This place is BUSY! We arrived around 8 and waited half an hour for a 2 top by the bar. I felt bad for our waiter who was running around a lot and don't blame him for fact we had to ask for silverware, tortillas for fajitas, and were delivered the wrong drinks - all of which was rectified when we told him. The food wash fresh and a nice break from the cheese laiden Tex Mex places (which I'm not knocking!). The place needs a deep clean - the pepper mill on the table had mold growing in it and the vents were caked in layers of dirt and grime. Accidentally stumbled upon this authentic and appetizing Mexican restaurant since the original restaurant my girlfriend and I planned to dine at had a private party dinner that evening . No biggie. Though I wasn't initially in the mood for Mexican food, it quickly became a memorable and serendipitous experience. We decided to sit at the bar and order off their Happy Hour menu. I hardly remember names which is a big 'no bueno' but these bartenders were so kind I have to give a shout-out to Victor and Victoria. They checked up on us regularly but I did not feel pressured to make conversation or to order more food or drinks. We made light banter and they gave great food and cocktail suggestions on the following from their Happy Hour menu: Food: Street Corn (Elotes) - I love corn so this has always been a go-to appetizer for me. The corn was soft to bite into and the seasoning was tasty and tangy. Chicken Tinga Empanadas - Hands down, the best item on their HH menu. We ordered four of these. Flaky on the outside and juicy on the inside! Chicken Taquitos - They were a little dry but I still ate it, but would not order it again (and order more of the Chicken Tinga Empanadas lol) Tuna Tostada - I found it to be overpowering in flavor. The tuna itself was quite salty. Sadly I did not finish it and the bartender noticed and comped it to our surprise. (Thanks for the exceptional service and listening to our feedback!) Molotes - I love plantains and this was filled with chorizo so it was unique for me as it was my first time ever trying Molotes. Cocktail: I usually like to order on the rocks or neat but Victor suggested the Jamaica Mule with Del Maguey Vida and I enjoyed it. I asked for it not to be too sweet and he made it perfectly. For my next drink, I ordered the Montelobos Mezcal on the rocks and it was superb. In hindsight now, I don't think it was an accident upon stumbling here. I love how they decorated this restaurant! It's very lively and nice. This would make a good spot to celebrate a birthday. Our waiter Z was very informative and friendly. We started off with some margaritas. I got the cucumber jalapeño margarita that was very refreshing with a mild spice. We got the complimentary chips and salsa. Our waiter asked if it was our first time at the restaurant and we told him yes so the manager came by with complimentary elote to welcome us as first time customers! I really appreciated this gesture and the elote was delicious. I'm usually not a corn person but I would make an exception for this. We also go the tostada ceviche as an appetizer. This was pretty good but not our favorite. For our entree, we ordered the chicharron de ribeye. This was on their rotating menu. The beef was very tasty and their tortillas are so good! I recommend trying both the flour and corn. I personally liked the flour more but their corn tortilla is the best corn tortilla I've had at a restaurant in Houston. Celebrated my birthday here with family. They were able to accommodate all 17 of us with no problem. The staff was very attentive from the start. Our waiter was amazing even though we were a big party he kept up and made sure we didn't need anything. Now let's talk about the food OMG it was delicious and the portions were enough to share. The only thing that I think could be different is that the mimosa could be a little less juice and more champagne. Also some place seem like the air conditioner can't keep up with this Texas heat, but this was not the case here so bring a light sweater if you get cold. Today, we came during 6ish happy hour-dinner time. Hostess greed us and said, "Happy hour are only for outside patio and at the bar?" Margaritas are really good. Menus are not cheap...so we thought perhaps the food will be really good. Tuna Tostadas was drenched in soy sauce which makes the tuna too salty to eat, couldn't eat them. My friends ordered the quesadillas and tortillas was wet. Street corn is okay, too much lime juice. Some folks might like lots of lime juice on them but too much take away the flavors. It took the waiter a long time to come take our orders and distribute our bills. I ordered beef quesadillas and got home was beef enchilada. Our carry out orders got mixed up somehow. As I'm watching him go up to another employee just to say that we only left him a $4tip from the $100 I paid just to see the other employees make eye contact with me like we're just rude ppl I really didn't appreciate that cause what he didn't know was I had more cash to add to his tip to give him and once I did he still seemed upset like if I'm obligated or he's entitled to my bigger tip I honestly feel like I should ask for the tip I left him back that was very unappreciated I didn't have to leave a thing but I did and the way they looked at my family as we left was so degrading like if we done something wrong which my family didn't . Been here a couple times now and have nothing negative to say. We've tried a few different appetizers (the street corn on the cob is the most flavorful I've ever had and the chicken empanadas are perfect). Chips and salsas (red and green) are also flawless. I can only describe the Pastel Azteca entree as sort of a Mexican lasagna with tortillas and poblano sauce instead of pasta and marinara - it's a comforting dish I loved. Also, the atmosphere/decor inside this restaurant is really special - the owners clearly sunk time and money into the renovation compared to the place before them. Best part for last though - the service! We had waitress Chloe both visits and she was on top of everything, plus crazy friendly and gave us all kinds of detail about the menu. I went with the short ribs polenta, the description claimed it was braised for 5 hours. So if you are familiar cooking short ribs you know how tender these can be especially if braised for 5 hrs. Well this wasn't it, these tasted as if frozen and super rubbery with no tenderness. I had heard about Ambriza for years and was finally in Katy this week where there is one. The restaurant is beautiful with high ceilings, a modern design and young hip waistaff. The chips are not greasy at all and the red and green salsas are delicious and not too spicy. I ordered fish tacos which come with rice and beans. I got the vegetarian refried black beans. The serving of beans was generous. My problem with the fish tacos is that they rarely have any filling. The piece of fish was a skinny strip. That's the skinniest taco I remember having in recent years. At $14, Ambriza can do better. I'm reluctant to go to their happy hour. They have a baja fish taco for $7. If the taco is a tortilla with a minute piece of fish, I wouldn't order it. read more

They also play upbeat music throughout the day. I went with a party of 5 in which everyone had issues with there meal. From cheese being added when it was asked to be omitted due to lactose intolerance, missing condiments that were asked to be placed on the side, not receiving fruit and undercooked tortillas to even broken chipped coffee cups and dirty dishes. I have not seen such a catastrophe ever and will not revisit this location due to the mishaps... and it was not busy, there was "maybe" 7 tables occupied which is rare. Maybe you have better luck but my visit to this location was a huge 2 thumbs down. read more

This restaurant is in the clock tower in la Centerra. The interior aesthetics are beautiful--you're welcomed by two 'Day of the Dead' skeletons that are dressed up. Inside there are these huge windows that allow in natural lighting that gives it a glowing, sunny feel inside. Absolutely beautiful! I ordered the enchiladas con mole which personally I do not recommend. Their mole did not taste good as I've had at other Mexican restaurants. For appetizers (which came out at the same time as our entrees) was Brussels sprouts--it tastes great and I do recommend them. The Brussels sprouts were the cheapest on the menu. My friend I dined with ordered their chicken lunch bowl and she said it was great. Service overall was good so no complaints there. read more
