A very good, reliable diner. I particularly enjoy their Greek specials on wednesday nights. Soups taste homemade, so does the bread they serve as part of their meal. A solid place to go for food if you are not quite sure what you are in the mood for. Waitstaff are friendly and service has been good.. They allowed us to bring our dog and sit on their patio for lunch! We were out and about and had our dog with us, we wanted to get lunch but everywhere we called said we couldn't have our dog with us even on the patio or outdoor seating areas. Finally, I called the Alexis Diner and they happily welcomed us and our dog to come on over. The service was great, they were very attentive and friendly. The brought our dog a bowl full of ice water when then brought our drinks out. I had the gyro and it was great! The quesadilla was great too! As the Covid scare is winding down and we entered phase 2 of the reopening , we went to the Alexis diner for breakfast we sat outside on the porch at social distance. We were served by a very friendly staff and Alex the owner stopped by to thank us for the support , my wife ordered the french toast and her being a connoisseur of french toast stated this is the best I ever had!, i had my goto breakfast of eggs over with bacon homefries and toast , the home fries were seasoned and cook to order they are the best in the Capital Region, our friends had omlettes and Waffels all in agreement that this is the best diner if you get a chance go out and support a local business and you will be happy you did. read more

This is a Troy area classic. We went early on a Sunday and it was quiet. Service was quick. I ordered a gyro omelet, without onions, but it arrived with onions. When I pointed this out to the server, she apologized, but made no effort to correct it, nor did she discount the bill in any way. She later came by and said that the cook swore he didn't put onions in the omelet, but they were obviously there - you could see them. It was still tasty, but not what I requested. Server also looked at me weird when I requested challah bread for my toast. In retrospect, she was right 'cause they only toasted one side of the bread. One of my favorite diners! I came for lunch and was satified. I chose to have the Lenten special of fried fish ( the only fried thing I eat on my diet ) and lentil soup. The soup was Delicious!! Huge pieces of Carrots and Celery was throughout the bowl making the soup a hardy meal on it's own. The Fish was cooked well but I didn't know that it came with a side of waffle fries, which if I knew I would have substituted with something more akin to my preference, but once in awhile is OK. My girlfriend works as an RN in the ICU with covid patients. We had one morning together this week because she's worked 6 days in a row and decided to order breakfast. They messed up her order, so I drove back to the restaurant to get the correct food. When we got it home, the English muffin and bacon were burnt and the home fries were hard and undercooked. Plus my food was cold and soggy after the two trips to the restaurant. When she called to complain the person on the phone said, "what do you want me to do about it?" Eventually she offered to have it delivered to us. But who wants their third try on their breakfast an hour later? The point was to share a meal together and try to have a normal morning. So an update on this review. Apparently the manager saw my review before I had even left the diner. So as we went to pay, the manager greeted us, or should I say me, by saying yeah yeah I hear you hated everything, which was completely untrue. I corrected him and asked him not to say it like that. He then proceeded to tell me he gets nothing but compliments about our waitress to which I responded with ok, maybe she was just having a bad day. I was going to leave it at that as I knew no apology for my bad experience was forthcoming. But to my surprise the manager then said that lunch was on him, then I could take my bad review down. At this point I felt like he thought I just wrote the review to get a free lunch, which angered me even more. I stand by my reviews good or bad and had he come and apologized for my experience, maybe offered a complimentary dessert and asked for another chance to show the good service I was used to getting there, I may have changed my rating. But basically trying to bribe a customer to remove a bad review and providing no acknowledgement of the lack luster service just goes to show that the 1 star is all that is deserved. This is probably our fourth or fifth time here and for the most part we have had no complaints other than lack of seasoning in their Chicken salad. But that has changed today, our 9waitress, not even sure if she introduced herself to us, needs to find another career as waitressing is not her forte. She began by asking us what we wanted to drink, easy enough, I asked for a coffee and a soda, got a coffee and water. Had to remind her about soda. So we both ordered roast pork dinner which comes with both soup and salad, when we asked what the soup was we were told chicken pasta and yankee bean, we both chose chicken pasta, when she arrived with soup, it looked like she had just dumped a ladle full into each bowl, the plate that the bowl sat on had as much soup as the bowl, even the crackers were drowned in soup. As for soup itself I was hard pressed to find any chicken and pasta was non existent, I gave it back. Then the salad, when I looked at lettuce it was bad and full of holes, I handed that to her and told her I couldn't eat that either, there was no apology or offer of replacement. Then our food arrived, while the taste was good, I know it must have sat longer than it should have as everything was lukewarm at best. I have to say this has been my most disappointing visit to a diner that we usually enjoy, maybe they need to reevaluate their hiring habits and employ people who even semi enjoy their work. read more

I stopped here out of desperation because it was memorial day and every other place had over an hour wait. Out of hunger, I figured a diner was a safe bet. I'm not a diner fan to begin with (due to the fried, greasy food.) I got a lox omelet and protein pancake stack. Overly salty. No milk alternative options for my coffee, (just mik.) The pancakes weren't cooked on the inside and tasted sour. I took one bite and didn't touch the rest. I should have complained and requested it to be removed from the bill, but the waitress and staff were so kind that I didn't want to be a hassle. I have eaten here and used them more recently because of quick easy pick up and hot good food but this Saturday, June 19, was quite different. We ordered two chicken Caesar wraps. One without onion and tomato and one with everything listed. Both came without onion and tomato. The main issue was that the wrap was really a fold over and had no resemblance to a wrap. Thankfully we were going home to eat as we had no utensils. When I tried to review them on their website they denied my review because "it appears I was not a member of the family". Excellent food but unfortunately experience was ruined by the "lovely" waitress Mary who after hearing me request the gyro platter without tsaziki sauce, she had the nerve to say "it's not a gyro without tzasiki sauce... " and yet expected me to explain why I didn't want the sauce to begin. I do not have to explain to anyone, much less a stranger why I'm not having something in my meal, you don't know my food allergies or dislikes. Alexis diner is one of the places I truly feel comfortable and welcomed being there. I personally suggest going there for breakfast as it's usually their best meal of the day. Their specials are always on point with giving you just the right amount of variety. I personally love their waffles as when I eat their for breakfast it makes me feel like I'm eating desert with the waffles they make. They mix a cool whip cream with a freshly done waffle that just melts in you're mouth. I was a little upset though because they use to give you 2 waffles now they only give you 1. So little old Alexis is getting cheaper and that's usually not a good sign but for now they are on my good side and deserve a thumbs up!! read more

Sign and website boasted "Best of the Capital Region 2007". I should of done the math before going in (It's 7 years later . . . and I believe much has changed). It was Sunday evening around 7:30 pm and therefore we did not have many options. The place we originally wanted to try, just down the street (Garlic Lovers) was closed and we were low on options and tired. We decided to eat at Alexis Diner. To start I will say that my expectations were not high. It is, after all, a diner . . not a 5 star restaurant. That in mind, it didn't even come close to meeting the low bar I had set upon entering. We were greeted by a very friendly elderly man. He had a very friendly demeanor and at first I thought we would have a decent time here after all. We were quickly greeted by a dark haired waitress, who seemed very friendly - but we had to inform her that this was out first time here and the menu was so big that we needed more time to pick. She was super friendly and gave us more time. Few minutes later, a new blond waitress came over who was far less friendly. I told her that the two of us were going to order a few things and share them. I said this so that she would understand to bring a few extra plates. She was obnoxiously rude and replied "Once I bring the food you can do whatever you want with it". GASP. . . umm ok. I ordered the fried ravioli (because I read on the menu that they made their own sauce). I also ordered the Philly Steak sandwich and my coworker ordered the Chicken Cordon Bleu, which was featured on the Daily Specials menu. When our waitress brought out our fried ravioli appetizer, she slammed it on the end of the table and quickly walked away. Didn't say anything at all, and did not bring any plates. Ok . . . so we sat. and sat . . . . and sat . . . and sat. 12 minutes later she came back and pointed to the appetizer plate (which we had not touched) and shrugged her shoulders??? I asked if we could please get some plates. She apologized and did bring some plates about 4 minutes later. I have no idea if the app was ever hot - but it was ice cold when we began to eat it. The food arrived and we cut up the Philly and the Cordon Blue to share it. Here's the skinny: Philly: Dried, chewy, leather beef. Onions and Peppers that were so mushy they were probably cooked that morning and sat in grease all day. If I was not starving . . I would have Cordon Blue: Cheap ham wrapped in dry chicken. Mashed potatoes seemed as if they add water to them, to make them go further . . . mixed veggies were a total insult. MUSH MUSH MUSH . . and cheap grease. Couldn't even gag a bite down. Overall, poor service and bad food . even for diner. It would not have taken much to met the low bar I had set before walking in. If I ever went back, I would stick with breakfast . . but I will never be back. read more

I used to be a regular at Alexi's, and every visit is a trip down nostalgia lane. In those days my wife and I worked opposite shifts, she'd be asleep when I got home and I'd be getting up to leave for work when she got home. It was only on the sporadic days off that she could struggle to stay up late and meet me for lunch that we got to see each other. Most often than not, we'd spend that lunch at Alexi's. Perhaps it's the staff at Alexi that make the place for me. It reminds me of the Greek diners that I grew up with in Queens. It has been years since I've visited and yet the owner still came up and greeted us as old friends. It was remarkable how many regulars they have; it's a sight to watch the staff get a table set with drinks for the people they see walking up. This morning I had the eggs Benedict. Done right, with the right Hollandaise. Good helping of home fries. The wife had a gyro omelet without the pita bread. When she mentioned her need for gluten free, we discovered one of the owners is a recently diagnosed Celiac. We spent a lot of time discussing how things are going, and she's working hard to instruct her staff to be attentive to the needs of gluten free patrons. She's also learning to cook gluten free, and wouldn't doubt the introduction of gluten free items on the menu. read more

We've been here several times since we live nearby and the food is pretty good. This is the first time we've been here since I found out I have Celiac and have to eat gluten free. Our waitress was very nice, but admittedly did not know what gluten or gluten free meant and therefore wasn't really able to direct me to anything on the menu that she knew would be safe so I had to wing it. I ordered the broiled haddock with a baked potato, veggies and a salad. Salad came out with croutons on it and she immediately took it back and made me a fresh one when I pointed out that I couldn't have croutons. Hubby had the Chicken Divan. When Alexis is on, it's on. The food will be delicious, hot, and speedy. The staff will be accommodating and very sweet. It will not be hard to find your server. On those on nights, you cannot find a better diner. However, lately we have had more off nights than on nights when we've visited our hometown diner. Alexis is less than two minutes from my house, so it's an easy and convenient choice for dinner. But the food has been extremely lackluster. Tonight we visited for dinner. Our waitress was professional but not overly friendly, which is nothing too terrible. However, the meal progression just got worse. First, she mixed up our soups. No problem, we just switched the bowls around once she put them down. I didn't realize when she walked away that she took my water glass to refill it. Five minutes pass and I still don't have a water glass. Our waitress had a habit of disappearing throughout the night, so flagging her down was tough. We found her, and she retrieved my water. She had refilled it and just left it on the counter instead of bringing it right back. Our meal came and mine was good, but my french dip could have been served with more au jus. My brother ordered a Philly cheesesteak, which he said was disgusting. It was bland and flavorless, no matter how much ketchup and seasoning he put on it. Our waitress accidentally hit my mother in the lip when she was putting her salad down, which was an accident but could have been prevented if she was more careful. She did apologize profusely, but still. My stepdad's burger was extremely over cooked. Two sides of fries were stale like they had sat under the heat lamp for 15 minutes before being served. Finding the waitress to get our check took another 10 minutes after we finished our meal. Alexis, you can do better than this and you have before. Three stars for the nights that this place can still be incredible, but the lack of consistency and experience tonight really makes us wonder if we will have to find a new place to frequent on those lazy night. read more

I work near Alexis Diner so I frequently go there for lunch. The prices are very, very reasonable (cheap), the food is usually pretty good. Tuesdays are my favorite, goulash is the special of the day. Their egg salad is pretty good as well as their breakfast foods. Portions are very generous as well. The staff is pretty good there and some have quite a sense of humor. I had hot chocolate one winter day and after "drinking" all the whipped cream I asked the waitress for more whipped cream. Next time she walked by she dropped off the can of whipped cream and said "Go nuts" without breaking stride. Overall, I'd recommend checking it out if you're hungry, want a good amount of decent food but don't want to spend too much. read more

This is a superior diner. Lunch specials are very reasonable, change every day, include soup, and come out rather quickly. Expect to pay between $7 and $11 for lunch and dinner will be optional that day. I've become a regular and my belt has noticed. After many times of driving by this place, I finally went into Alexis Diner. When I sat down I noticed the staff were busy. Sure, it was 6pm and everyone was hungry. I noticed the age population is older as well, and very few young people besides the staff. Ordered the chicken parm and the Texas burger. The salads has wilted leaves, turning black, and had the heart of a ice burg lettuce in one of them. The chicken parm had zero flavor besides salt and pepper, and I'm sure they were frozen or pre-made cause the chicken was dry. The Texas burger was just a BBQ burger with French toast bread. Only reason it's not getting a 1 star is because of the staff, really wanted to give a 2.5. They had the manager floating around and asked many of the old timers how their meal was. read more

Great diner in Rensselaer. Consistently great quality and good prices. My husband and I came in for lunch on a very busy day and really enjoyed it. He got a burger and it was cooked perfectly. I got a gyro and the warm pita and beef were so delicious - I inhaled it in about 2 seconds. I placed a large take out order in a blizzard on Friday, and the woman at the counter was so kind to offer to carry it out to my car. It was thoughtful and everyone enjoyed their lunch. We've been here three times now - once for some "I'm hungry, but I don't want dinner" food and twice for breakfast. The evening munchies were kind of greasy (even for fried food!) but tasty, but the eggs benedict... Oh my! I got the florentine benedict, whis has spinach, tomato, poached eggs and hollendaise sauce. Really good. Fresh, bright green spinach, perfectly poached eggs and a nice sauce (could have used a touch more lemon). I find myself thinking about it and wanting to go back - that's always a good sign! The waitresses in the morning are the "Mel's Diner" type who call you "hon" , are quick to refill your coffee and weren't flustered at all when I asked for toast instead of the typical english muffin. I can see why this was voted Best Diner in the tri-city. It's got the shiny, clean atmosphere that I love. Picturesque desserts forced me to break down and get an eclair for the train trip home. It was as good as it looked, smothered in chocolate and overstuffed with cream. I had the Spanish omelette, it was delicious but I found it strange that it only offered the sauce. It calls for Cheddar cheese which is how I got it. I could do without the carrots and would rather see green olives along with the celery, that's how I would define a Spanish sauce. The hash browns were equally great. Average, unnecessary toast. My friend was very satisfied with her skillet that had perfect sunnyside up eggs. They have just about anything you could want (so long as you aren't vegan) and it is pretty tasty for diner food. The service has always been attentive and friendly and the restaurant is often busy. They have excellent early bird specials and on Fridays, my favorite time to go, they have an excellent selection of seafood specials. The price is right AND their baked goods, including breads, are baked on the premises. On my most recent visit, I had a cheeseburger and loved the fresh roll on which it was served. This review is confined to my Sunday breakfast experiences. Since I have close relations in nearby Troy, the Alexis Diner has been a regular stop for early Sunday breakfast. The experience has been very good,for the most part. Our regular waitress, Mary, is always very friendly and efficient. Most recently (9/6), I had an excellent perfectly cooked three egg spinach omelet with swiss cheese and corned beef hash ($7.99) as one of the options in the "make your own omelet" category. I would stick to the egg dishes here as my prior experience with the pancakes was not good. The diner has good coffee. The Alexis Diner is a place I will return to on my future visits to the Capital Region. read more

I was in the East Greenbush area looking for somewhere to go with my teenage sister and realized it was pretty much this or Applebee's. The last time I ate at an Applebee's, I felt parched for days because the food was so damned salty. We went here instead. It's got a basic, slightly-retro diner interior and the same basic menu you'd expect at any diner. I wanted a spinach salad, but unfortunately they stopped serving them after the last E. coli scare. Instead I got just a small Greek salad and a baked potato. It's hard to screw either of those up, so my meal was pretty acceptable. The salad was a little overrun with feta though. As much as I love the salty stuff, this was too much even for me. Sis got a bacon cheeseburger with fries. We shared a hot fudge sundae. The bill came to about 22 dollars. It was acceptable food and service, and the bathrooms are clean, but this just isn't a place I'd go seeking out. Diners aren't typically my scene unless it's late night and there's little else open. Still, it served its purpose. read more
