We decided to come to Ambar for dinner as we haven't in a while and it's just as great as I remember. One thing I love about this restaurant is their care for people with allergies and their separate menu for that. It makes it so much easier to order and partake in the bottomless food with the entire table and have no worries. The lamb lasagna was amazing that I needed two rounds of that. I also loved the carrots. I also recommended adding in the drinks. They are full sized drinks and aren't watered down by any means. Highly recommend this restaurant for brunch and dinner. read more

I had not been to this restaurant in years and wanted to try it again, as it was my go-to spot when I used to live in Arlington. They have a large menu of traditional Serbian/Balkan dishes, which tastes like a mix of Eastern European food and Middle Eastern food. I came on a Friday night with my mom. The restaurant was dimly lit (nice for a date night) and crowded. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. We ordered eight dishes, which was more than enough for two people: Variety of dips with pita and cornbread- we loved most of the dips, especially the urnebes (spicy feta dip), ajvar, and beet tzatziki. I don't normally like beets, but it works so well in this dip. It also came with marinated olives and pickled vegetables. Cheese pie- very good, me and my mom thought this was one of the better things we ordered. Forest mushroom crepe- a crepe with mushrooms in a savory sauce/gravy. We also thought this was one of the better things we ordered. Balkan salad- a must if you come. One of the better salads I've had. Sarma- stuffed cabbage with pork belly, rice, and vegetables. We were a little disappointed by this, we thought the pork was a little tough and the entire dish a little flavorless. Halloumi- we also thought this wasn't the best. The halloumi was a little bit dry and tough. Eggplant moussaka- I wouldn't order this again. The eggplant was undercooked, a pet peeve of mine. A lot of restaurants don't seem to cook eggplant enough. Fire roasted peppers- a very light dish. It was fine, but I wouldn't order it again. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe we chose the wrong dishes, but this time, we only enjoyed half of the dishes we ordered. Ambar unlimited brunch tapas plays no games and just because it's small doesn't mean you won't get full. The mimosas were strong and delicious as well as the sangria. My sister was in town and I wanted to do something different so we booked a table. We arrived and were promptly seated in a very comfortable booth we each ordered a drink and ordered dinner. Our server explained the process but we didn't pay attention and I don't think it mattered. They started bringing food almost immediately. From loaves of warm soft bread to a goolash, Balkan lasagna, chicken topped with a coleslaw almost imperceptibly spicy. An hour passed and we were stuffed, but they kept bringing food, everything was deliciou. My only regret is we had no room for dessert. Note that the meal is pre-fixe at $49 so it's not an inexpensive meal but it is all you can eat. I came to Washington DC over the summer as a tourist. To see the sights and eat the food. I had been to DC about five years before, and I had only been to one restaurant in my time there. Little did I know that that restaurant happened to be one of the best in town. Five years later, I run my food algorithm and see where I want to eat, and this place is apparently still banging. Very excitedly, I made my reservations and anxiously awaited the day to come. We get there and get ushered upstairs to our nice little booth right by the bar and lit nicely by the sun shining through the stained window. Our server explained the menu, and asked us what we wanted to start with. The next hour and a half was a whirlwind of delicious small plates, one after the other. And I mean small plates. Usually, places like this give you pretty decent portions, which is nice in some ways, but it ultimately limits the amount of different items you can try in one sitting. What we got at Ambar were very small plates, enough for a couple of bites each. Literally perfect. I can't remember everything we had. I think we tried 14 things. But I remember that some of the highlights were the: Lamb Lasagna (lamb ragu, eggplant, tomato, bechamel) Pork Neck (miso-mustard tarragon sauce, peanut & bacon crumble, mashed potato) Mushroom Flatbread (house-made bread topped with cremini mushrooms, sautéed leeks & fresh arugula) Raspberry Cake (cake dough, whipped cream cheese, raspberry jelly marmalade topped with chocolate glaze) Get all four of these things, and then get everything else as well. We were looking for a place to meet up with an old friend (it has been several years since we've last seen her), and our friend made a reservation at Ambar. Overall, it was OK, but there were some annoying issues. Here are my observations: - We were seated for our 6:30pm reservation inside in a room that was just outside the kitchen and bar. Overall, it seemed nice when we arrived, but as the evening went on, the door to the kitchen swung open constantly and the room actually got so loud that it was hard to speak with each other. - Our server came by and asked us what food we wanted before even offering to get us drinks. He also didn't even acknowledge that there was an a la carte menu, which is much lower priced...I asked about it based on seeing it on Yelp so he went and got one so that we could at least glance at it. He did say that either everyone has to order either a la carte or everyone has to order the unlimited menu. - At the very beginning, we told our server that we would want to split the check (my wife and I on one tab and our friend on the other). At the end of the meal, he only brought one check and when I asked about the separate checks, he acknowledged the error and returned with two checks (although he still hadn't accurately recorded the drinks...but we decided to ignore that). - We all ended up ordering the unlimited dinner experience. The food ended up being very good, and the portions were bite-sized so each was perfect to split by three people. The only issue I had is that the runners would dump the dish on our table, say the name quickly, and then dash away so fast that often I had to call someone over to tell us what the dish actually was. It wasn't really a very pleasant dining experience for the price paid ($49.99 per person). - 3.5% restaurant surcharge added to the bill. - My drink sat empty at times as our server seemed to have forgotten about us. Bottom line: The concept is unique and the food was good, but it is way overpriced for what you get (both in terms of food and service). I wouldn't go back. read more

I want to say it's the best Balkan food we've ever had - and that 100% rings true - but it's also some of the best food we've had in general. Such a wonderful treat to be able to stumble across this restaurant while visiting Washington D.C. This restaurant is designed in an old Balkan tradition with a modern twist - everyone at the table pays a flat rate for the meal (we came for dinner, so it was $50/person), and you can order whatever you want/as much as you want on the menu. We were a party of 2, so all the plates we got were small plates - enough to be able to truly taste and enjoy the dish without eating too much of it so we can try all the other delicious meals on the menu. There was not a single dish we tried that we did not like - our top 3 dishes included the Stuffed Peppers, Smoked Sausage, and Chicken Skewers. So delicious! After trying Cka ka Qellu and some of the other new standout Albanian restaurants in NYC, I've been on a bit of a Balkan kick. It certainly doesn't hurt that I've now started to see the shared culinary heritage with their Turkish neighbors to the south, one of my long-time favorite cuisines. As part of the unlimited dinner menu, the standouts were the ajvar, a red pepper eggplant paste with a light sweetness; the Istrian gnocchi, which gives a sense of the culinary exchanges seen in Croatia closer to the border of Slovenia and Italy; and the cheese pie, which is a soft borek akin to su böreği. If we had any complaints, it was probably the mediocre baklava, which tasted like something one might pick up at Trader Joe's. Everything we ordered was shared and neatly sampled - and in the off-chance it wasn't enough, you just get another one! That's the beauty of unlimited ; ) Ambiance: lively, hip and happening. At the ripe olde age of 33 my time in this scene is ending, but I can definitely see the young crowd having a lovely time here. Also important to note that you can actually SEE what you're eating and HEAR your dining companions, so that's nice. Food: I really should have snapped pics. The spreads were great - especially the pepper-based ones - asparagus was lovely, halloumi slapped of course, lamb medallion was nice, ditto the skewers. I first found out about Ambar at the beginning of 2023 and once I saw that they had all you can eat food I knew had to go. I had the 55$ dinner Balkan experience. The service was pretty good, you just request which food items you want from the menu and then they bring it to your table. The time it took for the food to get to the table ranged from slow at certain points (beginning-early middle) to fast at certain points (late middle-near end). Our waitress was pretty great, she was helpful with explaining the menu and she even gave me a complimentary dessert when I was indecisive in choosing between two differnet desserts with my single dessert choice. The dinner Balkan experience delivered many different food options (with many different food flavors) that were pretty good to solid (we pretty much tried everything on the menu). You must make it a point to dine at this restaurant. We tried so many small plates with wonderful flavors. Nothing disappointed us. We went during restaurant week and we learned that there was not too many changes to the menu if you timed outside of restaurant week. Nothing disappointed. The chef came out and spoke to us many times and was very engaging, and the staff was all very polite. It struck me as interesting in a good way was many people asked us throughout our dining experience if we had any food allergies. Make it a point to come to this restaurant when you are in DC. Wow!!!! What an amazing experience dining at AMBAR!!! This is an unbeatable deal for what you're paying. In my opinion, this is the best bottomless lunch you're going to find in DC. There is a 2 hour limit for each table which was initially worrying, but you probably don't need the full 2 hours to eat. I have had negative experiences at other "all you can eat" places where they stall the food to extend the time. However, at AMBAR, you can feel that the staff truly cares about their customers getting the full experience of exploring the menu. Every dish was delivered quickly and orderly. The staff were extremely attentive and always made sure the table had an order coming in. Our lovely server, Courtney, was so attentive and genuine! He made our experience so amazing! Sean, the manager, was also there to introduce the menu and start us off with some dishes which were at our table right away. This amazing staff were just so hospitable and they truly work to make your experience unforgettable. I am amazed by the sheer quality of every single plate that came out - Lunch price for restaurant week was only $25, but dining at Ambar is worth multiples more than what we paid for. This needs to be on everyone's restaurant week list - such a bang for your buck. We left feeling stuffed, and for the quality & quantity, this was an absolute steal. Biti Zdrava! What an awesome place. Since this place is super popular, reservations are highly recommended for brunch. I think we were lucky because we only had to wait for 25 minutes for a spot at the bar without a reservation. The AYCE brunch for $34 (an additional $13 for unlimited brunch cocktails) is a generous deal and a perfect way to experience a little bit of everything that Ambar has to offer. The plates are small, but you can order as many or as little as you like within the 2-hour window. Since the brunch menu is quite extensive, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. While everything on the menu was delicious, my favorites were the beet tzatziki, Balkano, Balkan Kebab, and mushroom pilav. Also, all of the sliders were quite delicious. Honestly, there wasn't anything on the menu that I didn't like. In addition to the delicious food, the service was great, and our bartender, S, was AMAZING. Also, our hostess was super friendly and respectful. Although most brunchers will stick to mimosas and Bloody Marys, we decided to try a tasting of Ambar's selection of rakijas. I definitely cannot wait to visit again. read more

For the price, unbeatable. 5/5. The food, marvelous. My favs were the croquettes, baby carrots, pork belly, the mussels (that sauce), all of the spreads and their bread. 4/5. Delish all around! I came here for brunch and really enjoyed the entire experience. We got bottomless mimosas and were able to choose from multiple flavors. We got about 6 or 8 different plates and I literally could not choose a favorite - they were all so good! Also, our waiter really elevated the experience. He was so friendly and funny with us and was quick to refill our drinks (he really let us have that bottomless mimosa experience :)). Also, the restaurant itself is gorgeous. The floral decoration and natural lighting really added to the overall fantastic vibes and I cannot wait to return for another great brunch or meal experience! read more
