Such a cute firehouse turned cafe and bakery. The sandwiches were yummy but the brioche could have been a little softer/moist. Taste the east sando was nice but I wish the yolk was runner and the sauce a tad less sweet. The highlight of the sandwich was the arugula, very flavorful and not bitter. The best item on the menu was the Maple biscuit. It is a revelation. The crispy, buttery biscuit with maple butter and jam on top was so satisfying. The jam was so delicious. Even after we finished the biscuit, I packed the butter and the jam to go because I couldn't bear to waste any of it. Last but not least, the coffee tastes quite delicious black, and you can tell a lot about an establishment by their high-quality coffee. A great place to wake up to in the morning. read more

This place is booked and busy, and for a good reason! I got the Eat the East breakfast sandwich - AMAZING. The brioche buns here are to die for and the maple curry aioli + cumin onion chutney was absolutely delicious. I ate this breakfast sandwich this morning and my mouth is watering just typing this out. It's definitely a busy spot, but there are tables inside and out. I mean, really, sigh, tipping (20-30% on my $7 loaf of bread to ring is just too much and makes me angry). The highlight of my entire vacation was getting breakfast here. Come right when they open, you cant go through with any of there breakfast options. We tried out August First when visiting the Vermont area at the recommendation of a local. We came during a busy lunch rush, and although the cafe was crowded, the line moved quickly and we received our food fast as well. We tried the eat the east breakfast sandwich ($11) and the vermonter sandwich ($16). I especially liked the vermonter sandwich and the bread it came on. The cafe also sells various bread items and baked goods. One thing to note is that since the cafe is counter-serve, seating is also first come first serve. We were able to snag a seat right as someone left, but for that reason I would recommend coming at a less peak time if able. Wow! I absolutely loved it here. The space is small warehouse vibes, very Burlington. It's a no laptop/work zone which I thought was cool so it felt like a true gathering place. We just got a couple croissants and a Kouign Amann, but their whole menu of sandwiches and such looked amazing. They have peak croissant game though! Super flaky, crispy, perfect lamination. Visiting for the week from Berkeley, CA and I came to this fantastic spot every morning. The folks behind the counter were nice though one was clearly new and was a bit confused about how yo best put in what I wanted. The flavor of the mocha was slightly different the second morning but it was still very good. The maple biscuit is the best biscuit I've ever had. If you want the biscuit hot, you want to order the griddled biscuit. It comes with butter and jam so no need to order more butter unless you want to try the maple butter, which is an additional al cost. Figured all this out after a few days. This place is very busy for good reason! All the food looked so tasty. The inside was full when I went, but they have a lot of seating considering the size of the cafe. They also have outdoor seating! Because of how busy it is, this place has more of a bustling atmosphere rather than a cozy cafe. The latte was soooo good. Of course I had to get it with maple syrup while I was in Vermont. It did not disappoint!! I got an extra shot of espresso (both sizes come with 2 by default), and the coffee to milk ratio was perfect. The breakfast sandwich I was less impressed by. Stopped in before a boat ride on Lake Champlain, hoping to grab and go with an iced coffee and scone--simple enough order, but the long line made it seem like I was ordering a 4 course meal. Agree with the comments re: social distancing. The cranberry almond scone was very fresh and flavorful, probably one of the best "baked goods" I've had, but the iced coffee was literally to "die of" as opposed to "to die for"--very metallic tasting, did not taste freshly artisanal brew, as they claim, and while the staff were not rude, they were rushed and not very customer centric. Maybe hire more staff and have two lines--one for people who are ordering a full and/or complicated breakfast for a party of 2 or more and one for people who are just ordering a coffee and pastry to go. My wife and I stopped in August First on August Ninth (2025). It was a beautiful day and the garage doors were open. We got there a little before 9:00 and the place was already bustling, but luckily we just beat the rush. Shortly after we arrived the line grew out the door! FYI: even if there is a line when you get there - it moves quickly and is worth the wait. We ordered : The Day Maker, Maple Granola, and Griddled Biscuit. We ordered the Day Maker Breakfast Sandwich, which had egg, cheddar cheese, arugula, red onion and topped with smoked bacon fat aioli and tomato habanero jam on a brioche bun, the Eat the East breakfast sandwich, which has egg, cheddar cheese, cumin onion chutney and maple curry aioli on a brioche bun and a Griddled Maple Biscuit, which was served with maple butter and strawberry jam. Since the place was really busy, we ordered it to go, but thankfully found seating right before our order was ready. Both sandwiches were delicious and had such great flavors. Herbed tofu, a delicious slaw, siracha aioli, and so much more--including plenty of heat. (One of the best sandwiches I've ever had).
