We ordered the stuffed grape leaves, hummus, and chicken swarma which comes with a green salad. And, baklava, of course! Everything was delicious! Portions were great, pricing is on the high side but worth it. Service is efficient and very hardworking, not overly-friendly but I think this is a cultural thing. It is inside Fork Forty - I suggest avoiding it during peak times because Fork Forty is a bit chaotic and seating is limited. read more

GF and I had a wonderful experience here. Of note the Baklava are beyond description with wicked depth of flavor such that both my GF and I found ourselves giggling while eating them. We got an assortment of different dishes so that we could try several culinary offerings. The dolmas were soooo good. The hummus was creamy and very delicious. I got the chicken shwarma and it was very nicely prepared and I would definitely order it again. The falafel were some of the best I've ever experienced. If I am ever in the area again, I will definitely eat here again and I have found myself going on a slight detour to get their baklava. My fave is the pistachio baklava. I love the sensation of my teeth cutting through the multitude of flavor layers. Please do yourself a favor and eat here if but for the baklava alone which is worth the drive. Fair prices, fair quality, fair menu, great people. Salem is, unfortunately, somewhat starved for good middle eastern food, so Syrian Kitchen scores a bit higher for that -- but it's not without its own merits! The food is consistent, authentic-yet-approachable, mostly fairly-priced, and relatively quick. I'd be happy to eat anything on the menu -- and I HAVE had it all. The portions are on the small side, but the flavors are big and bold. Specifically, they definitely go light on the meat compared to most middle eastern options in Portland/Beaverton/Hillsboro. The menu is rather limited, but in fairness, the kitchen is tiny due to being within a food hall. Despite the relatively small portions, the prices are on-par with other similar restaurants in other towns. All in all, as the only convenient option for middle eastern cuisine in the area, we are lucky to have someone with as much skill as Mariam running the kitchen. I've come here a dozen times and will do so a dozen more. Larger portions (especially of proteins, or else lower prices) and a more diverse menu would easily bump Syrian Kitchen into any best-of-Salem list. read more

We've never tried this place before and the food was great! I got the Kefta with rice and my husband got the beef Shawerma and rice plate. Both were delicious. It's inside Fork Fourty and what a cute place. They have Asian, Italian, Syrian food and an ice cream shop. They also have a nice friendly full service bar in the back. They might seem unobtrusive at the Fork Forty Food Food Hall, but their food is mighty good. You can sit inside or outside. I enjoyed the Aleppo Salad and the Falafel. You will get great food for a good value. Give it a try. read more

I'm a big fan of food halls. It works well for groups and picky eaters. While we were walking around, we found the Syrian Kitchen and I'm glad we did. We ordered the grape leaves as an appetizer. Nothing really amazing or unusual about them, but they were solid. My colleague got the shish tawouk skewer while I got the shawarma and rice plate. The meat on both plates were very moist and tender. The falafel was seasoned very well and went AMAZING with the yogurt garlic sauce. We took our food back to the bar and ordered a couple of beers. The meal was awesome. This was probably one of the better meals I ate in Salem in my recent trips there. I'd head to this place for a quick and easy dinner anytime I'm in town. read more

My wife and I wanted to try out something different here in Salem, so we stopped here at the Syrian Kitchen. It is a food court, but it is a pleasant atmosphere here. We ordered Dolmas, Falafel and hummus with fresh pita bread. Nothing fancy, just a simple order. They have the best falafel and Dolmas I have tasted. The hummus and pita bread was very good too. I ordered a Falafel Pita Sandwich. The falafel was cake like and lightly cooked. It was not the traditional deep brown color. The sandwich was missing tomato's and had too much lettuce. I was other dishes that looked like they would of been a better choice. read more

I don't know if they changed cooks or ran low on ingrediants. The Baba Ganoush was exceptionally bad the last time I ate there. It was a real letdown because the baba ganoush is normally great there. We ordered the lamb shawerma rice plates, the hummus and the baba ghanoush, and pita bread. Everything was delicious. The lamb was very flavorful and tender. Falafel was not edible. I couldn't even pick it up. Too much sauce, falling apart, falafel was not hot and fresh, wayyy too much lettuce. I had to get a plate because it was falling apart, and then I couldn't eat it because it wasn't fresh and so sloppy. Yuck! I won't eat here again it wasn't worth the 25$ for mine and my husbands "food". The baklava was good. Edit: The restaurant seems to think I tried eating this an hour after ordering it, firstly how would they know, secondly, we were very hungry and live in west salem, it took us 10 or less to get home. Still one of the worst food experiences I've had in salem and even more so with the restaurants statement below. They clearly have a lack of understanding for good service. read more

I love Mediterranean food and wish immigrants to my country to succeed, but man, these young women have been cold as ice with me. Perhaps it is a cultural/language barrier issue. This cafe is in the Fork Forty food hall, a postmodern, hip, noisy venue appropriate for the under-40 crowd that is trying to keep downtown Salem vibrant, and more power to them, but it's unwelcoming for this senior. In a takeout tray, the large compartment will be the main course, one 1/4 compartment a good salad with a salty tang reminiscent of Nordic wilted cabbage salads, and the last 1/4 compartment filled with what I presume is tzatziki, but which is very bland. Included is a small tub of sriracha of nuclear heat. I've been in twice but won't come again. My favorite Mediterranean restaurant was Gyro Stop, in Keizer, but they folded. When I get a yen for this intriguing cuisine again, I'll go up the street to Al Aqsa. read more

Food- The Kafta Skewers were A-Plus. The Baklava was okay. A little dry, a little on the bland side. Service- The girl that took my order was a broody little teenager that looked as though she were being forced to work there. The cook was very nice and got our food prepared very quickly and delivered it with a smile. Ambiance- The restaurant is located in a food court. It's loud and the chairs are all metal stools and not very comfortable. Recommend getting it to go. read more

We went to the Syrian Kitchen during the summer last year, and thought the food was good, and the people making it were friendly. This time it was a weekday. The music was blaring and it was very noisy. The food was subpar. The tables were dirty and we had to ask her to clean it. She took a long time to do it. I've made Kofta balls, rice and salad that was much better than what we had this time. The rice was mushy, and the salad wasn't fresh. It seemed like it was reheated meat, rice, and a tiny salad that didn't taste fresh. Very disappointed and we are never going there again. They also had add a tip on the receipt. If they are going to do that, include it in the cost of the food upfront. We gave a tip, but the service and food certainly didn't warrant it. read more

Food is heated up in the microwave. Being a couple who has traveled all over the country and tasted 1 million different dishes of the same style. This was below subpar. This for sure has to be the worst Mediterranean food ever had. We literally paid $24 for two plates and watch them heal up our food in the microwave after being possibly frozen. Gross.
