I stopped by here this past Saturday night for dinner with my wife. We arrived to the restaurant at around 6 PM and were told by the hostess that it would be a 30 minute wait. After we agreed that it wasn't a problem we were given a buzzer so that we could roam around until our table was ready. What was unique about this buzzer is that it was was shaped and colored like a piece of pepperoni pizza instead of the normal coaster. Right at the 30 minute mark our buzzer went off and we were led into the restaurant to a 2 top along the back wall with a great view of the wood fired pizza oven. The inside of American Flatbread is what you would expect of a trendier restaurant with exposed ductwork, a brick wall, industrial lighting and chalkboard menus with the daily specials. For dinner on this evening my wife and I decided to start off our meal by splitting the salad of the day and then a large sausage pizza. Our salad came out first and consisted of pistachio, strawberry, goat cheese, pickled onion and a honey rosemary vinaigrette all on a bed of greens. My wife and I both loved it as the goat cheese was creamy and a little sour which paired perfectly with the super sweet strawberries. The pistachios added a little bit of saltiness and crunch to the mix while the pickled onions added acidity. Overall it was the perfect harmony of flavors and with a protein on it I could have easily been happy with it as my entree. After we had finished eating it our pizza came out. It consisted of house made nitrate free maple fennel sausage made with local fresh pork baked with sun-dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, mushrooms with cheese and herbs. Since the pizza was made in a wood fired brick oven it was of the thin crust variety and had a very specific taste that I love. Beyond that everything on top of the pizza was really good as well. The sausage came on the pizza crumbled up and had a slight sweetness to it while the mushrooms gave it some earthiness. It was good enough that by the time my wife and I were finished with it there wasn't anything left. The bottom line for is that I would head back here again in the future. Both my salad and the pizza were very good and while I didn't have any beer on this visit I would love to come back and try some. read more

I had very high expectations coming into this place given the heavy praise it receives from the locals. I'm not sure why I fell into this hype considering I've had some of the best pizza in the country in New York City. I guess I was hoping a small town like Burlington could add its own zazz and make something of their own in this genre. Sadly was I disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the pizza is good. It's just not great. The crust is thin which I like but it was just sort of monotonously chew. It didn't have that combination of crisp crunch and chewy texture that you expect. And the toppings were also just "good." I was expecting great things out of the Vermont sausage, but again... it was just sausage. Get my vibe here? Nice for a date for two or a dinner amongst friends. Desserts were pretty good as well a tad bit on the small side but good. I definitely appreciated the half and full pint availability, because it allowed me to try lots of different types of beer. They were also nice about letting me taste one of their beers at no charge, but they certainly didn't encourage that. Anyway, the restaurant was definitely getting full, so the bar area was packed with people waiting for a seat at the restaurant. We were able to carve out an area to have just beer. This place is just amazing. Second time here. There's always a long wait but if you're lucky you can slide into the bar, which we did. Great bar staff, selection of local beers from Zero Gravity, great wine too. Awesome soup special or spicy sweet potato soup which hit the spot after mountain biking all day. Pizzas are delicious, full of flavor, and delicious. They have GF for $4, which I normally would get but I was just going for it this evening haha. They also allow you to split pizzas into two types so if you're torn between what kind you want, you can get two! So we got sausage split with pepperoni, and a truffle veggie special split with I forget the name but it was a basic tomato and cheese pizza. We loved every single one but the sausage one and truffle veggies were the best. Really the only downside is ALL they have is pizza. I didn't realize this my second time and had wanted to break it up with a couple of appetizers or something. But their pizza is absolutely amazing so it was fine. Atmosphere is fun, lively and comfy. We called ahead for takeaway as we were tired after a long day of driving. American Flatbread was recommended by a friend that grew up here, and we were right to take his recommendation! The restaurant was a short and pleasant walk from our Air BnB and when we arrived, we were greeted by the very friendly staff. Unfortunately, there was a small snafu with our order, so we headed to the bar. Great selection of fantastic beers proffered by a moderately friendly bartender. The pizzas were ready just as we were finishing up our drinks, and we speeded home to dig in. DELICIOUS! We loved the thin-style crust and the sauce was fantastically robust. I would advise ordering more than you think you need... we had 2 large pizzas for 5 people as we weren't all that hungry and our appetites probably could have handled one more. Well now, I'm not sure I can gather the words to describe the flatbread I ate from American Flatbread, especially since I am a downstate NY pizza snob. Maybe Holy Moly or My Goodness or YUMMMM will do the trick, but not as accurately as I'd hope. The wait which we were told was 40 minutes, went much quicker. We ordered the Roasted Tomato Salsa and the Punctuated Equilibrium. The roasted tomato salsa came with black beans, corn, salsa, jalapenos and onions - it was one of the best flatbread I've had in my life, if not THE BEST. The punctuated equilibrium came with kalamata olives, goat cheese, and roasted red peppers and came in a hot second. HIGHLY recommend!! read more

We needed a place for dinner that was close to our hotel in Burlington and since this place received such amazing reviews we decided to give it a go. It was just what we wanted: casual atmosphere with delicious flatbreads and drinks. We arrived on a Sunday night around 7:30pm and thought there might be a wait, and it was quite crowded; however we were able to snag a table for two right away. I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc and we chose to share a small flatbread with house made Vermont maple sausage, goat cheese and mushroom. It arrived after not too long a wait and was hot and fresh. The crust was soft and tender. They were very generous with the toppings too. After we devoured this, we decided on sharing the carrot cake for dessert. It arrived and we dug in. It was also super yummy, topped with candied pecans. My only complaint would be that after we received our dessert, a completely different server asked us how everything was. Ok I figured she was just being helpful. After that, we never saw our original server again, and had trouble finding the new one too. We wanted to pay our bill and couldn't find anyone to help us. Our original server could have at least said something, telling us someone else was taking over. We finally tracked down our new server and were able to pay. Weird but not a deal breaker. Definitely a solid place for delicious food and drinks in a fun, family atmosphere. read more

Attended this joint on visit to a friend. So good. I loved having an entire pizza to eat. Cold inside in June. The beer was like a coffee milkshake. Absolutely perfect combination. Nice warm lighting and wooden furniture too. This place must get busy because there was so much space inside and out. My husband and I had lunch here during our stay in Burlington. They run a great lunch special which was 10 dollars for a mini flatbread of your choice and also included either the soup of the day or salad. I got the salad my husband got the soup both were great. For pizza I got the "power to the people" flatbread which was like buffalo chicken...it was very good but I'd take the carrots off next time. My husband got the "medicine wheel" flatbread and added the sausage. His was really good as well! Service was great and they had Zero Gravity Beer right there which was pretty awesome. read more

The wait staff was attentive without being intrusive! Excellent! I had not been to this restaurant since the pandemic and the quality of the food and menu specials were not the same high quality as they here before March 2020. This is a shame! Our pizza was a disappointment: skimpy toppings. The salad was delicious but again, skimpy toppings. I understand we are all struggling but sub par food will make me go elsewhere. My husband and I visited Burlington, VT for the first time and so far so good until we went to this place to eat. I ask for a table for two and asks "indoor or outdoor?" I said indoor; the hostess takes her sweet time looking in her iPad and then she says "there is only one table available by the oven so it will be warm over there". Mind you, there are two tables available right next to where she is standing. So I said outdoor not to make a big deal about her no offering one of those tables. She brings us outside and brings us two glass of water in a rude way. I don't know if us being Hispanic had anything to do with her attitude and her poor service skills. We waited a couple of minutes up til finally a waitress comes to our table and we placed our order. Our food did not come out until 45 minutes after and the pizza was not hot it was lukewarm like if it was sitting for a while and I was not a fan of the pizza at all! The taste of the pizza I can get over it but the poor service, not... My husband and I notice racism when immediately we see it and in this case it was that.. Tricked by the 4.5 star Yelp average, my husband and I accepted a suggested 45-minute wait time tonight, thinking that the food would have to be worth the wait. It's not. We arrived shortly after 8 p.m. this evening (a Saturday night), and were given a device shaped like a pizza slice that would light up and vibrate when our table was ready. We waited for over an hour in the front section, all the while staring at a large empty table for 9 right before our eyes, and a foyer half full of people waiting for tables. After approximately one hour, we inquired as to what the story was on our table. According to the unapologetic and apathetic hostess, we were supposed to be seated "a while ago", but our device never went off. Really? Couldn't have walked a few feet to inquire for the name you'd written down? Couldn't have called out the number on the device itself? We were FINALLY seated at a table and ordered a large pizza to share. Even though it's listed on the menu, apple cider isn't available until Fall. It must be that people like this place because it's cheap for the amount of food you get. The pizza was fine, but it's never a good thing when your fingers are covered with ash from the bottom. Our server was fine - no complaints there. I went to the bathroom however, and I unexpectedly found the women's door locked. I went to ask the nearby bartender if it was single stall or just a door that needed to be pushed hard. It irks me that I had to wait just a little *too* long for the bartender and a server off-shift to finish their conversation before turning to face me. I think the experience would have been better had my patience not been completely exhausted in the first place. I don't believe in writing bad reviews without identifying what would have left me a satisfied customer, so here are my suggestions: The two large tables at the front of the restaurant have GOT to be divided into smaller tables to combine or pull apart as needed. For us to be staring at such a large empty table for so long not only made us more frustrated as time went on, but you, American Flatbread, are losing what has to be at least $100 for every hour that this table is left empty. There need to be more than three single stall washrooms for that amount of traffic. It's not a house party, it's a restaurant. Don't list items on the menu that aren't always available. It's frustrating for both the customers to hear that they can't have what they want, and for the servers to keep explaining its unavailability. Offer apologies for making people wait unnecessarily. Offer a free wi-fi code to people who have to wait more than 30 minutes. Being relatively close to the Quebec border, you are bound to have tourists on a constant basis. You can offer smaller portions at higher prices and pay staff better so they'll be more inclined to provide better service. With the current balance, I am certain that the service is definitely linked to the price of the food. It's unfortunate that the applicable saying here is, "You get what you pay for." read more

For gourmet pizza, this is about as good as it gets anywhere. For gourmet beer selection, it's about as good as it gets around Burlington. (but see my review of The Alchemist in Waterbury) I'm not much of a drinker, but sometimes I get these really intense cravings for a way-out bitter, complex IPA, which is why we came here a few weeks ago. (I couldn't bear the thought of having to drive all the way down to Waterbury and then wait an hour for a table.) The excellent pizza here was kind of a bonus. The dessert made it just about perfect. We started off with the Berkshire IPA, which my husband really liked, but I thought it lacked the long finish I like in my IPAs. Then we tried the TLA IPA, one of their their house beers, and it was just what I was craving. They also have a lot of high-end beers (Ommegang, Dieu Du Ciel, etc.) and then some even higher-end beers (vintage Allogash, Smuttynoses, and Unibroue) for those of you who do not mind shelling out as much for a bottle of beer as you might for a pinot noir. (If I knew I could, as with wines, taste a sip and send it back if dissatisfied, I wouldn't mind so much.) The Evolution green salad is steal for $5.75. Don't be put off by the seaweed -- there's just a little bit ,and it is very mild (and very very good for you and your thyroid). The salad has a hint of Asian flavors, like ginger and sesame seeds, but this didn't seem out of place in a restaurant that has the word "American" in its name. Be sure to get the "hand-made" VT goat cheese on it ($1.50 extra) -- totally made my day. (Very nice tang to go with the floral bitterness of the IPAs) We then had a smaller-sized pizza split -- half New Vermont Sausage and half Punctuated Equilibrium. (both are about $10.25 for the small, $18 for the large). Now mind you, I am a huge fan of sausage. I'd eat it every morning if I could. But I felt that the nitrate-free, local-pork, housemade, fennel-maple sausage was... nice. That's all. But the pizza was not too greasy, not too heavy, I'll give it that. I just feel it could have been more flavorful. Maybe (and I almost *never* say this) it could have used just a wee bit more salt. And I had to really hunt for the maple flavor in the sausage. But someone spent a lot of time and effort on those caramelized onions: they were perfect in themselves, but kind of overwhelmed the pizza since there was no assertive sausage to balance it out. Maybe it was just that the sausage pizza, no mater how good, was always going to pale in comparison to the bright, Mediterranean flavors of the Punctuated Equilibrium. Now, I am not sure what that particular take on evolutionary theory has to do with this perfect meld of olives, onions, roasted red peppers, goat cheese, and rosemary...perhaps they felt their inspiration in coming up with genius pizza flavors was at a relative standstill until -- VOILA! -- the Punctuated Equilibrium! Well, then, I guess the name is well deserved. It's a huge step forward for pizza-eating species across the universe. Not that the ingredients or the combinations are so novel...but how it is executed is something to be noted. Amazing. We finished with a brownie sundae, which was lovely. The brownies were somehow perfectly dense, chewy with just the right amount of crispiness on top...but without being *quite* rich enough. (But I know I am being super harsh, here. It was really quite good for restaurant fare--just not THE best ever. Nevertheless, I would order it again.) But what really made me happy was the chocolate fudge! Not at all gritty, both sweet and bitter, and not too thin...if only there had been more of it! However, when we ordered the sundae, I did ask our server to be generous with the ice-cream...and I swear she dumped a whole pint on it! We almost didn't finish the ice cream. And for those of you who know us, that is truly saying something. Quality ingredients from local sources; reasonable prices; lovely, hard-to-find beers; inventive flavor combinations; and well-executed, gourmet pizzas. Now there is a restaurant that deserves to have the word "American" on it. read more

Wow where to begin. I love Burlington and this was my first time at American Flatbread. Really neat little spot with out of this world food. Got the buffalo chicken pizza and it was SOOOOOO good. I absolutely liked the restaurant from the minute I walked in. There was a notice to not use cellphones once inside the restaurant, a sign you would usually see in hospitals. But I agree that we should look up from our screens and spend more time enjoying real life moments. Due to the lineup, on a friday night, we waited 20min until our buzzer, in the form of a slice of pizza, finally vibrated. The environment was very laid back and the pizza stone radiated as much heat as good vibes (of fresh pizza). When looking at the menu, I noticed that most dairy products and meats are free-range, organic, and local, which makes me believe they actually care about health, environment, etc -- stuff I don't care about, but I appreciate their effort in tackling the big problems. We ordered a buffalo chicken/blue cheese flatbread, and a VT sausage flatbread: possibly the best pizza or flatbread we had in our lives. Crispy thin crust, well balanced flavors, and not as heavy as the average pizza. On the side, we had garlic olive oil, tomato sauce, and habanero hot sauce. Man, each excellently complemented the flatbreads in a different way. The house root beer tasted very good, unlike most root beer (which taste like medicinal syrup). The waiters were warm and friendly. I'm not sure if it's because I left my phone in a pocket, but something in this restaurant made this experience magical. I'm the rare bird on this one. Im sure they have their following. We happen to hit them on an intensely crowded, all surfaces of real estate covered, ultra noisy like can't hear the person across from you talking or even hear "the back ground music" kinda loud, type of night. Not my thing. College students, families, large groups leaning, sitting, waiting in line. Argh. We had some great beer though. The cool wood fired open pizza oven & fireplace were beacons of warmth & soft light. But neither of those elements made up for the crows & noise. I see all of the great reviews of this place and I have to admit I only went one time. They have all of the ingredients and oven equipment to create a very special pizza, the sad part is that I have allot better. We had a New Vermont Sausage and a Pepperoni and Peppers. I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't that good. To top off the metz a metz experience was that our waitress was very inattentive. We only ordered 2 pizzas and 4 beers and it was like pulling teeth. They do have a very good beer selection but out draft beers were not good. It tasted like the tap lines weren't cleaned. I have several reviews 3 stars and up so I not just trashing this place to be a jerk, because maybe I just caught it on a bad day, but for over 60 dollars with a tip for 2 individual pizzas and 4 beers for lunch, the place should be spot on and it was far from it. Very good to excellent Vermont rustic flatbread! The first time I went here I didn't expect much. I was happily surprised. The flatbreads are consistently amazing. Not like regular pizza at all. You need to try it to understand. The salads are also very good. A large wood burning pizza oven occupies the center of the space. I especially prefer the original location in Waitsfield. Very charming. The beer served here is also very good and many people come just to sit at the bar. Lines and waits are long. There is a reason for this. The prices are pretty low and the food quality is high. Highly recommended. read more
