American Flatbread was founded in Waitsfield, VT in 1985. There are 10 locations in VT, MA, ME, and CT. This one is located in the Shops of Farmington in Canton, CT. The interior was spacious, rustic, and with high ceilings. It's definitely a casual place to get a meal. The huge wood fire oven is the centerpiece of the dining room. Ordering online and picking up was easy. On this visit, my family and I ordered two small pizzas for takeout. One small homemade maple fennel sausage, sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, mushrooms, mozzarella, parmesan, garlic oil and herb mix; this was so good, I especially loved the sun-dried tomatoes, it added a tang to it. The second small pizza, we had half maui pork and half buffalo chicken. One half came with smoked pork shoulder, mango BBQ sauce, red onions, pineapple, goat cheese, mozzarella, parmesan garlic oil, and herb mix. The other half had buffalo sauce, chicken, cheese, and red onions. I'd have to say, my family thoroughly enjoyed the pizzas. I'm a huge fan of thin crust pizzas so this was my thing. I feel so bad giving Flatbread only 3 stars but I find their pizza inconsistent and since that is all they make (pizza and salad), they should have it perfected. We ordered a mushroom, onion and chicken pizza. It didn't seem to have any sauce at all. But when I asked the waitress if we needed to request sauce on their pizza she said no, look you can see a tiny bit of it, the chefs don't always put much on it. The waitress was very accommodating and gave us some sauce on the side. The pizza was good, just dry without sauce. The apple sundae we shared was delicious as well. Sorry Flatbread... I hate leaving a bad review, especially with a restaurant I want to like. This was about my 3rd time visiting, and I've gotten take out a few times before. Usually, we'd get a "medicine wheel" cheese pizza, and it's pretty good. Tonight, there was a wait for 2 people, which was understandable. We were seated in the middle area of the restaurant where it was louder and not as nice as the booths near the entrance. We were served quickly but made the mistake of ordering the "Homemade Sausage" pizza. You'd think with a name like that, sausage would be the main topping...or at least visible. When our waiter brought out the pizza, they asked if we needed anything. I glanced around the table and asked for napkins. They pointed out there were some between the plates, then walked off. There were 3 napkins there. I don't know about you, but my hands get a little dirty eating brick oven pizza. Then there was the pizza itself... I like mushrooms, I don't LOVE mushrooms. I saw that this particular pizza included mushrooms in the toppings, but this was a mushroom pizza. It was COVERED. The mushroom taste overpowered the pizza, and my partner pulled most of his off. We briefly considered ordering something else but didn't want to wait, and the waiter didn't come back anyway. After eating half of my first piece, I looked to see if it contained any actual sausage. It was actually pretty difficult to find, but there were some small chopped up pieces. Occasionally I'd get a bite with some sausage on it, but mostly it was mushroom pizza. For $24, big fail. The waiter never came back to ask how it was. Maybe they already knew. When they did bring the check, I asked for a box to take it home since my teenager loves mushrooms (it was even too much for him). The box they brought us was sort of a joke. Still nearly half a pizza left and the box looked like it was for a salad. I stacked the pizza slices to get them to fit, paid the bill and left. I'm sorry to say we most likely won't be returning. I arrived with my date to a chaotic packed house of raucous shouting louts howling enough to make your ears ring, and was told we'd have to wait till a table opened up. "Shouldn't be more than a minute!" Ten minutes later, after seeing several couples waved by and taken to a table, I walked up to one of the three girls gabbing around the register to point out that more than a minute had passed. Oh, they explained through the shouting, people with reservations come first! Why didn't you tell us that before, so we could have gone elsewhere and avoided the long wait, I asked? "Umm... It'll just be a minute more, sir!" she repeated. The lady I was with still wanted to eat here, so we continued to wait. But after ten minutes more of wall-to-wall noise, I'd had it, and we got up to walk out. "You've leaving, sir? Oh look! A table has just now magically opened up!" I asked my date if she still wanted to eat here, and unfortunately she said yes, so we sat down. She ordered a pizza described as having lots of tomato sauce and no mushrooms. After another long wait it arrived. Very little tomato sauce. Lots of mushrooms. I tried to flag down three passing waitresses, who stared past me as though I was not there, and a waiter, who said he'd be right there in a second and never returned. Again, I was ready to walk out in disgust, but my date said, no, no, don't make a fuss, I'd have preferred more tomato sauce but it's OK. I can pick out the mushrooms. Please, let's not go to all the time and trouble of having to find another place and maybe waiting even more. So we sat down, and had the (tasteless, underdone, and, of course, grotesquely over-priced) pizza. Lousy service. Non-stop noise. High prices. Frat house decor. Lousy food. Did I mention the lousy service? Incredibly lousy service. Just don't go here. A dining experience I literally hated. Never again. read more

We arrived early- so we hit up Barnes and Noble until the restaurant opened & we were the first through the door. We snagged a booth in the sun & started looking at the menu. The server brought us water and also let us know they could do halves on pizzas. His intention was to let us know in case we wanted to split a pizza- instead we both ordered a split pizza each and got to try more than one! Yay!!! I ordered a half Cheese and Herb (Mozzarella, Parmesan, homemade garlic oil and a blend of organic herbs) and half Revolution (wood-fired cauldron tomato sauce, organic caramelized onions, organic mushrooms, mozzarella & parmesan, homemade garlic oil and a blend of organic herbs). Basically I got half cheese bread and half pizza!!! Josh went with the half Revolution and half Homemade Sausage. All the ingredients are farm fresh and they have a big chalkboard that lists all the local places they get all their foods from. It's quite impressive not to mention very tasty. Farm fresh is simply amazing food. I also loved the décor! Eclectic- looked to be plenty of local art! From the hand blown glass globes for lights, to the giant rocks that gave an entry feel into the big dining room, to the different doodles on the cover of each menu. This place feels very safe, in light of Covid. My server was very friendly and welcomed me back! It was like we were old friends. I went for an impromptu lunch and had the Farmington Valley pizza I ordered a small they accidentally brought a large it was so yummy I'm embarrassed to tell you I ate almost all of it. I love that This place sells locally sourced items. The menu was double-sided and I didn't realize that after I placed my order I discovered the other side and probably would have gotten something off the other side. We had our Christmas gift exchange today and the staff decided to order lunch from American Flatbread. I've never tried them before so I was excited to try somewhere new. I ordered the salad with chicken and the small cheese and herbs flatbread. I was surprised with the amount of food that was. We had takeout. Pizza was the worst we have ever eaten. Barely any tomato sauce, cheese or toppings tasteless, poorly executed. We might as well have been eating cardboard. Significant crust, not flatbread. The salad was even worse. Soaking wet lettuce, lots of it was old and decomposed. I picked out about 25% of it. We added tomato, red onion and peppers. They were basically nonexistent. Who is running the show here? This starts with the management and the fact that they are not on site, do not train their staff. I hadn't visited Flatbread in years so I was thrilled to stop in for dinner yesterday. I had a vegan friend visiting for the weekend so I was brainstorming veg-friendly options in the area. Flatbread in Canton was the perfect fit since we were heading to Collinsville to go kayaking after eating. At 6pm we were seated quickly and our order was taken within minutes - a vegan flatbread for my pal (caramelized onions, mushrooms, Kalamata olives, with herbs and homemade garlic oil), and a Jay's Heart for me (sauce, mozz & parmesan with garlic oil & herbs). Both were absolutely outstanding. I'm a bit of a pizza purist so the simple & classic sauce/cheese/herb combo always hits the spot - the ingredients are so high quality and you really can tell. I'm not a huge specialty pizza person but I've had some of their more adventurous flatbreads (the pulled pork with mango bbq sauce comes to mind) and those are excellent as well. Cleanliness: poor... tables upon entry covered in mess and been there for awhile. Kegs cluttering doorway upon entering; odor too. The pizza tasted burnt, like from a dirty/overused oven. Gluten Free Catastrophe... after ordering a GF pizza, waiting 25 minutes, I learned I did not get a gf pizza, but one baked in the usual ovens, and it was questionable if it was even GF. I've ordered the gf in the past, and can say the pizza received was not the same crust, etc. (no pan to designate it was truly GF). The staff did not seem to want to be bothered with a new pizza, nor did I want to wait with their f'up, since I was with others who had their food already (and from other restaurants). (Not the first time either). I woke in agony from the fail to receive an authentically GF pizza and will never return. One and done in this category. Poor quality food--the pizza received was not even a centimeter high crust. It looked like paper, as carboard is actually larger than what I received. SALTY---all the pizzas tasted like they'd been rolled in salt and NONE had sauce, though we'd ordered it. PRICE--they tag on $6 for a GF pizza like it's 2010 and RARE--this makes a very tiny pizza, with nothing on it (no sauce, just cheese) begin @$19!!! SMALL... like can fit on a paper plate small!! In the supermarket, for organic GF pizzas, you spend around $12 and can save some for the next day. Staff unnattentive. Looked like it killed them to be there and you were bothering them. If your front of house can't smile, hire new people. The menu has reduced to only a few choices, and typed by a five-year-old, like no money put into the most valuable tool of a restaurant--if you go with others, and DON'T want pizza, you're out of luck. No salads...or other food options; there are house-like salads on menu, but there is little to suggest it's more than a few turds of lettuce and overpriced. On whole, the place looked tired and worn, like they haven't put a lick of cleaning, paint, or upgrade in the time its been open. It certainly is below Canton aesthetics for quality, friendliness, and appearance, let alone food authenticity. HIGH PRICED PIZZA. Anyone with an allergy--avoid. Try Marketplace, as they are friendly and ensure your allergy needs are taken serious. This review is consistent with previous visits, numbering over six. read more

The cheese pizza was really great. and the sauce was sweet and perfect We also had a salad with chicken the salad was delicious. The cheese was Pretty good and for dessert we ordered apple cider donuts with vanilla ice cream possibly one of the best desserts I've ever eaten. the donuts, whipcream, ice cream mixed with the donuts. The servers were nice. Some of the nicest servers I've ever met. The ambience was probably the second best ambience I've seen at the restaurant. The lights looks incredible. There was there was lots of details. The kitchen was also right in front of you so you could watch them make your pizza. Flatbread company is always a welcome treat! The house salad is so simple but my all-time-favorite salad, and the "canton community" flatbread is a favorite. Ingredients are fresh and, where possible, local! Also love that you can get some inventive pizzas as well as old-favorites for the family. On top of that, the Flatbread Company are wonderful members of the community in Canton and the Farmington Valley- prioritizing fundraisers for local charities and giving back.
