Food- lasagna was alright to me - a few uncooked noodles (seems a bit firm- to chew) There was no real grated cheese to place over the meal... a store bought, grated cheese to shake over. This was a big disappointment for me. Also the bread stick or so were too dry, no olive oil with balsamic sauce served. An expensive place like this should have real men/women dressed appropriately... looks like they came running into service directly from the street... I will come back and hope to find some improvements - nice surrounding but ... not that impressive. read more

This is exactly the type of thin crust/red sauce restaurant I've been looking for as an east coast transplant. Can't believe I've missed out for the past few years! The restaurant is pretty big and I loved how they managed to create a warm intimate, classic Italian/tavern atmosphere with the wood paneling and latticework. We had a medium pepperoni tavern-style thin crust and a pasta dish tossed with chicken, artichokes, olives and light cream sauce that wasn't too thick/heavy and a couple local Pilsners. We left with plenty of leftovers so I'd say it was a good value considering the overall increase in the prices of seemingly everything nationwide. I noticed some complaints from others about the long wait times but I'd say it's only long-ish, which is relative I think since I enjoy a leisurely experience with nothing rushed. The waitress also gave a heads up about it too so this was a non-issue for this review. Also, come in with the right expectations, because they're not trying to be a particular "artisanal" or wood-fired Italian spot lots of people seek out or expect with hype. This is not a knock against the quality, care, flavor and atmosphere here, just something to help anybody who might not be able to discern a difference between certain styles of Italian cuisine. There were eight of us and our waitress was a delight! Everyone loved their food. We had a variety: ravioli, ravioli & lasagne combo, fettuccine Alfredo, chicken Parmesan, lasagne, and Stromboli. Crisp green salad or soups (minestrone or tortellini) before dinner. Desserts chosen were cannelloni, gelato (pumpkin with Carmel drizzle & whipped cream or raspberry). I've been coming to Geppetto's for years, by myself and with my family. The atmosphere is great and hard to describe. It's something like a 70's Italian restaurant coupled with a quasi-outdoor or villa eating location. Tables and booths make up the seating in two separate seating areas, and there's a bar that also has full service food and drink, along with lottery games. Ever since my children were small (twin boys), I could come here on my own and the staff would treat them like family. They'd eat spaghetti and watch their tablets or color on the playmat, and I could read a book and eat manicotti, or lasagna, or pizza, or whatever. The food is southern Italian and covers the gamut of pastas and whatnot. They offer steak and four different styles of pizza. When I would come here on my own, I'd call ahead and order the deep dish stuffed pizza, which takes about 40-45 minutes to make, and when I arrived, I could sit down with a glass of wine and only a few minutes later, a super stuffed, very hot pizza would arrive. I'm not kidding about the family treatment either; my one son was practically adopted by a young woman who worked here, and for the last five years, he still happily says her name whenever we pass by the place. We arrived one night after a party of about 20, kids after a soccer game or something like that, and when we were seated, our order got put in right away, so that we wouldn't be behind the huge ticket coming in from the team. For my money, the best pizza in Salem is at Geppetto's. My son and I usually split a large pepperoni thin crust pizza, while I'll also go for a piece of the lasagna, which is amazing. My other son loves the spaghetti and meatballs, and my partner (who is Celiac and can't tolerate gluten at all), will usually get a steak with pesto sauce. They keep gluten free pasta on-hand, so my partner is usually accommodated for that too! We also love sharing a dessert of the spumoni. My boys especially enjoyed the pistachio flavor part of it, so, knowing this, once when the bucket was low and was mostly chocolate and vanilla, a new tub was opened up and an extra large portion of pistachio was scooped out for us. Seriously, this place is a killer location, with great food, great atmosphere, and an amazing staff. The front door looks like you're walking into a hidden location and, in a lot of ways, it is. Well, that was an expensive mistake. I just spent over $70 on 2 medium pizzas and 2 tiramisu. I got thin crust. It was supposed to have pepperoni, sausage, pineapple, and onion. All I saw and tasted was pineapple and sausage. Not that it mattered. It was as tasty as a cheap frozen pizza I could get at a grocery store, only I think a grocery store pizza crust is tastier than Geppetto's. The crust was almost stale and totally tasteless. So I stopped eating the pizza and went directly to the tiramisu. Surely, for a home-made dessert for $10, it would be magnificent! It was awful. The lush creamness you expect was not there at all. The ladyfingers had no notes of coffee nor liqueur, and the mascarpone was not creamy nor flavored at all. The whole thing was dreadfully dry. I threw away the pizza and the dessert. You frogs with all of my reviews know that I never do this but, I must tell you honestly, DO NOT COME HERE. Food: I think they should get somebody who is Italian to start making their Italian food. It tastes worse than Italian food made in a New York diner. Service: after about 25 minutes or so, the food finally came to the table and the place was practically empty. After the waiter took the fork from The table from my salad, I had to wait so long for a replacement that I decided to call the restaurant and order a fork and napkins to the table which confused the person who answered the phone; I said I don't know where my waiter is, please bring me some napkins and a fork. I hate to do this but the food is NOT GOOD. PS: I had to call the restaurant from my table to get a spoon when the waiter came and delivered the spoon, I said I just got coffee, how would I start my coffee and he said to me and I "is literally, "ha ha ha, I don't know " One star and no tip. read more

That is where the fairytale ends fortunately. We ordered spaghetti with meat sauce and shrimp fettuccine alfredo. The pasta was so over cooked and mushy . The only thing less appetizing was the sauce. The sauce had no flavor and the texture was as if it was from a can. The shrimp was so over cooked and tasted terrible.
