I don't want to give a bad review because the ice cream tastes great and I love the idea of this place and will definitely be back to try something else. My husband got a cookie monster and loved it too btw. But I got The Samoan... Let me preface this critique by saying that I love coconut, real shredded coconut; toasted coconut; coconut chunks, anything coconut flavored; German chocolate cake is my favorite, etc. Churn was out of vegan coconut soft serve this night too which was sad so I had vanilla. I don't think that would have mattered though because the problem with The Samoan is the texture you get when you mix both toasted coconut and cacao nibs into ice cream. At first the texture was kind of an interesting experience and also kind of funny and then it became less and less amusing as I ate more of it. First thing first my biggest problem and pet peeve was that they had a menu with about 8 items and six off them were crossed off because they didn't have the ingredients Danm shame. Ice cream has been tricky for me lately (not cheese though, hopefully never cheese) so when I saw that they had a coconut soft serve made with coconut milk, I had to give it a try. $2 for a baby cone, but it was so rich, I still couldn't finish (that may have had something to do with a cupcake I'd had earlier). The texture was fascinating, not in a bad way. It almost felt like a cross between traditional soft serve and ice cream. My son had a mint condition. Stopped here while walking down Hertel with yelp bud Teresa and really enjoyed the experience! They make their own ice cream which is always a plus for me when I go out, and they are committed to making their ice cream from natural, grass fed cows which is pretty cool. They even have dairy free options. They have a variety of soft serve options, from cones, to sort of flurries, to sundaes to specialty cones. I opted for the take 6 which features chocolate soft serve covered in pretzels, peanuts, toffee and caramel sauce. It was a delicious combination! If you love, or think you might like a sweet and salty combination this one is definitely for you! With the pandemic procedures still in place you do not actually enter the building. They have a table with a cash register in the door so you give your order there, they have signs on the windows with their selections, and then the worker will make it and bring it up to you so that the waiting is all outside. They have markings on the concrete to aid in social distancing. On our way Teresa told me they make their waffle cones from scratch and we were super excited to get those. Unfortunately freshness also means they might not have any at a particular moment which happened when we visited, hopefully next time I stop by they will! This place is a treat! read more

It comes with strawberry soft serve dipped in strawberry, lavender shortbread, and lemon zest. So good and refreshing! The toppings were sooo crunchy and really hit the spot. The portion was huge and I had to take the rest home. For $4, you really can't beat that price for the quality that you get. Really good, no complaints. Pulled up around 8pm on a Friday night, I don't think there was a line or anything. Cute, clean place attached to Lloyds. Bright atmosphere. Quick friendly service. Probably not enough space for a big group, but great for stopping in with a friend or two. Not a super big menu but everything is customizable. You can order using the touchscreen computer pad or by talking to the employee. The touchscreen option was super easy to use. I want to say we were served in less than 5 minutes. My ice cream was gooood and not outrageously priced. You can tell everything was freshly made and very quality! The churro was loveeelyyyy. I haven't had a churro this good since Cali! Not everybody can get them right, so I highly recommend. Just the right kind of crispy on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. Churn has been on my list to visit for some time now and I finally had the chance to stop by. It's such a cute little place and the decor is adorable. I am a huge fan of anything strawberry shortcake so I decided to try the strawberry short cone. At first bite you get the taste of the strawberry and then an odd burst of lavender, which caught me off guide. Clearly my need for ice cream caused me to not read the description entirely. I got the De La Lloyd which is soft serve with pieces of Lloyd's Aztec brownie all over the outside. It was yummy, but I didn't love the spicy kick with the sweet ice cream. I used to write my ice cream experiences down in a Churn-al, but after awhile I would feel a longing, a Churning, to put them somewhere that everyone could see them. My ice cream journey could be described as spectacular. It's been my own Incredible Churn-ey, if you like. I've had 1 threatening letter regarding my negative review of Lloyd's (from a fan), and a couple of negative/highly defensive responses from owners/employees, but I already promised myself I'd pretend all that didn't happen when reviewing this, and was genuinely hoping to give it 4 or even 5. 3 at worst, if I didn't like it. But I really, really realllllly didn't like it, and thus, the hype bothers me. But I'll say it right now. I really hope I don't have to deal with any drama because of this review. That's not something I feel like people should have to worry about when reviewing places - but it is. So I'm half expecting it, and no I don't welcome it or enjoy it. In fact when people send me very nice responses to bad reviews, I sometimes even raise the star rating. Edit.. Even though the hate mail literally already started (from a fan), I'm upping it to a 3 based only on the product. Will try the cortado soon to see if it can get a 4. But let's get on with it. You know the funny thing is that sooner or later the people that own Lloyd's Taco are going to think that I just don't like them and that no matter what they do I'm going to give it a low rating. That is not the case whatsoever. Otherwise I'd have stopped trying their sh** by now. No, I genuinely went into this place with really high hopes. I was like okay - I may despise their faux-Mexican products (virtually all of them), but here's something I can get into. Here's hair something that they have a good chance of doing right. After all - Who can mess up soft serve? Well I'll tell you what - a lot of people can mess up soft serve, and a lot of people do, but nevertheless, at these prices I expected at least something average. The soft serve itself tastes cheap, basic. I adore Milwaukee Custard, for example, and you can get lots of excellent versions of that in Buffalo and Rochester. I even like the hyped up, overpriced "Big Gay Al's" in NYC, which is really just soft serve - but it's very good soft serve. They, too, emphasize the toppings, but the base ice cream is excellent. The base ice cream here tastes like the cheapest, blandest Mr Whippy/Perry's soft serve imaginable. Like they literally went for the cheapest product because once they put all the toppings on it and jack it up to "gourmet pricing" (over $4 for a small, over $5 for a large, after tax, and they're smaller than the portions others serve, which is fine with me but wouldn't be if you're used to big ice cream portions), people will swallow it, figuratively and literally. And they do. People don't know any better. Crap soft serve with decent toppings charging insane amounts, and welcome to capitalism, ladies and gents. You can pull the wool over everyone else's eyes, but not mine. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't good either. Not even okay. Kinda bad. The majority went in the trash. Lake Effect down the road (seasonal) sells soft serve, and it's exquisite - and cheaper. Poutine And Cream across the street has similarly expensive ice cream, but it's homemade and it's damn amazing. Antoinette's on Transit is even better. Hibbard's in Lewiston has heavenly, miraculous frozen custard. So Buffalo is a bit of a hotbed. Over in Rochester, there's Abbott's. There's a location in WNY too. It's insanely good. So basically - why even eat this. Yet I bet you they make more money than almost any of those places. Twice the price and a tenth of the quality and taste. The reason it gets 2, not 1, is because it's marginally better than the garbage served next door as food. Hopefully the millionaires running these places don't take this personally. It's about their products, not them. Everyone else (almost everyone) seems obsessed with their products so who cares what I think, really. They're doing wonderfully for themselves - good for them and all their fans. For me it's kinda like, people who give Shake Shack 4 or 5 stars... or Wendy's, Five Guys, Mighty Taco... can't really take them seriously, never will. Sorry. People who give Lloyd's (or Churn) 5 stars, or even 4, makes me sort of avoid your other glowing reviews because in my cynical, judgy world, is not really possible to think this is amazing, and also have good taste, or taste that I would ever find any synchronicity with. 2 stars because it's not a national chain yet. Neither is Lloyd's but it's on its way. The extra star is simply out of loyalty to something that is, for better or worse, intrinsically Buffalo. Or, is now, anyway. Thanks everyone. A lot. I should have known better than to expect anything from this place. You live and you churn. read more

Voted the best ice cream place in the city for 2018 and 2019! Their menu is very interesting, the core of it is brownie, pistachio, caramel, fruity pebbles, and banana. They have many variations of those items including sundaes, arctic swirls, specialty cones and regular cones. This time around I decided to get the caramelicious! It was delicious but I wish there was more banana or toppings. There is just a bit too much vanilla ice cream compared to the toppings themselves. For being as popular of ice cream shop as it is, they could use an extra employee to cut service time. It took about 20 minutes from getting in line to getting served. I did come at a busy time around 7:30 but it was the same for the last time I came. I would come back again for sure! The next thing I want to try is their flower child churned up item! If you plan to sit and chat for an hour or so, it could be worth the cost but overall it wasn't somewhere to be frequented for an ice cream fix. They also serve hot drinks like coffee and espresso etc but again, the cost was pretty inflated. Attached to Lloyds taco restaurant and separated by an open doorway, I see the draw of hanging out here but again the value just isn't there. It is great as a trendy spot to grab a bite and hang but once in a while but if prices were just more reasonable I feel they could double their business easily. Very good vegan ice cream! They only have a couple of vegan items on their menu but the one we got was good. Forgot the name, but we got the sundae with the brownie and salted walnuts. The coconut milk-based ice cream was excellent, and I was glad the walnuts weren't candied, but instead had just enough salt to cut through. Is the cow they milk to make such awesome ice cream named Churn? Does Lloyd live on a dairy farm? If you think being a super-devoted Lloyd lover is a little biased, then keep that in mind when reading this review because, well, Lloyd is life. I had the honor of checking this place out during their soft opening, and have been back a few times since. I think their soft serve has the potential to contend for the best in the city. It's not too overly heavy or creamy, so it's completely possible to just eat two sundaes without thinking twice (something I may have accidentally found myself doing at the soft opening. TONS of credit for their creativity and unique sundaes - they've recently added churros to some of them, which are OUT OF THIS WORLD by the way. Their sundaes are probably the best option you could go for if you're looking for something unique. A highlight: I've had the chance to sample some of their matcha soft serve as well, and holy toledo - if you're a fan of tea you are going to LOVE it. We decided to finally visit Churn on Hertel. It is in our neighborhood, but somehow, we never got around to visit. Because of covid, you're not going in the store, but order at a table at the front door. We found out there was actually only 1 person working there! She took our order, and 2 orders after that and then started to work on our sundaes. "Just" 20 minutes later we could enjoy our soft serve. We both had the "Mint Condition" sundae with Chocolate soft serve, Cocoa crumbs, Chocolate chips and Fresh mint. It was worth the wait. A very nice sundae with plenty of chocolate crumbs and chips. There was a hint of mint, but it was not really obvious. Beside the fact that Churn was understaffed (20 min is a long, long wait for a sundae in my opinion) it is worth going there. Our sundaes were very good. I am not sure whether the price,$5.49 for the regular, was commensurate with sundaes in other ice cream shops, but it was a nice sized serving. The problem was that there was only one employee there at 1:30 p.m. She had to take the orders and then go make the sundaes or ice cream cones. It took us 30 minutes to get our sundaes. I think Churn had a few small tables inside and out on the sidewalk, they are no longer there. One has to walk down the sidewalk or get in the car and leave the area due to Covid-19. The way they were running things it was like there were 109 customers instead five. There were two people working. One was cashing people out and asking me if I ordered or was waiting to order nine times. The other was making ice cream. Maybe from scratch and that's why it took so long. Whatever the reasoning it was the wait was crazy. I muttered a little prayer of thanks because we got our orders in before a couple of Karen's who left their families twenty feet away and had no problem walking back and forth mid order to describe the menu to them.
