I visited Switchback Brewing in Burlington Vermont. They were founded in 2002 by Bill Cherry, who wanted to create beers that were unexpected, great-tasting, and relatable. Switchback's beers are carbonated during fermentation by the yeast itself, and the brewery uses specially designed fermenters to capture the last 24 hours of CO2 produced. After aging, the beers are moved to kegs or bottles without being filtered, which Switchback says results in a fresher, fuller, and more natural flavor. I actually had a beer from their offshoot / side project brand, Askew, and a mainstay from the brewery. Rime & Reason: A Cold IPA with the crispness of a lager but the nice freshness of a Hazy IPA that was hopped with Alora hops. Nice notes of bright fruits like apricot and peach. Extra Pale Ale (XPA): A Pale Ale that leans into the hops due to the usage of lots of whole cone hops of Centennial, Chinook, and Cascade. Nice and bitter, good crispness, and the hops are well expressive of the traditional American hops you expect. In our first year in Burlington, we first found Burligton Beer Company to be a great place to hang out for a good beer and a smash burger. We just now, a year later, wandered over to their neighbor, Switchback Brewing. We were not disappointed in the ambiance or service. The food was just ok but I only had the smoked wings and the coleslaw. The beer is fantastic and I will certainly be keeping an eye on their menu. The Keller Bier offering was delicious! The wings had a really nice smoke on them, not too much, but the dry rub was a bit heavy handed. I will try something else from the smoker next time. I would also encourage them to use the big, Amish chicken wings rather than the smaller ones they are sourcing. The coleslaw was disappointing. Maybe my Wisconsin roots are showing, but "creamy" coleslaw is a must and this one simply missed the chance to shine. The ingredients were great but the dressing was a swing and a miss. The counter folks were nice but the chef was horrible. I don't do beef burgers so I ordered a simple plain chicken burger. The chef refused to add bacon and real cheddar cheese on it. The liquid cheese was horrible too. I even offered to pay extra but no way. I asked for the bacon on the side and again the chef said NO! Switchback Brewing was our first stop on a Sunday brewery hop. Excellent beer, definitely try some of their smoked malt options. Quality: During our visit to Burlington we visited five breweries and I believe Switchback had the most consistent and delicious beers. The unique smoked malt beers we tried in a Flight, Super Smoke, Smoked Oyster Stout, and Humo were all excellent. I also enjoyed the Zaboo Hazy IPA a lot, they are correct in its description as well-balanced. The only beer I'd skip is E-Z Ale, but I recognize it is a good light choice for a warm day. Quantity: Generous pours for all the beers I ordered. Value: $7 for Flights. $5-$8 for Draft Beers. Ambiance: Switchback Brewing is located a little south of downtown Burlington. In an industrial complex you will find two breweries, this one the smaller of the two. They have some picnic tables as well as a tent in the front. Inside they have some high-top tables. Awesome local brewery! I seldom write five star reviews but out of all the breweries in Burly( and there are many) Switchback is the best IMO. Great location down on the South End, with all the art, food and craft companies around. It's down nearby lake and was busy on the cold January Saturday I visited. The brewery was new and clean inside. There was a large souvenir section with glassware, shirts, and bike gear. Great selection and you could tell people like to wear Switchback Brewing gear. Inside, it's pretty basic, and I don't even remember seeing any tanks. I was wanted more cultural items, maybe some hiking gear and Vermont related stuff. I had the classic Switchback Ale in a custom pint glass. Great taste and color. Unfiltered too which is cool! The bar was crowded but they were friendly and worked hard. We came here right after Queen City and sampled one of their flights. The red ale is always something I go for and theirs was pretty awesome. It was a little loud because the place was so packed but we still had a great time. The prices seemed really reasonable and competitive with the other surrounding breweries. I noticed that they did sell a lot of hot dogs. I'll have to go back and see what's that all about. Overall, I really enjoyed my time here. Switchback brewery has a really nice taproom set off the bike path in South Burlington. There flagship Ale is a good quality sipping beer. The Connector IPA was probably my favorite, it is smooth with a slight citrus taste to it, very drinkable. Their "Flynn on Fire" lines are smoky, we tried the Smoked 40 and it was tasty, had hints of roasted pineapple. The barrel aged Blackstrap Ale combined a malty vanilla flavor with the essence of the whiskey barrel it was aged in. Pricey but worth it. The new Karsten Helles is a great light summer beer that is perfect to drink while playing cornhole on the patio outside. Favorite brewery/tap room in Burlington with awesome local Vermont beer. When asking locals where they go to drink beer or which breweries we should visit, the name Switchback came up several times. My husband and I came here during a brewery crawl we were doing one of our days while vacationing in Vermont. The brewery/tap room is off Pine Street, which is where a bunch other tap rooms and breweries are in Burlington. It's a neat warehouse-type space and the "tour" of the brewery is self guided. It wasn't so much a tour but informative facts about how it got started and what they do now. The most unique thing about their beer is that it's all unfiltered so it's not bitter at all which is appealing to me, since I'm not a huge beer drinker. We got a flight of four beers to try and the bartender recommended ones we should try. The signature ale and the brown ale were our absolute favorites. Both were drinkable and things I could see myself drinking all afternoon when it's a nice summer day. The other two we tried was a Belgium-style beer so a bit on the sour side (my husband prefers this kind of beer so he loved it) and a citrus pale which was refreshing and tasted great. Overall, this place was spot on and our most memorable brewery visited in Burlington. They also had a cute "mascot" - a border collie named Dyson who roams the tap room. The staff was friendly, beer delicious and space very cool. Definitely stop into this one! read more

Switchback was a little far from where we stayed in Burlington but we got an Uber and it was so worth it! Pro tip, it's also right by the World's Tallest Filing Cabinet, so you can snap a photo before grabbing some beer at this fun brewery. Switchback is employee-owned and operated and that really comes through in their service. I saw photos of their flight paddles (they're Vermont-shaped) and I knew I wanted to check this place out. We tried a bunch of beer, including a few smoked varieties which were really unique. We had the Switchback Ale, Connector IPA, Märzen, Smoked Märzen, Thai Lime Gose, and the Blackstrap Ale. All were very good and incredibly balanced. My favorite was the Connector IPA - not super hoppy and really good. The Blackstrap Ale was another favorite - smoky and dark. They also have a Smoked Oyster Stout made with oysters! We didn't try it but it's just one example of the unique things they're doing at Switchback. The employees helping out behind the bar were great and really friendly. They don't have a full menu but they offer complimentary pretzels and you can order a hot dog or beer brat steamed in Switchback Ale (and add chili if you want). We got a hot dog and it was SO good! They're all natural and perfectly steamed. It was just the right amount of snack to accompany a couple flights of beer. They do tours of the facility on Saturdays which I think would be a lot of fun. There's a nice outdoor area but note that if you're sitting outside and order a flight, it won't come on the cool Vermont paddle. There is a large area of merchandise and we ended up buying a bunch of Vermont flannel koozies as gifts, which was perfect! Definitely don't miss this brewery if you're in the area. Fun and spacious brewery with plenty of adorable pups around to pet. The beer is delicious. The workers weren't overly friendly and didn't have any information to share with our brew tour. Our tour guide asked one of the brewers a question and he seemed annoyed. I suppose I can see where it'd be annoying to have a group of people standing around drinking beer but hey, ya'll signed up for it! Plenty of merchandise and beer for sale. Oh and don't be afraid of the unfiltered beer. Those little floaters are good for ya! Damn good beer. Had to bring some home for my brother who appreciates a good brew. read more

The best part about coming here was the tour with one of the brewers. I was really impressed with both the brewery itself and the delivery of the tour. Switchback has been around for 15 years and contributed to the growth of the craft brewery industry in Vermont and beyond. I really enjoyed seeing the evolution of the brewery throughout the years, as evident by the equipment and space that was added. The brewer was humorous and seems to enjoy his job. He was actually able to explain everything so that the crowd could understand it and didn't just talk over us. I loved how each of the pieces of equipment were named after Wagner opera characters! The best part was the cool equipment that they brought in from a defunct brewery in Germany. But when I sat down to enjoy the beers afterwards, I did enjoy them. Most of the beers are blonde ones or sours, too. They have a nice bar area, as well as outside seating for the three months of the year when it's warm in Vermont. lol Maybe it was busy when I went, but the service could have been slightly more attentive. What I didn't realize is that they are located just a few hundred yards from Lake Champlain. If the weather is nice, I would recommend walking down and checking it out. read more

I'd rate the culmination of both flights a 4/5. Service was great, I forgot my credit card there and went the entire rest of the day without it which was wild.
