When in Burlington, stop at August First! It was crazy busy and there was a wait, so be prepared if you are traveling here during peak leaf peeping season. Wish we hadn't eaten breakfast before coming here because everything looked amazing. Loved the menu. We had to try their maple biscuits, so we grabbed one for later and one griddled with butter and homemade jams for immediate consumption. Sooo delish. I haven't had a biscuit this huge or one with this flavor..loved the tender, flakiness of the biscuit, but also that yummy crunch on the outside. Definitely a must try. The jam and butter were the perfect accompaniments. My absolute fave about August First is that I went grocery shopping and there was an entire section of their freshly baked breads. SO and I stopped here for lunch on Sunday on our way to Trois-Rivieres after reading some favorable reviews. We arrived at around 1130am and it was already packed...all tables inside and outside were filled. A couple finished up their lunch and we were able to swoop in on their table right when they left I had the Vermonter, which comprised of turkey, cheddar, red onions, lettuce, cranberry mayo and country french bread...a delicious sandwich! SO had the avocado toast, which I tried and was impressed by the hefty amount of avocado. They must also have good coffee because we saw a lot of customers ordering just coffee. We keep coming back here predominantly for the Maple Biscuit, because it is the best biscuit in the universe. They griddle til extra crunchy the bottom, the maple glaze is baked on top, the soft insides in between crunchy parts - served sliced & cut sides griddled & warm. Slathering on the local Ploughgate maple butter (best butter in the universe) & raspberry jam it comes with takes it over the top to biscuit nirvana. I used to get the breakfast sammich on this biscuit til I realized I ate the filling separately, so I could slather the butter & jam on the griddled biscuit halves. Now I plan better. Any breakfast sammich here is great, & the coffee is perfectly strong in the best way. The bacon is thick & perfectly cooked, the eggs perfectly runny, & whatever bread will be perfectly toasted. Note the pattern of perfection. We always try a few other bright shiny things. This time: Cruffin - filled w/blueberry jam & lemon curd, topped with torched merengue. Very delicious, more for dessert based on sweet level. Ham & cheese croissant - heated for a few seconds, this is REALLY GOOD. Crispety flaky layers, good ham & cheese. I love me a savory croissant & this represents all the reasons why. Sometimes the service here is curt, but this morning it was very warm. As a local I can attest to this place always being busy and 9/10 they are very efficient in getting through customers in a timely manner despite the line out the door. Lots of seating inside and outside (some picnic tables covered by tent for rain days). As an FYI-They ask customers not to use electronics in the bakery. Lots of paid meter parking on all the surrounding streets. Fresh food and ample serving sizes, though it is not super cheap. I would say fair. My favorite option on the menu is the ramen noodle salad**shared pics below**. It comes with noodles on top of a bed of lettuce as well as a bunch of dif fresh veggies, hard boiled egg, and a delicious soy sauce based sauce. Good service and food! It's a little busy and loud, but it is around lunch time (1:30pm) so that's fair. Total was $24 for a cooler drink ($3), and Lahi's Peanut Noodles ($13) with added pork belly ($6). The cold noodles were awesome, especially once I added a dash of sriracha. However, the pork belly smelled slightly weird and was extremely fatty (but no points docked for that as that's what you expect with pork belly! I did ask if the pork belly is really fatty and was told "not really, but it does have fat on it" which could confuse someone as it is extremely fatty). Overall, I liked my meal and it's portion size was filling. I'd come back to try the chickpea dish next time! Edit: I have a horrible stomach ache and feel like throwing up. Crisp with essence of honey on the outside, soft pillowy layers with the peach jam on the inside. Breakfast sandwich (the day maker) is what I chose was decent (brioche was perfect), but egg was a little over cooked. I would try the Eat the East next time. My boyfriend got that polenta with smoked salmon and eggs. The polenta was a rich dish and every bite delivered. So so tasty!! We even looked up how to buy the salmon, but can't since we aren't a restaurant. We were in burlington for a weekend but we liked this place so much we went twice! They have a number of baked goods to choose from but you must get the maple biscuit - it is phenomenal. To be fair, it's not quite the "normal" biscuit, but it'll be one of the best bread type things you've ever had. They also have baggies of "day old" biscuits cheaper and once you reheat those, it's just as excellent. We also tried their meal-ish items - the polenta, loaded fries, eat the east sandwich. Between two people, ordered the Maple Biscuit ($4), Apple Turnover ($4), Avocado Toast ($13), and two lattes ($4 each). Loved the apple turnover - flaky crust and flavorful filling without being too sugar forward. Maple biscuit has a nice crust and a large burst of maple if that's your thing. The avocado toast comes on a thick slice of multi grain bread that tastes fresh - and a good chunky avocado top. Coffee is strong and paired well with a cold afternoon. I ended up ordering a iced vanilla latte and a griddled biscuit. The iced latte was good, a tad sweet but had a lot of vanilla flavor. The biscuit though, holy cow. It checked off all the boxes of a good biscuit. It was flaky, it had layers, it was crisp on top but buttery and tender inside. This biscuit was glazed with maple and gave it a slight sweet crunch, but nothing that would overpower the biscuit flavor. It came served with blueberry preserves and it was a total compliment. I devoured my serving. Picked up another biscuit for the road and carried it in my August First tote ($10 a steal!).
