Absolutely bizarre & absurd lack of service!!! The young man (supposedly) hosting (?) waiting tables (?) was unprofessional, inattentive, flippant, and lazy. Our food took an inordinate amount of time to arrive but when it did it was delivered by a lovely gracious woman. The young man never checked in to see how everything was or if we desired anything. We had needed another 2 sets of flatware since we were 4 and there were only 2 place settings. I was forced to get up and go to another table to retrieve the place settings as our "server/ waiter" was absent. We ordered a chai for my 90 year old father prior to even ordering our meal yet it arrived WITH dinner and was placed nowhere near my father but on the other side of the condiments causing him to reach for it OVER the condiments, while ending up spilling hot chai on himself. My sister asked how this young man's father was, he replied, " he is home watching a game or something he doesn't come in on Saturdays unless he is covering me." If this is indeed the owner's son his attitude and behaviour is even more appalling ! My sister ordered dessert for my father,we had a table full of empty plates and dishes yet this guy did not remove any of them, he just set the sweet among them. I finally asked him to please take them away and even that he did not do immediately. When I asked for our cheque he told me that I must come to the counter. Had this been an exceptionally busy time in the restaurant we may have had a bit more patience but as it was not busy we certainly cannot understand the lack of service nor the very spacey and lackadaisical attitude. To note: upon arrival near 5 p.m today / Saturday as a party of 4 which included my sister & parents, patrons of this restaurant for years, there was only a table of 4 present hence this was not a bustling, busy afternoon. Sadly after our very lackluster experience tonight neither my parents, sister nor I will be returning or recommending Cuisine India !! There are numerous options for Indian food in Salem now. Yummy yum! The chicken was flavorful and very tender, which some Indian places miss, but not this one. Be aware, we got medium spice and it was perfectly spicy for me,but quite on the spicy side for medium. The malai kofta was delish, I would recommend! The paneer pakora was fine, but I would not get it again. The batter was so thick (maybe how the dish is supposed to be), but not my thing. The service was fine. I really liked this place! The ambiance was extremely soothing, parking was easy to find, and the food was great. I will say it was a little sad that there was one worker for the entire place and for a friday night it was pretty busy. People kept coming in and he was the only one out front. This is the best Indian food I have had in Salem. I have been there many times, but I am a dinner-only person so this is not about the lunch buffet. Our go-to items include the vegetable samosas, tandoori mixed grill, lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka kebab, the inevitable butter chicken (murgh makhani), and anything with "saag" in the name as I love spinach. Their paneer is very good, as is their naan, and I strongly recommend ordering the raita, which is a great complement for the spicy green herb sauce from the table cruet. Another thing I love, which is not for everyone, is the "mixed pickle" (achaar). It is spicy and mustardy balanced with a salty-sour fruit component. It really cuts the richness of the luscious sauces, as does the spicy Indian tea. The service is always friendly and great, and the food is reliably delicious. If you like it spicy, however, you have to ask for it HOT-hot, and mention that you are not from Salem. (The Salem palate runs sweet and mild. I am not judging my coworkers who think salt and pepper are all there is, but after living in the southwest, I long for a broader flavor spectrum.) read more

I can't blame them as state workers basically do not come into the office any more, so that must cut down on foot traffic considerably. Considering the severe lack of Indian options in Salem (#1), I'm ecstatic about Cuisine India's existence. Since coming into the scene a few years ago (#2), they have practically established themselves as the go-to option for all things Indian in this city. Do they have the best Indian food I've ever had? Hardly. However, is this the best Indian food in Salem for now? Without a doubt. The decor is minimal at best; it's almost like eating in an office or some strange commercial space. The dim lighting makes for a pseudo-ideal date night, though the ambiance was meant to be more relaxing than off putting. Tables / booths are designed for 4 person seatings, though they have a couple of larger ones in the middle to accommodate big groups. They really do try to maximize the space for how cramped it can feel in here. For most people, it starts with their daily lunch buffet. The daily spread typically includes a couple of meat options and 4 vegetarian options or so, along with salad and a dessert. For people who have enough experiences in this arena (#3), the buffet won't seem that impressive. However, at a sub $10 deal, it's a relatively good option for lunch and given the nature of an all you can eat anything --- it makes for a satisfying one as well. Timing makes a difference, they won't refill most of the items past 2pm, so the earlier one gets here, the better. Where I think their Punjabi roots shine is during dinner. Much of the food i've ordered a la carte was impressive enough to merit several visits. The sag paneer was creamy and surprisingly fragrant, the chicken korma has a nice almond'y flavor to it, and the chana masala has a good kick to it spice wise. Prices are not crazy (average entree is probably $13-14) but this is Salem so taper the expectations. Where I'd have to dock a star is how I feel about the service. It's not that it's bad per se, but it's often uncomfortable when management is directly hovering over folks or having loud conversations in an already small place. When that happens, it's difficult for diners to enjoy their food given that the environment is supposedly setup to be a tranquil, relaxing experience. Tried this gem about a month ago, and I had the chicken Korma. It was absolutely perfect! The spice was balanced. It was the most delicious Korma I've had in the area! Insanely good! My brother and I ordered delivery in mid-October 2020 and I ordered delivery again for myself in late November 2020. Delivery seems to be via a third party app, just wanted to put that out there. Food was delish! My brother ordered Vindaloo, I ordered Tikka Masala (crazy different for me, I know). Both were hot and fresh upon delivery, chicken was quality, and portions were good. I was a little perturbed to see specks in the rice, but quickly realized they were cumin or coriander seeds, so yummy. They really added to the flavor of the rice. If your craving some Indian food or perhaps a lunch buffet while in Salem then this place may suffice. Not the best I've had by any means but also not the worst either. Buffet setup is not the best or cleanest but the associates seem to try to operate this small restaurant business as best they can but it is a small restaurant space so keep that in mind. There is also no parking dedicated to restaurant so pack some change as you'll need to pay for parking - FYI Tandoori chicken was my favorite from what I had but the other items were just ok nothing to write home about if you get my drift. Just an ok place to get a quick bite. Will I be back? I just moved to Salem and need to find my go to Indian spot, this is the first place I tried. Kept it simple and ordered the CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA and the CHEESE (PANEER) NAAN. The CTM was very sweet for my liking, pretty thin soupy, and just did not have much depth of flavor IMO. The Naan was bland. The texture was fluffy and enjoyable but it was just straight crumbles of paneer which is pretty devoid of flavor by itself, I was expecting some herbs in there as well or a mixture of cheeses akin to other paneer naans I have had. One of the best Indian places I've had up here in Oregon. The food has all been really good and the prices are quite reasonable. So far we've the Chicken Saag, Paneer Tikka Masala, Aloo Palak, Vegetable Biryani, and the Cheese Naan. I'll tell you right off the bat that the Chicken Saag is terrific. The spinach puree thingy is tasty but not overly spicy, and the chicken is extremely tender. Plus the portion is a good size. Everything else was also great. Literally no complaints. The seasoning and taste, and even the spice levels were really on point. I stopped by Cuisine India for a quick snack, not a full meal. That said, the Pakora (chicken in my case) was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly seasoned, crispy-crunchy chickpea batter, fried just long enough to cook the chicken, while keeping it juicy and tender. The tamarind sauce complemented the chickpea batter beautifully, drawing out the plum-like flavors of the sauce, and the umami flavors of the chickpea and chicken. I can't imagine passing by this restaurant without stopping in to grab an order of Pakora, and I'm eager to try what else this place can offer. read more
