In all the years I've been to Belga, not once has it disappointed. The food is well prepared and thoughtfully presented. The staff is attentive but not intrusive. The beer selection is well curated and served appropriately cold. We went for Easter brunch. The fresh fruit cover waffles were served with maple syrup and were delicious. Found this place many years ago before I was a yelper and now found it again. This is a must go to in the DC area and near the Marine Barracks area on 8th street on Barracks Row. It's a quaint space with a wonderful staff. French can be heard by the staff and the food truly fits the Belgian style. Kaylie as the bartender is probably the best in town. She cares and talk to you and makes you truly feel welcome. She made me come back two days in a row. The food is top notch. Mussels and fries are a standard for Belgian food and this place does them in spades with amazing flavor and quality. They have an amazing beer selection and I was beyond excited to see Cuvee Des trolls on their menu which is the city beer of Mons Belgium. When we went for dinner, before closing, they didn't offer waffles on the menu. These are only served at brunch. Check times first if you want waffles is what I'm saying. When I look at photos of this restaurant it must have undergone a redesign. I'm impressed with the photos of the outdoor decks and greenhouse. They look charming and cozy. The inside of Belga is completely modern and simple with a massive, gorgeous, antique round wall pendant upon entering. I think this exquisite piece of architecture has been there for at least 17 years judging by one Yelp photo. There is really not much else on their walls except for a gigantic high-gloss photo of an adorable baby pig's nose. The gorgeous miniature brass LED light in the foyer area adds much charm. The Belga Cafe beer and wine lists were impressive and exhaustive. The table of contents for their beer and wine list is 37 pages! Under beers, here are the categories: 1.) Gluten-free and Non-alcoholic 2.) Pilsners, white and golden ales 3.) Red & Brown Ales, Saison 4.) Exceptional Triples & Quadruples, Abbey 5.) Belgian Trappist 6.) Americans, Belgian Ale 7.) The Lambic Family, the Big Bottles. Humbling, as I have much to learn about beer. The Straffe Hendrick Tripel - "deep malt character, rum and pears" - was glorious. It was everything a beer should be and enough for me to order it as a second beer. Strong and malty. Blanche de Belga is my absolute favorite. It's a white beer with aromas of citrus fruit and notes of orange and lime. It's light and how I love a beer. This was my first choice. There was a rich, syrupy peach mel - Pêche Mel - beer I also enjoyed. I do not know if this peach mel was from Brasserie Dubuisson Frères sprl, Bush or Scaldis. The mussels were artfully presented - with gorgeous greens and onions - but the broth was maybe 1/4 or so of the portion. The mussels were delicious, though most fell out of the top layer. The selection of mayonnaise and butters served with our mussels was impressive. The French baguette - dusted with something that looked like green matcha powder - came with a basil butter. We actually couldn't taste the bacon notes, and he said it was bacon, but we enjoyed the basil. The baguette also came with seaweed butter. It was a surprising pairing with mussels, though interesting. I liked the complexity of the flavors in the seaweed butter, ultimately. The burger was monumental in height. We ordered it medium well but the meat had little moisture even for a well-cooked burger. In fact, it tasted sturdy and I was quickly thirsty after one bite. This $25 burger left me with more of a question than satisfaction. The service - however - was extraordinary! It was the best I've had in a very long time. The new manager is 5-stars by every definition. He delivered over and above what we asked for. He knew what he was doing. He surprised and delighted us with his gracious service. I felt like Europe packed up and moved to DC. This was by far one of the cutest brunch places I've ever been to. There is literally a ski lodge cabin you eat in! Outside of the setting, all the food seems to have some authenticity to it. Now this was the first time I've had Belgian food, so take that with a grain of salt. The drinks were delicious. As one of DC's only Belgian restaurants, I was super excited when my Belgian friend (who is, naturally, a Belgian food expert) suggested we try out Belga Cafe for brunch. It was a lovely Saturday morning, so we ended up sitting upstairs in their outdoor bar area (lovingly named The Betsy and themed after chickens). The menu wasn't quite the authentic Belgian cuisine my friend was hoping for, but everything still looked delicious, so we deliberated for quite some time on what we wanted to order. Thankfully, our super friendly and endlessly patient server helped us to finally settle on a few of their signature items -- a plate of their famous green eggs for my friend, and the crispy egg on mushroom toast for me. The eggs were phenomenal; they were super fluffy and had a great earthy flavor from the pesto and creamed spinach. I'm sure they were dripping in butter, especially with the bacon and Gruyere, but they were green, so we could pretend that this was a "healthy" breakfast. The mushroom toast was equally decadent, with a thick, hearty loaf of country bread topped with earthy sauteed mushrooms. All of this was then topped with a ton of garlic, parsley, and fried kale (more green / veggies to help us pretend this was a healthy meal), as well as the star of the show -- a crispy fried poached egg. How they managed to give the egg a nice, deep-fried crust while still maintaining the soft, runny yolk is beyond me, but it was a phenomenal combination of textures. All in all, Belga Cafe / The Betsy is a delightful spot for a Belgian-ish brunch. They have a solid selection, friendly staff, and lovely atmosphere. I love Belga cafe, but I will only be going with a group of 6 or less in the future. The food is great and the employees are awesome, but they have pretty ridiculous billing policies imposed on groups of 8 or more. We got charged a 3% service fee, then they assessed 20% tip on top of the subtotal plus service fee, then they did tax on top of THAT total so we ended up paying close to 36% more beyond our base bill of items. Overall, the food at this restaurant is tasty. We tried two different types of waffles. One was the original waffle with whipped cream on the side because they do give you a generous portion and the chicken and waffles. The chicken and waffles were the star of the meal. I love the popcorn on top and the chicken was perfectly seasoned. For a cocktail, I recommend the Bellini! The only downside to this meal was the jerk turkey bacon. We were thinking that the entire pieces of Bacon we're going to be coated with jerk sauce. They were just drizzled on top. We recommend that the turkey bacon be brined in jerk sauce versus just drizzled on top because you really are just eating turkey bacon with sauce. Our waitress was also super generous and kind. I went for brunch at Belga Cafe during DC's Winter Restaurant Week - and what it was quite the treat. From the minute we walked in to the restaurant for our 1:45pm reservation, it was clear that it is a very popular brunch spot in the Barracks Row area. It was busyyy... But, as we had a reservation we were seated within the first 5 mins of arriving. Overall, everyone loved what they had. My friends both ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Thighs and Waffles - which they both enjoyed. I ordered the Omelette au Fromage Classique with the Bucket of Applewood Smoked Bacon, and it was great. We all devoured the Baba au Rhum for dessert - so, definitely make sure you give that a try if you're planning on going. Their cocktails were also good. We had the Aperol Spritz, Bart Simpson at Your Service and the Espresso Martini, and overall they were all ab fab. Yesterday for dinner, my partner and I visited Belga Cafe since I've been on a Euro cuisine kick recently. We indulged in beef stew, lobster and crab pasta, and baguette with butter. The lobster and crab pasta left us salivating for more as it was buttery, and the citrus from the lemon cut through the flavors. I like the unique plating. The beef stew was decent, but I felt like the beef was dry. The baguette tasted really delicious when we dipped into the stew. The seaweed butter was tastefully unique with our crispy baguette. Delicious! We reserved brunch for four and we're given the option to sit inside, outside, or on the covered rooftop. Inside was very loud with music and conversations. Although DC summer was not giving us its kindest temperature, we decided to go with the rooftop. We were one of only two groups, so it was quiet and not too hot. The Belgian style food and drinks were great! I've never had a poached egg nested in creamy potatoes and I plan on having it several more times. My friends made several selections from the robust beer menu and I joined in because they have lambics! Notes about the rooftop: you have to go into the alley and up stairs to reach it. We thought we'd try a new place on Capitol Hill for my husband's birthday, though we live in VA. We checked out the menu before making our reservation and saw they serve Mussels. But of course! I didn't want to stand outside, yet I wanted to be respectful of the gentleman who was seating us. I did my best, and he was so very patient. You know how important first impressions are. I was impressed! Anyway, let me get to the food and service. OUTSTANDING! Both food and service! We both selected the mussels. One classic and one spicy. Both fabulous! Served with IMO some of the best Belgian frites along with some on the side. No ketchup, please! It's not needed. We also ordered a baguette to dip into the sauce. It was served with bacon butter and seaweed butter. Both interesting! The beers we ordered were new to us. WOW! Corsendonk and St. Bernardous. You must try. Especially if you're not a fan of IPAs. I hate them. Oh, how I wish we lived closer to this wonderful establishment. I look forward to returning. We felt as if we were back in Brussels. That was already a disappointment in itself. Staff wasn't very personable in my opinion. I had trouble deciding and instead of helping, I was told that he'll come back to take my order if I haven't decided yet. Ambiance here is more of a casual cafe style. Came here on a Saturday late afternoon for a "snack" of mussels and bread lol They used to have a larger variety of mussel sauces to choose from which I miss dearly, but their standard white wine sauce and this chorizo sauce are both enjoyable nonetheless.
