Wow! We usually love Nick Charlap's so we were excited for our first visit of the season. Ordered 2 burgers, 2 fries, a milkshake, and a slushy. Waited a VERY long time and the milkshake came out. Waited MUCH longer and they passed out our order, but only got ONE fry. Asked about the Slushie and it was only then that we were told that the machine wasn't working so asked for another milkshake instead. Sat down to eat our "partial" order and both burgers were COLD, not even lukewarm. They apologized and said they would remake. Finally after waiting again, a girl came to the window and said, "What were you waiting on?" I pretty abruptly said, "Just about everything. We got 2 cold burgers and never got our 2nd fry." Several minutes later the 2nd fry comes out and several minutes later again, our remade burgers. The girl apologized saying someone never took the burgers out of the freezer from last night. Sat down, AGAIN, to eat .. only to find that the 2 new burgers were also cold. Finally asked for our money back and had to eat elsewhere. Awful start of the season! While we were there, another customer also returned 2 cold burgers and asked for his money back. That's 6 burgers in the garbage! Do better! read more

This was my first time here as an adult & since it's been named Nick Charlap's. I ordered a double cheeseburger, a hot dog & onion rings to split. My son got that special cheeseburger with hot dogs on it. The hot dog & onion rings were pretty good. The burger was so-so. Then for dessert, I got the buttercrunch crumble which was pretty good. My problems were, it took a very long time to make the food & the sundae. My biggest problem were the prices. They are WAY OVERPRICED ! Everything costs too much money. So, although things may have been yummy, I can't afford to eat there again. The food's not THAT good. read more

Solid homemade hard ice cream! They're still open during COVID - perfect to get a treat at the window and eat in your car or one of the picnic tables as there hasn't been many crowds recently. They have over 25 flavors but my favorite has been the strawberry cheesecake - so rich and creamy - the only thing that could make it better is if there were some cheesecake chunks in there as well! One review mentioned that their hard ice cream has a soft consistency sometimes. This has happened once in the middle of summer but my other 5+ visits have yielded great ice cream consistency with no complaints. I absolutely love this place, we go ALL the time during the summer. My biggest complaint is the hours. They close at 9PM on Saturdays, when the weather is amazing. We would love to go every Saturday after dinner and back yard games and walk there as a family, and get some ice cream. read more

I've only had ice cream here. But, every time it's been pretty good. Sometimes, even if it's not too busy, the staff seem overwhelmed - but they are young, so that might be part of it. Prices are fine for ice cream and you do get a good portion for each size. They have a great variety of things. Their sundaes and such might be a little pricier than they need to be, but it's not too bad. Also, hardly ever a huge crowd! So, it seems to be a secret of sorts. read more

Things I forgot to do: Review Nick Charlap's after i stopped there. Well here we go! I first stopped at the brand new Nick Charlap's Ice Cream location on Elmwood a few weeks back (2 maybe?). This was actually my first time going to any location and I'm not quite the fan. On top of providing all the milkshakes, cones, and sundae needs this place also provides you with hot dogs, hamburgers, and even something called the "burger dog" which I absolutely will be ordering on my next visit. We came around 4PM and the place had a goon number of people both in line and seated outside eating. The line moved rather quickly and before you know it I was ordering a two scoop cone of my birthday cake and something else which even though I don't remember the name of, I remember thinking it was absolutely delicious. Nick Charlap's seems like a reliable, tasty ice cream shop that can not only take care of dessert, but provide an easy lunch or dinner as well. What I do know is that this plan won me over and I will definitely be a returning customer! read more

My fiance and I live right around the corner from this location and we absolutely love it here! We've been about 5 times now and it's been nothing but good experiences. The ice cream selection is incredible, as are the actual flavors. Our favorite is Salted Caramel Truffle. It's as delicious as it sounds. The staff is always friendly and consistent. They're quick, too. There are usually really nice clientele also, usually with their families and dogs in tow. It's a nice place to strike up a conversation with your neighbors or just relax on one of the picnic tables and indulge in your ice cream. A little understaffed today and that could've been handled slightly better, but the treats were delicious and the staff did the best they could while keeping organized. Only thing I would change is bringing Pineapple Dole Whip to the menu! A little disappointed it was MIA - especially in a place like the Disney fanatic riddled Northtowns! I really feel like Nick Charlap's is an ice cream lovers paradise! They have five locations, mostly in the south towns (think Boston, Angola, etc) which I'm guessing is why I had not heard of them until recently when driving down Elmwood in Kenmore and seeing their sign. After some investigation on yelp and Facebook, I saw that they have CRAZY soft serve flavors and knew that we had to come here. The flavors rotate regularly and they serve up different options at each location. On our first trip, the Elmwood location was serving Blue Moon soft serve. My husband is a sucker for soft serve and though he does enjoy the traditional flavors, the crazy ones make his ice cream loving heart sing. He got the Blue Moon and said it tasted like a cross between blue raspberry and fruity pebbles. YUM. I opted for one of their hard ice creams. I don't normally get hard ice cream at shops like this because most places serve Perry's, which I can buy at any store by the tub. But, they don't serve Perry's here! Their hard ice cream is homemade!!!! I got the orange pineapple with hot fudge. I love orange pineapple, only one other shop in the area does it, to my knowledge. It is light and sweet and perfect in the summer!! They also have food here, such as hot dogs, burgers, etc. I saw that they even maker burgerdogs (a burger topped with a hot dog)! I recently gained a newfound love and respect for frozen custard. Living in the Albany, NY area, I had no idea that custard was such a big deal in Western NY, but now I see why! Stopped at Nick Charlap's for a cone while in the area and the coffee custard I got was not only delicious in flavor, but the texture of the custard was so light and fluffy. Let me start off by stating that I was extremely excited for Charlap's to open up on Elmwood Ave, especially since I'm walking distance from this location. I visited the location in Hamburg about 2 years ago and thought it was the best ice cream in Buffalo (at the time). I've visited this location twice since it opened and I'm greatly disappointed. The first time I visited, I ordered a small cone of the almond chocolate coconut. The ice cream was set to be a success, but it immediately fell of the cone...it was that soft! I went back in line and the server kindly gave me another one. I finally tried it and the flavour was probably a 3.5/5. It was extremely soft and full of ice chunks and mysterious pink colouring. I visited a second time this past weekend and ordered the birthday cake. This time, the ice cream was even softer- almost like a soft serve! I imagining that they simply have an issue with their freezer. The flavour was good, perhaps a 4-4.5/5, but not the best. It was a vanilla base with frosting and sprinkles. I wish there was actual cake pieces. Unfortunately the ice cream was so soft both times that I was unable to take a picture. I had to begin eating my ice cream as soon as it was handed to me. My mom and brother-in-law rave about this place. Both have tried the cookie dough and love it. Unfortunately I have not tried this flavour so I cannot testify to this. Maybe I'm just trying the wrong flavours... The sizes are fairly large. A baby is one scope, a small is two scopes, and a medium is three scopes, etc. The prices are decent. For hard ice cream, there's probably about 25 flavours. A variety! Unfortunately, there is nothing for lactose free or sugar free people... Overall, I REALLY want to like this place, but I simply cannot. I definitely cannot highly recommend it. The ice cream has been extremely soft/melted for both of my visits and this issue needs to be remedied in order for customers to enjoy the ice cream. read more

I have heard about the location in Hamburg many times and never ventured out there. I finally rode my bike on over to Nick Charlap's on Elmwood in Kenmore to take a taste for myself. I ordered a small (generous portions) peanut butter chip yogurt and a peanut butter fudge. Together they were a great combination. Nick Charlap's is a very nice ice cream and hotdog stand. Social distancing was done very well with dining under a large striped awning! I stopped with my grandson to buy him a hotdog and fries. The young man who waited on us asked if I wanted the buy one get one free hot dog special. Well of course I did!! Problem was he charged me for both and I had to correct the problem with another worker. He did the same thing to a customer behind me. The hot dog was good enough but the fries were not at all crisp, in fact they were beyond soggy. Needs much improvement. My first mistake was thinking I was going to get a great burger. Did not realize their specialty was ice cream. Took my daughter, granddaughter and her little friend. Chicken mc nuggets were very good, chicken sandwich was bland with lots of fat gobs, role was soft and uneventful. The hamburg I ordered was flat in size (reminiscent of any other fast food variety), and flat in taste in an oblong shaped sort of way. Standard fries and sweet potatoe fries were crisp and tasty. There were not any little containers to fill with ketchup or mustard to bring back to the table. You had to season at the window. When we asked for a container to bring leftovers home, we were given an ice cream cup with a plastic domed lid. In all fairness, I may go back to try the ice cream...Just out of curiosity. I am not expecting much but I think they need to step it up to be able to compete with other fast food stands. read more
