Have lived in Salem for just under 3-1/2 years and have walked by Amadeus many times, finally made it in. The last time we thought we'd just pop in but it was no seating without a reservation, so this time we planned ahead with our Sunday evening reservation. Love how so many of the businesses and restaurants in downtown Salem have kept the feel of these amazing and historic buildings, adding modern touches but keeping the original feel for these classic works of architectural art. Started off with some fantastic Dolmades in a honey drizzle, great contrast in flavors. Had their barrel aged rye manhattan and it was wonderful with Redemption Rye, Carpano Antiqa and a real Amareno cherry. For mains I got the spiced lamb with Israeli couscous and the spices delectably finished the tender cuts of lamb and the creamy texture of the couscous, my GF got the shrimp and bacon risotto and it was so rich with nice flavorful chunks of pork belly. Was not going to do dessert but saw that they had a German Chocolate Cake made with Santiam Brewing's Pirate Stout and so had to get it, the slice was ginormous and filled myself with as many bites as I could, worth using up the remainder of my weekly WW points. Also tried 2 different Oregon ports that went very well with the rich chocolate of the cake. Have to make it back in for their Happy Hour menu, so many great options even when you are trying to eat healthier. read more

tl;dr: fish tacos needed more fish, more ingredients overall - incorrectly portioned. I went for taco crawl, and they weren't serving them yet, so I had the rosemary fries. They were fine, so I came back in the evening for fish tacos. It was their first year participating, so I don't want to be too harsh, but their fish tacos were light on actual fish. They used hardly any vegetables or other filling. It was an absolute joke for $4.50 per taco. I went to Table Five 08 earlier and had 3 excellent avocado tacos for only $5, so I know they can do better. This taco should have been $1 honestly. I'm assuming they couldn't meet demand and simply used fewer pieces per taco to stretch into the evening. Wasn't there at the beginning of the taco crawl, so I can't compare it to the first ones. Regardless, they shouldn't be serving tacos that aren't done properly. I'll go back next year for sure, and I hope it's nicer. If not, there are so many other places to check out. I would try this place again for their fries or other appetizers. Not a fan of ordering drinks at restaurants, so I didn't try any alcohol. read more

We ordered dinner to go last night for our anniversary and couldn't have been more disappointed. Food- My wife ordered the shrimp and bacon risotto. Hardly any flavor, mush. Very small portion size. I ordered the beef stroganoff. The beef was so dry I could barely cut through it and was incredibly overly cooked. Again, flavorless. Portion size-Minuscule. For 48 combined dollars we got two to go containers with a smaller then a Lean Cuisine sized amount of food. Also no soup, salad or bread? Very disappointing. Customer service-The girl who answered the phone both times was very nice and helpful as was the manager who apologized for the food and offered to send us a gift card (which we have yet to receive). At least they owned up to their mistakes which was nice. I'm always willing to give a restaurant a second chance so we will try again but tonight really put a bad taste in my mouth (literally). read more

Good food, bad service. Took at least 10 minutes before anyone even took our drink order. The place was not even busy either and on a Friday night. Several employees were milling around, chatting up tables but not actually taking anyone's order. When someone finally arrived, I made the choice to order everything because when I looked around, all the other tables were not served either. As in, not even water was poured. Had the scallops which were good but not exceptional. This was my second time here and the first time I received good service at the bar. A special occasion ruined. Our party of six was taken up the steps to a baron room that one reviewer described as storage space. There was a table and chairs in the room but no decoration of any kind. When we were seated we asked for cutlery. The waiter put napkins & cutlery in the middle of the table for us to distribute to each other. We ordered cocktails, appetizers and entrees. After about 20 minutes or more, our appetizers arrived two at a time. We told the waiter the cocktails should be served before the 1st course. He replied the restaurant was busy and he had to make the drinks. The appetizer that was described as artichoke hearts with truffles was actually a dip with one little artichoke on top. We asked if there were any specials and the waiter told us there was a steak special topped with blue cheese. Two people ordered this, one without the topping and one with. The dinners arrived two by two, lastly the steaks. Both had a yellow topping. The chef had run out of blue cheese & substituted a sauce without informing us. Five people ordered desert. Each desert was outstanding. We paid, leaving a sizable tip. We didn't ask to see the manager or make a fuss. We did not wish to embarrass the guest of honor who recommended the restaurant because of all favorable reviews. We would rather be turned away when a restaurant s overbooked than receive such shoddy service.We could easily look past the food if we had been treated like valued guests. read more

What a pleasant surprise in downtown Salem! The menu is totally a win and we thought our sever was on it too. My cousin and I met up here during my travels - she picked the place having decided that she thought it was "Yelpy" enough for me. We snagged drinks and checked the menu - I wanted to order #allthethings it all looked amazing. And then? Found out it was happy hour too. Be still my heart and bring us some more Amadeus!! We got the following small plates and made them into dinner: * Petite Tarts- 3 fig and bacon, 3 chevre mousse with tomato jam * Meddi Plate- Amadeus hummus, kalamata olives, marinated artichoke hearts, cucumbers, Israeli feta cheese, peppadoos, warm Naan bread. * Artichoke & Black Truffle Dip- Artichoke hearts, secret cheese blend, black truffle oil. Served with baguette bread. * Le Mac- A blend of four cheeses, cream and penne pasta baked in the oven until golden brown and bubbling topped with chicken apple sausage I really enjoyed them all except the Artichoke dip. It was cold - and I just assumed it would be hot so my expectations were off. The bread was a little tough for me me to accompany a cold dish (had it been hot, they would have served for the perfect base) and we all know truffle oil is bogus. The Le Mac was delicious! But, I will say if they just pre-chopped the sausage when added the look of the dish would be much improved. The taste though is was really matters - and that was spot on. Now - do note that the downtown Salem area could use some revitalization and it can be a bit seedy, but the answer folks? Is to cuddle up in Amadeus and set into a table full of bites. Went here for what I hoped would be a nice dinner with a sister and her husband I hadn't seen in over 4 yrs. Very,very disappointed. We ordered starters, wine, and main plates. The barmaid came out first and I asked for recommendations - she touted a "fabulous pinoit" and a glass for me to try- I indicated it was ok (one buck chuck) and she left to talk to some friends- never did see her helping out others & had a catch a different waitress just to get water and wine glasses for the rest of the table. Starters came out (pretty good- I had the bacon starter) but halfway through our starters the main course showed up ( I guess they've never heard of pacing a meal). The waiter put the plates on the table and hurried off, we exchanged the plates so that we got the proper meal that we had ordered- we were a number- not people. Amadeus was recommended to me by a customer of mine. Actually, he was the kitchen manager and spoke highly of the food and staff. I thought that since he had such wonderful things to say it must be worth trying out. I was surprised at the seasonal menu and loved the dessert menu. I had the Shrimp and Bacon Risotto that was wonderful! My husband had the kobe beef burger and had specific requests regarding seasonings. Needless to say after a little back and forth the burger came out great. His only complaint was the hard Ciabatta it was served on. The waitress was great and atmosphere comfortable. There are two cardinal rules of the restaurant trade: Keep the water glasses full and don't make the guests wait on their cocktails. Amadeus broke them both. I had 'discovered' this place while I was walking to another place one day. I poked my head in to see what it was and grabbed a card. I researched them online and liked their offerings, so last night I had opportunity to sample their fare. As I mentioned above, there are two cardinal rules of the restaurant trade. Water and Cocktails - keep both full! However, Amadeus doesn't follow these rules. We were seated promptly and given menus. Our waiter, Alexander, stopped by to explain the steak of the day. Before he left though we had to ask for water, and we ordered our cocktails and an appetizer (The Brie en Poof). We then sat there chatting for ten minutes waiting for our water and cocktails. We weren't far from the bar, so we could see the bartender NOT making drinks. He would come our from behind the bar and chat with customers then go back and stand around. After about 15 minutes our water and Brie arrived, Still no cocktails. The Brie was wrapped in phyllo dough and baked nicely. The three small pieces of bread were not enough to serve the brie on though. It did have a nice flavor. Our drinks finally arrived and Alexander took our diner order, My partner chose the Jumbo Scallops and I opted for the Painted Hills Brisket. We had finished our appetizer and Alexander brought out a small plate with hummus and colored chips. The hummus was served at room temp as it should be and had a good unique flavor. My partner, having finished his cocktail, flagged Alexander over so he could order another. Alexander put the order in, and again we waited as the bartender did anything but make drinks. Our meals arrived about ten minutes after the drink order was in, and we were halfway through our meals when I flagged Alexander over to ask about my partner's cocktail. He left to check on it and disappeared into the room behind the bar. Another five minutes of watching the bartender do nothing and then he finally made the drink. Oh yeah, we had to ask for a water refill twice during the meal. So onto the food, I mean, that is one of the reasons you are yelping in the first place. My partner reported that the Scallops were rubbery and not cooked properly. His exact words: "The Chef doesn't seem to understand how to pan sear." My Painted Hills Brisket was more painted hills than brisket. When it arrived, I had a hard time finding any bits of brisket. I did eventually locate three small morsels. The reduction and polenta was tasty, but I would have liked more brisket and less hills. Over all my initial impression and expectations were not fulfilled upon patronizing the establishment, Alexander, while friendly and engaging, wasn't very attentive to our needs as diners. The food was overpriced for what was delivered, and the palate was good but not great. Amadeus seems to be trying too hard to impress with appearance and not enough with the food. I believe in second chances, and we will go back again to sample their lunch offerings. But at this time, the only thing we may go there for is a drink we don't mind waiting for. read more

So.....I have been a long time patron of Amadeus. Tonight was by far the worst experience. My dinner partner arrived first and asked for a table but in turn was asked if she had a reservation. She said no but asked if we could still be seated. Then they took a very long time to determine if it was possible. Once at the table she ordered a cocktail but was never offered a chance to order an appetizer while she waited (the rest of the party was unexpectedly delayed). Then the rest of us arrived and noticed that the happy hour time listed on the menu was different then the one online and we had based out plans on the online info. When I asked about it we were told that they were aware the website was not up to date as the time had changed three weeks ago but that they would not honor the times listed on the site. That was fine. We decided to stay and eat since it had been an eventful afternoon. What was not fine was that the service for getting cocktails and food ordered was slow despite arriving before the rush. Then the food arrived out of order - entrees before the salads and appetizers despite the fact the entrees were ordered much later. The final insult was the automatic inclusion of the gratuity to the bill. Gratuity is usually only added for tables of 6 or more per their menu and our party was smaller than that. I politely informed the waitress that had the gratuity not been added her tip would've been larger. My usual minimum tip is better than the gratuity they added to our bill. The food was good but since all our courses arrived at once and our table was never once pre-bused the impression that out business was unwanted was very strong. My dinner companions, who had never been to Amadeus before, stated this would be their last experience there. No use in spending your money where it's not wanted. This is a personal preference sort of thing but, despite great holiday decorations, it felt like we were in a mall atrium. It was very loud so I wouldn't try to come here for an intimate date night. We were so excited to go here! The menu is great and the ambiance is lovely. Service, however, was terrible. I got the bruscetta pizza, which was also pretty bad. The crust was really soft and undercooked, and since the toppings are wet (lots of cheese, tomatoes, and balsamic glaze), it was just a mushy mess. Plus, it was supposed to have pancetta on it, and there ended up being maybe three tiny pieces on the whole pizza. Ick. The server seemed like he had other places he'd rather be. We both would have loved them to take our money and give us another round of beers (we finished our first ones shortly after the main courses came), but one he dropped off the entrees he never bothered to come back until about 10 minutes after we had finished our food. So thirsty! And it's not like he wasn't around, he kept looking at us from across the room, but just didn't feel like providing us any service. The one saving grace was my boyfriend's brisket. It was fantastic and he ate every bite. I'd love to give this place another try if they can get some better servers in there! read more

This place used to be a regular place for my friends and I to have girl time dinner and drinks. The last several times we've been in one of us has gotten unlucky in either a dinner or drink item. The service on our last visit was Meh, we made reservations for 7, I arrived on time. Had to flag someone down a few minutes after I arrived was told the table was being cleaned. Plopped down at the bar was ignored by the bar tender for 5 minutes. Friends arrived, went to our table in the window area front of house. It was cold so we wore our coats the whole time. Bar tender was the waiter... Joy... The same dude who ignored me while I waited at the bar hoping for a drink. He was slammed at the bar he's the only one making drinks and is expected to wait on tables? Drinks arrived presentation of cocktails was sloppy. Think again he's slammed making drinks for the whole place! I ordered a Marionberry lemon drop, The rim was lined in 3-5 inches of sugar it went down the glass! Had to scrap it off. Ordered the risotto, it was akin to a frozen bag of stir fry. Everything had the same salty flavor and color. Not risotto. Felt accosted for ordering my dressing for the salad on the side. I know the house dressing is good people! Calm down. Bar tender brought us an AMAZING dessert. Ice cream and brownie hard to fuck up. But the brownie was perfectly milk chocolate and not too da Also saved the night by bringing us Champagne he heard us talking about friends up coming wedding. So disappointed in this place. I love the hummus they sell at Lifesource so we decided to go for lunch. Our server was nice but only checked on us to get our menu and give us our bill. My friend got a wrap it looked tasty until I she got down to last bite and sticking out was a straight eyelash. I had the poluet poluet which was delicious, moist, and flavorful. Quick: Good food, good ambiance, attentive service. Full story: I had lunch here and ordered the Lamb Sandwich. It was served on a ciabatta roll with greens, feta, and tzatziki sauce. The lamb was well cooked and seasoned, the roll had a crisp crust and nice chewy center. The sauce and feta were a nice compliment to the sandwich. It was served with sweet potato fries; they were ok not the best I've had but certainly not the worst. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice, lots of big artwork, the bar is beautiful, and you can hear everyone at your table during a busy lunch. The price was reasonable at $13 for the lamb sandwich with sweet potato fries. I will definitely be coming again to try the rest of the menu. read more

Out for a quick dinner date with the hubby we decided that "somewhere downtown" was were we would enjoy our two hours of baby-free time. That was about as far as our decision making had gotten us. As we sat in our car now parked "downtown" for a moment contemplating exactly were we should eat, I scanned the closest establishments on Yelp. Amadeus was a solid choice, the menu had a little bit of something that pleased both me and my more meat and potatoes husband. I ordered a brown beer to start with and it arrived with swiftness. Either it was the beer itself that was excellent, or the fact that I had no beer for the past 9 months, but either way - yum. My pesto-alfredo shrimp (sub'd for extra shrimp and no scallops) was nice and creamy, no complaints. My husband's hamburger was "alright" although he said something on it tasted like honey, but wasn't sure what. Service was handled very well between the only two servers working that night, who had the entire restaurant to cover, plus outside seating. Kudos to those two, they worked well as a pair. The tab was a bit pricey, but it went with the overall feel of the slightly upper scale experience. read more

She was super helpful and gave us many tips on the best dishes to get. I ordered the lemon drop which was delicious. We also started with the truffle and artichoke dip. It was strong but flavorful. For dinner I had the Fancy Salad. It was light but tasty. My sister had the shrimp risotto which was AMAZING. It was all things cheesy and creamy. Best risotto I've ever had actually. We LOVED Amadeus and would highly recommend it to anyone in Salem. They have many classic and creative dishes on their menu. Their service is helpful and attentive.
