I come here for two things the food and the angry servers. The sushi always hits, and the black truffle hamachi.... Fire. This is our favorite sushi spot, and part of the reason I like coming here is because it feels like a real dinner. I get to be off my phone, talk to my girlfriend, ask her about her day, and just enjoy the food. But today I walked in and they hit us with the "scan the barcode" menu,....  okay. So we scan the barcode and honestly, I immediately felt less hungry. Talk about a diva, right? But something about sitting down at a sushi restaurant and having to stare at my phone changed the frequency... Part of the fun is holding an actual menu, pretending I know what half the stuff means, and ordering something that sounds good without having to scroll like I'm online shopping. So I asked for a regular menu. Aaannddd They brought one out, but it was a filthy 8.5 x 11 stack of stapled sheets. Now I'm even less hungry.I don't know. Loved it! Came here with my dog and we were seated promptly. Dog friendly and truly appreciate that. To drink, I ordered a cloudy sake ($18), which was just OK. I would not have that again. To eat: 1. Truffle hamachi (6 pcs) - amazing! Absolutely getting it next time. 2. A5 Wagyu nigiri (1 pc, $15) - it was okay. Not my fave Wagyu I've had. This one was more raw. This place is chaotic in the most endearing way. The service often leaves a lot to be desired, but I keep coming back and will likely continue to for the foreseeable future. Even with its quirks it's still the best sushi spot in town, and I worked at another Napa sushi restaurant for the better part of 7 years. It feels like one of the only restaurants in Napa that legitimately cares about catering to locals. The prices are fair. Good sake selection. The quality of the sushi is fantastic and they cycle in unique fish I've never had anywhere else. Tip to the owners: hire more servers!! Also it would be appreciated for them to get their face out of the mobile POS and really listen to the customer when they're taking our order. read more

Came here last minute and was a little disappointed. This restaurant is one of the places that only has a digits QR code instead of a regular menu. There were a lot of specials on the menu and a lot of options. However, the rolls seem limited and very similar. The food we ordered wasn't bad but it wasn't great, it almost seemed that it was overly fresh/cold so a lot of the fish did not have a lot of flavor. The roll also took a very long time for us and what looked like for other tables. The service was confusing, the entire time I was not clear if we had one waitress or if everyone could take the order. Multiple people came by at first to take our order then disappeared. I've dined at Amami Sushi twice now--once at the counter and once at a table. The food is good, and the service is friendly and quick. I've tried a few different rolls, some hand rolls, and the Hokkaido Don. Everything came out fast and tasted great. The prices are fair, and there's plenty of seating. read more

Really sad to see how much this place is declining. It's been a measurably worse experience every time we come in (about once or twice a month). What started as the sushi joint this town needed, with possibly the best front-of-house manager we've ever seen, who literally held the place together at the time, has become a place where we're greeted at the door with nothing more than a gesture toward the dining room to find our own seats. Then we're handed a disgustingly dirty stack of stapled papers that now serves as the menu. Just a couple of months ago they had nice laminated menu folders. Staring at a brown-stained, low-ink printed sheet of paper does not make you crave raw fish... or anything else for that matter. Why on earth would they think this is a good idea? We never really know who our server is anymore, and when one finally came over, he had clearly just come back from smoking outside and absolutely reeked of cigarettes. Again, not exactly an appetizing way to start a sushi date. A quick note: we showed up about 30 minutes after opening, so the staff needing a cigarette break that soon after opening for lunch seemed a little questionable. We ordered, and thankfully the quality of the fish is still top notch, as it has always been. The only change there is that the portions of sashimi and nigiri have shrunk by about 30%. While waiting for our food, the same server took another table's order while half-sitting on the empty table behind him. I doubt the people who eventually sat there would have appreciated knowing that someone's backside had been resting where their food would soon be served. With the new AUCE restaurant in town showing a lot of promise and serving good-quality food (maybe not quite the same selection or quality, but good nonetheless), I would expect a restaurant trying to position itself above that level to offer better service and menus that don't look like they were left next to a urinal before being brought back into the dining room. Seriously disappointing. What a quick fall. We'll probably give it one or two more chances, especially since I'm seeing similar comments here on Yelp, but after that we may have to start looking elsewhere again. To think we have recommended this place to a lot of people who might now question our taste in restaurants is not great... I genuinely hope management sees reviews like this and makes some changes, because they're heading in the wrong direction very quickly. read more

How is it that the best sushi of my life is in Napa? Sidenote: I haven't been to Japan so perhaps there is my dream sushi over there but in the meantime I plan on enjoying Amami whenever I am in Napa. It is absolutely excellent. The winery next door (they share a bathroom) suggested it to me, and while I wasn't planning on sampling sushi in Napa I decided to give it a try. I've been twice now and have been blown away each time. To start, the service is fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable, and super attentive. The price point is decent, and I was able to get a considerable amount of sushi for under $100. The ambiance is lovely, though I typically just sit at the sushi bar. I highly suggest getting one of the sushi samplers--like the sashimi and nigiri--so that you can get as many samples of the fresh, delicious sushi as possible. And, the best advice I can ever give anyone is if you see "Chef's Special" and the description says it's up to the chef to make you something? DO IT. Both times it's been the same roll but it's absolutely incredible. Waygu beef tartare with smoked salmon caviar atop a crisped rice. It's to die for. Every bite is so fresh, so delicious, and so lovingly made. Do not miss this amazing little sushi spot tucked away on one of downtown's side streets! read more

Great sushi at great prices! Came here for dinner with a coworker on a Tuesday evening. It was pretty packed for a random rainy Tuesday. Parking can be found in the general vicinity. We found street parking a block away. The restaurant itself holds a good amount of people and there is both bar and table seatings. I had the 10 piece omakase nigiri set. Unfortunately, they didn't explain what was on there, but let me just say, everything was delicious. I know for sure there was at least a piece of toro and a wagyu with wasabi. Both were probably my favorite. The rest of the nigiri were really good as well. Some had sauces while others just had wasabi on it. Overall, I think Amamis is a great place for sushi! My experience at this spot was disappointing. I won't even comment on the food, because if the customer service is this poor, it overshadows everything else and makes it difficult to enjoy the food. After a long wait, once we were finally seated, it quickly became clear that our waiter was attentive to every surrounding table, except ours. After another 20 minutes with no acknowledgment, we had to get up and ask someone to take our order. What made the experience worse was that once we finally ordered, we noticed one of our plates sitting at the counter for quite some time before it was brought over. When our food eventually arrived, it was dropped off hurriedly without giving us a chance to request anything. At one point, we were trying to ask for forks (since they hadn't been provided), but the waiter brushed us off, telling us to wait, even though the forks were right next to them. We had to ask multiple times, and only after showing frustration did another staff member finally hand us utensils. We had also ordered another drink and some additional food, which never arrived. Meanwhile, it was hard not to notice the waiter had time to check on nearby tables, and even make small talk with the table next to us. At that point, we decided to stop waiting, asked for the bill, and left. The service felt dismissive to the point that it was hard not to take it personally. Because of this, we would not return, and it's something others should keep in mind. To the manager's credit, they were at least respectful when we brought up our concerns. Overall, the lack of basic courtesy, attentiveness, and professionalism made this an extremely disappointing experience. read more

Came by without a reservation for dinner on a Saturday and were lucky to be seated immediately despite it being quite busy. Despite the number of customers, it's quite spacious and upscale inside, with dim mood lighting. We ordered a hamachi collar and 4 rolls to share, which was just enough for us to be full. The fish was fresh, but some of the sauces and flavors didn't really seem to match the fish. The hamachi collar was excellent, and I would definitely get that again. For the price, it's not the best sushi you can get, but definitely a solid spot for the area with some good quality rolls that would be nice for a special treat or night out. Went to amami with a friend after several recommendations and it totally delivered! Was told the prices were better the Eikos so wanted to give it a shot. Paid $100 for 4 rolls, miso, gyoza, and yakatori, which was totally reasonable. The veggie tempura and mango crunch roll were a little sweet, but still good (would likely skip mango next time). While scrolling through Yelp where to have dinner in Napa, after learning that one of my favorite restaurants that I had chosen was closed that evening for a private party, I saw Amami Sushi and remembered that Chef Alan had opened a forth location here after his others located in San Bruno and South San Francisco. Only a short drive from where we were staying, we arrived at 6:30 pm on a Thursday evening where we were seated at a four top table adjacent to the sushi bar. Unlike his other 3 locations which are in older buildings where the interior dining area is not as modern, the Napa location is different. A clean, sleek and modern interior greets one who enters located on the corner lot shared by another business. Looking at the menu, we ended up ordering Karage and a Dynamite roll followed by a teriyaki salmon dinner and Hokkaido Don. Karage was fully cooked and very good however wish the outer skin would have been slightly kore brown. A slight hiccup occurred when I had requested my salmon be cooked rare and it came out Medium in which I politely returned it only to learn from the server that the kitchen had again cooked it again as Medium. At this point, my wife had already finished her entree as considerable time had passed before learning of the 2nd miscue. No worries as I decided to order the same entree as my wife and like hers the selected cuts of fish over the rice were very fresh and I especially like the dab of Uni over the fish. Ended up receiving a complimentary glass of wine afterwards and would still return here for my next visit. Just like his other locations they are only open for lunch and close for several hours before serving dinner starting at 5 pm. Prices aren't too bad and service is good. The chicken karaage was easily the best item we ordered! It came with spicy mayo and had crispy pieces of juicy dark meat. However, the sushi wasn't impressive. Everything seemed fishy even the lion king roll that was baked seemed fishy, but the toro scallion maki I couldn't eat more than one piece. A nice, little trendy spot in beautiful downtown Napa. We were the first to arrive shortly after they opened. Good thing, too, because this place filled up fast! Awesome Japanese restaurant with incredible sushi!! The service is so nice, everyone is so friendly~ we loved it so much we ate there two nights in a row! It's really nicely spaced out so you don't feel cramped or on top of other customers, and the servers are all really working hard. The chicken karaage, the tempura, the sushi, is ALL delicious!!! The fish is crazy fresh!! The ginger pork rice bowl is something special~ perfectly seasoned, perfectly thin sliced pork you barely have to chew, with perfectly cooked onions, OMG this dish should be highlighted on the menu!! This is such a hard review to write because Amami Sushi was highly recommended to us on our Napa Trip. This is a newly opened sushi bar that doesn't not charge a corkage fee, which adds to the Napa allure. We came here after wine tasting and walking around downtown Napa. We ordered two appetizers and two rolls. For appetizers, we got edamame and chicken karaage. Edamame were slightly overcooked because the shells were slight mushy which cause them to peel instead the beans coming out. The chicken karaage was raw on the inside (bloody raw) so we sent it back to the kitchen. They recooked it and the karaage was not that much better because it was still not cooked all the way through. The reason that I took off 2 stars for the karaage is not only was it not cooked but the waitress was rude and did not even apologize. The sushi rolls that we got were actually good and reasonably sized. We got the Amami Special and Polar Bear. The rolls had plenty of meat in the inside and big enough for us to share. read more

Only complaint was relatively slow service, but it was packed for a Tuesday and they only had 1 server. She was nice enough to take the beer off the bill which was considerate. I tried them out when they first opened and didn't have the best experience. Wasn't planning on going back but my friends invited me to join them tonight, and wanted to at least give them a second chance. Big mistake. What a horrible dining experience. Not what I expect from Napa Valley at 6pm on a Friday night. We never knew who our server was, as every contact was with a different person. When we sat down at our table it was FREEZING. We sat there for at least 10 minutes before our server showed up. The lamp above our table was literally swinging from the air conditioning blowing at the table. We asked the server to lower it, he said he would. Less than 5 minutes later it was at full force again. We asked a the next server who came to our table to lower it, same thing happened. Asked a third time and it never changed. It felt like they were literally trying to make us leave, it was so cold. We ordered a hot sake (because it was so damn cold), tempura and a roll each. When the sake came the server did not pour it for us which I thought was strange. When the tempura came my friend asked for a separate dipping sauce which took forever to come. Their two rolls came almost immediately. I ordered the Lion King and it showed up almost 20 minutes after their rolls showed up.I understand that a cooked roll takes longer, but 20 minutes? Come on. No apology for the delay. My roll literally fell apart when I tried to pick up a piece. Just not acceptable. Not once did anyone come and check on us to see how things were. I wish I could give them 0 stars. Will not go back there and will stick with my tried and true, Eikos. read more

I wanted to like this place because it has potential, but it fell short in too many areas. The tempura was good -- light and crisp -- and the draft beer was honestly the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The sushi rice was disappointing. It wasn't properly seasoned and seemed poorly cooked, which is a major issue for a sushi restaurant. The fish quality also felt low for the price point. I watched the cook open bags of frozen takoyaki before frying them, and the yakitori was deep-fried first and then finished on the grill. There were too many visible shortcuts and ready-made items for what should be a more thoughtful dining experience. They do mix higher-end ingredients with lower-quality ones, which makes it feel inconsistent rather than intentionally composed. It's frustrating because this place could be much better with more attention to fundamentals and fewer shortcuts. read more

We have literally been standing here an hour and when we told the hostess that we are quite hungry and what's the hold up she basically said there was nothing she could do. We are staring at 3 open 4 tops. All they have to do is turn 3 of the 2 tops sideways and wella, we can order and eat. It just shows a complete lack of concern for the customer experience. I went here with my family right before my graduation, and I was far from disappointed. Everything was absolutely delicious, from the gyoza to the various rolls we got. I will say, they forgot the spicy mayo for the squid karaage and we ordered a plate of tonkatsu that never arrived, but considering how busy it was, how much stuff we ordered and how delicious everything else was, I can't complain too much. This Japanese restaurant is simply the ceiling of cost-effectiveness! The service is also super considerate, the staff is warm and thoughtful, and they are available at any time. The point is that the price is affordable beyond imagination, it is a treasure Japanese restaurant, It is no exaggeration to say that this is the most cost-effective Japanese restaurant I have ever eaten! First of all, I praise the ingredients, each one is so fresh that it seems to have its own "freshness". The fish in the nigiri sushi is fresh and chewy, and the rice is soft, sweet and fragrant, which is just the right combination; the beef in the sukiyaki pot is of extremely high quality, dipped in the sweet soup and coated with sterilized egg liquid, the taste is tender and smooth.
