We have visited Aloha shack several times in the last year during the pandemic. They serve up amazing Hawaiian style dishes and snacks. The lumpia are incredible, the pancit noodles mouthwatering, the Katsu is extra crispy, and the sauces are salty and delicious. Their Mac salad is just creamy enough without being overly mayo-y. They sever more flavors of spam than I've seen in any other establishment. The kalua pork is always tender and juicy. If you've never had banana lumpia, this is the place to try it. It's been a while since we've eaten at Aloha Shack and today was a good day to drop by because we got in the restaurant just before a whole slew of people came in. We ordered the special of the day: Pork Adobo Rice bowl and it was delicious; the pork was melt-in-your-mouth tender with plenty of fluffy, white rice. We also ordered some plain chicken "wing" appetizers (because we couldn't decide on a sauce), chicken katsu plate and chicken katsu sandwich. Ok so like... I'm a die hard, NdN Taco .. Native Taco.. Navajo Taco... whatever you want to call it, fan. I'm a big, big fan. So when I saw this as today's special over at Aloha Shack, I ran over. 25 minutes away didn't phase me. I had to get one. Once I got there and the nice lady at the counter asked me if I wanted anything else...I couldn't help myself. Why yes...I'll have some Pork Lumpia too! My order was made really fast for not having called it in first. But if you're an impatient Karen, they do take orders over the phone too, so your wait time would be even less. I was also excited to see Seagrams Ginger ale on the soda fountain! You don't see ginger ale often! Yall, I did not expect the lumpia, or the taco to be so big! I'm used to super skinny lumpia, served with sweet chili sauce, and these were egg roll size!! Filled with lush pork and veggies and dipped in a garlicky gingery soy sauce. Holy crap. Phat Lumpia is the way to go, and I never want another sauce ever again. Well worth the $8. The taco was big! Which made me really happy. For $10 I got the taco and a drink! The taco shell was a bit thin. I do love an extra thick piece of fry bread. But it wasn't bad at all and the toppings were great! The meat had a chili taste to it, savory and the kidney beans are my favorite thing to add. A great amount of cheese and loads of sour cream. I should have asked for salsa but it slipped my mind. Over all the taco was exceptional and I -almost- ate all of it! Today, the Lumpia and the Taco were fantastic. I can't wait to go back to try the Kahula Pork and Spam Musubi, or whatever their special is that day because they always have great specials! read more

I'm from out of town so I don't know what else is in the Reno area for Hawaiian food. The place is bare-bones decor - which is what I'm used to for Hawaiian plate lunch, so that's fine. The service was friendly- one woman greeted me with what felt like a real smile on the way in, and the woman who served me was equally welcoming. I had poke and spam musubi. Both were good and reminded me of meals I had in Hawaii. I'm in Reno a couple times a year and am glad to know of this place. read more

OMG!! I am still raving about the food we got from here. It is by far the BEST Hawaiian Food in the Reno-Sparks area! While it is a little bit of a drive it is so worth it. Not to mention the servings are large. Chicken Teriyaki was so delicious I almost wish I had ordered this myself. However, it was my daughter's meal. It was the best Teriyaki I have ever eaten in the Reno-Sparks area. The smoke and the flavor were so on point. It will make your mouth water. The rice and macaroni salad are also delicious. The Kaluha Pork is super tasty and by far the best I have ever eaten. I think it tasted better than the Kaluha Pork I had when I was in Hawaii. The smoke flavor and bark on the pork were so tasty. There was so much food that I had leftovers the next day. I added BBQ sauce to it and put it on some dinner rolls. It was so delicious and tasty. My husband asked why I was ohing and aging. So I made him a little sandwich. He had the same reaction and oh'ed and ah'ed. If you love Hawaiian food I highly suggest this place. Not to mention, the owners are super kind. Our family just moved by this restaurant and we were so excited to try it! Well, what a horrible disappointment we had!! The only thing that was half decent was the banana lumpia... my husband ordered a Teri burger, peach mango wings and banana lumpia for us to try. The burger was awful, dry and absolutely no teriyaki sauce! Basically just a bun, burnt burger patty and a couple sad pieces of canned pineapple! Oh and the Mac salad was horrible, dry and only tasted of onion! Not like traditional Hawaiian Mac salad we have had before... The wings were fresh but nothing spectacular, wouldn't order again. Hawaiian food is one of the true culinary joys in this world, being soul food so rich and heavy that it's a wonder those islands don't sink into the sea from the shear weight of all the good stuff in these dishes. We know Aloha Shack as a long-time local food truck, and with their new brick-and-mortar location on Red Rock Road, they bring another much-needed addition to the food scene in the North Valleys. The menu is not ultra-expansive, but covers all the big hitters of what you'd expect. A lot of typical island favorites, along with things like Poke Boles, burgers, wings, and nachos to sort of round things out. This visit I went with a combo plate of Kalua Pork and Chicken Katsu, with a piece of Spam Musubi on the side, and some dessert. The food was quite good indeed, with the Kalua Pork being especially spectacular, honestly some of the best I can remember having. The Katsu was delightful, and they make a really dang good macaroni salad, too. The Musubi was fine, but could maybe stand a bit more seasoning or sauce. And the Banana Lumpia was a delightful treat to finish off the evening. As far as portion-to-prices go, they are pretty darn decent here. The combo platter and sides together, maybe about $20 worth of food, was more than enough for two people, or to have leftovers for the next day. Like all Hawaiian food, these dishes go a long way in filling you right up, so I think you get a really great bang for your buck. Maybe a couple items on the menu are a tad pricey, but overall I think this is a definite value establishment. As far as service goes, this is an exceptionally friendly joint, one of the friendliest I've encountered, in fact. Glad to see the friendly island spirit has taken root here in the high desert. They also are good about serving up orders in quick order, no doubt owing to them honing their skills in the fast-paced food truck scene. Most importantly these days, they are remaining OPEN during this period of mass closures due to Covid. They are available for takeout and delivery, and make it very easy to get in and out without any hassle at all. It is so great to see local businesses soldiering on during these difficult times, and I will for sure give Aloha Shack a huge recommendation for anyone in the North Valleys who wants some grub which is almost the epitome of comfort food. My wife and I came here about noon on a Friday for our weekly lunch date. We had heard good things about this place and had it on our radar for a couple of months. We walked in and could see this is a place where you walk up to the counter, check out the menu board, place your order, have a seat and they bring it out to you. It is located in small strip mall and the inside was very basic with about 15 tables or so spread between the counter and front door. Roughly a quarter of them were occupied when we arrived. We perused the menu for a short time before making our selections. My wife ordered the Teri Chicken which comes with white rice and a choice of macaroni salad or cabbage slaw. She chose the macaroni salad. I could not resist trying the BBQ pork mac and cheese. We also decided to try the shack tots appetizer with cheese and BBQ sauce. We asked how long they had been there and were told about three months. We were told that they used to be a food truck before opening the restaurant. We then filled our drinks from the fountain, had a seat and waited. We checked the place out a little and discovered their trophies for wings. Apparently, they do pretty well with wings because we saw multiple trophies displayed. Good to know! The shack tots were brought to our table first. My first thought was that my wife would not like the melted cheese because it appeared to be from a can, but she tried a few and as I expected left the rest for me. The entrees arrived shortly after and looked really good. My wife enjoyed and finished her chicken. I worked on the BBQ pork mac and cheese and it was good but I had too much of the shack tots. The mac in the mac and cheese seemed over done and broke up really easy but it was still tasty. The pork had nice flavor and was pulled nicely. Overall it was good experience and we enjoyed the food. The one drawback for us was the price. It was about $40 for two including tip. read more

The tuna tastes fresh and the creaminess and spice of the wasabi is just right. Still amazing food and great service. Just a PSA about their Square payment service. Usually when you leave a tip, the tip is based on the subtotal (pre-tax). I have noticed that when you use their quick buttons (15%, 20% or 25%) to leave a tip that Square is calculating the total bill for the tip. For example, my last bill was $14.50 sub total + 1.20 tax and I hit the 20% button for the tip, which calculated the tip to be $3.14. The tip should have been based only on the sub total (food only) and should have been $2.90. Sure it's only $0.24, but that adds up. Still love this place and eat here at least once a week for lunch. I've been hearing about this place for a long time, all kinds of rave reviews. So we decided to try it tonight for my birthday. Bad idea. The ice machine was broken, they were giving us ice from a bag in the back. I could normally let that go because stuff happens. But what was unacceptable was the nearly half hour wait for food. Hubby went to find out what the delay was, they were waiting on the noodles. Huh? Since when does it take 30 minutes to cook noodles? I finally approached the counter to find out if this kind of delay was normal, I could plan for it if/when we return. I was getting hangry and irritated. Several of them shuffled about, looked at the ticket, shuffled some more, looked at me, the grill, more shuffling. No answer. What? Are you mute? I asked again and the gal at the register says, "I didn't know it would take that long." We would've left then if we hadn't already paid. Finally the cook approaches the table to tell us our noodles were sent out with some to go order and they'd have to make more. 2 more minutes. No apology, no % off the ticket or any kind of incentive to return, nada. Not even a smile for the customers. Nothing. By the time the noodle bowl arrived the rest of the food was barely warm. As was our drinks, the meager ice they gave us had melted and watered everything down. Yuck. The food was just mediocre. None of us were impressed, it was bland. I'm guessing that's standard for Hawaiian BBQ because L&L serves the same bland food. I can make better at home and I'm no expert. We won't return. If the food was good, maybe, but the crummy way they treat customers is not worth trying again. Thanks for the bad birthday dinner, Aloha Shack. How anyone likes this place is beyond me. ETA: upon looking at the website, the cook who sent out our noodles was actually the owner. That makes it worse. Not the mistake, I get that, we're only human.
