Yoohoo Morgan and Dee Jay!!! Thanks to Morgan and Dee Jay for keeping me company while I waited for my pal. I liked that the hotel (which I found out what it was while sitting there waiting) has a free cocktail tasting . Kinda cool for hotel guests who stay. This restaurant is very nice with outdoor patio seating and has nice clean dining area. Great place for date night honestly! It's located at the entrance of the hotel so you can't miss it! There's a television above the bar so you're not uncomfortable waiting in the lobby if you must! Again, there's valet parking here which the restaurant will validate if you're eating here otherwise valet parking cost $12. Stop in and say hi to the entire staff as everyone was so nice and polite. I liked seeing diversity galore, which gives it a definite, "come back" vibe. If you know you knew! Overall, great experience! Super pretty hotel restaurant in Tempe. Girls night out pregame dinner. Shared the octopus salad, trout entree and toffee pudding ~$72 tax + tip. Octopus salad was good, octopus cooked well, not chewy. Mustard vinaigrette was very tangy (so if you don't like that extra zing watch out, I didn't mind). The small candied nuts were really crunchy so it gave a weird crunchy vibe to the octopus, maybe it was the bottom of the topping bowl. Trout cooked well, served w/fried Brussel sprouts and textured crunchy black rice. Toffee pudding was on the sweet side. They didn't have orange sherbet, so they served it with an abuelita Mexican chocolate gelato. Hints of cinnamon and a super strong vanilla note gave it almost a boozy flavor. read more

Tired from last night's blast of a time in downtown phoenix, decided to have brunch at the alter ego restaurant downstairs.. temps outside 96F, with steam being sprayed at the patio, ordered salmon on the board, with eggs, and Denmark Chicken Sausages, as well as their famous burger, side of fries, and pancakes, alongside coffee and cranberry juice.. while the ambience was great, the breakfast or should I say brunch was over the top aaaamazing!! I went back , this time wanted to try their breakfast menu. I had the Ego Sando with gluten free bread and chicken sausage . It was very flavorful and good . I wanted to tried their chilaquiles but are not gluten free and unfortunate I have a gluten allergy. I would try their chilaquiles, they seem really good . Had again good service, reasonably price . There is also Wi-Fi access , typically only accessible to hotel room guests but just ask one of waitresses and they can give you Wi-Fi access . I had the Salmon Miso with sticky rice dish during the lunch hour. It tasted really good in my opinion and they tailored the dish as Gluten Free (GF) for my allergy. I would suggest next time to add a little less oil but other than was well prepared . Also, the waiter ( Armando ) was very polite and attentive to my dietary needs. The ambience and decor is nice and comfortable facing University Dr in Tempe . I think the prices are reasonable for the good menu options they offer and the portions are right . Our waiter took it back and apologized, asked if there was something else he would like instead, and that was it. It kind of felt like this was just a regular occurrence for them. Compare this to my fav brunch spot (Windsor's), where my friend's salad was mistakenly made non-vegan, and they whisked it away, made a new one, and comped the meal. The aesthetic was pretty and the bathroom was 5/5, but I'm one for value and the value is extremely lacking here. There are so many better options in the area. read more

Food was good. Service was mediocre and our tab was messed up. We had brunch service and ordered micheladas - which we had to explain to the server was it was to ask if they could do it. Which the server said yes - upon presentation of the bill we had an unexpected charge of Bloody Mary + a beer where we learned the bartenders made blood Mary's with tequila and added beer. One of my party can't drink hard liquor so this was a concern for us since we received something we didn't order. I expressed concern to the server who then punted me to the bartender who told me that's how the ticket was put in so that's how she made it. I asked for a manager who seemed no where in sight and waited for but no one came before I had to leave for another engagement. Came here for an early Sunday dinner during restaurant week. We made reservations for 4:30PM thinking we would beat the rush. We get there and find out they don't start serving until 5PM : / We pass the time by exploring the restaurant and hotel. There's a great view from the rooftop bar Alibi! Back to Alter Ego. Having spent time in Spain, I was looking forward to their Spanish inspired restaurant week menu. I enjoyed two out of the three dishes. The Spanish Charcuterie was reminiscent of the tapas I've had in Spain. The Cinnamon Sugar Rosquillas were delicious! The paprika crusted cod tasted how it looked, burned (see pic). We enjoyed our meal at alter ego. I'll admit, it was a little overpriced. However, the portions were decent, and the service was outstanding. We never had to ask for more coffee or water. I got the avocado toast on the gluten free bread, which is also soy free and vegan friendly. Also got the side of breakfast potatoes (so good!) and a bowl of fruit. As you can see, it's actually fresh fruit, which rarely happens! Definitely would recommend for a nice relaxing meal. read more

My salad was good it had a variety of flavors a little sweet and savory from the dressing. I love arugula so this salad hit the spot. Sunday Brunch! Yes, please! Met a group of friends here this past Sunday! We were planning on going elsewhere to enjoy a patio , but with the rainy weather and cooler temps in the Valley, opted for Alter Ego. They're located in the Canopy Hilton right off of Mill Ave, so parking can be a bit tricky, especially since there are frequent events in downtown Tempe. We did score a street right by it though! FTW! Sunday is free street in Tempe, as well as evenings. We did get a bit confused as there are many different doors for Alter Ego, but they're all locked and you just go through the front hotel Lobby. They were super flexible and got six of us and a baby seated promptly. The space is such a vibe, big ceilings, boho all the things, a very cool space. They did seat us without a high chair, which we had to hunt down a bit and asked a server who then just said they would find our server. They were out of all cinnamon rolls and tortillas for breakfast burritos at about 12. Major bummer, but it is a weekend in a college town, so I get it. Menu on Sunday is brunch/lunch combo and one page, simple but ample options. The food took another 30-40 minutes, with very little communication, which is always frustrating, especially when you're hungry. My husband and I shared the ego Benedict and banana brûlée pancakes. The Benedict was delicious, super units flavor with spicy kick and great and fresh fruit served on the side. The pancakes, though also good and very aesthetic, didn't have any bananas - I asked the server who said they don't normally and just have dried banana chips on top. I let her know that when I looked at Yelp and checked out the menu it said otherwise. She then confirmed with the kitchen and follows up saying they were out of bananas which is why they didn't include them. Don't get me wrong, college town, I get it, but why wouldn't you tell someone that when they order BANANA pancakes?! It was a bit frustrating, as that was the main reason I opted for them and that they were out of cinnamon rolls. Overall, it was fine. I don't know if I would go back. We both chose the steak salad with our dressing on the side. I am happy I didn't have the dressing on the salad. The steaks were supposed to be medium but they came out rare. The flavor was good. We were staying at the hotel so decided to get a drink downstairs here at the bar. Love the ambiance. Very trendy. The bartender was very personable, handsome young guy. Also another very flamboyant and other friendly server waiting on tables. Our first round was a few shirley temples. Nice and refreshing. My second round, I asked if they did blended. Unfortunately they didnt do that but referred me to their sister bar upstairs for a blended drink. Then I asked if he could do an amaretto sour, he couldn't. And the again if he could do a midori sour. Also couldn't make it. He did honestly look for the ingredients for me so I appreciated his effort. I wasnt really disappointed. But just thought those were kind of standard bar drinks. But I'm assuming covid is the answer for lack of variety. Not the man's fault. He then suggested a whiskey sour. I gladly accepted. The banh mi bowl doesn't remind me of a banh mi sandwich without the bread. But it was delicious. The tofu was marinated well so it was so yummy. The salad with itself was good and I love that fresh mint. We also had the 3 cheese pepperoni flatbread and that was also delicious. You can definitely taste the flavor depth from the 3 cheeses. When you walk in, first thing you notice is the lobby decor w/ greenery, since the restaurant is part of the hotel. The front desk person greets you and points you to the direction of the bar - a little odd for me but it's okay. I stated I had a reservation (honestly not necessary). I will point out, I initially made the reservation for brunch but it turns out they stop serving breakfast items at 10 am - pretty annoying. Soooo, we had to change our "food goals" to lunch items. But finding this Alter Ego is as simple as navigating to the Canopy Hotel and heading inside to this first floor restaurant. Good selection of bar and non-bar seating. My cocktail of choice was the Dahlia, a passion fruit and pomegranate margarita that even better than it sounds! The Crispy Brussels Sprouts were... crispy! I didn't love them, but would probably order them again. The Crispy Chicken Wings were also crispy. Good theme going here. There were some veggies and two dipping sauces included - a honey barbecue that I preferred and a sweeter teriyaki that was also pretty tasty. Recommended! Last up was the Banh Mi Salad with added chicken. That added chicken was $10, so not sure if it was worth the price... but it was a really good salad. My Vietnamese is now good enough to know that the name is totally inappropriate for a breadless salad... but I won't let that affect my affection for it.
