Sambar . But tastes like daal

This review is for the place ammas kitchen : Newark branch I don't know why it does not exist on yelp .If should and the other ammas kitchen franchise must consider closing this one down First of all , This place should not be called ammas kitchen . I dont think this name suits the food or service This place is an abomination in the name of food . One of the worst places I have been to. We ordered fish meal , gobi65, baby corn 65, onion Rava dosa , idle sambar , Vada sambar and filter coffee It took 1 hour for us to get the food after ordering . We were almost about to leave the place .They didn't have that much of a rush . Maybe they were understaffed Only good thing here was the menu which is enticing enough for you to order . All Food is inedible Gobi 65 was just fried gobi. I have had better gobi 65 with some flavor elsewhere Baby corn 65 had too much flavor to the extent that I could not taste the baby corn itself. Tasted like bhindi fry. Ridiculous Fish meal was very bad . Fish masala had to much salt . Felt like they gave me stale preserved fish from months ago . But at that point the damage was already done . I had already eaten 4-5 bites . And I was in a super hunger state . So even if I get food poisoning I thought I might as well eat at this point Sambar did not seem to have sambar masala . It was just daal . So basically dosa was bad Idli sambar and Vada sambar looked like dal.Having tasted the sambar I could not get myself to taste that The menu has selective good pics and I wonder if they even serve that here They missed giving the filter coffee till the end and they had the audacity to ask us if they missed serving anything At the end I felt like i was already scammed so I went to check if they are billing me correctly . Because at this point the food was not good and that's the only thing I had control over after being hungry for 2 hours . To my suprise that person missed adding 2 items to the bill . Given the bad level of food quality I kind of felt bad correcting it . When I went back to wash my hands I saw that they use canola oil . I don't think that's healthy .i don't think they use any flavors too . I think they just use canola oil and salt and sell old food for days . My honest advice if you didn't get it till now : Never go here . Even if your life depends on it

I have ordered Take Away from here a couple of times and also tried their Banana Leaf meal recently, and overall the experience was pretty good. Most of items we tried tasted good. Service was not bad and definitely a good option for South Indian Cuisine in Edison. Decor and atmosphere is just average.

Always gotten take out from here and my go-to order is the fish fry (king fish/pomfret). The fish is lightly coated with spices and fried, reminiscent of something I had growing up. Pairs great with steaming white rice. I haven't tried their other fare but it's very pocket friendly and I know some people who swear by it.

Love the food! Biryani is very much Karnataka style rather than andhra style. Chicken curry is awesome and with bones. Loved the medu vada and idly. Not much of an ambiance but very good food!

Visited the new ammas kitchen restaurant and we just loved it .. 5/5 overall :) Absolutely awesome food. Cheap and best . We love the breakfast combo and all items here ... Especially the chutneys . The red/ peanut chutneys were out of the world. Vada. Could be better . It was kinda hard .. chapati kuruma was good . Best was the breakfast combo and Ghee dosa .. . Amazing and fast service ... parking is a little smalll as compared with other restaurants . Overall a very good experience..

I started this review even before I tasted the food here. Seems strange right? Actually .....no for a change. We ordered idli (rice cakes) and medu vada. Medu comes from a Kannda word meaning soft and vada meaning fritters. The vada is made of black lentils. Spices and curry leaves. The 2 dishes are served with chutney and sambar. These south Indian delicacies are hard to find even in India for a $1 each. The have other dishes like the paratha for q dollar too. I'm not sure how the restaurant is making money and what the background is here other than I seeing the picture of Amma..Honorable late CM of TN...Jayalalitha, who has helped and served the people in state she served. I wouldn't be surprised if her foundation is subsidizing the process here. Don't worry, I did taste the food and they were good. Just make sure you eat it hot or get creative by converting the medu vada to dahi vada if you take it to go. Note that idli was voted the most healthiest breakfast.

    Idly (3 pieces)

A solid Indian spot with very good value for the cost. I tried the idly and they were a great value at $3 for 3 pieces with chutneys and sambar. Flavors were typical and above average. I also had the lunch chicken meal which included 2 chicken dishes with rice, bread, a few sides and a desert, almost like a Thali. Everything tasted very good and a great value.

We had reservations and were immediately seated even though our full party wasn't there--which was appreciated. Richard was our server, and he was extremely pleasant and helpful. It is BYOB, and there is a liquor store right at the next corner, so very convenient. And there was a decent amount of free on street parking. We ordered some apps --entrees (some ordered seafood boil) others plated meals.. dessert as well. Everyone loved the flavored lemonade. Standouts for me where the crab fries--omg, every bit of a fry in this place was so delicious... from the plain, crab, and sweet potato. They were all prepared perfectly with the right amount of seasoning. My husband was very disappointed in his wings... it seems as though the recipe or chef changed since the last time we were here for the wings and the garlic noodles--they were both very underwhelming. My Canadian King salmon was perfectly medium which I appreciated.. not very seasoned, but I really liked the texture. Some of the party didn't really like how spicy their boil was and with not enough sauce--and their boils are pretty pricey, so that was a bit of a bummer. I heard good things about the dessert, specifically the key lime pie. They were very thoughtful in playing Stevie Wonder's Happy Birthday for our birthday girl.. it was definitely the extended version lol.. but it was really cute. Love the music videos playing on the screen in the center of the room. Also a cute touch. Overall, there were some misses, but I believe the hits were spot on, hence my rating.. I would return to try the rest of the menu.

I recently tried the chef's 8-course tasting menu, and it was perfectly paced--the small plates are proportionately sized so you leave feeling satisfied rather than overwhelmed. Every dish is a standout with deep, "stacked" flavors; even the ingredients I was skeptical about ended up being favorites. Nothing needed a drop of extra seasoning. The service sets a warm, welcoming tone from the start. We were offered Oshibori (Japanese warm towelettes) to refresh our hands, and getting a fresh set of utensils with every course was a high-end touch I really appreciated. Menu Highlights: Taro Fritter: A sweet-textured appetizer inspired by Chinese desserts, topped with caviar and soy-pickled beets. It was a beautiful way to awaken the palate. Mackerel Crudo: As someone who isn't usually a fan of raw dishes, I was surprised by how much I loved this. It's light, perfectly acidic, and balanced with plum, ponzu, and apple. Grilled Sunchoke: This was "rustic elegance" in a bowl. The smell alone is incredible, and the combination of ginger crab and shellfish butter is pure comfort. Smoked Duck: Topped with black winter truffle and caramelized onions in a gochujang sauce--absolutely excellent cook and presentation. Braised Beef Cheek: So tender you can skip the knife and just use your fork. Since I forgot to BYOB, I tried their house-made Luck & Love hibiscus drink. It's hands-down the best hibiscus tea I've ever had--I actually tried to buy one to-go, but they only make enough for dine-in guests! It's a fantastic spot to bring friends or loved ones, though I'd recommend arriving early. The parking lot is extremely tight, so you might need to look for space in the lot next door.

Can I just say the variety in both cooked and raw dishes in this omakase experience is the largest I've ever come across. Out of the cooked appetizers I loved the turban snail and the foie gras. Out of the raw appetizers my favorite was the array of sashimi in a light lemon sauce. The scallop and octopus were fresh and buttery. I did not expect the amount of food we received, not to mention at the end of the meal there is also soba noodles! I absolutely loved that one of the dishes was tempura soft shell crab. We were brought downstairs to a large room full of tables and were the only ones in there. We wondered if we'd insulted someone, or if one of us might be 'offensive', (no one was) but as it turns out, it was a 'Godsend'. We're all in our 70's and hearing/speaking can be challenging in a crowded/noisy dining room. We remained the only ones there for almost the entire 2 hours we were there and really enjoyed ourselves without having to yell or ask "WHAT!?" We shared a couple of salads (Greek and Arugula) and calamari, all very good. My wife had the seafood capellini and one sister the seafood fra diavolo, which they both enjoyed. My other sister had a seafood salad and my BIL went for the double cut pork chops, which he too enjoyed. I opted for the Halibut / risotto. Halibut is not an easy fish to make 'moist or juicy'. I make it at home and it comes out 'pretty good' (at least my wife says so) but here, this portion was fantastic! So light an flaky and tasty. Definitely give it a try if you enjoy Halibut. We all shared a couple of desserts... a home made carrot cake and a chocolate cake from 'outside'. Both good, but the carrot cake was served warm, which was a first for all of us... and it was terrific! Without a doubt the best carrot cake we'd ever had, so save a little room for their carrot cake if/when go.
