Fitts had been part of my life since my childhood and I often wondered why they didn't have a chip stand off of the seafood market. I saw something show up on my feed that Fitts is now serving fish and chips on Fridays and Saturdays. Always looking for good fish and chips we decided to give it a try. They have both cod and halibut (I went with the 2 piece cod) along with fried clams and a few other items on their menu. The fish was excellent! (Up until now it was five star) As this is primarily a fish market, once you have your food, there is no place to eat it. They might have it planned, but it would be nice if they even had a few bistro tables where you could eat. We tried to sit in our car but ultimately ended up driving home to eat. For me the batter was a little salty and the chips weren't anything special, but as I said before, the fish itself was excellent. read more

WOW! I am so impressed! Everything tasted incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked, nothing was overdone. It also wasn't greasy or overly oily, which I really appreciated. Once again Fitts came through for us! I advance-ordered one of their dry-aged prime rib (7 lbs) for our Christmas Dinner. I was a giant pain I know as i kept changing the date of pick-up and bone in or out or bone cut out and tied to the meat..eeek! But they were wonderful and patient with me each time I called. I sprinkled my magic dust and bought a special thermometer and sweated over each step on christmas Day until the moment I pulled it out of the oven at 120 degrees to rest to medium rare declared to our family gathering "It's freaking awesome!" And, it sliced like butter...and the rest is history! Thanks to all the staff and owner Mike at Fitts. The first thing I look for when at a seafood market is how clean it is. Nothing is worse than not being able to trust the freshness of the product! But, as I walked in, I was incredibly impressed by how clean the place looked. The displays the seafood is held in were nice and tidy, the seafood itself looked fresh, the kitchen looked extremely sanitary, and the entire place looked very well maintained. The staff are knowledgeable and hospitable with lots of helpful tips. I called them before heading to the shop and they answered every question I had, plus gave me extra options based on the dish I was planning to make. I loved that! When I got into the store, the person helping me was very enthusiastic and looked happy to assist me. In the end, I went with the $29.99/lbs Ahi Tuna. It tasted incredible and the person I shared the dish with, who is from Hawaii, commented on how surprised she was on how fresh the fish tasted! It was a great experience. Always the freshest of fresh! This is definitely not the cheapest place to purchase fresh or fresh/frozen seafood in Salem, but this is most definitely the absolute best place. Just yesterday I purchased some fresh Pacific Seafood herring in wine sauce there--I've also purchased it in the jar at another grocer in town. Here's the difference: while the jarred refrigerated Pacific Seafood herring at Salem's top grocer is always very good, the Fitts herring (which Fitts buys in bulk before it even gets jarred) is so fresh it still tastes like the ocean. Not a "fishy" flavor. An ocean flavor. Their fresh oysters from various PNW bays are always great as well. And they ALWAYS still taste like the ocean. So if you want the freshest of fresh seafood (and are willing to pay a bit more for it), this is most definitely the place to go! read more

Came in to pick up some very fresh Black Cod. Took it home and grilled it. The cod was incredible! Each flake was buttery soft, just melted in my mouth. It was caught same day and filleted. Fitts is a great place for all types of fresh seafood. I posted pictures of it after I cooked it. read more

This place is a complete rip off and worse. Rip off: overpriced garbage for folks who think the more they spend the better quality they are receiving. I have had more substantial meals for 25¢ in Mexico. Example: less potatoes as filler. Worse: I bought clam chowder and received salmon chowder. Easy mistake, however upon exchange attempt I was told it is all clams. My returned item was tossed, without inspection, money refunded! Money refunded is good. I would have been happy with a less potato filled clam chowder, but... No. Instead, I was told I couldn't tell salmon from clam and threatened, yes threatened with physical violence. Fabulous locally owned fish market in Salem. Family owned and operated since 1901. Fitts and his wife do a great job running the place, although the balance of their staff is top notch as well. Fish is all clearly marked fresh, frozen, farmed, etc. but questions always seem to be welcome. Prices seem pretty competitive based upon the selection and quality. Nice selection. Staff is always willing to bone and skin any piece of fish. They have a pretty amazing little condiment selection, plus nice wines and beer. This place is a hidden gem - super-fresh, local seafood that is reasonably-priced; charming and helpful guys behind the counter who are happy to answer a million questions about sourcing, preparation, etc.; an impressive selection of artisanal cheeses/truffle oils/meats (including game, free-range local chicken and Olympic Provisions!)/pasta/condiments/local wine; and, apparently, some great chowder (sells out really quickly, so I've never been able to snag some). sorry to say but over the years I have used this place for seafood. when I approached the owner one day and call the head of time is saying there is a major problem with oysters I bought he said bring them back. the oysters were black inside from grit and so forth but they were dead. I did say this s is not good business for you. I did use the S word in explaining that the product was not good. I know the owner for over 20 years and he knows how I do things and I'm really always generally nice. but this was an exception. he buys the seafood from the wholesaler that services Roths. and they're cheaper. read more
