Extra hot mocha
Kelly S.

Visiting for the week from Berkeley, CA and I came to this fantastic spot every morning. The folks behind the counter were nice though one was clearly new and was a bit confused about how yo best put in what I wanted. The flavor of the mocha was slightly different the second morning but it was still very good. The maple biscuit is the best biscuit I've ever had. If you want the biscuit hot, you want to order the griddled biscuit. It comes with butter and jam so no need to order more butter unless you want to try the maple butter, which is an additional al cost. Figured all this out after a few days. Love the open space and the vibe of the shop. Definitely my favorite in town of the three coffee spots I tried.

Blueberry muffin, maple biscuit (hefty)

Stopped by on a Wednesday just before the lunch rush. We had walked by on the weekend, and saw the lines snaked maybe 10-15+ deep. After sitting down, the lunch rush came in, about 5+ ppl deep. Ordered a maple biscuit + blueberry muffin + Americano. Thick, flaky, and rich biscuit, tasty blueberry muffin. Variety of sandwiches that looked good after peering at a neighbor's table. Great spot to share a pastry, relax, read, or do laptopless work. More outdoor seating, weather permitting. If you're not willing to wait in line, they have free, fantastic smells when their corner door is open.

Stopped here for our second coffee fix of the day and boy it was soooo busy. The line was a bit long unfortunately but their iced latte was pretty good. They had food as well. Lots of indoor seating. Popular spot.

This place is very busy for good reason! All the food looked so tasty. The inside was full when I went, but they have a lot of seating considering the size of the cafe. They also have outdoor seating! Because of how busy it is, this place has more of a bustling atmosphere rather than a cozy cafe. The latte was soooo good. Of course I had to get it with maple syrup while I was in Vermont. It did not disappoint!! I got an extra shot of espresso (both sizes come with 2 by default), and the coffee to milk ratio was perfect. The breakfast sandwich I was less impressed by. It was still really good (especially the bread), but the whole thing ended up being a little too greasy for me. Great experience, the service workers were kind and helpful even with how busy it was. Overall rating: 4.7/5 stars

I got a breakfast sandwich and my husband got a lunch sandwich and they were both delicious. The line was well out the door when we visited around 11 on a Sunday, but they moved really quickly so it seemed like they are used to crowds. I also got a latte and added maple syrup as the flavor and it was delicious. There is indoor and outdoor seating. It was a very eclectic crowd.

This must be the spot for Saturday morning coffee and baked goods! The place was bustling and rightfully so. Mouths were watering over the biscuits, doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, and so much more. We chose a Mocha, Honey Bee Latte, and an apple cake for the perfect fall day. The cake was moist and super flavorful and the drinks were good. Overall, a super cute place to stop in for a chat with friends and enjoy delicious baked goods- no work allowed (or laptops).

August First is basically our Vermont tradition at this point. The Vermonter sandwich? unreal. every. single. time. My wife and I literally make this our first stop whenever we're in town. Pastries hit of course, coffee's great too maybe like a 4.5 for the PSL if I'm being picky as a coffee snob but that sandwich is an absolute banger it's got us in a chokehold. Cozy vibes, good food, happy hearts, okay tummy.

I visited August First on a Sunday morning and the line was really long! I think we waited close to 30 minutes in line before we ordered. We ordered the Day Maker Breakfast Sandwich, which had egg, cheddar cheese, arugula, red onion and topped with smoked bacon fat aioli and tomato habanero jam on a brioche bun, the Eat the East breakfast sandwich, which has egg, cheddar cheese, cumin onion chutney and maple curry aioli on a brioche bun and a Griddled Maple Biscuit, which was served with maple butter and strawberry jam. Since the place was really busy, we ordered it to go, but thankfully found seating right before our order was ready. Both sandwiches were delicious and had such great flavors. The biscuit was also so good and a definite must try. Overall, go here if you're looking for a delicious breakfast sandwich. You won't be disappointed!

Mushroom toast (look at the size of it!). Stellar flavor.

August First exceeded all expectations. I persuaded my family to go for lunch, feeling like we had to try some funky, amazing food during our stop in Burlington. The menu had creative dishes and something for everyone. I got the Tofu Dynasty, which I took no pics of because I was too busy inhaling this enormous sandwich packed with incredible flavor. Herbed tofu, a delicious slaw, siracha aioli, and so much more--including plenty of heat. (One of the best sandwiches I've ever had). I got the griddled biscuit to share with the table and it was absolutely devoured. Other dishes we really enjoyed were the rice bowl and the mushroom toast. The portions are huge, the prices for beverages are so reasonable, the baked goods are excellent, and the vibe is fantastic. Highly recommend!

Kouign Amman

First time there. Line was out the door, but we expected that for leaf peepin season. The place has a cool, rustic vibe. While we would've loved to try some of the more hearty meals, but opted for pastries due to time constraints. Next time we will definitely go for the eggs and avocado toast that looked so good! We got the kouign Amman fall spice edition and it was so good!! Perfect seasoning! We also tried the maple biscuit. The pastries were just amazing!

Polenta and eggs with pork belly
Serena J.

After a whirlwind of a week, I found myself alone in Burlington, Vermont for a day. Lugged my suitcase over to August First for some peace and some breakfast. Ordered polenta and eggs, which came with some large slabs of pork belly. Very comforting. Also ordered a maple latte because it seemed Vermont-y. Yum. Seems like a nice place to hang out. No laptops allowed, so I mostly people watched. Wide range of ages - lots of grandpas, but also lots of younger people in grandpa-chic. At one point, I saw a pretty sick spider land on someone. I think I freaked the person out by pointing it out. I hope the spider made it out ok.

Cute little cafe, decent pastries, very hipster vibe. Servers were friendly…read more My bar for coffee shops is getting higher as I visit and review more. Perfectly pleased with this place, but the competition is fierce and some folks are setting the bar very high. The top thing I will say about this place is the staff were friendly and very friendly about our child, which matters a lot, arguably it's the top decider of where I go these days. The coffee and pastries were good, but nothing special. We got the last breakfast sandwich, be warned inventory is limited, and it was hot on the outside and cold in the middle.

If you ever daydream about wandering the streets of Brooklyn and stumbling into a hole in the wall…read morebakery, Barrio is the place for you. The high molded ceilings and the minimalistic decor begs to be named hipster's paradise. I ordered a cinnamon bun. While the shape was odd and I was wary of the amount of icing, I could tell that the outside was crispy and crystallized even from behind the display case. The inside was cakey and soft in a delightful juxtaposition to the exterior. The icing was thick and creamy with notes of vanilla bean coming through in each bite lucky enough to get some icing on it. My only major critique would be this: where was the cinnamon in my cinnamon bun? Barrios has the ambiance old north enders flock to. We went mid morning on a Saturday and to our surprise there were still a few treats left. I got a latte and almond croissant! I was very pleased with the presentation for the almond croissant, and thought the dough was delightfully crispy. I wished for slightly more almond filling but overall I recommend the croissant, one of the best bakery spots in Burlington I've found so far. The hot latte hit the spot for a crisp fall morning and even though I got a small, I was energized for the full day. I would go back again, I would love to try some of the other pastries they had to offer!
