Today was my birthday and my BF n I were going to go to Black Angus for dinner to celebrate. We both hadn't been there in a long time, so we were both looking forward to it.
We stopped at this local bakery that I had been to before, but my BF was not really familiar with this old, quaint part of town in Upland. I used to live on Euclid years ago, so it was nice to get re-aquainted with the area.
We were checking out that area to find a restroom and happened upon Cafe Allegro. I checked yelp and saw the reviews, so we took a chance and made reservations for later that night.
We got there about 25 mins early cuz traffic was not bad. We were checking out the menu on yelp before we went in. Everything looked and sounded so good, but we were both really hungry. We went in with an open mind and no expectations.
The ambiance and lighting was nice. We got greeted and seated right away. We perused the menu again. My BF played it safe with fetticini alfredo. I ordered from the specials. I had the pan-seared scallops in shrimp sauce with risotto and vegetables. It just sounded really good and different.
They gave us some bread while we waited for our food. My BF is a real bread guy. He normally likes just french or sourdough. The bread was warm n fresh. It ended up being i believe an olive bread. Crunchy on the outside n soft on the inside. Damn, that was amazing bread!! I could have eaten just that.
I love lemon drop martinis n thought I'd have one to celebrate. I have found over the years that no 2 places make them alike. So u never know what you're going to get. They offer a basil lemon drop here. OMG, that was the most unique and best tasting martini ever!!! Even tho my BF thought the basil was weird, he liked it too. I realized the basil made it a multi dimensional experience with the texture and flavor of the basil on top. It took it to another level.
The dinner came and I thought it had a lovely presentation. When I sliced into the perfectly seared scallops, you could see how they were shiny, juicy and glistening. I knew before I took that first bite that I would be in heaven. And my God.....I was.
My BF is not a seafood person, but after I told him it tasted like a juicy pc of steak, he took a bite. I could see on his face with every chew that he believed me. He said, wow you're right it does taste like steak. That was hugely satisfying to be right.....especially on my birthday. Lol
Anyway...where was I? I digress. After he tried the scallop I told him he needed to try the amazing risotto. Wow....the look on his face. He said...I could eat just that risotto. It was the best risotto I've ever had. The cauliflower, baby carrots and sliced zucchini were all cooked to perfection. Slighty al dente and glazed perfectly. I'm so not a veggie person and those too were fantastic.
With the risotto, scallops and veggies along with my martini and the bread, I was filling up quickly, but we wanted to save room to share a Creme Brule for dessert. We had mentioned to our waitress that we were celebrating my birthday and she brought the Brule with a candle to make a wish. It was on the house which was a lovely and unexpected gesture.
Well I can't tell you my wish.... but the meal, service and ambiance made my birthday one to remember. BTW...my BF's fetticini was the best he ever had. I tried it and I agree. Rich, creamy and perfect.
This place is deserving of my longest review ever, because it was that great! We look forward to our leftovers and another trip back to Cafe Allegro, so we can try some other fantastic dishes. read more
