The volunteer conductors dress up and give you a history lesson of a time when Edmonton and Strathcona were 2 different cities. We had a pleasant time riding the old timey streetcar across the high level bridge. The cost was only $7 round trip, and the view of downtown and the river valley was one of the best Edmonton has to offer. You get a leisurely ride in a 75-year-old streetcar and can get off to explore old town Strathcona, the Provincial Legislature buildings, and downtown all in one excursion. So glad they have events on the street car. It means you are guaranteed to get on the train for one thing but it's pretty special. I went on one of the cocktail events with s friend. They have a start time but it left a lot later than that which meant less time on board so I dropped a star for that. And they forgot the music. But quite honestly, hanging on the train above the north Saskatchewan River, drinking gin cocktails and taking in those stunning views of the sunset over the river valley it spectacular in itself. The music would just have been a nice addition. I'd still go for a regular ride on this and that's fun with little kids. But if it's for adults, I say do one of the summer events. You still get the history of the car but it's more of an experience. read more

It's well worth a ride on the streetcar on a beautiful day. While it can be booked for special events (and you can see the sunset from atop the High Level Bridge that way) the easiest way to ride is by simply buying a ticket from the conductor on your way to the Strathcona Farmer's Market, the Fringe or simply taking the trip for the fun of it. I like to use the streetcar at least once or twice a year on average. It's run by the Radial Railway Society which is a group of volunteers who drive the trains. Yes there is no air conditioning and the frequency of arrival is limited, but in Edmonton a ride up and down the high level bridge street car is a must. If you want to travel to Strathcona from downtown besides bicycle, this is a very cool way to do it! Not only do you get a sense of history here, the view is amazing as you cross the river and disappear into the tunnel and trees. Taking the high level streetcar is a must if you are in Edmonton during the summer. You will get a beautiful view of the river valley and hear some local history along the way too. There are a few different ones running at a time so you should be able to take a different one on each way of your trip. This last trip we took they had an Australian and a Japanese streetcar. They are run by volunteers who are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about each cars history. A small museum was just opened at the Strathcona stop. We like to go on Saturday's as it stops right by the Strathcona farmers market. Durning the Fringe festival there will be more frequent and late trips. I would have loved to give the Streetcar a 5 star rating simply because it's such a romantic concept. For me, personally, it is perfect because the streetcar pretty much starts from my backyard in Old Strathcona and goes straight to 109th street and Jasper, making for an easy option to get to downtown. It's a beautiful building in which the Streetcars are parked overnight. A bit of history detailing the origins of the high level bridge and the individual streetcars that have been shipped here from various countries. The streetcar museum itself is worth a visit and would make for an awesome morning with the kids. In fact, on most occasions that I've been on it, I seem to be the only one without kids there. The usual crowd is the grandparents and grandchildren types, which makes for a cute and touristy setting. I don't mind pretending to be the tourist, so I would use it as a primary mode of transportation from Strathcona to downtown and back. The streetcar takes roughly 20 minutes to make it from Old Strath via Garneau to across the bridge and a halt at Grandin station before finally reaching the northside terminus at the back alley of Jasper and 109th Street. Among the 4 stops, the Garneau one is most hidden and really there isn't any bench or waiting area there - which is a tad disappointing. The fare is a meager $4 return or $2 one-way. I think it's a great way to go from the Old Strathcona market to the summer market at the city center. The major downside for me, though, is that you could end up waiting potentially for 40 mins to get the streetcar. In all the stops, there isn't sufficient waiting area and/or an easy resting stop, like a cafe. So you've got to pretty much stand next to the tracks wondering when the next car is going to come. Well, all things said though, they do have a timetable at each station and if you're diligent about it you can easily plan your day around the streetcar schedule. read more

Here's a neat little Edmonton attraction. For $3 one way/$6 round trip, you can ride between downtown and Old Strathcona on a vintage streetcar, crossing the High Level Bridge along the way. They will stop in the middle of the bridge for some photo op and skyline views of the city and river valley. The volunteer conductors seem up for a pose or two too. It's basically one short line with some intermediate stops in between, running on a posted schedule. The south end is at their streetcar museum where the farmers market is at. My main complaint would be the stops--especially the north downtown terminus--lack shady benches/shelter for waiting riders. You might be waiting in the sun a while, eh? read more

The Museum can take you back through time showing you some pictures of what Edmonton was like back in the day, how the society operates a streetcar located in the Strathcona streetcar barn on 103 street and 84 avenue next the Strathcona streetcar terminal. The museum is open 10 am - 2pm on Saturdays from May Long Weekend until Thanksgiving. A visit can be combined with a ride on the High Level Bridge Streetcar. (Entrance is free - donations are welcome) Average price to ride the HLBS is $5.00 roundtrip. While on the Streecar you will pass Jasper Avenue, Legislature Building, The "Tunnel", John Walter Museum, Fort Hill, C&E Station Museum, Farmers Market and the Strathcona Terminal. A great old way to get around the city, get a feeling on how things were done back in the day. The High Level Bridge Streetcar isn't necessarily a hidden gem among the city - I think a lot of people know about it, but not a lot of people have taken it. I can only say good - nay, great things about the HLBS. The trains themselves are super cool (and I think trains are boring), the conductor does his job, and the tour guide shows you all sorts of neat neighbourhood nooks with knowledge and humour. It's an awesome and cheap Saturday morning date idea. How cheap? Like, cheaper than taking the LRT! You can start downtown, train to the Strathcona market, then train home, or vice versa. You just can't beat the view from on top of the High Level Bridge! read more

I lived in Edmonton for a number of years before I took the streetcar for the first time. I assumed it was just one of those things tourists did, and I took it for the first time just to get from downtown to the Fringe site. I was surprised by how awesome the view was. Starting from just south of Jasper ave, between 109 and 110 st, it goes out across the top of the High Level bridge, for some pretty great views of the river valley. Then on the south side of the river, it goes through a quiet part of Strathcona before arriving just north of the Strathcona farmer's market. The whole trip is pretty quick, and it's great on a nice day when you get the breeze coming in the windows. The streetcars are all refurbished from different parts of the world, and they have little blurbs about their history inside. The volunteers that run the streetcars are very pleasant and can tell you a lot about the history of the cars and of Edmonton. I just wish they ran the Fringe schedule all summer. I actually use the streetcar for transportation across the river. The streetcar is open from the May long weekend to the September long weekend, and is $2 one way, $4 round trip. read more

I have had the pleasure of riding on the High Level Streetcar twice for the Edmonton Beer Geeks Anonymous (EBGA) On Rails events. The event is run by EBGA; therefore, it is a private rental of the streetcar for the event. The conductors, who are volunteers, are absolutely wonderful as they tell you facts about the streetcar, let you look out the front, open the bathroom in the museum (as there are no toilets on the streetcar FYI), and even let us store our bikes in the museum so they were out of the rain! The event itself consists of a ride on the street car to the middle of the top of the High Level. Then a cask if beer is opened and you celebrate with drinks on the too of the High Level! I would definitely check out any private events on the streetcar as well as going for a spin on the weekends. read more

The streetcar is lovely. From looking down at people from above, to the view of the river, to the graffiti tunnel you go through on the south side of the bridge, I try to ride it at least once a summer (and should really ride it more often). Not only is it quaint and a mini adventure, think about it: there is no other direct transit route from Old Strathcona to central downtown. That's so convenient! It stops right outside the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market, which is perfect for a Saturday afternoon ride. The only thing I'd dock it points for is that it doesn't run often enough, but I'm still giving it five stars for being so fun. Oh, and you can rent it for parties and watch the sun set over the North Saskatchewan River. Highly recommended! read more

Taking a ride on the High Level Streetcar is a summer ritual for me. There is no feeling like going over that 100 year old bridge from the south side to downtown and back. We had to run to catch this in time and the conductor was so sweet and waited for us so we didn't have to wait another 20 minutes. It's $6.00 for a round-trip ticket. The views are spectacular and you get a new angle of the city that you wouldn't get otherwise. I am really happy I waited until the fall to take this because seeing all the lovely colours was probably the best part. There's cool graffiti all along the walls of the tunnel and it drops you right at the farmers market if you're coming from downtown. If you have anyone visiting Edmonton while this is operating I would make it a point to take them. read more

I love the street car. The operators are always lovely and were especially accommodating when we took some of our engagement photos on it during the Fringe festival last year (2012). Whether you're visiting the city or have lived here your entire life, it's definitely worth a ride at least once. We wanted to go to the Farmers Market and decided rather than park in Old Strathcona, we would go over the High Level Bridge on the street car. As we pulled up to the Jasper Plaza stop and parked out car (parking is free on weekends!). Sadly, as we got out, the street car was leaving the station and we had to wait 40 min for it to return. Once we were on, it was a short, but beautiful, trip to the market. You pass by the Legislature Building and of course get a spectacular view of the river valley as you go over the High Level Bridge. The conductor told us that the tunnel we went through was the only one in Western Canada on the CP line. The stations at Jasper Park and Old Strathcona are kept very clean. Definitely will make this an annual trip. read more

This is probably one of the highlights of downtown Edmonton. The trip was quick but informative. To add to the excitement going top of the bridge was the hilarious narrator/conductor. Fascinating facts about the train and very much enjoyable no matter what age group you are. $6 was well worth it. We will come back for sure and try catch the other trains if we could. A fun way to travel from downtown to the heart of Whyte Ave. You take a old streetcar across the top track of Edmonton's iconic high level bridge. The view is exhilarating and a bit terrifying. The ride itself isn't very long but I recommend any residents of Edmonton or visitors to Edmonton try this experience at least once. I took 4 kids ranging from 5 to 10 on this ride and they had an excellent time. Ever summer they ask me "can we go for a trolley ride yet?". read more

Went on this car on a whim for the first time last year and it was pretty neat. I like how everything was kept old timey, even the conductors. It was a fun trip and cheap too but I wasn't really blown away. Might be because I drive on the bridge all the time and I'm not scared of heights. I think if I was scared of heights it'd be a blast. Or if it travelled 100 km/hr over the bridge. Whoosh! That'd be scary. Anyway, it's a great date ride and the trip takes about 20 minutes each way so you get your monies worth for sure. read more

This experience was terrible. I think a lot of people rank the ride with 5 stars, are ranking the attractions this train takes you to. If you're interested in not having to pay for parking to get to Alberta Parliament or other attractions, this train ride might be ideal. If you're taking the train, thinking it will be a 5-star experience, you will be disappointed. The conductors didn't have microphones, it didn't matter, there was no tour, no historical notes, nothing. You sat on the train, went through some backyards, to go over a river. I don't even know the name of the river. This ride was extremely disappointing. read more
