I've been going to the Hum Dinger from the time it was a Dairy Queen in the 1950's. Located on the Hoquiam River, I spent many an hour as a boy throwing rocks into the river from the Dinger's parking lot. Now I take photos of the shipyard across the way (a poor excuse to drive from Olympia for a milkshake). But back to the Hum Dinger. This is a classic American home town hamburger stand. No buzzers and bells - just good food. Milk shakes are dee - lish. Burgers done on an old iron grill the way they should be cooked. Sitting in your car, the staff bangs on the Hum Dinger's window to tell you your order is up, as it has been done for decades (how many of those pane windows have been broken over the years??) Places like this, that reflect an era and the local community are fading away in favor of chain places. Thank Goodness the Dinger still stands with a loyal following. read more

If you happen to be driving through the town of Hoquiam and you feel even the TINIEST BIT hungry, do yourself a favor and stop at the Hum Dinger for a cheeseburger, onion rings (with special awesome sauce) and a shake. You won't be sorry you did. Two things to know if you do stop by: 1) you'll need a whole lot of napkins and 2) they pound on the plate glass window to let you know your order is ready. Great place! Stopped here on my way back from the beach. Had the halliburger (halibut) and a chocolate peanut butter shake, both were great. Nothjbg fancy, just solid, quality roadside diner food. They also have a dog menu and the outside seating is dog friendly, so I enjoyed a beautiful summer afternoon eating outside with my dog. I was really impressed with the service here. MILKSHAKES!!! Yum! My favorite item at Humdingers: Peanut Butter shake. We stop here 1-2 times a year when traveling from the Tacoma area to the north ocean beaches. If you are driving in from Tacoma/Olympia and need a meal stop before continuing on for another hour plus to Quinault, Kalaloch, or Forks, skip Aberdeen & go another 10 mins to eat here. You will be glad you did. Beyond here there isn't much else until you get to Amanda Park (or even farther, to Forks). Menu prices on attached image--as of March 2015. Very simple roadside burger stop. Some items are slightly more expensive than chain fast food burgers, but better for sure. The milkshakes are excellent, the fries are always fresh, and the burgers are generously dressed. The regular beef patties are a bit on the thin side, but all the toppings make it a satisfying burger. (We've never tried the 1/3 lb, only the thin patty shown in the pictures.) This use to be the best burger in town. I haven't been in years so we went there a couple nights ago. Service was great, still knock on the window when your order is done. Crinkle fries were fresh and hot. Coffee shake was delicious! The burger buns weren't toasted like before and if they were, very light and almost soggy. The meat patty was so thin I couldn't taste the beef. The sauce was okay, but very heavy on the mustard. It was edible, but it just wasn't like I remembered to be. read more

The lady behind the plexiglass shield wouldn't take my order until I put on my mask, which was in the car. Fine. When I go back 15 seconds later with my mask on she is no longer at the window to take my order. I look in the back where they are cooking the burgers and at least two of the people back there are NOT wearing masks. So I have to wear a mask to order food, but they don't have to wear masks to prepare the food??? There has been a different bunch in there for the last couple of months, maybe it changed ownership. I should start this by saying I only had fries and only because I wanted to know what "fry sauce" was. The waitress told me fry sauce is a proprietary blend of ketchup, mayo, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and Tabasco sauce. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't amazing either. I can definitely see coming back for the fries someday, though I think the style of business would be better suited to a more oceanfront location as it would have appeal to walk up diners. There is not a ton of parking for a drive up diner, the ordering counter is in this tiny windowed corridor that maybe 8 people can fit in uncomfortably, and there's no place to stand outside to wait for your food. This means that if you're a walk up diner and it's raining, you're pretty much awkwardly in everyone's way. The only complaint I have is that the simple order of fries took almost 15 minutes. The secret is that this restaurant is so good that it doesn't need anything more on its menu! There is no inside seating (feel free to wait in your car for your order) but there are a few picnic tables outside for those who'd like to eat while looking upon the sunken (and sinking) boats on the river! But, we're all here for the food! My husband agreed with me that these are some of the best burgers we've ever had. The fries are always hot & crispy. The onion rings are so delicious that I could just sit and eat them all day. The milkshakes are thick and creamy. I've only had the chocolate shake because when you find perfection, why change it up? Onion rings are top of the line and my hen loved to eat the humdinger burger. She enjoyed going there and would get so excited when she saw where she was going and cry out when she knew the order was ready before the lady would bang on the window. As part of her bucket list I took her there on my way to the coast, she hadn't been eating and could not walk. I sat my burger by her and she ate the whole thing. Shortly after eating these burgers on a regular basis she started walking and I attribute it to the humdinger burger. Rude. Overpriced & disappointed. I went into this place at 8pm on August 31st for my first time. I ordered a deluxe burger and fries. I paid almost $5 for a burger that came out to be so tiny that it didn't even fill me up. So much for " Deluxe". I am not a big person at all. I am a 5'2" little girl that weights 120 pounds. I also paid for fries but I think they forgot to put the rest of the fries in the tray. And to top it off I hear a loud ( I mean loud. Like the window was going to break) bang on the window and a lady that pointed at me and started yelling at me when I clearly could not hear what she is saying when I'm outside and she is inside. Once we got to the window we realized our food was ready but they told us they would take it out to our car. I've eaten at Humdinger three times my husband thinks their hamburgers are the best I could not eat it but I have a problem with hamburger anyway but I have had twice halibut is very dry not worth a penny and I just ate a steak sandwich and it was on a hamburger bun which was terrible and the onion rings were burned I will never go back there again unless it's just for an ice cream something they don't have to cook and mess up it was awful not worth the money at all it's cheap but the quality is cheap read more

So I moved back to the area after 20 plus years and was disappointed with humdinger of 2019 vs.1998 the onion rings were miniscule only got 5 rings and the dipping sauce containers are so small you can't possibly dip into them while the burger had the same great taste I was sadly disappointed with the rest of the meal the shake was also disappointing as I remembered the shake of my past being loaded with cunks that clogged your straw...no longer and it was thin....shame on humdinger for ruining my reunion I'll go to grizzly den next time..... read more
