For the past few years I have not loved August First, because of their high prices and okay food. In the last month I have been there frequently and my opinions have totally changed. The ambiance makes up for the prices, with multiple seating choices such as sitting in a sunny window, or a private spot next to the wall. The service is quick and all of the employees are wonderful. First off - if they have cinnamon buns - buy them quick! We bought 1 from a full tray. We tasted it then immediately got back in line to buy more to take home and they were gone! We also ordered the Vermonter sandwich as well as a breakfast sandwich- both freshly made and delicious. We got a loaf of jalapeños cheddar bread to go- so good !! Service was fast and friendly. Excellent choice for breakfast! This a vibrant and lively eatery which gets very busy on weekend mornings! The wait was worth it since the food was excellent! We had the maple granola with vanilla yogurt and the avocado toast with added smoked salmon and fried egg. The maple granola was definitely freshly made in house and with good flavor and dense with healthy ingredients. It wasn't too sweet either. The vanilla yogurt gave a nice tart contrast for the granola! The avocado toast was topped with smoked salmon and fried egg and was superb! The toast itself was also freshly baked and wonderful! Best coffee in the Burlington, VT by faaaaar. Absolutely hands down best breakfast around too. Egg and cheese on a croissant... going back again tomorrow for the same thing. Great cafe/bakery and a lovely place to grab either a quick bite or get brunch. Plenty of seating options esp in the summer time with outside seating as this place gets very busy. Get there early if you want their maple biscuits. We all wanted them however they were gone at 1PM. One of the special of the day was polenta with cured salmon. The polenta was excellent and creamy without being cheese and cream heavy. Personally I didn't like the chicken BanhMi as it had parsley instead of cilantro. Dnt get me wrong: if considered as just a sandwich it is 10/10 however it was not mentioned to me while ordering (the menu had cilantro). Their coffee is great and a few other drinks are also great. The avocado toast was fresh and the bread is crispy and doesn't get soggy. The pickled onions on the top adds much needed acidity and balances well with the creamy avocado without overpowering the flavor. Will definitely go back if I am again in the area. read more

Stopped here right before closing during the week and was not disappointed! Even at 30mins to close, the shop was still bustling with people eating, socializing, and putting in orders, which let me know people were dedicated to August First. My parents two sandwiches, the Don and the BLT and they both said they were delicious! I wasn't feeling too hungry, so I just got the maple biscuit with maple butter and jam and I was not disappointed!! Outstanding breakfast at this place! Seems to be one of the best places in Burlington for an exceptional overall breakfast / brunch. Excellent high quality egg sandwiches on brioche buns, delicious salads and pastries I do need to comment though and say that the espresso I ordered was not good. Very bitter and as someone who drinks coffee / espresso every day, I couldn't finish this one. Maybe I got a bad batch but would look into this. Stumbled upon this spot on a road trip to Burlington. I loved the rustic and farm fresh vibe of the restaurant and friendly service. I got the Day maker breakfast sandwich which was fairly good. Those of who have not tried the maple biscuit have yet to truly live. When I first ordered my brunch, I had the smoothie bowl and the hash brown with sausage. The dishes were made to order and excellent in taste. The smoothie bowl was like a refreshing, somehow fusing the concepts of brunch, breakfast, and libation all at once. The hash brown dish had soft, perfectly cooked potatoes. The veggies included within were also crisp yet cooked at the same time. The only issue was that I had also ordered the maple biscuits but the cashier claimed they were all out. After some quick interrogation, he informed me that they make continued batches throughout the day. I was nearly denied my amber-covered condiment heaven. Everyone raves about August First and I can see why. It's in a beautiful part of town and the inside is stunning. The high ceilings make for an airy dining area. There are tables outside. The menu is impressive. What I did love was the coffee and my wife enjoyed her maple biscuit. However, I ordered eggs and potatoes and it was not good. The eggs were dried out and the potatoes flavorless for having herbs on them. If we were to go again, I'd just order coffee. read more

I am rather picky on the bread but this bakery knows how to do it - a crunchy but soft inside. My turkey with bacon was flavorful and had the right combination of greens and sauce. This sandwich was made with fresh cilantro, cumin chutney and maple sauce were delectable together. Nothing like having whole stocks of cilantro protruding from the edges of your brioche bun. It was FIRE. My bf had the standard breakfast sandwich with sausage, egg and cheese. It was so crispy yet warm, butter and soft on the outside. There's nothing quite like Vermont cheese in a sandwich. And the sausage was top notch. This place is super efficient and there's plenty of seating. Staff is professional and welcoming. I really, really wanted to like this place because it's so cute and they make the whole block smell like bread in the morning, but I just can't like them enough to justify the bite it takes out of my wallet. The food is average, I've had some bad coffees, some of their baked items were either stale or just not good enough to finish eating, and it costs a decent amount more than I'd like to pay for what I'm getting in my cup or on my plate. I could just be nitpicky, but after going here three or four times I just don't see myself wanting to go back. They were also doing a lot for Covid including plastic partitions between tables, sanitizer at the door, limiting time dining in. Heads up, they are not allowing people to sit and work like you would at a coffee shop because of Covid.
