promptly. She was aware that it was my first time in the restaurant and guided me with a generous and gentle attitude. She told me what "most people" like and how most dress their roast beef sandwich. She made the ordering process easy and helped narrow my focus considering I was running on fumes and getting "hangry". The restaurant was clean, inside and out (even the restrooms were tidy). There were a variety of fountain drinks to choose from and the selections were unique compared to other competitors. Originally, was headed for the Taco Bell next door, but I'm sure glad my stomach and nose led me to Anderson's. Next time, I'm trying the custard and getting an extra roast beef to take home. On a Sunday evening, we didn't feel like cooking dinner. After a few ideas back and forth, we finally decided on Anderson's since my wife had never been here before. If you like her, have never been here before, think retro diner meets modern layout. They serve the classics here. Burgers, chicken, salads, sandwiches, and even hot dogs. They also have an ice cream parlor with so many offerings that you can get dinner and dessert all at once. There is a nostalgic spot back in our hometown just like Anderson's and that's what it reminds us of when we were there. The service is great here. They make everything fresh and quickly. We got our food to go and it was still hot when we got home. The grilled chicken sandwich was cooked perfectly. The chicken was juicy and the toppings were fresh so it gave a good crunch from the lettuce and tomato. The salad was so large and filling and you can never go wrong with their fries. We also got a small vanilla soft serve for our son and he loved it. It was a very good soft serve with a great flavor and thickness. I was able to just walk up, they set my order on the table, and that was that! Perfect! This particular location has a really cool nostalgic vibe with the neon signs and such. We were there today to celebrate Greta Anderson's 103rd birthday with a $1.03 frozen custard cone. The Anderson's on Union Rd. had cinnamon as their special flavor of the day today. While the cinnamon was not on the same frozen custard machine with the chocolate so I could not have a chocolate/cinnamon twist, I asked for a sugar cone with chocolate on the bottom and cinnamon on the top. I don't usually give a poor review in fact last time I was here on Union Road it was really decent as I recall. However after today I will not ever go to any Andersons location. Period. My friend and I were ignored by staff as we waited to order ice cream in the desert line. In fact the girl who was there turned away without saying a word and she proceeded to pull a burger out of hot water! Yep I saw it as she lifted it out with a pair of tongs and dripping water as she placed it on a bun. That's a first for me. . Another customer who was waiting also was approached by a different staff member. They told her I was ahead of them so that clerk replied that I was in a different line and nor did she offer to help me or get someone. Finally the burger maker acknowledges me and comes to get our order. As soon as she rang it up she flipped the screen seeking a tip to add. Tip her for what? It was a take out order with lousy customer service and a phony smile feigning nice with a closed lip smile. Oh hell no. I'm typically a generous tipper especially if deserved or it was apparent that they were working and genuinely cared. Not here. I did ask my friend to leave a couple of bucks in the cash tip bucket but $11+ for 2 medium soft serve cones with awful service that was generous. Finally I found the menu literally above my head at the counter. I commented to my friend how I hated reading menus like that and another customer heard me saying she agreed. Come on, do better Andersons. So then we went to find a seat outside on a patio. Guess what? No seats outside. Not a table or chair in sight at an ice cream stand. Anderson's is a Buffalo staple! Their roast beef sandwiches are great, and pretty authentic for the area in my opinion. The real show stopper is their ice cream! They have hard and soft ice creams, along with a wide variety of sundaes, Arctic swirls, and other delicious concoctions. My favorite is the Reese's Pieces Sundae which comes with vanilla custard, hot fudge, peanut butter sauce, and Reese's pieces. You can add whipped cream for a small additional amount. It is slightly expensive in my opinion ~$10 for 2 sundaes), but very good none-the-less! Anderson's also has a variety of frozen cakes. Yes, Anderson's is a chain, but it's a WNY chain, and there's a certain thing about it that makes it pretty great. The beef wasn't as good as the beef at the Main St., Wmsvl. location. Tasted old, kind of dry. Plus the typically delectable Costanzo's weck roll seemed toasted and too was dry. Weird. Their gravy was also sub par- tasted too flour-y and like it was diluted, again compared to the Main St. location. Overall disappointed in the beef, roll, and gravy but the curly fries were as delicious as ever. Maybe it was an off day. I've eaten here plenty of times and it didn't seem this blah. Also, the dining area was dirty- no clean tables- and the back rests on the chairs are uncomfortable. I love my Anderson's but this time it wasn't as good as at other visits/locations. Building had a clean atmosphere but at that time I did notice one lucky fly who got in. The ice cream custard is a good deal, but the roast beef...I'm not too sure. The roast beef slices tasted fresh with ample horseradish flavors(optional) in it. The bun was sufficiently decorated with large chunks of salt. This was just what the doctor ordered during a long cross-country road trip. It's only a mile off the I-90 with easy parking. They have been making ice cream since 1946, and unbelievably, have not started using High Fructose Corn Syrup. They still use REAL sugar!! And we couldn't believe all of the options available. Name a frozen desert type, and they have it. Ice cream sandwiches, cakes, sundaes, several fancy cone options, a 5 scoop sampler for $6.59 ($6.89 if you want it "smothered in sundae sauce"), milkshakes (make it a malt for 50 cents extra!), smoothies, etc etc. We didn't try the food, but it looked good too.
