Visitor Centre entrance from west side of building
Dennis M.

My family and I went for a stroll to the Leg grounds just to get some fresh air. We stumbled upon the Visitor Information Centre which is north of the Leg building - in the newly renovated east federal building. Let me tell you what we found. My mind was blown and I had a perverted smile on my face for our 1.5 hours of venturing. This is what you do - take a look at the large living wall they have in the building, it's amazing. Take in the decor on the entrance way. It's really refreshing. Now walk up the stairs towards the Security desk and turn left. There will be a person sitting a chair in front of the Pehonan Theatre. Ask them what time the next show is, NOW GO TO THE SHOW!!! This 11 minute movie talks about the birth of Alberta. It will blow your f-ing mind and make you all patriotic. I am not giving any spoilers, when you walk in you might say "where the f is the movie screen' don't worry about it. Just open your mind and be MIND BLOWN. After I watched it, I was wanting more. It could have been a 30 minute show or 2 hours long. In fact I could have spent all day in there watching it. It was well produced and you will be wanting more. Now after you are done that, head into Alberta Branded. But keep your hands to yourself. The craftsmanship of goods is absolutely stunning. Now venture over to the Agora Interpretive Centre. This is where you will get some kick-ass history lessons on Alberta and immerse your mind with knowledge. You will leave there saying "I live in a fucking awesome province" Time will fly by, you will have fun and you will want to go back. I know I am heading back there again, soon. Oh ya, best part, it's all free. I say this is taxpayer money well spent. And one of the best kept secrets in Edmonton.

Alberta Legislature Grounds

I began to appreciate the Alberta Legislature Grounds again, when I worked in a building overlooking the area two summers ago. Me and other co-workers would sit on the grass for our breaks or go find a cozy bench to eat our lunch. The view is always beautiful, and it's very relaxing to be at least somewhat immersed in nature. The only thing I found unpleasant were the wasps that were either trying to get a bite of my lunch or a bite of me. There's always lots of people here, when it's hot and sunny. Some people wade in the pools and other people just lay on towels to get a suntan. I've seen quite a few older men, wearing nothing but a tiny speedo--they obviously have no shame. I have taken a lot of pictures here, and if you're into nature photos, this is a great place to snap some great shots. There's lots of vibrant flowers here, and the trees and fountains are nice too. Even the legislature building itself is beautiful enough to capture. I've gone inside as well and taken some very nice photos. Getting here is rather easy. There's lots of buses that stop near here, and Grandin LRT station takes you right up to the grounds.

A true Edmonton landmark. Great location, great views. Both beautiful in the evening and during the day, this is a great place to go for a walk during a date, or after dinner at Pampa for example. The Leg isn't just about the building, there's many little art instalments and multiple levels so you can walk up and down the hills and through the regular lawn. It's why it's one of the most photographed things in the city, often a backdrop for weddings, graduations, and general photo ops. Local magazines have also cheekily mentioned it's one of the more popular places for PDA, too. If you need a reminder that Edmonton can and does have amazing views, check out the Legislature grounds. Beautiful during the summer AND winter!

Beautiful Legislature Grounds during the Christmas season.

I love coming here all times of the year. In summer it is a great place to wade in the fountains, walk around the grounds, play a friendly game of ultimate frisbee, have a picnic or book a tour and get educated on Alberta's politics. In winter, during the holiday season, the legislature grounds are lit up with Christmas lights, Christmas music is playing, hot chocolate is served, choirs are singing and you can go skating on the man-made outdoor rink. It is quite lovely and I enjoy myself every time I go. A definite must see if you have never been. If you are interested in booking a private or classroom tour, please see the following link: https://www.assembly.ab.ca/visitor/tours_info.html

AB Legislature building lights up!

The grounds have always been beautiful and I've been many times. As a kid I adored the lawn bowling tournaments, the players looked so elegant and fashionable. As a young adult it was part of my neighbourhood walk. This year was the first time I've been for the Christmas official "light up". It's a lovely way to start the season, starting with the UofA mixed choir performing on the main staircase within the building. Very polished performance! Disappointed some people rudely chatted throughout, even when asked to be quiet. When so much work goes into perfecting this type of choral quality it's a shame some folks think it appropriate to draw attention away from the "star" attraction. The noise of the security machine was notable as well, but I'm grateful for the presence of the friendly efficient security staff. I understand these precautions now seem necessary. The old girl herself (our ABLeg building) looked quite posh in her winter regalia. And free hot chocolate & cookies, classic! Thanks to all the staff and volunteers who put such a great deal of effort into this event. The "light up" was a big treat. Thousands of bulbs painstakingly hung all along the boulevard with the stunningly tall Alberta spruce as the centerpiece. A warm welcoming invitation to everyone extended by the Speaker and Health minister. Nice way to kick off the Christmas Season.

Making of the Leg

Probably the nicest building and property in Edmonton. The Leg is quite welcoming with all its public grounds where people can hang out. I live two blocks away so when it gets hot in the summer, it's nice to come to the Leg and cool down by the wading pool. Since everyone is commenting on the property itself I want to talk about the free guided tour of the building that they offer everyday of the year except for Christmas, New Year's Day and Good Friday. I had lived here for three years and hung out at the Leg often but never took in the tour until my aunt and uncle were in town for a visit. I took them for the free tour on Father's Day around noon and we were the only ones participating at that time so it was like a private tour. A young lady, Laura, was an excellent hostess and guided us around the inside of the Legislature building with all sorts of historical anecdotes and insight. I could tell she enjoyed what she was doing and was genuinely interested in history herself. It was certainly appreciated that she was able to answer any questions we had. I would recommend this tour as it's free and won't take up too much of your day, about 45 minutes.

It was nice to be able to select our seats too. The washrooms were clean and there were enough stalls so no line up. The movie poster for our theatre was incorrect, so some people were in the wrong theatre. It was the first evening movie and the theatre was clean and ample leg room. The cup holder was a bit sticky but not bad. Another minor issue was the AC was blowing down throughout the movie and I had my hoodie as I usually get cold in theatres but it was still minor annoyance. Good theatre and would see a movie again here if I was downtown.

It shines of hope, hope for the future of where our city is going. To be bold enough to state that it not just Chicago, New York or Barcelona that is deserving of kooky, large scale installation art works. No, we are too. Just because we are small, we are north, we are cold, and yes we are the City Of Champions where hockey is religion, does not mean that we should be void of art or the arts. I applaud those involved for having the balls (pun intended, ha ha) to have brought this piece to Edmonton and to place it in the River Valley, not downtown. For there is more to see and do in Edmonton then within a 24 block radius. On my daily drive down the Whytemud I look forward to seeing the big shiny balls. Yes they are funny, they make me smile, they brighten my day, every day. They start conversation, create conflict and debate. They make us interact verbally with each other on their merit... They, well they do exactly what art is supposed to do. So to me they are worth every penny and are deserving of 5 glorious stars.

I get that art can be controversial. I get that not every piece of art is for everyone…read more My beef with the Talus Dome isn't about the sculpture itself. Sure I think it's a bit silly looking, but whatever. My opinion doesn't determine what's good art and what's bad art. And I don't know what it represents or what, but I could put out some general guesses, like snow, or mountains or the juxtaposition of Edmonton's blue collar roots and art culture, or whatever. How I feel and what I think about this piece isn't the issue. My problem with the Talus Dome is the placement. Why would anyone think it is a smart move to place a piece of giant, and distracting public art on the Quesnell Bridge on one of the busiest roads in Edmonton. Texting, applying making, playing candy crush, aren't these forms of distracted driving? Well yes, but we can also add the Talus Dome, a giant piece of blinding art to this list. The silver balls on this sculpture are reflective, so depending on when you're driving and where you're looking you'll need to shield your eyes. It's distracting and it's dangerous for drivers and pedestrians. I wonder how many people have said, ''but officer I couldn't help it, that shiny silver thing was distracting me." The placement of the art isn't good for either drivers on the Whitemud or pedestrians in the River Valley. There isn't any kind of place where you can stop and look at this piece of art as a driver. You can't exactly stop on the Whitemud...unless it's rush hour (Thank You! I'm Here All Night). You can drive down to Fox Drive where you can see the full statue, but again not really a good place to stop unless you park under the overpass. And then if you do, you still need to cross Fox Drive to stand on an overpass embankment to look at some silver balls. What? Look I'm not okay with damaging public art, as someone did recently. It just means that the art will need to be repaired, at a cost to the taxpayers. But maybe that vandalism is a sign, not that we should get rid of public art, but that we should move it to a place where it can be enjoy by people, and not be distracting to drivers, which is dangerous for everyone. Public Art is for the people right? So let's move this sculpture to a place where it can be enjoyed by people without being dangerous. It's either that or we need to start putting outrageous and weird art sculptures on every overpass and bridge in Edmonton, so it won't just be the Whitemud and Quesnell Bridge with distracting art. Then it'll just be visitors who are distracted by shiny silver balls and my next proposal for badly placed public art in Edmonton; a giant statue of Wolverine on the Anthony Henday overpass at Gateway Boulevard.
