6 star rating Back to the Future at Grandma's -- Precious Pizza Precious Pizza recently moved across the street into the former location of a long-time classic Salem diner, and the space feels like it was always meant for them. From the moment you walk in, it feels like time travel--in the best possible way. The atmosphere is nostalgic without being forced. There's counter seating like you'd find in classic American diners from decades ago, booths that seat four, and simple tables that make it easy to gather. The walls celebrate Nonnas (grandmas), which tells you exactly what kind of food you're about to eat. There was even an old TV with a built-in VCR playing the animated Hobbit--the kind of detail that instantly brings you back to childhood afternoons at grandma's house. The pizza is outstanding. Square and rectangular grandma-style pizzas that are closest to Detroit or Chicago style, but honestly feel more like the kind some lucky people grew up eating at home. The dough is the foundation and it's exceptional. The crust has deeply caramelized edges--brown to almost black--perfect if you love the crispy corner pieces, while the center stays soft, airy, and pillowy. I was still thinking about the texture more than 7 hours after my last bite. We ordered all four of the main pizzas plus the special of the month. Highlights included the "Papi", a fun and thoughtful twist on Hawaiian , and a combination pie with sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, and bacon. The homemade tomato sauce is rich and well balanced, and the house-made ranch dressing is excellent by any measure. Do not skip the Caesar salad. The Caesar dressing is homemade and absolutely not to be missed--bold, balanced, and clearly made with care, not poured from a bottle. It stands up confidently next to the pizzas and deserves its own mention. The garlic bread knots were phenomenal--comfort food in the purest sense. They tasted like something your mom or grandma would make without thinking twice about it. Owners Alex & Katie happened to be working when our large family of 16 came in to celebrate the holidays. Katie easily combined tables so we could all sit together comfortably, and the entire experience felt welcoming and relaxed--no stress, no rush. The bar menu is surprisingly diverse with well-made cocktails, beer, and wine. Non-drinkers are treated just as well, with excellent non-alcoholic options including handmade Italian sodas with real cream. There's also a projector in the back where you can watch games on YouTubeTV or movies via YouTube Premium, which adds to the hang-out-at-grandma's-house feel. Slices are about $6.50, whole pies around $35, cut into roughly 9-12 thick slices (about 1.5 inches). One slice will fill you up--but you'll want more. If you're looking for pizza that feels like Back to the Future at Grandma's, this is it. When you think of grandma, think of Detroit and Chicago at their best. One of the best pizzas in Salem! I love the cute and cozy aesthetic of the spot. Conveniently located in the middle of downtown Salem. You can tell they care about the quality of food here. They also have a decent sized bar there. Cocktails are a little Pricey, but overall fair. Especially considering the quality. Precious Pizza is as close as Salem has to Ranch Pizza -- and that's a great thing! While the prices are high and the selection limited, the thick-crust Sicilian style makes one slice plenty for a satisfying meal, so the value is deceptively high. Of course, the obvious standout is the ranch -- it's the creamy, buttermilk- and dill-forward sauce style, rather than the Hidden Valley tangy dip style. That's just how I like it! The surprising thing about Precious, and what launches it from a low 4 to a 5-star offering, is the weekly(ish) specials. Featuring a rotation of seasonal ingredients and flavors, these are a great way to bring some variety to your Friday night pizza routine. We've loved P3 Precious Pizza since their pop-up days, and it's so great to have them in a larger location! Their extended menu is exciting, and I'm stoked to see that they have alcohol as well as soft drinks available. Their Caesar salad was one of the most unique versions of that classic salad. And the pizza, damn good! Too many restaurants close early on the weekends, so seeing that they'll be open until 10pm Friday and Saturday is truly awesome for our sleepy town. Go get some. read more
