Oh, man... this was my best seafood experience yet! I visited at about 6PM on a Thursday and was promptly seated for a table of 2. We seriously had the SWEETEST server! She took SUCH good care of us and was super knowledgeable about the menu items and market prices. We got our drinks within minutes and she made sure they were never empty. Not to mention, she checked in on us multiple times during our visit. I ordered the combo # 2 and added a Dungeness crab to it. That bad boy was FRESH. The whole boil was dripping in sauce, cooked perfectly and let me tell you... the Louisiana flavor seasoning is IT!! It's the perfect mix of Cajun and garlic butter. The main star was definitely the Dungeness, but the snow crab was a close second! The legs were a really good size and full of meat! The shrimp was great too! (I always get head-on) I left soooo full and satisfied! Overall, the food was amazing and the service was the best I have received in years.. We will be back soon! read more

Mixed Bag (o crab) The food was almost all great. We tried garlic fries, salad, clam chowder, snow crab, king crab, and lobster. DS picked this restaurant for celebrating his 18th b-day, so it was disappointing that his king crab was twice as expensive as the snow crab and not great quality. Everything else was great - fresh, saucy, and well-seasoned. I liked that we could add potatoes and sausages to fill out our meal. The service was weird. Our waitress was really sweet and friendly, but seemed clueless. There was nothing on the table - no napkins or salt shakers or utensils. I had to ask for a fork for my salad, then for utensils for the crabs. The ambience was a mixed bag. There was a homeless guy next to our van and signs of a recent campfire. The restaurant was mostly empty, but they didn't offer my family a booth - we had to sit with our kids at a table in the bar. The lighting was good. It was very frustrating not to have metal forks and crab picks. It feels like a high end restaurant, but the utensils are cheep disposable plastic and there was a weird robot was talking too loudly in a weird high pitched girlish voice. The bathroom was really dirty. Overall, I would eat here if someone else were paying because the food was mostly great. For the price, I would want a few improvements. read more

All service ware was disposable. I didn't really care for the sandwich, not really bad but certainly not really good. I would not get one again. Several breaded fried shrimp, a watery sauce and lettuce inside a decent sub. bun. Very generous and good fresh French fries. I am giving 3*'s because I expected the po'boy to be better tasting - could just be chalked up to personal preference. Saw this restaurant up the street from my hotel while on a business trip. Checked out their presence on Yelp, and saw that they had Shrimp Po'Boy on the menu. I grew up on Shrimp Po'Boys, as a native Gulf of Mexico Texan. So I ordered the Shrimp Po'Boy with a side of sweet potato fries and a cup of Gumbo. I got a fish basket with sweet potato fries, and a cup of chowder as take out. I think I got six pieces of fish that were about 3" x 3" and so thin they might've been a quarter of an inch thick when looked at from the side including the breading. There's about as much meat as there is breading. I had to look twice to see if I had actually ordered chicken because this did not taste like fish, it did not look like fish and all I could taste was the breading. I ate all of it because I was hungry and it was at least palatable. Super disappointment. The sweet potato fries had a weird funk to them. I don't know if it was the potatoes the oil they were cooked or whatever was sprinkled all over them. I was really craving sweet potato fries, which is why I made the choice I made, and they ended up going in the trash. They are not edible. The chowder was thick and creamy there's a seasoning. I don't know what it is. I've had it before. It doesn't make it bad but it's not a seasoning. I really care for. Overall, the chowder was good once I got past that seasoning. Overall, if you want fish and chips, you would be better off if you were to "trust the Gorton fisherman" and just buy them in the freezer case along with a bag of fries and cook them yourself. Best seafood boil i've had! Most seafood boil places i tried their sauce is so overwhelming and salty. But their sauces are really good, it's spicy n rich. The service was amazing super kind and nice staff. We came in just before it was last call. I had the lobster and the shrimp boil combo. The fries taste like cajun seasoning very good. they provide you with gloves and a bibs to protect you from getting your hands dirty. Great spot you gotta try it out! read more

Edited: the Manager, Gary was super responsive to my concerns. I look forward to a future visit and an improved experience. I really wanted to enjoy this place, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations in a few key areas. From the start, the service left much to be desired. The hostess was seated in the bar area with her back to the entrance, not exactly ideal for greeting guests. I stood at the entrance for nearly five minutes before anyone even noticed I was there. It wasn't until another group entered and made noise that the hostess looked up and saw me waiting. Sadly, the lack of attentiveness didn't end there. My server dropped off my food and checked in once, but otherwise walked past my table several times without stopping. I had to ask for napkins, a drink refill, the check, and even a to-go bag. It felt like I was an afterthought the entire time. As for the food, while the seafood itself was cooked well, the sauce was disappointing. It was overly thick, grainy, and more like a gravy that quickly solidified. Instead of enhancing the dish, it made it difficult to enjoy. I found myself scraping it off rather than soaking it up, which is the opposite of what you'd hope for in a seafood boil. The crawfish texture wise were surprisingly good for being frozen however most were so dirty it was unappetizing. I felt like the dirt was all in the sauce too etc. as I was peeling them, my fingers would get muddy and gritty. Upon my exit, I found where some of the distraction may have stemmed from. About 5 of the wait staff were hovered around a table in the corner with their Dutch Bros and Jimmy John's just enjoying themselves. Maybe there is no break room etc for the staff however that location also did not seem appropriate as those who may have been on break were a distraction for those actively serving guests. In short, solid potential with the quality of the seafood, but the service and sauce missed the mark. Hoping this was just an off day, but I'm not in a hurry to return. read more

Absolutely the worst meal we've ever had! Party of 11 stopped to celebrate my grandsons 21st birthday. The fried fish was the most disgusting over cooked and dry meal ever. Shrimp was like rubber. The crawdads were terrible. A dozen had maybe a spoonful of meat. Requested salad dressing on the side and was served on salad. The corn on the cob was just mush. The clam chowder served in a Dixie cup was so salty it was inedible. Our total ticket was about $195.00 plus the 15% service charge. The chicken wings were just coating and hardly any chicken. The short ribs were just gristle. The mixed drinks were the weakest we've ever had. The server did not ask if we needed anything. The robot carrying the food was a joke. I hate to leave a review like this but it ranks as one of the worst meals we've had in Salem in many years. read more

Mixed feelings about Bag O Crab -- more a 3-and-a-half than a four. Stopped in for lunch with a friend and found the place clean and inviting with good lighting and decor. We both ordered 'bags': I had shrimp with Cajun seasoning plus corn and potatoes. Service was good (the place was mostly empty on a weekday early afternoon). Food arrived quickly (the robot is kinda cute) and we donned bibs and gloves, and jumped in. I enjoyed the sauce and had a good time with the corn and potatoes, but the shrimp was badly overcooked (rubbery) -- you really shouldn't do that to shrimp. Still, we had a good time. This was our first trip to Bag O Crab so we ordered more than we normally would. We used to go to a chain called the Boiling Crab that was the same style/system and it was excellent, so we were really looking forward to this! Unfortunately it fell short in every area. First things first: the food. We ordered three things for appetizers: a cup of gumbo; six spicy Korean wings; and a breaded shrimp basket with Cajun fries. The gumbo seemed nearly identical to the foodservice version in my workplace cafeteria, with indiscernible minced ingredients and the telltale pimiento element "for color", not flavor. The wings were not "Korean wings", which are crunchy, vibrant, and spiced to thrill; these were the same little parts you get at Domino's: seemingly baked, not fried (and definitely not crispy), with a mild syrupy glaze. The fried shrimp had a fish-fry breading that was too heavy for the size. I was hoping for a light, crispy batter, but the breading tasted fine; it just needed proportionately larger shrimp. The fries were lightly cooked and barely seasoned. I was happy to pay extra for Cajun fries, but they were nearly naked. Entrees came out rapidly and were perfectly cooked. Respect for that, since the shrimp were fully opaque, but still tender, not tough. I had 3/4 pound head-off shrimp with the Atomic sauce, which mixes garlic butter, lemon pepper, and spicy Cajun. The garlic seemed freshly chopped, but if there was pepper, lemon, or Cajun in there, it got lost. Again, no salt. Unfortunately, the shrimp were indifferently cleaned. I know they are bought in bulk and cleaned before they arrived -- I don't blame the restaurant -- but I don't eat the mud strip and it was hard to pick out myself due to the seasoning. I didn't finish. My husband had the mixed crawfish and shrimp. The first crawfish was fine, but the second and third were very off / ammoniac and not okay, so he bailed, too. Again, that's a provisioner issue, but did the restaurant sample the quality? Heat level: the Dynamite (4/5 for heat) was not remotely spicy or hot. I know this is Salem, but that was barely a 2/5. Salem likes their spicy food mild so that might be a good fit here, but if you want to feel the heat, try the five and let us know how it goes. Seasoning: bland, bland, bland across the board, unsalted like the cooking on a cardiac ward. Service: great overall. The hosts and servers were friendly and prompt, and automated food delivery (robot butler) brought the food out hot and fresh. We did have a dry spell of around twenty minutes between our table being finished / squared away and getting our check, which I imagine was due to shift change. Parking and seating were highly available, but we came early. Beverage options were limited but fine. Prices were low, all things considered, but I would rather pay more and get more. Ambiance: identity crisis. The Newport Bay interior is unchanged, but instead of clam chowder and a seafood supper, you are getting a bag of buttery sea bugs that you eat with your hands -- food best served in what would feel like a casual Louisiana joint, with plastic cups of beer, moppable tile floors, and brown paper on the table inviting a stack of shrimp shells. This place has carpeted floors, frugal drinks, and slick white paper that shows smears. Next to us, two well-dressed ladies were struggling to manage their stemmed glasses of white wine in their buttery crab-boil PPE, but they looked right for the Newport Bay environment. I know comparison is invidious (the Boiling Crab really is top notch) but more and better fried items, gumbo with identifiable ingredients, a larger grade of shrimp, and even a pinch more salt would be well worth the few extra bucks. The first time the food was good customer service wasnt the best Second time the food was ok the shrimp was overcooked their customer service was ok. Third time the seasoning was way too salty and not enought butter. I asked for more butter on the side but the butter was also salty so I didn't want to add more.. The waitress was nicer this time tho. We were sat by the back it was a Tuesday so not that busy we were sat right away. The restaurant has plenty parking too. Stopped by for lunch on a Thursday at 1 pm. Just four cars in the parking lot, wife and I weren't sure if they were open. A few homeless wandering around the neighborhood along with some encampments a block away. The restaurant used to be Newport Seafood Company and had been vacant for years. Besides turning on the thermostat, I don't think the new owners have done anything to the place. To offset the dated interior, they featured a robot who rolls around delivering food to the tables. Sometimes I did I helped myself other times the waitress presented the food. There was a wrong delivery to our table so I'm guessing some human programmed it wrong. Since we were seated right next to the kitchen despite literally a couple dozen open tables, the robots whizzing by and chirping got old quickly. Kids would like the novelty. The food... I've been to these places around the country under different names but they are all the same. My wife and I ordered Shrimp Po Boys and it was quite good but a little dry. I tried the clam chowder and was impressed. I looked into the bar and it was impressive and inviting but not really a drinking place for my tastes. Overall, meh... nothing good or bad.
