I celebrated my birthday at Ambar on 8th Street SE in Washington, D.C., with a party of 13. The restaurant was clean, cute, and beautifully decorated, and the upstairs bar area was gorgeous. The bartender was also extremely friendly and provided excellent service. Unfortunately, the brunch experience was very disappointing. Our table was in a tight area near the kitchen, and the music was so loud that it was difficult to hear one another. The food service was extremely disorganized. Some guests never received their meals, while others received meals they didn't order. As the birthday girl, I had to intervene when an argument developed between the waitress and one of my guests over a bowl of potatoes. The waitress insisted my guest had already received them, but she had not. My guest was so hungry from waiting that she eventually began eating from another guest's plate. Honestly, who's going to lie about not receiving a bowl of potatoes during a Saturday brunch? My own omelette was not tasty, and I did not care for the white sauce, although the potatoes were good. The mimosas were good as well, except for the hibiscus flavor. We spent over $800 for our party of 13, yet several guests left without receiving their correct meals. We ultimately went next door to Matchbox so everyone could eat and continue the birthday celebration. I want to acknowledge the beautiful atmosphere and excellent bartender, but the overall service and organization were disappointing. Spending over $800 and leaving with hungry guests and incorrect or missing orders is unacceptable. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves how large parties are handled.

What a great place to dine. This was my first time at this location in SE. The first time I tried Ambar was at the Shaw location. Either way, they never disappoint. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the hostess. She was very friendly and accommodating. We weren't sure if we wanted to sit outside or dine inside. She was very patient with us. After 5 min she took us to our seat where we were greeted by our waitress. She was very nice as well. She explained the menu which was the Ambar experience and she gave us some time to decide what we wanted to order first. She was very attentive and checked on our table very frequently which we enjoyed. The servers bringing us our food were very kind and quick with removing dishes and serving us. The food was great. Like I mentioned earlier we chose to do the Ambar experience so we were able to choose any food item on the menu. We also ordered the bottomless drinks which were amazing. We both ordered the mango habanero mimosa which was delicious. It wasn't too spicy or sweet. It had a good balance. For food we ordered a plethora of items. My favorite food item was the lamb kabob. It was very well seasoned and cooked to perfection. All of their food was very tasty. It was a great experience overall. I really enjoyed the service and the ambiance. I suggest you check out Ambar if you are in the area. Cheers!

Very nice inside and outside. I had grits only because I wouldn't be able to enjoy all the choices on the brunch menu - I'll prepare by not eating a before going. Anyway John loved the Olivier the best and many other things. Hanger steak with Chimichurri was excellent. It's such a great way to taste all the great dishes! I asked to have my grits reheated as they were served warm. They kindly accepted my request and sent me a new bowl pipping hot! A lovely dining experience , I hope you can come sometime soon!!

I came here with my friends for bottomless brunch and drinks. My favorite was the Hangar steak and the shrimp and grits. I appreciate the bottomless drinks having more than mimosas and also different flavors. I liked the mango hibiscus mimosa and sangria. The service was good although some of the food took a while to come but it comes on a rolling basis so there's always food on the table. The ambiance is cute and perfect for a brunch date!

Came here saturday for lunch and really enjoyed my time. The food was good but idk if it was busy or what but I felt like they were a bit delayed in bringing our small plates over. The food was impeccable though and our server was nice!

We had an enjoyable experience. The all-you-can-eat small plate style is great for sharing with friends or family and trying a lot of different dishes. The food was overall tasty, especially the dips -- we all really enjoyed the beet dip, and I liked the fresh citrus balance in some of the spreads. The medium rare steak was also cooked well. Some other dishes like the shrimp and grits, sliders, and mac & cheese were more underwhelming and a little lacking in flavor. But overall a solid spot for to come with a group and a good way to try a variety of Balkan-inspired dishes.

Went out with some friends to have brunch in DC and people say Ambar is one of the best. Their brunch has unlimited small plates served tapas style and unlimited mimosa as well. We tried our best to order every single item but got super stuffed. They offer a wide variety ranging from traditional American to Balkan inspired dishes. The food was pretty decent but there are definitely hits and misses here. I would probably avoid the mac and cheese (very bland and dry) and the Balkano (pork was also very dry). However, some of my favorite dishes were the kebabs, steak, meat pies and Balkan donuts! Pairing all this with quick and good service, I can see why this has become a popular brunch spot amongst locals. Small Plates: Pulled Pork Benedict, Salmon Benedict, Balkan Kebab, Balkano Slider, Mushroom Pilav, Hanger Steak, Fried Chicken Slider, Beet Tzatziki, Meat Pie, Sujuk Flatbread, Shakshuka, White Flatbread, Waffles and Balkan Donuts

Our company division recently hosted a team offsite in the DMV area, and to encourage us to meet new colleagues, we were placed into small groups of 10-12 people where a local colleague selected a restaurant for the group. I chose Ambar for my group, and I'm very pleased with our selection. Food Most of our group had dietary restrictions. Several of us were gluten free, and one person was both nut and seafood free. Ambar did an excellent job curating a menu that worked for everyone without making anyone feel like an afterthought. We opted for the Chef's Table experience, which included a spread tasting with veggie sticks and a variety of dishes that were clearly labeled and thoughtfully prepared: * Bean hummus - GF / DF / NF * Ajvar - GF / DF / NF * Balkan salad - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without feta cheese) * Baby carrots - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without tofu sauce) * Roasted peppers - GF / DF / NF * Cauliflower - GF / DF / NF * Baked beans - GF / DF / NF * Roasted lamb - GF / DF / NF * Stuffed pork belly "Sarma" - GF / DF / NF * Brussels sprouts - GF / DF / NF (one prepared without yogurt and bacon) * Seafood platter Everything was flavorful, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. The meal was so delicious that I didn't even manage to get photos of everything, which rarely happens for me. Just know we dined very well and left completely satisfied. Service The staff was wonderful from start to finish. From the event team member who served as our account manager, to the chef, to the servers and wait staff, everyone was attentive and accommodating. They handled our dietary needs with care and professionalism and made sure our group felt taken care of throughout the evening. Pricing We paid a set fee that we were able to negotiate, and the final rate wasn't too bad for a group experience like this. Just keep in mind that there is an admin fee, a 20% gratuity, and taxes added on top, so be sure to factor that into your planning if you're booking a group event. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend Ambar for group dining, especially if you have guests with dietary restrictions. They made coordination easy, delivered great food, and created a memorable dining experience for our team.

I always have a great experience at ambar. I have been to all the local locations. I find that the capital hill location has the best food comparative to the others. We did try their new premium unlimited that includes a fish, tuna tartare, scallops, lamb chops and steak. The premium upgrade is very worth it. The scallops and lamb were the table favorites of the night.

We read the reviews and trusted Yelpers and were not disappointed....I had never had Balkan Food and was curious about the menu and its unlimited offer.....we chose to order 3 dishes instead and it was perfect for two people and a lot less $....though myself and my daughter aren't huge eaters, pretty normal ones. We got the beef pie, vitamin salad, and moussaka and all were excellent! They should change the name on the salad though as its cold and crunchy and was delicious, not a vitamin in the bowl! hahaha The beef pie was different too and instead of a lump of meat/potatoes it was a crispy pastry and the meat was distributed throughout it.....very cool. Their yogurt sauce was excellent too and because we were splitting, they cut everything in half without us asking.....much appreciated! We had good service and nice staff the whole time too :)

Valentine's day, we didn't have a reservation, but we were seated outside. There was a little heater in there, made it comfortable. Service was a little slow, but we ordered so many things at one time so we didn't have to keep waiting. Food was alright. Enjoyed my company. Street parking

Brunch at Ambar is unforgettable! The endless tapas styled plates is the way to go as it offers a way to sample the entire menu without overstuffing yourself. And they offer lunch and dinner in the unlimited forms as well, so you not just constricted to the brunch times for the endless options for 2 hours at a time. The venue is spacious with seating available upstairs and downstairs. They even offered mocktails that were not listed on the menu as the server was willing to be very accommodating to our group. The meats were tender, the waffles were soft, the flatbreads were perfectly size, the meat pie was airy, and the donuts were soft. Everything about the experience was immaculate! I would return time and time again.

After hearing all of the hype, we came here for the $36.99 weekend brunch buffet. The place was packed as expected, so much so that we ended up with bar seating despite having reservations. The restaurant itself has a casual vibe with a touch of upscale. The first round of food, chosen by the waiter, included all the highlights to start with. They were the showstoppers! We especially loved the sampler spread, Balkan kebab, and cheese pie. For the second round, we ordered on our own, but the dishes were just average. The steak was a bit chewy, and the shrimp and grits had only one shrimp and very little flavor. Where the brunch really fell short was dessert. The waffle tasted like it came straight from the freezer and was disappointingly soggy. Overall, the meal started strong but lost momentum. Great for a visit to try Balkan cuisine!

Is the time limit enforced? I know it's two hours but is it enforced?

Two hours

What's it like for vegetarians do to the all you can eat option? Are there enough options? Flavorful?

There are plenty of vegetarian options on the unlimited menu. Everything is delicious. The menu is easily found on their website.

Do yall still offer bottomless drinks for lunch or dinner?

Definitely for dinner! Their lunch menu does not mention this option, though. But, the brunch menu does. So, yes to brunch and dinner, but no apparently for lunch.

Is there an option to do bottomless drinks and not bottomless food (for brunch)?

Hello Sophia, I’m sorry to inform you that unfortunately we do not offer bottomless drinks alone for…

Any vegan options? I saw vegetables listed in the menu but listed dishes that contain bacon or dairy.

Yes, they have an allergy menu which lists vegan options!

Do you different pricing for younger children?

I don't believe they do and I wouldn't take younger children to Ambar. I don't think it's a appropriate place for them.

Are there outdoor heaters on the patio?

I was there not to long ago and don't remember seeing any, I would suggest eating inside as it's a beautiful restaurant.

Is their outdoor patio heated?

They do have outdoor heated lamps...

Is there a dress code?

There isn't a dress code. I have seen some people who chose to dress up and those who choose to be more casual.

Is restaurant serving bottomless brunch on weekends?

Yes

Is there an option to do the bottomless brunch without the bottomless drinks?

Yep! And the servers are really easy about it.

What is the dinner cost for underage young adults who can not drink? Is dessert included? How many items can you order at one time?

Dinner is $45 when you do not include the drinks. Just tell the waiter and they are pretty accommodating for not adding drinks. Dessert is a separate platter that can be added for an additional charge. And you can really order as many items as you…

What is the wait time for brunch without reservation?

It can be up to 40 min. Grab a seat at the bar if there's room.

Are there vegan options on the dinner menu?

There are vegan options, but you might be frustrated with the lack of options if you do the "ambar experience". The menu is heavy on meat so you might be limited to side vegetable dishes.

Bottomless mimosas only on weekends?

Yes! Brunch (that comes with bottomless mimosas) is only on Saturday and Sunday.

I visited here long ago for brunch, which lived in my mind rent free, and I finally had a chance to come back. We stopped in for some bites before a baseball game at national Park. We shared the escargot, lamb kofta potstickers, crispy mushroom Arancini, and cauliflower. The cauliflower was so delicious and savory, definitely with Middle Eastern influences, and I could've eaten a whole bowl of it. I thought the lamb kofta dumplings were pretty interesting--I haven't ever had anything like it before, and they did a good job of allowing the flavor of the lamb to shine through without being overly gave me. The crispy mushroom Arancini was quite good, though I'm admittedly quite small. The escargot was very well seasoned, with that perfect garlicky sauce, though they're not anything new. That thoughtfulness is one of the many reasons I was excited to try it. When we arrived, I was initially concerned after learning that the "G" on the menu indicated dishes **containing** gluten rather than being gluten-free. Since many menu items were marked with a "G," I worried my options would be very limited, especially for the unlimited brunch experience. Thankfully, our server, Emma, immediately put me at ease. She brought me the food allergy menu, answered my questions with patience, and made sure I understood what was safe for me to enjoy. While my husband and I were deciding whether to stay, the manager, Antonio, came to our table after Emma shared my dietary concerns. His kindness completely changed the experience. He took the time to explain my options, offered to have the kitchen modify several dishes, and reassured me that their goal was for me to feel safe and enjoy my meal. Thanks to Emma and Antonio, what started with uncertainty became one of the most enjoyable brunch experiences I've had. I was able to enjoy a variety of delicious dishes, the mimosas were a great value, and the restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, with floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with natural light. What I'll remember most, though, is how genuinely cared for I felt. Before we left, Antonio stopped by one last time to make sure I was happy with my meal and that all of my needs had been met. My husband had put so much love and intention into choosing this restaurant, and thanks to Emma and Antonio, we both left with happy hearts and full bellies. If you have food intolerances or dietary restrictions, I hope this review gives you confidence to visit Ambar. Their team didn't just accommodate my needs. They made me feel welcome, respected, and cared for. That's the kind of hospitality that earns five stars from me.

All the appetizers were excellent. The patè was presented nicely with accoutrements of fig jam, cornichon, macerated tomatoes and bread. The mussels were offered in a Thai curry sauce but we asked for another serving option due to an allergy concerns. They offered us a white wine and garlic option and we gladly took it. It was crispy, tender, flavorful with zero greasiness. The garlic tomato aioli accompanied the dish well. We shared the beef medallions as our entree and a side of fries because I spotted a server carrying fish and chips and the steak fries style potatoes were speaking to me. The amuse bouche was a tiny BLT and a small glass of clarified gazpacho- never heard of that, but the liquid was clear with tiny bits of red and green peppers and was so flavorful! The first course was yellow corn panne cotta with a smear of jumbo lump crab - oh, wow! Almost my favorite course. My favorite was rockfish ravioli in a basil and clam broth - could have eaten way more than the three of those if it was a main, but they were generously sized!!! The third course, Chicken Ballantine, Summer Vegetables, Natural Jus, was a little strange - there was a small medallion of chicken breast that was, I think, ground and under cooked - spongy, wrapped in some veg, maybe bok choy?, and then wrapped in dried-ish chicken skin. A little like a sushi presentation, but cooked. It was accented by a tiny fried piece of chicken breast. That fried bit is all I ate. Dessert was divine - a peach that was really a construction of white chocolate, sponge cake inside and peach butter - nestled on meringue and other yummy things like a tiny scoop of peach sorbet - and a companion sorbet in a fruit liquid. By that time, my taste buds were so overwhelmed by deliciousness, I had to get dessert to go (sans sorbet). I had it for breakfast- what a treat!! Overall, a wonderful experience - only a couple of odd things - since we were 10, we asked for separate checks by couples - the server grumbled and complained about something about having to override their system from the time we asked for that until the time we paid the check. A few couples had to go to the bar to pay the check, until she was able to do a work around to let the last of us pay...after waiting for some sort of fix...and more grumbling. And, while I really appreciate that they provided small stands for our purses next to our chairs, I tripped over them while using the ladies, and getting seated on return when the sweet staff ran to follow us back in the room and tried to pull our chairs for reseating. We left with a sweet basket of a little brioche bread with lovely plum jam for each of us. So special!! I can't wait to go back - maybe for lunch time. Such a memorable experience!!
