I got Pollo Asada as usual and it was not good! Chicken was tough and burnt and mostly rice and beans. Very little veggies and no avocado or sour cream. Something has happened here and things are deteriorating. I would not recommend. read more

25+ years ago this was our go-to Mexican restaurant when we lived in Salem. This was our first time back since we moved in 2000! Food was just as outstanding as before. The fresh homemade tortillas were so good. Bacon wrapped shrimp was spot on. Can't wait to be back again someday! read more

I have been going to La Hacienda Real for YEARS. I normally get the veggie burrito. A burrito that is normally FILLED with VEGETABLES. The recent "veggie burrito" was a burrito literally filled with RICE and about 5 pieces of vegetable!! I kept thinking "where are the veggies" and I mentioned this to my friend too. I left a Google review as it wasn't that big a deal at the time. But, I thought about it and it was almost $18.00 for a burrito that was STUFFED WITH RICE? RICE is the cheapest ingredient in said burrito. If you are going to do that LHR, call it a RICE burrito with 5 pieces of vegetables on the menu. I wish I would have taken a photo at the time before I polished it off. Don't get me wrong, I love the food, and I will visit LHR again. Just disappointed. :( read more

It was my first time coming here. The decor is colorful and ranch themed. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I enjoyed the beans and slaw served with tortilla chips when you first sit down. The salsa was fresh and delicious. The refried beans were perfectly salted and smooth like butter (probably not vegetarian). I also tried the whole pinto beans, which were simple and straightforward--like something you'd get at a friend's house. The rice was balanced and flavorful, not overly salty like you sometimes find at chain restaurants. The shredded beef in my taco was tender without being greasy, so the shell stayed crisp. The red sauce had a little kick but, again, wasn't overloaded with salt. Everything tasted intentional and thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere surprised me. When I first walked in at 8:30 PM, it looked a quiet Monday night and they sent the staff home, but within a second I was greeted warmly and the dining room began to fill. By 9:10 p.m., at least seven tables were occupied with families, students, and regulars chatting with the waitstaff like old friends. It's clearly a neighborhood favorite, and if I lived here, it would probably become mine too. The menu is extensive, (pics uploaded) offering Mexican-American classics along with house specialties. Staff are very nice and accommodating. Restaurant is pretty busy at dinner time. We had a pretty large group, and they were able to seat us at a couple tables close to each other. The menu is pretty lengthy. It will be hard for you to find a Mexican dish that isn't on the menu. I felt like the food lacks the spiciness and flavor of most other Mexican restaurants. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either -- Pretty much middle of the road. I would eat here again, if I'm invited to a birthday party or something like that, but I don't think I'd return on my own. There are 2 or 3 much better Mexican restaurants in Salem for the same or better prices. read more

In the event you're down and quarantining with Covid or flu, do yourself a favor and order a delivery of Tortilla soup! It does the body good, is so healing and will help your throat. La Hacienda Real South Salem - I love the Mexican salad or slaw they serve with the chips! But good luck ordering it as a side. Service is hit and miss as far as checking on you. Sometimes I feel they want to get you in, get you fed and get you out for the next group. I get it you are in the business to make money BUT it is also a service industry. I want to savor my meal and not feel rushed. Post pandemic the food quality seems to have diminished and portions cut but prices continue to rise like everywhere. If you are going to increase prices and cut portions you better up the quality! After my last two visits I am not in a rush to return. read more

Also their salsa verde on anything is good. They do a crab enchilada with the salsa verde, and sour cream and guac, that is fabulous. I don't think it's on the menu though. We all loved this restaurant!! It was way more than I expected. I don't know why it doesn't have a 5-star overall review. Everything was so fresh. My husband ordered the Burrito Colorado (maybe Chili Colorado is the same thing?). The beef was SO tender & flavorful! I took a little of his, combined it with my side plate of rice& beans and an order of the fresh made flour tortillas. I cut up the meat and had a little in 3 little tortillas. Those few pieces made the entire burrito!! By the way, we saw a lady making the tortillas in room that is part of the kitchen. The server told me an order of tortillas included 4. There were at least 6 in there!! Needless to say, we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We are just traveling through but we found that there is another one down in Sacramento. We hope it ends up being the same quality food and service! The ambiance is relaxed. At 3 pm on a Sunday afternoon, they were so busy - which was a great sign. Before we had been there for 3 minutes, 3 servers came by. They have a lot of people working here, they were walking up and down the aisles between tables the entire time we were here. As soon as they noticed that someone looked like they would need something soon, they took care of it. As soon as a plate was cleared, they cleared the table of it. If someone needed a drink refill, someone would take care of it. It wasn't like one server per area, there were at least 4 people working in the area we sat in. What a great concept. It really made a difference in our dining experience. I sure wish we lived close to this restaurant!!!! We don't go to restaurants often and when we do, it's a treat. I am a Hispanic woman from Los Angeles and have lived in Central America, so I feel confident attesting to the fact that La Hacienda Real has some of the best, authentic Mexican cuisine in the U.S. It's impossible to go wrong with anything on the menu (and the menu is exhaustive). All of the food is delicious and freshly-made. I love the authenticity of the restaurant as well. I've been going to La Hacienda Real for years and all of the staff speak Spanish, which makes it feel like home for us Hispanics in the area. And I cannot leave a review without mentioning the tortillas. Oh my god, the tortillas. The flour tortillas, to be exact. They're the best tortillas you'll ever taste in your life, I can promise you that. There are numerous locations in the Salem-Keizer area, and they are all essentially the same. My only small complaint (hence the four-star review) is that some locations differ when it comes to the quality of the food. I've had a few orders that didn't quite live up to expectations, but it's never deterred me from coming back. If you're going to frequent any Mexican spot in the area, this is the place to frequent. Had takeout last night which was wonderful. I always get the Carne Asada dinner and then we got a side of guacamole ,chimichanga and chili rellano. Always ready in 15 minutes packaging is good as much as they can do is cardboard so that's appreciate it rather than plastic . What really amazes me was the interior total redesign to accommodate Covid requirements! Take a look at the photos I'm posting from what I was told it's done it by hand , I believe the done by family to some extent. But whoever did it did a wonderful job! I would have to say to date this is the best accommodation to the new world we live in that I've seen in the restaurant scene in Salem!
