FUN!!! Tried out a Segway yesterday for the first time with a group of 6 awesome Yelpers for a mini group lesson as part of Yelp's Club Fit! We had three instructors/helpers who were all super friendly and helpful! The scenery simply could not be best against the majestic Edmonton river valley! I totally need to come back for one of the hour long tours! They even offer winter snow tours complete with winter tires ;-) In the summer they rent out other items like bicycles and also have BBQ's. I had some friends visiting from California, one of whom had pulled a back muscle recently and couldn't do any strenuous exercise. So I came across the segway tours offered by the River Valley Adventure Co and they seemed like a perfect, gentle outing that would let my friends see a bit of the river valley without too much outdoor walking or anything too tiring! They have a beginners and an advanced tour (beginners is for people who've never ridden a segway before) and they provide training before the tour starts to make sure everyone's comfortable on the segways. You have to wear a helmet (bicycle style) just in case of falls, they provide these and wash them between uses, or I imagine you could bring your own if you have one. Our visit was in early January and the temperature was about -8C, so it was cool but not terrible (for me) and just about as cold as my Californian friends were able to accept without running back inside screaming. I warned them to bundle up with thermal leggings, lots of layers, scarves, hats that would fit under the helmet, and mittens, and they somehow survived the tour without freezing! I'd never been on a segway before but they're really easy to use and I was surprised by how much fun they are - let's face it, they look a little silly when you see someone else using one, but when you're driving one yourself, they're actually a ton of fun! We zoomed along the river valley, pausing a couple times to look at the funicular, the old Edmonton fort that is now a government building, and to go across a bridge and admire the view and the ice sheets. They do other tours, including a nighttime tour of the Christmas lights around the legislative assembly building while the displays are up. They also have a little cafe inside the building, so if you want to warm up with a coffee or tea afterwards you can. The tours are typically 60 or 90 minutes, out and then back again, plus up to 30 minutes training time if needed (we didn't need that long). It was definitely lots of fun, a great way to see more of the river valley than we would otherwise have managed, and a nice thing to do in winter provided the weather's not TOO cold (if it's below -10C I'd suggest heated warming pads in the toes, and maybe windproof leggings/ski suit as you may be going up to 20 km/h). I will definitely recommend this to other visitors and plan to take my parents (now in their late 70s) to do this when they come and visit. read more

Driving the Segway was so cool! It's like nothing you have ever tried. You feel like you will fall but this smart machine makes you move! The weather changed on us and it was cold, but that didn't stop us. We were able to do a session and learn how the Segway worked. It's pretty incredible the way these work, I think it would be a cool outing with a group to do a tour down the boardwalk. A cool idea here is that this Segway shop is right in the river valley and has a nice little coffee shop. You can grab a snack here and they have a little patio here as well so you can kick back and soak up some sun next time you are swinging by. They also have bicycle rentals here too & snowshoes in the winter! Chris the owner was a nice guy and for $49 for an hour that's pretty reasonable to get out there on a $7000 machine for an hour. I recently did the Segway tour as a last minute tag along with coworkers immediately after work and was able to book online on the day of the session. I was even able to apply an online coupon code too! It's really easy to find the location, and parking was decent. Their base location makes a great pit stop for a snack if you are strolling through Louise McKinney Park. They support local, so you can find familiar local brands in their product offerings and there's indoor and outdoor seating available. Checking in was super easy too as they only asked for your reservation name & signing the waiver/ demographic sheet was pretty easy too. A tip, when picking a helmet, pick one from the cubby wall as those have been cleaned. I'm really impressed with the thoroughness in their safety training and Segway use orientation. It's easy to understand, and our instructor was well paced and mindful of our beginner skills. He definitely made it a pleasant time and was very informative about Edmonton's river valley history which blew me away since I had no idea about a lot of those things (and I've lived in Edmonton all my life)! Our instructor was also willing to take photos of us along our route at a few scenic spots too which was much appreciated, and he was extra careful with verbal instructions to ensure we had no mishaps along the way. I'm glad I opted for the hour long tour though because one of my legs were starting to cramp (I think it's more from my user end- since I was tensed) and I'm glad there was a mini break included since it's common for heels to tend to tingle or get sore around that time point. I enjoyed this experience & I'm glad I learned how to use a Segway. It's a really fun tourist attraction that I'd recommend to tourists & locals alike! read more

Why walk when you can effortlessly glide? The segway experience is so much fun! Initially, I was a bit terrified for my life until I realized that it's pretty difficult to fall off of one of these well-designed machines. The instructors were very reassuring and trained us in all aspects of segway-ing. Even moving at a turtle's pace was fun; imagine hitting top speeds! I think the segway tour is a great way to enjoy the beautiful river valley. Definitely a fun group or date idea. In the summer, you can also rent bikes from here. There's a little coffee shop inside, called Urban Green, that serves Intelligentsia coffee and the usual cafe fare. You can sip your drink and enjoy the view from their riverfront patio! read more

The team there set us up with helmets and had us understanding the basics within minutes. They were kind, patient and described the movements very well! Though easy, this activity uses muscles you're not used to using! It was a fun way to try something new! I had the opportunity to try out the Segways a few times now and we always have a great time on them. They give you a short learners course to teach you the basics of using the Segway. It really isn't that hard to learn so don't let that stop you if you are a bit nervous. Within a few minutes the staff will get you going on the basics of these high-tech machines. I would highly recommend this company and I am looking forward to trying them again. They also rent bikes and I saw some fishing rods too! River Valley Adventure is a great company located right in the river valley near the public restrooms in the park. It is easy to get to on foot from the Shaw or the multi-use trails. Not only do they sell yummy refreshments (like beverages, baked goods, and ice cream!), but they offer bike rentals and Segway tours. Recently I did a mini group lesson Segway tour which was way more fun than my first time riding a Segway because this way I got proper instruction as to how to ride the thing safely rather than trying to figure it all out on my own. River Valley Adventure Co. (RVA) is best known for their Segway Guided Tours, but they also offer rentals of equipment including bikes, fishing gear, balls & assorted games, as well as offer corporate packages, and run a small concession on weekends called 'Urban Green Cafe'. They are also an authorized Segway dealer and sell other products similar to traditional Segways, such as "hoverboards". Depending on the time and day, parking at Louise Mckinney Park can be challenging, and now that the foot bridge is closed, there's one less option for access to the area - Another blow to this business, dealt by the foot bridge closure, is that some of the tours used take you across the bridge... which was possibly one of the coolest tours they had available. I haven't purchased anything from the cafe myself, but I did notice that they offer a good assortment at reasonable prices, which I think is a pleasant surprise given their convenient location, and would definitely keep them in mind. As for the tours themselves... I've been on two Segway guided tours with RVA now, and I have to say, the experience gets better with practice. I thought my first tour was fun and unique, but slightly stressful because I didn't feel like I was getting the hang of it at first, and the instructor's style is not one that communicates well with me. I'm not saying the instructor that I had was bad, just that his style of instructing did not mesh with my style of learning. And I found that the breakdown in communication left me a bit on edge. By the end of the tour I was a little tense and body parts cramped a little, though I'd finally got the hang of it, and at that point found the instructor to be a personable tour guide. As for the second tour, I gave it another chance 'cause I knew that if I'd retained what I'd learned the first time, the second time around would be all gravy. And this was absolutely the case! My partner and I snickered a little when we witnessed other newbies experience the same anxiety I did that first time - not because they were experiencing it, but because I hadn't made it up. Noting right away that I was at ease, having found my 'Seglegs' pretty much immediately, I zipped along and had a wonderful time. With my 'Segway Operator License' (earned with one's first tour) in hand, and my seglegs never lost, I can absolutely see myself back for more tours... especially because the license doubles as a loyalty card: complete 5 tours and get a 6th free! Groupons have been available, but they also offer a free tour on your birthday (obviously confirm that this is still available before and/or check their website for details) - so there are many ways for this to develop into an affordable hobby. They ask that we notify them when booking if we are 'advanced' riders, so that they book the tour groupings accordingly, so that those who are familiar with the basics don't waste too much time waiting for everyone to get caught up. I strongly feel that River Valley Adventure Co. is a strong asset for our city. The river valley itself is one of Edmonton's most wonderful features, and RVA advocates for it quite strongly and it's services are a fantastic resource for the area. read more

This was a hoot (literally!). Mike was a rockstar teacher and we "listened" very well. All 6 of us learned to move forward, backward, side to side and 360°in less than 15 minutes. Also how to safely get on and off our Segways. Our class was a special little taste of the activity thanks to YELP, whereas this company's tours take you further afield to discover the gorgeous river valley area nearby. Into Louise McKinney park past the ever expanding Chinese garden, the rose garden and along the walkway lined with trees that overlooks the North Saskatchewan river. Further for a bit more $ and time if you like! As a senior (55+) this is a terrific way to explore the river valley, strengthen my core and challenge my balance just a wee bit, while I enjoyed the fresh air and the sights! read more

I have been a fan of the River Valley Adventure company for a few years now. I was able to first experience them in West Edmonton Mall when I bought a friend a tour package for his birthday. Safety is a big deal with this company. They will teach you all the ins and outs of the Segway and how it works. It was really cool to be able to roam the mall with the Segways and let them open up (as much as you can with a limiter) on the straight stretches. Now they are located in the River Valley of Edmonton near Emily Murphy park. After you get your "license" session completed, you are able to take more advanced tours through our beautiful, scenic river valley. They aren't just about the Segways though, you can rent bicycles and fishing poles as well. We had a great experience at River Valley Adventure as part of Yelp Fit. Not only does this place have the super fun segways, but they also are a great resource and place to stop at always in Louis McKinney Park as they have ice cream, coffee, other rentals (think games, two seater bike) and so much more. It's in a great location and with the washrooms in the same vicinity, it really makes for a great pit spot as you're enjoying the park. And these rentals help you enjoy the park space even more. The staff were energetic, knowledgeable and extremely welcoming. They were great teachers as they got everyone comfortable on the segways and they worked well both with larger groups (seven in ours) and smaller groups as well. After getting a taste of what they offer and what it's like to be on a Segway, we will definitely be back to experience a full hour on the Segway (only $40!) and to grab a snack along the way! read more

It's not every day you get to try out a Segway at no cost! We had the chance to test these smart wheels out during the first Yelp Fit Club event and it was so much fun. I was a bit nervous at first because I wasn't sure what to expect, but Chris and crew take their time showing you how to use the machines safely while still having fun. It was more of a crash course they gave us for the Yelp event to give us an idea of what it's like, and now I am definitely coming back with friends this summer. Tried out the segways at River Valley Adventure for the first time today! It was a BLAST--and we didn't even take the tour. Thanks to yelp, we got a little taste of how the segways work and learn how to ride them. Before riding a segway, I was always under the impression that they were pretty boring to ride and just something that transports you around the river valley--the river valley would definitely be the best part; however, now that I've actually ridden on a segway, I take that back! Riding the segways is fun in itself--the tour of the river valley would simply be a huge bonus on top of that! The only downfall? It seems like it would be a little pricey as tours start at $49.99 (stated on a brochure I picked up). Not sure what that would all include but that seems a little much for me! I'm on the fence deciding whether paying that much would be worth it--it WAS really fun so maybe it would be worth it! You'd have to decide for yourself! Nervous about riding a segway? Don't be. They're really easy to learn. The guys at River Valley Adventures take the time to make you feel really comfortable on them! One of my friends who is REALLY clumsy even had fun on them--pretty sure anyone could ride them! I should also add you can ride the segways in the winter! I think that would be a really cool thing to do outside during the winter seeing as lots of people complain about not many things to do during the winter! read more

We have nothing but good things to say about our experience renting mountain bikes at River Valley Adventure Co. The service was friendly and efficient, the bikes were nice and in good condition and the value for our money was terrific. We would highly recommend a bike ride along the river as a great activity for family, friends or individuals at any level of fitness...ok hard core riders might want something a little hillier or more technical but for the rest of us, it is an awesome way to explore the oasis of nature in the concrete jungle that is downtown edmonton. read more
