As a child, butter chicken was my favorite Indian curry. It offers a gentle introduction to the tomato-onion-masala flavor combination that is the signature of North Indian cuisine. It's heavily spiced, but not "spicy", so it was easy to enjoy unreservedly, and the cream and butter of the dish formed a natural bridge from my American child's palate to a realm of more exotic flavors. As I grew older, I branched out. First to the UK's tikka masala, then down to the northern aloo gobi and the southern chicken vindaloo. Butter chicken was always a safe bet, but other dishes had novelty and, typically, more effectively featured spice combinations I otherwise wouldn't encounter. Eventually, butter chicken was demoted in my mind to the status of "starter curry" -- a dish which, while enjoyable, leaned too heavily on butterfat to be satisfying and lacked the kind of depth and subtlety that make for a truly great meal. Mint Leaf Indian Bistro has soundly kicked butter chicken back into the limelight. Their rendition leans in to the dish's spiced tomato base, building the curry around the hearty tomato gravy rather than the cream finish. The earthy spices mix beautifully with the acidity of the tomato and the recipe is carefully coordinated to include cream and butter to balance, but not overwhelm, the other flavors. I have found my childhood love for this classic curry restored and reinvigorated with a butter chicken that doesn't just rely on butterfat as a crutch, but which highlights and elevates each and every one of its ingredients. I'm excited to try other dishes from Mint Leaf in the future, but I cannot overstate how much I recommend their butter chicken. Also, where else are you going to get rasmalai and not one but two kinds of kulfi? Great dessert selection! read more

This place has been in business for 3 years, but I'm not in Salem very often so I just tried this place today. The food is superb, excellent, all those adjectives. Really. Clearly the best Indian food in Salem because I've tried the others. The menu has a lot of choices, the prices are reasonable, the location is right downtown with no problem finding a street parking place. Owner/manager admitted he's only recently started doing any marketing/advertising, which is why he doesn't have very much business. (How is it still in business after three years???) read more

This is a very cute and simple restaurant, keeping in theme with their name, as the walls are painted a mint color, while the table and chairs are black. It is reminiscent of mint chocolate chip ice ice cream.  There were four of us, so we were able to try many dishes. Hands down the shining star was the Badami Bainga. This was a first for me, and it was delicious. It is worth the drive just for this. I did find that even though we ordered different curries, the sauces looked and tasted very similar.  My one big gripe, which is the reason I am subtracting a star, is as soon as we sat down they handed us bottled waters. I hate going to restaurants and being served anything plastic. It is wasteful, and it distracts from the whole experience. Not to mention Oregon Water is much better than cheap terrible Kirkland Water. I noticed they had glasses on the counter, so I assumed when we ordered a mango lassi at least that would be served in a glass. Again, no such luck that again came in a plastic cup. When our food was served, it was all served with nice plates and bowls. It didn't match the tackiness of the plastic we were served at the beginning of the meal. read more

Another gem in Salem! Went for lunch and left happy! The butter chicken is incredible as is the tandoori and garlic naan. We loved the sweet and sour cauliflower dish as well. We ordered chai but it was not delivered until the end of our meal, it was still delicious but a bit late. Same with the appetizer that was delivered at the same time as our main dishes. Prices are perfect, service is great, but food delivery time still needs a bit of improvement. Overall wonderful place for lunch, I will be back. read more

Service was good. Food was meh! No spice and didn't have the complex flavors that I've experienced at a myriad other Indian restaurants I've eaten at. I order the Chicken Tikka Masala with garlic naan. Portion size was very good. Garlic naan was only okay. My wife wasn't as hungry so she ordered the samosas. She wasn't impressed with them. The waitress brought us each a complimentary serving of Kheer (rice pudding). They need to sweep the floor around and underneath the tables. There was all kinds of debris on the floor even after they cleaned and wiped down the tables. I thinki I'll try a different Indian restaurant the next time I am in the Salem area. Very tasty, affordable, and friendly service! Mint Leaf is not a fancy place, but has very good food. If you enjoy Indian food, you will appreciate Mint Leaf Indian Bistro. This was our first time here, and I promise it won't be the last. Serving sizes were large. There were three of us. We ordered three dishes, and couldn't eat everything. This meant leftovers for the next day, and they tasted at least as good then! Two of ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, and one ordered Shrimp Biryani. We all loved it! We enjoyed a quick and tasty meal as we stopped through Salem and left with full bellies. The service was friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Vegetable Korma and Aloo Gobi (our go to orders). The Aloo Gobi and Roti were delicious! The vegetable Korma had a much milder flavor than we are used to. We ordered both with medium spice and they were not spicy at all. If you like a little kick, definitely consider ordering up a level. The decor was nice and the place felt clean, but it did smell of cleaning supplies. They also serve bottled water, which seems wasteful. We will try the Paneer Butter Masala the next time we stop in. read more

I have eaten here multiple times and the food has been excellent everytime. If you like eggplant and sweet try the eggplant it is delicious! It is unlike any other eggplant dish I've ever had at an Indian restaurant. It is whole little eggplants, stuffed with sweet almonds set in a lovely curry creamy sauce. In short: They're doing absolutely everything right in the kitchen. It's kind of a long menu but I would try pretty much anything on it. In long: We drove several hours to Salem and picked this as our first dinner spot. It ended up being the food highlight of our entire trip. It's a nice setting here--office building with retail at the bottom. Wide courtyard out front, with tons of pretty hanging flower baskets livening it up a bit. Decent parking. Inside there are maybe 12-15 tables loosely divided into a two-sided dining room. Very accessible space. We walked straight to a table and started trying to make up our minds what to order. They bring you chilled water bottles as soon as you sit down (and keep putting them in front of you if you finish). Service is quiet, polite, and quick. We tried so many things. Too many to list. Saag paneer, baigan, apricot lamb, samosas, maybe 5 other things. There were 4 of us, and pretty hungry, but we thought we had waaaay over-ordered. We thought we'd have leftovers for days! Ended up with about 3 servings. The portions here are great, definitely not overdone. You can graze through the menu. As many have said, the baigan is incredible. Best eggplant dish I have had. Raisin flavor hangs way back as a subtle accent. The lamb was fantastic. We demolished everything, wiping bowls and plates out with two different kinds of naan (the manchego naan is spectacular...never seen that on the menu anywhere else, at least in my own experience). Everything here comes out with balanced flavors cooked to the exact point of perfect doneness. I've eaten chicken hundreds of times, and probably never had any so perfectly firm, juicy, and tender as the tandoor chicken here. Awesome seasoning, too. Another thing that stood out--a woman experiencing a bit of a break due to mental illness came in and ranted for a few minutes near the door. Our server made sure she had some food she could go eat, and another customer lovingly guided her out the door. I so, so appreciate businesses helping stitch the community together by taking care of people who could use a hand. In this case, she wasn't really even in a position to ask for what she needed, and they still helped. You can smell how delicious the food is here for 50 feet before you get to the door...goes to show that this place really is a mecca. On the flip side--also in a good way--they had a new customer ordering when we got up to pay. She had kids with her and could not hope to make up her mind because she hadn't tried Indian food. We told her what we liked, and gave her the same advice I'd give anybody thinking about checking out this place: If you see any ingredient you like, put that dish on the list of candidates to order. If you like chicken, or cauliflower, or bread, or whatever, try the one(s) they make here. You'll get into what they're doing very quickly. The flavors are much bigger than the Wonder Bread stuff a lot of us grew up eating in the States, but always balanced and harmonious. read more

Tried this new Indian place this evening and it is an absolute gem. The service was on point and gracious. The food was fantastic. We had the vegetable samosas, matar paneer and lamb saag with garlic naan. The vegetable samosas were perfectly cooked and delicious with just the right amount of crunch and epic flavor. The matar paneer had an appropriate cheese to pea to sauce ratio with minimal oil. The lamb saag was outstanding! The flavor was multilayered and exquisitely executed. The garlic naan came with 4 good sized garlicky pieces. So delicious! We will be back and often. If you're looking for delicious Indian food, look no farther. Ordered an ubereats pick up at the restaurant. I showed up 5 minutes before the estimated pickup time (30 minutes from time of order) and was told it would be a few minutes. I watched the cashier hand the order ticket to the cook. The cook didn't start my order for another 15 minutes and it took 10 minutes to cook. The garlic naan was over cooked, dry, and had barely any garlic. The Chicken Chapli Kebab had poorly balanced seasonings and was greasy. Not worth the wait or the price of the food read more

So I was the biggest fan for a week and 5 days. I really believed in this place, but after the curry that I received the other day spending nearly a $100, I was so upset that I went back to talk to the owners to find out one of them has already walked. My family and I had eaten over a dozen bowls of Curry and were establishing the ones we really liked. The butter chicken was one of our favorites and it was always served with the Tandoori Style Chicken cut up in the curry making it an exceptional dish. On our visit two nights ago it was far from that. The chicken was extremely thin sliced chicken that you would see in a Chinese stir fry and it had Gristle and Bone fragments attached. The shrimp Curry which again is one of our favorites was a 30% pool of oil. Now here's the worst part of it all. They're not doing sit-down anymore and forcing you to do takeout so that's what I did. When you dine in the bowl is approximately 20 oz of Curry and they drizzle a topping over it. However on their take out they're cramming the curry into a 16 oz to go container and only giving you 12 oz per Curry of rice. So not only is the product not as good, but you're totally getting ripped off on takeout. Last, but not least there was the top of a bottle that was the seal in our Curry. I washed it off and was going to show the other owner, but I decided not to even bother. Stay away from this place. Its going down very soon. read more

I had the fish tandoori, lamb saag, garlic Naan of course, strawberry Lassi, and amazing dessert balls (not sure how to spell, sorry). Great variety and selection of food choices. It's a small space, but I found it rather inviting especially with the attentive service. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala and boy did it rock my taste buds. I loved it. Wow. Worth the drive from Portland, if you want outstanding Indian food. The eggplant dish Badami Baingan is crazy good. I am not even into eggplant, but a friend swore by it so I ordered it. So glad I did. Lamb Karahi, Chicken curry, and Chicken Korma were also delicious. All ingredients taste fresh. Some Indian restaurants seem too oily. This was perfect. Clean flavors. Authentic, delicious Indian cuisine in Salem. Lots of vegetarian options and unique dishes beyond the obvious fare. We ordered the Vegetable Samosas, Paneer Masala, Black Lentils, Ghobi Aloo, and Eggplant with raisins, and Garlic Naan. The mango lassi was also refreshing and tasty. Everything was lovely, but the eggplant was the standout. One of the best Indian dishes I've had in a long time. The raisins give it a hint of sweetness that really take it to the next level.
