Our family went here for lunch this afternoon, September 21. This place was recommended by my Nephew who has been here a few times in the past. Amrutha Vilas is now our goto spot for South Indian food! I can't remember what all we ordered but everything was outstanding! I do remember my daughter's Pav Bhaji was the best Pav Bhaji that I've tasted! The service was excellent as was the demeanor of the staff. It seems to be a family run operation and that was evident by the hospitality of the service. The interior decor was very pleasant as well... Clean and spacious. Food is amazing. Service is okay. Ambience is descent. You have to order food at the register and they will bring food to the table. They don't serve water, spoons or forks. You have to get it, which was odd. It was my first time here and they don't tell anything. We just got the food on the table without spoon, fork or water. How are we supposed to know in the first visit. After few minutes i asked for spoons and then realized we have to get it. But food was very good. Will try some more items next time. read more

Went there about 6 weeks ago to meet few friends for a casual dinner. They suggested it as they had eaten there before. Ambiance was very simple but the food more than made up for it. They were jam packed and there were a lot of people picking up food go as well.We ordered masala dosas and ghee karam idli which after I ate the idlis with the delicious peanut chutney and sambar- I was hooked! After that I got strong cravings for that specific menu item and ordered it a couple of times with extra sambar when I have had casual guests dropping by my home. It is usually very well liked. Highly recommend this place if you want simple but very tasty vegetarian dishes. I plan to try different items on their menu next time. read more

My wife and I discovered this gem yesterday. We have been looking for a regular Indian restaurant that serves dosas and this one specializes in South Indian cuisine. We ordered the Masala Dosa. The dosa was cooked perfectly. The ginger chutney, sambar and tomato chutney were fresh and delicious. We returned... Our first Masala Dosa was great. We returned yesterday for lunch. The potato filling was even better. This one had mustard seeds added. It was even better. Each of their chefs have a good hand. The peanut chutney was really tasty. This review has been overdue a long time. I was hosting and event in January and had asked another very popular South Indian restaurant to cater ( M*E*). I had booked them at least a couple of moths in advance. However a month before the event I called the other restaurant to finalize the menu and they said they were busy that time and will call me back. I called twice after and received the same response. With only a week left to my event I realized that The other guys were not reliable. I called Amrutha Vilas for catering and they came through. They catered delicious breakfast and had included all seven ware needed. The delivery was done on time and the staff was super courteous. Plus they were priced way better than the other business. We went on Saturday night total party of four and ordered Idli, Vada and Masala dosa. We waited more than 35minutes and no food. We talk to manager and finally we got food for only one person. Again waited for long time and complained and got food for second person. Again waited for an another half hour and no food for two people. At this point we were hungry and frustrated. I got up and complain to front counter and apparently they have lost our order.they were running around at front counter. We asked them to cancel the order and give the refund and they couldn't do that either. They asked me for our receipt and we gave them finally we got our order after another 10 minutes. Meanwhile other two people in the party were done with their dinner. We felt it lacked the proper supervision. No such thing as a customer service and courtesy. They only had a two cook and 4 to 5 people outside running around. They need more cook specially in the weekend. No sorry or nothing. They need to learn how to run the business and keep customers happy. We felt Mayalapore has a great service and food comes very fast. read more

I had them cater a live dosa and chole puri station for a party last weekend, and it was absolutely amazing! The food was excellent -- all my guests kept raving about how delicious everything was. Ordered Thali, paneer dosa, poori. Food used to be authentic and automatic many months back. It's the same menu and prices since then but The subtle taste & flavors and freshness are missing this time from many curries and sambar. Looks like kitchen is replaced with a medicore chef. Poori is ok, but Paneer tasted very old and spoiled. Came from Long distance with high expectations but disappointed . Hopefully they will turn around soon. read more

Very Good Ambience and tasty food. I recently visited Amrutha Vilas and it was an absolute delight! The flavors were authentic and reminded me of home-cooked meals. Tasty addition to San Ramon. A casual little spot with indoor and outdoor seating, it's located in a plaza. Everything tasted fresh. It's hard to find places that do dosa and other items, I appreciate having another option. I think it would be good if they re-do the menu to include descriptions, for now they are a new business and getting up and running. I would recommend descriptions, noting what's gluten free, and what's vegan on the menu. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Tbh it didn't top Vik's for me, but it was still good. I would come back if I'm in the area. We got the karam idly, pesarattu masala dosa, and paneer parota. A warning some of the side items are quite spicy, specifically the side soup and the chutney. They warn you though. I like a few more chutney options as it can be tiring to have the exact same ones for each dish and ime not all the dishes get the same chutneys. We happened to be in Dublin for some errand and got hungry. So we did what one does... use yelp to find a place open at 3:30 with 4 or more stars and 1st hit was Amrutha Vilas. So we headed there with high hopes and growling stomach. This review is for entire experience. Food (taste only): ***** (5 stars). I orders Mysore Masala Dosa and it was fresh, crispy, well cooked and overall pretty delicious. Food (overall): *** (3 stars). So the above review started with 1st bite and lasted until I got to middle part. It was FULL of oil on both sides. It took me 6 (yes 6) napkins to absorb the oil and then I gave up and just left the "masala" part. On top of that the quantity of sambhar and chutney was too little to enjoy properly. Overall I came out rather wanting more and unsatisfied. Ambiance: ***** (5 stars). It is a pretty chill ambiance. No frills. Person at counter had a big smile on her face and helped me break the logjam of 'Mysore Masala' or 'Rava Masala'. Other: * (1 star). The table, we want to sit at, happened to be dirty. So we request if it could be cleaned. And of course, the cleaning was performed, but minimal possible. Afterwards, we used napkins to wipe it further and napkins came out grey. Furthermore, the floor below the table had big crumbs of dosa and such from previous guest along with plastic spoon. It was just not cool. On top of that, apparently this is a totally self-service restaurant - take your own cutlery, water, napkins etc. , which is totally ok. Yet, they asked for Tip at the time of ordering...Why? I thought there would be service and hence gave decent tip, only to realize that there was none. This just felt disingenuous. TL;DR: I don't think we would visit this place again, even though the dosa (corners, as I was not able to try the middle part) and tomato chutney was tasty. read more

The best South Indian food in bay area...for sure. I love cooking and make excellent sambhar and masala dosa but this place beats my cooking. It opened recently and we have been to the place around 10 times already. Just excellent food at great prices. Even our little kids love their come dosa. To top it off, the service is excellent too and Anu always stops by to ask about the service and if we need anything else. They are also doing great job setting up the patio. Delicious and authentic food, friendly service, and reasonable prices. There were lots of Indian people eating there which was a great sign. Bookmarking this place because I'm definitely coming back! South Indian cuisine can be spicy. Fortunately, the server was very kind and helped recommend dishes that weren't too spicy to fit our mild to moderate spice tolerances. The entire menu is vegetarian but meat eaters (like me) will find the food very satisfying and filling! We ordered a masala dosa (absolutely wonderful and will get again), a combo plate that had idly, vada, and pongal, and a refreshing mango lassi. Service was amazing! We got seated very quickly and order was taken within minutes. Food came out 10 mins later. Food was fresh and had good flavor. We were craving authentic Andhra food tonight and decided to have dinner here. Upon entering, you choose a table if you're dining in, use the table number to place and pay for your order, and the food is then served to you and you are expected to clean up after yourself. The lady at the counter seemed disinterested and somewhat condescending. Despite this, the food was served promptly. We ordered Andhra Bandi Dosa, Ghee Idly, Mysore Bonda, Punugulu, Ghee Karam Masala Dosa, and Thali. The food was truly authentic, fresh, and flavorful, with excellent chutneys, sambar, and accompaniments. Tea is available for free if you enjoy tea with your meal. Been here twice so far and both times the food was fresh and tasted great! Had their thali during my recent visit and it was the best thali I had around the area. I may be partially biased here when I say the spicy butter milk brought back memories of my childhood as it used to be a reward when we won cricket matches in summer. The food is affordable (in this day and age) and I couldn't recommend them enough. If you have grown up eating Telugu food you'd love it. Very impressed. We live in San Francisco so we have access to really great food across cultures. This place is superb and the prices are super fair, even too low if anything. We tried a variety of dosas and all were great. The sambar is absolutely superb. All the chutneys and sides are excellent. The outdoor seating is comfortable and clean. They accommodated a large party of 8 and the service was great. They were super busy but did. A great job getting us all settled. She came by to check on us at least 5 times. I appreciate the "semi self serve" as she put it - getting napkins and water refills myself is much easier. The combination of accommodating a large party quickly and seamlessly, the comfortable tables, the good food, the reasonable prices, the high quality, and the nice service = 5 stars. A nice little gem tucked away in a strip mall. Casual dining with delicious and tasty food. The menu was extensive, but I went for their Thali. For under $14, you get 14 items of different South Indian dishes inspired by the Andrah region. The food has a perfect level of medium spiciness and tasted like it was made fresh. I liked every single item in the thali with the highlights being the spicy buttermilk, beans, curry, and curd rice. The servers were great and very friendly. Highly recommend you try this place out!
