This is by far, the worst food experience I've ever had. I wanna start off by saying the staff were good. My complaint is just on the food. My friends and I did the omakase, thinking that since the name is Morimoto that the quality would be good. It wasn't. Every dish was oily. The fish was warm. There was too much sauce. The halibut was so dry. The wagyu was also dry despite being red inside. The sauce with the wagyu dish tasted sour, like.. something was expired sour. Not good. The dessert had no flavor. The only thing that tasted good was the palette cleanser with the nigiri. This is way overpriced for the quality of food we received. I would never come back here again, nor would recommend this place to anyone. If this was based on the food alone, it would've been 1 star. The staff gave it 2 stars. Finally made it to Morimoto Napa! I had been trying to make it to the Hawaii location forever, so I decided my birthday was the perfect excuse to finally experience Morimoto--and I'm glad I did! The restaurant has a great vibe, the food was beautifully presented, and everything we tried was delicious. It definitely felt like a fun place to celebrate my birthday and check another restaurant off my foodie bucket list. So why only 4 stars? They didn't have the barracuda! That was one of the things I was MOST excited for, so I was definitely a little disappointed. Apparently, the barracuda and I are just not meant to meet yet. Came here for an early dinner and sat outside. Staff is always so attentive and friendly. This is definitely more of a fusion/modern Japanese restaurant so I usually go for their fusion items. I love their yuzu butter oysters and sticky ribs! The sticky ribs are cooked in oil so it has a nice crispy texture and the sauce is not too sweet. I always love their duck confit fried rice and if you put the leftover yuzu butter from the oysters in the fried rice it is amazing! One of my pet peeves is when your food gets prepared at the table, and also when the plates are too hot to touch. This one took about 2-3 mins of mixing on the servers part and I burnt my arm by brushing it on the bowl. The cauliflower on the other had was wonderful. read more

My most recent order was extremely disappointing. The Mapo Ramen had no meat at all and the portion was practically half of what I would expect. For the price, the quality and portion just aren't what they used to be. For a restaurant that is considered fine dining and has built its reputation around high-quality food and an elevated experience, the decline I've personally seen is really sad. What used to be consistently great quality doesn't feel that way anymore. I've also heard similar complaints from other people, which makes me concerned that this isn't just an isolated experience. I genuinely hope management takes this feedback seriously, because restaurants can lose loyal customers very quickly when the quality and portions start declining while prices remain high. I would hate to see Morimoto go down the same path as other restaurants that have struggled or ended up closing because they stopped maintaining the quality that originally brought people in. I've always enjoyed ordering from Morimoto, which is why it's frustrating to see the changes. Unfortunately, after this order, I don't think I'll be ordering here again. I hope this feedback is genuinely taken into consideration. I'd love to see Morimoto get back to the level of quality it used to have, because it's disappointing to watch a place that was once a favorite decline like this. read more

Offerings that were particularly outstanding - Aburi nigiri - a must order. The dashi of the chawanmushi was made from the claws of dungeness crab and you could tell every bit was very ocean forward. The hustle and bustle of dates, business deals, and Napa on a Friday night makes a buzz around your table turning what seems like a loud atmosphere right back into a private conversation. I have been here more than my fair share of times and everything was on point per usual. We had miso soups, , tuna wonton tacos, duck fried rice, and miso black cod. All were delightful. We sipped on green tea and imported beers as each course came and did not disappoint. Our glasses and the table was never empty, everything was yummy. Morimoto is on my "go to" list every time I go to Napa as I can usually count on some great sushi, and tasty drinks but the service here is hit or miss. Usually I give the service a pass as long as we get what we want but on this visit, the service was really off. Our server came over once to take our order, and the rest of the night we were flagging down anyone we could to get more water, tell someone an order didn't show up, to try to get another drink. What the heck? At one point a manager came over and we said we were having trouble getting what we needed but even though he sent the guy over with water, we continued to search for our server. The sushi is still good, the ambiance continues to be loud, and we had a great seat by the windows, but my friends were disappointed and I felt bad as I was the one who recommended the place. This restaurant looks very confused. Based on the menu and the decor, it feels like its trying to be a more upscale restaurant, but how much seating it has makes it feel more like a diner. As such, it was extremely noisy and you could see that couples on dates had a hard time even talking to one another, and eventually just stopped. I could barely hear my wife talking next to me. Most of the servers would even have to lean in to hear the orders. As for the food, nothing really stood out. We ordered a large variety as we were a group of 10 eating family style and nothing really stood out. The quality of the food I would say was akin to fast food or mall food court level, but you're paying 3 times as much. The price belied the food quality. For example, 3 small pieces of ribs as an appetizer for more than $30, I'd expect it to be uniquely spiced, flavorful and juicy, but it was rather dry and tasted as like sauce from Panda Express. Their Wagyu beef carpaccio had too many strong flavors so the taste of the beef itself was lost. Heck, it didn't even really have the notable creamy-like texture that wagyu was supposed to have either (likely a lower grade of wagyu, probably somewhere between USDA Choice and Prime). A lot of their items feel gimmicky too: the unagi clay pot came with some seaweed, a seaweed holder, and two small bottles of sauces. The sauces were bland and contributed nothing to the dish. Making your own "hand rolls" with the seaweed did nothing for this dish other than get your hands dirty. I've watched enough Iron Chef back in the day to understand that this is very Morimoto, as he tries to make the dishes fun. The unagi itself was quite nice, though it might be my personal bias. The Halibut we got was overcooked and dry. Yes halibut is a firmer meat, but man this was hard to eat. The best dish was likely the Ishiyaki Buri Bop, which came with some tables idea theatrics. Nevertheless, for the price, you could do much better at a place like Kunjip Tofu in the bay. Overall, a bad experience. Based on the price point, I thought we'd be getting better food and better ambience, but it was overall mediocre - a blemish on the Morimoto name. read more

Had an ambient dinner for our first meal of our Napa Trip. 5 minute uber from our hotel. The entrance is so artsy and well designed. Feels like someone's home living room area. Took awhile to get seated even tho we had a reservation but got to enjoy the waiting area. The edamame was warm and perfectly cooked. My clam miso soup was full of clam but the soup was salty. The wait to get our sushi orders of the aburi and our chef combo was a very very long wait i think 45 mins to an hour so we decided to order drinks. The fruity drink i was given was nice and refreshing. Friend also got the waygu old fashioned and enjoyed it. Finally got the aburi and they fired two out of the three in front of me. My fav was the A5 japanese waygu melt in ur mouth! The toro was good as well but too much mayo on top. The other two were good too but not warm like im used to getting at other sushi places. Usually they torch and u get it right away for everything. The sushi combo took another 30mins or longer to come out, i saw other tables getting sushi plates before us who arrived later. Not the best feeling. The sushi was alright. I liked our hamachi roll, and there were a few choice pieces i liked like the tuna and some unique pieces. But also pieces that were not good and did not taste fresh. We got the chocolate sphere for dessert which is fun bc they pour flaming vermouth ontop of the chocolate sphere and it melts. It was tasty some parts too vermouth-y and bitter but the middle with the ice cream is very good. Really sad to rate Morimoto so low, but considering the hype surrounding Chef Morimoto, I had higher expectations for this restaurant and my experience here. While I would definitely come back for the food, I think there are quite a few better spots in Napa for special occasions with much better service. We came here for my birthday dinner, and the hosts were lovely enough to move our reservation last minute to a time that worked better for us, which we appreciated. The hostesses were very nice upon our arrival, but I felt like the rest of the wait staff repeatedly dropped the ball when it came to service. They dropped portions of the dishes, forgot utensils/spoons, and were overall not attentive/did not pace the food well, resulting in a 2+ hour dinner and periods where we had too many dishes on our table or no food at all for an awkwardly long time. In terms of the food, every dish was executed perfectly, with the exception of the XO Halibut, since the scallop component of the XO sauce doesn't mesh well with an already fishy halibut. The sushi was incredibly fresh and well-cut, with unique and hard-to-find summer varietals such as barracuda. My favorite dish of the night was probably the white clam miso, which was probably one of the BEST miso soups that I've ever had. read more

Sadly we did not have a great time here. The food was just fine, edible but not super tasty as a consensus all around the table from meat to vegetarian to vegan dishes. I got the vegan ramen and I'm at least glad there was tofu so there was some protein, making it more balanced. Taste wise, it was not notable at all. Some in the group said other Morimoto locations have tasted really good but this one unfortunately disappointed. We had no issues with service. We walked in without a reservation and were seated for dinner as a large group for six after a short wait. There is a notably sized interior as well as outdoor patio seating. For those interested in mocktails, one of us got the lychee yuzu mocktail and enjoyed it. Unfortunately I wouldn't highly recommend or come out of my way to return. I plan to make my way through other restaurants in the vicinity given this was my first time in this area and I was specifically looking for solid vegan options and saw this come up as a recommendation from a blog. There were some other options listed so I will try those next time. Once again, the food wasn't horrible, it just wasn't super tasty unfortunately, and ultimately you want to be eating yummy food when you go out. Overall experience was 2.5/5. For a fine dining experience, Morimoto's fell very short in terms of quality and taste. There was nothing we ordered that was so amazing we would go back for. In fact, the halibut was overcooked and hard/dry, and the edamame seemed undercooked. They also use cheap acryllic chopsticks that melted when we used it on some of their hot/clay pot items. There was no warning from the servers to not use the chopsticks for the hot entrees. The one good things is portions, they gave more food than was expected for some dishes, like the grilled unagi bowl. All the other items we ordered were not bad, but again nothing to write home about. For the amount of money you pay, this was definitely not worth it. Our server was really nice. We ordered two drinks and the Hamachi tartare app and it was very good. On top of the Hamachi we both ordered miso soup and then two rolls. One spider roll and one spicy tuna roll. From the looks of it, the fish at the sushi bar looked fresh and everything was super clean. The service and people here are good. That is why I gave morimoto 2 stars, it is there most redeeming factor. The miso tofu soup is custom is has unique tofu and a lot of seaweed, however I found it overly salty tasting. The Eel and avacado roll tasted like a rock and roll type of sushi you would get at any sushi restaurant, but worse. The sauce was very overpowering and I expected a eel and avocado not the sauce that was put on it, not in the menu either. It did not taste good regardless. The salmon roll was fishy tasting, the salmon looked correct but the Atlantic salty taste was off putting. Proper raw sushi/salmon should have a clean, fatty taste. I don't think the food made me sick and it was not spoiled from a visual look. But the taste is unforgivable for the price paid. Decent food, decent service, and a family style ambiance is how I describe Morimoto Napa. Nanak (who was our host) was a little "reserved" when we were first seated, but he came around in the end. Started with a few appetizers. The seared Gyoza was good, with a nice sauce. The Karage Chicken was amazing, perfectly cooked, flavorful and delicious. The Crab Rangoon is made with imitation crab. I was deeply disappointed. If that were advertised, I wouldn't have ordered it. The Orange Chicken with Bok Choy was good. Crispy, Juicy Chicken with a good orange sauce. The Spicy Basil Rice was very flavorful, but they went overboard with the spice. I asked Nanak to tell them please prepare with less spice so others at the table could enjoy it, but they went in the opposite direction. Finally, the Beef and Broccoli would have been good, if the quality of the beef was a better choice. The meat was chewy, broccoli had a nice texture and the sauce was good. I guess I feel like if I'm paying that much for my food, my table would be wiped down for errant crumbs or whatnot, but maybe you can only do that for white table cloths? I will say that I did appreciate that I never had to ask them to refill my water glass.
