Greek Chop Salad & Miso Black Cod
    Matt H.

I love this place. Everyone needs their go to spot for American food for the casual night where you just want a solid meal no frills American bar is this spot for me. I have been countless times and will keep coming back. While the food is nothing mind blowing it's always solid. The service is always great and the ambience perfect for whatever evening you're intending to have. The chopped and Greek chop salad are always great and the miso black cod is wonderful. We even ordered a second miso black card the last time we were there. They make a great martini and always have the perfect aesthetic.

Great service but our food was just OK, the salad was a bit vinegary and could be chopped. The pornstar martini was separated which isn't my preference. well decorated and cute glasses

Not going to lie I was stoked to eat here and the food did not disappoint. This place gets booked up quick every night of the week so be sure to get a reservation ahead of time. The inside of the place is also insanely quaint and just an overall great vibe. I would highly recommend if in the area. We got 4 total dishes ordered the burger but the salmon and the chicken also came out tasty. Cheers!

The spinach artichoke dip is to die for. It is an absolute favorite and you need to order it. We also ordered the lobster pasta and burger which were both solid. We were seated in the outdoor heated tent and really enjoyed it and appreciated the quality service we received here.

I was visiting New York for a short two day weekend and I stumbled upon this bar and I am so happy I've been thinking about this place for about two weeks. I had the dirty martini and it was the best martini in my whole life. There was a hint of blue cheese in the vodka mix. The bartender was very nice and the vibe was quaint and gave young professional. Overall, I would come here again, and I would try the food but just based off of the dirty martini, I would give it 50 stars. Also, my dining partner stated that the old-fashioned was very good .

A group of 6 of us came at noon and who knew American Bar is a VIBE for lunch. Ambiance was almost better at lunch, I don't know what it was. I ordered the espresso martini as I know they're GAS here, but immediately regretted it when I tasted someone else's breakfast martini. The fusion of Tito's, Orange Marmalade, and lemon had me feeling like I was sitting on the beach in the South of Italy under a striped umbrella just enjoying my existence. Not Positano though, it gets too crowded. We started with pigs in a blanket and they were straight heat, as they almost always are. They are undebatably one of the most underrated appetizers in the game. Pigs in a blanket gotta be 6th man of the year... The 3 of you that consistently read my reviews know that I'm on a quest to find the best steak frites in the city, so when I seen it on the menu I had to pull the trigger. The 8oz hanger steak came with maitre'd butter and some well done thin fries. Not steak sauce on top thank GOD. When a steak comes with steak sauce, one can't help but wonder what they are hiding. What you scared of? Let that steak be eaten for what it is. The steak came medium rare and was cooked PERFECTLY. Fries were good to but to be honest I am a sucker for some thick cut fries or shoestring fries. One extreme or the other... that's personal preference though. I mean everything kind of a personal preference ahahha. We got the check and headed to the Spaniard as one does after a meal in the West Village. All in all, I have it ranked 3rd on my NYC steak frites ranking behind Virginia's and Pastis. I've only tried like 8 though ahahaha they be expensive. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews

Was so excited to eat at American Bar after having cocktails at the bar a number of times and the experience was disappointing. We were a few minutes late to our reservation due to public transportation issues and had to wait in line while others checked in at the restaurant, once we were in front of the hostess she was very rude saying "she was just about to give our reservation away", and that "we need to make sure we are wrapped up by 9:30 because they need the table back". First off none of the above needed to be said, she could have just said "welcome, we will seat you in just a moment" the additional context is just unnecessary and rude! We are sat quickly and our server comes over and takes our drink order and asks if we are ready to order food (this in four minutes after we were sat) we knew what we wanted to order as an appetizer but had not had time to decide on anything else; the server seemed annoyed and told us that we need to put our entire order in, so we all just made a split decision as we felt pressured. Here is what we had and our thoughts on the dishes: Appetizer: - Spinach and artichoke dip (this was really great and I loved the chips that came with it) Main course: - Salmon (very dry and overcooked, also I have never had a restaurant ask me how I want my Salmon cooked) - hamburger (my boyfriend said that it was an overpriced five guys burger at best and that there are better hamburgers in the city) - bolognese (good, but nothing to write home about). The two items on the menu that were actually good are the spinach dip and the French fries. I would recommend coming to American Bar to sit at the bar and have a cocktail and fries, don't waste your time sitting at a table and eating mediocre food. The two stars are for the Ambiance and the dip. I will not be returning to American bar and I used to love dropping into this place for a nightcap.

    Spring Rolls

Such a great experience! Food was amazing, probably the best salad (peanut chicken) i've had in a while. The only negative thing I would have to say is that we asked for the dressing on the side and it came tossed but the taste made up for it. And then we ordered the spring rolls and they were so good so flavorful crispy crunchy everything was amazing about them. We wanted to order more but we were very full. The salad is very big so I recommend getting that as your entrée or sharing with someone (please do half versions of all your salads). I then got the Lychee martini which was good, but it wasn't a very flavorful Lychee profile, so not sure if I would order again. Lastly, my friend ordered the espresso martini which was very frothy and all the right flavors. We walked in last night around 6:30pm looking to grab some food. There wasn't tables available but bar was first come first serve. While we were standing there a resy notification for the bar popped up at 7:15pm so while we waited we went across the street to grab a drink and then we asked the host to text us if the bar seats opened up sooner which she did so thank you! Overall, this experience was amazing and I'm looking to come back and try the pigs in a blanket and burger.

Sat at the bar w my friend and had so many glasses of wine and an amazing salad w fries. It's beautiful inside but they also offer outdoor seating. I'll be dreaming about that salad for a while.

Great service and great food! Our water glasses were always full and the food came out quick and hot. Very happy with the chicken paillard and the spicy lobster pasta.

This fry + salad + cocktail combo is TOP tier. The fries were the perfect amount of crisp and the sauce was delicious. The salad was such a good portion size & so tasty. The drinks were made to perfection. I will be back!!

Such a great experience here. The atmosphere is so New York. I love the graphics on the menus, postcards, and match boxes. And the food was delicious. The Syrah wine was a really good dry red. We started with the brussels sprouts which were perfectly crispy with Parmesan. I got the Caico e Pepe for my meal and it had the perfect texture and peppery taste (the Saturday special). I tried my friend's peanut chicken salad which was delicious too - you know it's a good place when even the salad is worth getting. Would absolutely come back!

We also got the steak which was cooked perfectly, along with pasta and a burger. There was a small mix-up with our order and they accidentally brought out an extra pasta, but our server fixed it right away and took care of it without us even having to ask. Service throughout dinner was honestly great. We also tried a couple drinks and ended up staying for a while because we liked the atmosphere so much. It may be the best looking burger I've ever had. It tasted really good too, but for me it didn't quite live up to the hype. It was a very good burger, just not the best I've had. My wife had the fried chicken sliders, which unfortunately were pretty unmemorable. The chicken really could have benefited from more seasoning. Service was average, not bad by any means, but nothing that stood out either. Overall I'd give it 3.5 stars, I'm glad I finally tried Au Cheval and the burger was definitely good, but considering all the hype, I was a little let down by the overall experience. I'll have to try the original Chicago location at some point for comparison!

Ambiance: This place has a nice ambiance, definitely very "New York" -- dark (you can't see how dirty the floor is) and loud music (maybe too loud). We sat upstairs (we had a reservation) and of all the people on the top there was a party of 4 (us), a party of 8 (all dudes celebrating something) and the rest of the tables were on a DATE - which I thought was funny. Service: We were served by Ann-Marie who was so delightful. She was kind, super nice, and took the time to speak to us (which is basically how we figured out she wasn't a native New York City person). She gave us good food suggestions and we were very happy with our selection. Food: Here is what we ordered * Steak Frites: My two boys got the steak frites and I have to say the steak was awesome! I had a bite of each of theirs and they each ordered it differently (one Medium Rare/Medium and one Medium) and they both were prepared PERFECTLY. The fries were overflowing. * Caeser Salad with Salmon: My wife got the salad with Salmon (they only have a few salad options) and she enjoyed it. * Prawn and Crab Risotto: I got this and I have to say it was VERY bland. I wouldn't get this if you are looking for taste. I had to put salt and pepper on it to make it have any semblance of taste. Value/Price: I would say this is not over priced but it is not cheap either...bill is attached. I would recommend it to folks who are looking for a good place to either go out on a date or a family type meal.

Did an earlier dinner on a Saturday with a friend at the bar. We got some similar items, some different. The thing I kept the same was my martinis and all three (sour cream and onion, tomato, and espresso) were just as amazing as ever. Food-wise, I stuck mainly to the classics with one new dish: - Pizza rolls: Very good but 3 pizza rolls for $20 felt small to me. I feel like I remember seeing others served more when I've gone in the past, but not completely sure. They're nostalgic and fun, nothing to die for. - Fries: Great as ever, we opted for just one of the sauces (avocado dill). - French Dip: This used to be cut in 3 pieces and now it's 2. Works well with a duo but I do think it's actually a little smaller now than before when I compare photos. - Samoa sundae: Still amazing, still so so worth. It was fun going with a friend who hadn't been before and seeing the joy upon trying the dish! Walking up after greeting you, the first question the door guy asks is if you have a reservation. After being let in (once you said yes), there is a another line at the host stand to verify the reservations, then to be seated. This area is a narrow space between the bar and the staff behind the podium so there will still be a smaller wait outside for those waiting to get in due to tight space. Once seated, the bartender Meaghan came over immediately to greet us, offering sparkling, still or tap water. Alongside your glass, there was a selection of citrus (lemon/lime/orange) or cucumber to add which was a nice touch. Although I already had an idea of what I wanted, I went a completely different direction once she mentioned the off-menu selections. This ended up being the heirloom tomato salad (I know, when the heck have I ever ordered anything like this) which was $20, and a side of their hand-cut fries, $13.95. You are to order everything at once, and they course it out accordingly. The people next to me ordered a lot of food; most of it the popular items which I veered away from with the exception of the fries. The party on the other side of me went with two items I was considering prior so it was nice to see what these looked like up close. The tomato salad was very good! I normally scrape off onions but I actually ate all of them and the taste didn't 'stay with you' which I was grateful for, while the basil flavor was a nice contrast. These were the larger beefsteak style tomatoes so I was fork and knifing this dish. I will admit this, along with the fries, were a little more salty than what I am used to but it was delicious overall. I almost considered a sauce with the fries but they honestly did not need it; the flavor was more than enough on their own. Wasn't planning on it, but I ended up adding the apple hand pies ($19) which were pretty good. They didn't have anything chocolate-based, so this was the next best thing. Since they come in an order of two, I ended up taking the other hand pie back to the hotel. Restrooms are right past the bar, down a flight of steps and there are two single-sex doors. If you are seated at the bar, you pretty much have no reason to go past that into the dining room so it felt like a subtle off-limit area (and staff was there to direct you where to go). Truth is, I really didn't want to like this place. I didn't want to have to deal with scoring a reservation in the future however the food I had was decent (and there are still some items I want to try), service from the doorman, Meaghan, the food runners, and hostesses was fantastic, and the atmosphere was great. You'll end up talking to fellow diners comparing dishes, and it made for an enjoyable experience all around. I'd say it was worth it.
