This is a hidden gem. A great neighborhood cafe filled with happy patrons. The staff were efficient and friendly and knew the product well. The croissants were flaky and buttery. If you ever daydream about wandering the streets of Brooklyn and stumbling into a hole in the wall bakery, Barrio is the place for you. The high molded ceilings and the minimalistic decor begs to be named hipster's paradise. I ordered a cinnamon bun. While the shape was odd and I was wary of the amount of icing, I could tell that the outside was crispy and crystallized even from behind the display case. The inside was cakey and soft in a delightful juxtaposition to the exterior. The icing was thick and creamy with notes of vanilla bean coming through in each bite lucky enough to get some icing on it. My only major critique would be this: where was the cinnamon in my cinnamon bun? Barrios has the ambiance old north enders flock to. We went mid morning on a Saturday and to our surprise there were still a few treats left. I got a latte and almond croissant! I was very pleased with the presentation for the almond croissant, and thought the dough was delightfully crispy. I wished for slightly more almond filling but overall I recommend the croissant, one of the best bakery spots in Burlington I've found so far. The hot latte hit the spot for a crisp fall morning and even though I got a small, I was energized for the full day. I would go back again, I would love to try some of the other pastries they had to offer! read more

Personal favorite is their sweet chocolate croissant or the savory ham and cheese croissant - both are super delicate and buttery, endless flaky layers of goodness! Whether you're getting just a coffee to go or settling into on of the books to sip and snack, it's a reliable spot to relax or do some work. The cafe/bakery is pretty small. It doesn't look like the normal cafe I usually go to. The line is pretty long as I noticed staff here are friendly and like to chitchat with people, which takes a longer time. While I think it is very nice of them, I was on my way to a meeting, thus noticed how long of a time they were taking. It was so long that the guy that had been waiting in front of me decided to leave in the middle of waiting. He probably ran out of time and had to go. Honestly, I can relate since my Lyft ride was just outside waiting for me to pick up a pastry! I waited in the long for a few minutes before I was able to get to the front and order myself a chocolate croissant. They were completely out of regular croissants so I only got to pick up a chocolate one. I also ordered a ginger lemongrass tea. Both were very good and exceeded my expectations. For such a small shop, I am quite impressed. If I were back in town, I'd be willing to stop by again and would be happy to get the same thing. Barrio is a great spot to take a friend, get coffee or tea, and sit and chat in the relaxing atmosphere. Also great for doing work-- I bring my laptop or a book here and set up shop. They have this lemon lavender tea cake which is as cute as it sounds. I've been here a few times and the bakery items are great! I love their ham and cheese croissant - it's perfectly flaky and crunchy. Not sure if I had what they consider their pizza because I got it during "bakery" hours but it was so good! The crust was like focaccia rather than your usual pizzeria thin crust. I've had their matcha and chai lattes and they were good but too milky for me. I like the variety of sugars that they have available too. I tried one of their savory biscuits, which is sold at Tight Squeeze Coffee Shop on College Street. It was a bacon, cheddar, and rosemary biscuit. DELICIOUS! I usually find biscuit to be a bit dry, but this was a moist, every so slightly chewy, savory biscuit. It didn't crumble like most biscuits. The edges of the biscuits are even better then the center, if that's possible. They cut the biscuits in a square, so there is plenty of edge, so no need to fight for a corner piece like when to buy a piece of brownie. :-) read more

I love Panadero! This bakery is run by a husband and wife duo, which makes it all the more charming. Panadero has recently expanded into the adjacent unit and now serves espresso and lunch sandwiches and soup in additional to their breads and pastries. Their croissants are amazing and some of the best I've ever had. The chocolate croissant is very popular and they frequently run out by the early afternoon (I happened to snag the last one!). The orange-hazelnut pastry was just as delicious. If you don't have a craving for sweets, try the savory biscuit, which has ham, cheese, and sage baked right into it. It's one of my favorites and gives Red Lobster's cheesy biscuits a run for their money. Panadero also bakes a different loaf of bread everyday for $5 (chipotle cheddar was on Thursday). A French baguette was $3 and the slightly larger and wider loaf of battard was $4. All of their baked goods were reasonably priced; nothing was more than $5. Panadero is definitely a hidden gem in the Old North End. read more

We came here for dinner. Sadly, it was disappointing. To be fair, we ordered 3 different pizzas, 2 with GF crusts. The Green Mountain was actually pretty good, but the Margherita and Tricolor (with pepperoni added) came off as bland and a bit underwhelming. (How can pepperoni taste underwhelming??). Wine was not amazing and over priced. Pizza seemed over priced as well. Needless to say, we went home several bills less and unsatisfied. The café itself is beautiful and charming. Our server was a very sweet and attentive young lady. Perhaps the bakery part of this establishment is better?? I'd be curious to try pastries or lunch, but we'll never return for dinner. read more

The staff at the counter always greet me with a smile and are quick churning out orders so lines move quickly. The coffee and pastries are great, and the lunch sandwiches on focaccia are maybe the best sandwiches in Burlington, IMO. It's a great space to hang out and get some work done or have a small meeting. They play music but it doesn't tend to be obtrusive. There is free wifi and lots of people bring laptops to get work done. As always, don't hog a table if you're done with your food/drink and there are no other free tables (I've never seen them ask anyone to leave though). read more

By night, a savory pizza shop with romantic and cozy live music joint (Pizzaria Barrio). And your split personality is something that I just can't get enough of. The staff here are always friendly and approachable and knowledgable about their coffees & pastries. In the mornings, you can expect to find people hunkered down with a book or a laptop, perusing the SevenDays or simply enjoying a well crafted caffeinated beverage. Highly recommend the Morning Glory Rolls or a savory breakfast sandwich, bur really, you can't go wrong with any of the fresh baked pastries. Additionally, if you aren't super particular about having your pastries be baked that day, they have a great & affordable 'day old' section at the front next to the check out. At night, the transformation of the space from bright, indie coffee shop to swanky pizza place is absolutely delightful. Soft lighting, open windows, the old reclaimed wood furniture & floors glow. You can do half and half pizzas (one pizza is definitely more than enough to satisfy two). Favorites here include anything with arugula, the Vermont Sausage, or the Pepperoni and Peppers. Definitely save room for dessert - there is always something tantalizing on special. Final tip: they have a very small outdoor seating section (the tables actually fold out from the side of the building) for those sunny, Burlington spring/summer/fall days! read more

I love Barrio Bakery. When we moved to the old north end I was super excited for it to be so close by. By day it is an amazing coffee shop with the best pastries in town! They also have a sugar bar with many, many different flavors of sugar. By night they serve the yummiest pizza with awesome toppings. The ambiance is lovely and sometimes they have live music! We ordered a bunch to pick up for my bachelorette party. Many of the gals were on gluten-free diets and and it was so nice that they have a gluten free option. I love this place! Panadero has become my base of operations for handling my heavy graduate school homework load. I tried out a lot of coffee shops before deciding that Panadero has everything I want. There is a lot of natural sunlight, a perfect amount of background chatter, ample street parking, other customers doing work/using their laptops, and, best of all, excellent pastries and coffee. Not all coffee shops have an emphasis on an assortment of high quality pastries. Panadero doesn't carry your standard few kinds of cookies, cinnamon rolls and some sandwiches (although those are present). There are croissants, quiches, cakes, scones, bars, tarts etc. etc. I haven't had the opportunity to stop in for their flatbread nights Thurs.-Sat. but I feel comfortable assuming they do that really well too. Most of the employees are really nice and seem to enjoy their job. If you enjoy spending a few hours in a pleasant environment with pastry and coffee I really recommend Panadero. Edit: One of the staff members here, who is very often on duty, is cold and rude to me. I assume its because I'm not one of the neighborhood locals despite the fact that I am a very frequent regular. Her sharp attitude and tendency to cut me off when I'm speaking is pretty off putting. I am trying to not let it affect my perception of this generally great bakery/coffee shop. read more

Love my little neighborhood bakery! I rarely make it in the mornings, but when I do I tend toward savory, rather than sweet pastries. Barrio always has a tasty selection of both. More often, I stop by Barrio in the evenings when it turns into a pizza spot. There's 1/2 price wine on Wednesdays, live music on Thursdays and Saturdays, a free app in exchange for a Facebook check-in, a cozy environment and delicious food. The bacon marmalade is crazy good - especially when I save some to dip my pizza crusts into. I love the pepperacha (pepperoni & sriracha) and weekly pesto special pizzas. I adooooore their baked goods: I could eat one of their rosemary sausage savory scones every day, and their day-old stuff (a bag of 3 for $3, under the cash register) is always a hit at the office. I came here for dinner for the first time the other night. Andrew and I split a prosciutto appetizer which came with focaccia, a beet and chevre salad, a Leah pizza (jalapenos and sausage), and a pint of beer apiece. Stumbled across this place on my very first jaunt out in Burlington and whoa, was it a find! The iced coffee was delicious and only two bucks. There was ample seating and the entire room was sun-lit and gorgeous. Could've easily hung out there all day. The baked goods were ever so tempting - they looked incredible, even more so because they were not hidden behind a glass wall or counter - just displayed right there in front of you, BAM. The foccacia I had was greasy but the buttery deliciousness hit the spot. They're big on local products like the rest of Vermont. The flavored sugars for my latte were also a special treat - lavender white granulated was my pick out of many choices.
