    Cutest growlers ever!
    Kristin K.

I came to Alley Kat Brewery for the first time this week to attend their Fall Launch Party and boy oh boy was it a treat! I saw many familiar faces from previous events Alley Kat had served at including the fabulous Kristin :-) What's not to love about my beer name doppleganger who also loves kats and wears kat prints? MeOwSeRs!!! I digress... Alley Kat was warm and inviting from the moment we arrived at 5PM. They had freshly made soft pretzels on hand along with cheese and meat nibbles to compliment the launch. Now, let's get to the good stuff... The BEER! Hubby and I were on cloud 9 that our favourite Alley Kat Beer - Freshly Squeezed (with real grapefruit) was still on tap and EVEN BETTER they had 4 packs of it for sale! Our local liquor store only had it in a combo pack but this was like finding a giant bag of your favourite one of a kind Jelly Belly Flavours - Yes, kids... Freshly Squeezed is that good! ( And Yay! It keeps getting better! Just checked out their webiste: www.AlleyKatBeer.com and noted: The Summer Squeeze Grapefriut Ale has taken Alberta beer drinkers by storm. You've been enjoying it so much that it is here to stay. Our Summer Squeeze has become our Main Squeeze. With the inclusion of Grapefruit into our core line up we will be discontinuing the seasonal six pack. ) The launch party was held to feature their fall releases: Alley Kat's Dragon Series Alley Kat brews their Double IPA Dragon Series for hop fans. A new single hopped Double IPA will be released every two months using a different hop variety and sold under a different color of dragon. Current Dragon: Maroon Dragon Release date: October 1st Hop Variety: Centennial Alley Kat is back on the Dragon train with Maroon Dragon DIPA. This Centennial hopped double IPA has floral and citrus aroma with notes of light malt and loads of citrus hop. Brewed in limited quantities so get yours before its all gone! I will admit that I'm usually a wine and girly girly drinker so the Maroon Dragon was completely out of my league. But my fellow drinkers assured me that it was an excellent man's beer - SUPER HOPPY! Do you think they will release an Easter Bunny Hop? Bahahaha! Okay, I'll stop ;-) And my favourite of their Fall Releases: Alley Kat's Big Bottle Series As a way of celebrating great tasting beer, Alley Kat's own Big Bottle series is a toast to all brewmasters and lovers of ale, alike. Cheers, and drink up! Current Big Bottle: Pumpkin Pie Spiced Ale Release Date: Sept 2, 2013 September marks the return of Alley Kat's Pumpkin Pie Ale. This delicious full-bodied beer is infused with pumpkin, ginger and cinnamon. Pumpkin Pie Spiced Ale is like the Fall season personified! And the big bottle packaging is cute and the perfect accompaniment to bring to your Thanksgiving dinner next week! So go snag a few bottles and treat the Beer Lovers in your life to a fabulous limited edition treat! While at the Launch Party we got to partake in a fabulous Brewery tour where I learned that Alley Kat is the oldest microbrewery in Alberta at the tender age of 19 and the 4th oldest Brewery in Alberta. They use recycled bottles boys and girls... That's right, feel good and green when you support your local Kat! Alley Kat also recycles it's spent grains into cattle feed and does their best to use all local and West Coast ingredients! Yay Alley Kat! You've got a friend in me :-) I can't wait to see what will be re-released for Christmas or what new creation you will come up with? Perhaps a Holly Hops? PS - Bring Back CRINGER (Cranberry Ginger)!

I bought some beer for a party and wanted to keep it local. Alley Kat was my first choice. I didn't realise how close to Old Strathcona the brewery is, what a pleasant surprise! I drove into the industrial estate and the girl serving remembered me from my previous enquiry, which was really nice. It wasn't quiet! The phone was ringing and there was a constant flow of customers buying beers and filling up their returned growlers. It's great to see they are popular! What really caught my eye (aside from the amazing Ally Kat hats they sell) was the tasting bar. So cute! A perfectly sized bar to sample all the different beers on tap and find your favourite. They also do brewery tours but I was on the clock and had just missed that last your of the day by 10 mins. I'll definitely return for the tour and bring some out of town visitors. The beer! I'd previously only tried the Aprikat beer which is really light and tasty. I got a variety for the group and everyone enjoyed, but the Summer Squeeze was the most in demand. It's simply, summer in a bottle! Grapefruity goodness for all. My new tipple!

There's no doubt about the fact that I'm a beer fan. Or maybe even a beer fanatic. Oh sure, I may have the odd dalliance with a cosmo, and I always savour a sweet rose. But beer will always be one of my first and greatest loves. And even better than cold one? A locally brewed cold one! Alley Kat brews a few different variations, including my favourite, the Aprikat (an apricot wheat ale) or my close-second-favourite, the Full Moon (a pale ale). Not only is the beer good, but Alley Kat is all about awesome events like food tasting and - gasp! - chocolate tastings. Ladies, if the beer itself doesn't convince you to go visit the brewery, surely that will!

Alley Kat is just wonderful! A small Edmonton craft brewery that is a big, big part of making Edmonton the awesome place that it is! The staff is all phenomenal; knowledgeable fun, beer loving lot that all really care about the product they are making. The beer, wow, so good. And, I'm not the biggest beer drinker (I know, for shame) but that just goes to show how good it is: Even I like (most) of their luscious liquids! I went down for the launch party of the new summer brew, the Grapefruit Summer Squeeze, I loved it! I also fell head over heals for the Baltic Porter, rich, deep, creamy with caramel notes. Yummy! While there I did the short and sweet brewery tour which was fun and informative! It was cool seeing how they make it, the methods that go into brewing beer as well as learning awesome facts like: 100% of the bottles used are all recycled! Gotta love the Green initiative! Also, they do not use any artificial preservatives: shorter shelf life of six months, but much better product! But my favourite Alley Kat fact: Their beer is quite popular in South Korea! Ya, who knew!! So next time you need to grab a few beers for the weekend, skip the liquor store, drop into Alley Kat, have a taste of what's on tap and get your beer right from the source!

Waiver is electronic so bring your phone. We did the Whyte/Happy Beer Street Tour that spends about half of the tour on Whyte Ave and the other half touring the quieter Happy Beer Street. This tour is 2 hours long and stops at 2 different venues - we stopped at Community and O'Byrne's Irish Pub. Was super awkward going down Whyte ave. People pointing and laughing and taking our pictures. If you don't like the attention sit on the bike's right (right hand closer to the front of the bike). Community was a let down as the bike's guide raved about the pizza-by-the-slice but when we got there at 5:30PM they said they had NO pizza ready and since we had only 30minutes at the stop they would Not be able to make it in-time for us :( O'Byrne's Irish Pub was fine but by then we were just working on finishing the drinks that were pre-bought with the bike (30drink package) and did not want to spend more money on drinks. It was +25degrees when we started but cooled nicely by 7PM but we were all a sweaty mess by then. Confirmed you should not wear flip flops as you do have to pedal and you want steady feet. i think there was 4 pedal spots per side and 1 per side that is over the wheel that does Not pedal and a bench at the back of the bike for non-pedaling people as well. 30 drink package was about right for the 12 of us as approx. 3 of us were driving. Great variety of drinks they offered from lager (no name-brands), cherry almond vodka cocktail, vodka lemonade, hard iced tea. And of course free water via water bottles. Every person (except the bench at the back) has a cup holder and the organizer of my event made and brough those yeti cups personalized with our names and those fit fine in the cup holders too and we just poured the cans in those. You can bring a small bag/purse and they can put it up "in the rafters" can give it to you every stop as well. Overall a really cool experience and I am sure I will be back.

I've always found that high quality road bike rentals are extremely rare to find, so this was a welcome service for me in Edmonton. In fact, this may be the only outfit providing road bike rentals in the city. Ben was highly professional and quick with leading me through the rental process. He went above and beyond my expectations, going out of his way to facilitate the pickup and drop-off as well. He also swapped out the standard pedals included with the rental bike with my own clipless set. The bike itself was a Felt Z95 and was in excellent condition. It included a tool bag, spare tube and pump that (thankfully) I never had to use! If you've never checked out the streetcar for fun, you need to plan for it this summer! Perfect addition to an afternoon at the Strathcona Farmer's Market! Cool details from the Wiki page on it: The High Level Bridge is a bridge that spans the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Located next to the Alberta Legislature Building, the bridge linked the separate communities of Edmonton and Strathcona, which became one city in 1912. It was designed from the outset to accommodate rail, streetcar, automobile and pedestrian traffic. The bridge was designated a Municipal Historic Resource in 1995. The Canadian Pacific Railway, responsible for the design of the bridge, ceased rail operations over the span in 1989. The upper deck contains only one track now, which is currently used only by the High Level Bridge Streetcar, a historic streetcar route that travels from the Strathcona Streetcar Barn & Museum, just north of the Strathcona Farmers Market, in Old Strathcona, to Jasper Plaza south of Jasper Avenue, between 109 Street and 110 Street, in downtown, with three intermediate stops.

Amy and Rick from Barr Estate winery do a fantastic tour! 2…read moreacres of raspberry's- 3 weeks of raspberry picking- can you imagine?! They need 2400 lbs for their wine. And the rhubarb and raspberries are hand picked. The Cherry's are harvested with a harvester and it sounds like quite an interesting piece of equipment. They are considered a cottage winery so they can only make wine out of what they can grow. Go local! They only use the juice from their fruits and never the pulp of the fruit so they use a fruit press. Takes 4 weeks to get everything pressed. And the pulp- well it all goes to the sheep. And the sheep do their thing. The compost goes back out in the fields this completing the circle of life. Rhubarb and raspberry only have enough sugar to get the wine to about 4% so they add more sugar to get the wine up to 12%. They do a cool fermentation that takes 42 days. Takes longer for the yeast to eat all the sugar and at the end there is no sugar left. So they sweeten the wine back up. They filter their wine 4 times and they also filter with a high quality filter at the very end that filter sterilizes their wine. Since they do that they don't have to add sulphites to their wine. So cool! No herbicides or pesticides out in the field and they don't want to use harsh chemicals in the wine process. Their goal is 12000 bottles of wine a year, 3000 of each of the three flavours. But they have a Cherry Port coming soon and we can't wait to try it! Check out their discounted tour deal on Groupon too!

Winter tours involve a complete explanation of the wine making process from picking the fruit to bottling the wine. Each step and the tools involved are explained along the way. There is a very organic flow of how the presentation comes together, like you're being sped through the entire process, which normally takes months. The winter tour goes into depth over the science behind how the wine comes together, the choices they made as a "cottage winery" and how they came to produce such a nice product. They will only produce 4 wines in as many bottles as the harvested fruit will make, they have to use whatever they can grow on their land and they keep all of their ingredients and processes as simple as possible to retain the flavor of the fruit in their wines. Seems simple but it's very cleverly thought out in its own complicated way. If any part of their process changed they wouldn't be able to make the wines they make, it's that simple. "The Barb" is a rhubarb red wine. Very light in body and flavorful. The colour resembles a rosé, it has a light finish with the slight bitterness of rhubarb on the tongue. That was our first sample. "The Ruby" is a rhubarb strawberry red that feels very substantial. Strawberry smells fill the room when you're holding a glass and there's a crisp bite to this wine with a sweet strawberry finish. It leaves you wanting another sip, making this wine an insidious guest at your next party that wants to stay and cause trouble ;). This was my favorite. "The Other Red" is made with raspberry. I'm not a huge fan of sour tastes, this one was a bit tart, has strong body and lots of interesting flavours. After talking with Rick, the idea of adding a wine in oak barrels, or even better in of oak whiskey barrels, would transform this wine (an idea they are toying with) but it was a bit too sour for me. "The Jewel" is a soon-to-be-released fortified wine coming out in May 2018 that has me very excited. I want able to taste that one yet because it's still in production. You are able to buy directly from Barr Estate, just call or text if you want one or two bottles and they'll accommodate you. There have been some events held on their grounds, which would make for a very interesting reception venue, unlimited boutique wines made 100 feet away? Heck yeah. Go for the Groupon, get the tour. Warm weather tours involve seeing the orchards, sheep, Alpaca, the dogs and the beautiful rustic farm. Cherry blossoms come out for a week, book your tour then and you'll get an unforgettable stroll through all the cherry trees with white fragrant flowers... Seriously, they run groupons all year long for the tours, winter groups are usually under 5 or 6 people, summer tours are 20+.

After arrival to the Rutherford House (the meeting place) it was soon apparent that there were only going to be the two of us, plus Nadine who was our tour guide. Nadine had no issues going with a small group. The atmosphere of the night, which started at 9PM, could not have been spookier as it was pitch black, and the wind was howling. It was like we had the whole campus to ourselves as few, if any, students were seen that night. We learned a lot about the U of A's history, with lots of interesting trivia. Nadine, was very personable and had a lively sense of humor. She was easy to hear and spoke very clearly. After this experience I will never look at the U of A the same way ever again. The stories were indeed spooky, and I find myself reflecting on the content a day later. There probably won't be many tours like this one left this year, but I encourage anyone to sign up for this when Nadine sets up shop again in the New Year. Overall, my friend and I had a great time despite the chilly weather. The tour was well worth the price of admission. I look forward to trying out other, different ghost tours with Nadine in the future.
