Food was great. Wines were really reasonably priced and a nice selection of tequilas. We ordered 5 different entrees and I tasted each one, including: butterfish with jalapeno sauce/emulsion. great sauce (i didn't taste the fish here). it was completely consumed. pasta with chicken, sundried tomatoes and chipotle cream. great smoky flavor. My friend/co-worker AC and I decided that we needed a little celebration in our lives - and we heard about Flamenco Fridays at Alegria and thought it would a cute place to hang out. We were so pleased with the entire place! We perched ourselves on the bar and ordered a carafe of sangria and some empanadas. The empanadas came out piping hot and the sangria was smooth with the right amount of kick. We ended up drinking ourselves silly with sangria as we watched the Flamenco show. Then we moved ourselves to a dining table and we were joined by two other girls. I ended up getting the Ropa Vieja - shredded beef, rice, beans, plantains - I was in heaven! AC got the El Gaucho - skirt steak with chimichurri sauce and she couldn't help but exclaim, "it's a party in my mouth!" She got the chocolate mousse for dessert while I opted for flan. Muy bueno! Went here after Sevilla was a nightmare to get into. We got there after their kitchens closed, but we were looking for a place to drink, so it hardly mattered. We ordered a couple of pitchers of sangria, and it was delicious. I'm not a big fan of red wine, but the sangria made me happy. I also tried their mango mojito, which was pretty good as well. Alegria is a nice, free joint to chill at on a Saturday night, but maximum occupancy was definitely exceeded. It's a small, nicely decorated restaurant / bar, but it's just too pequeno to be like a bar / dance club. I did enjoy the establishment as a nice place to chill at while listening to the live entertainment, but the amount of human traffic was suffocating. In between the Salsa band's break, the DJ would spin a collection of top 40s with a mix of the Latin flava where you would naturally want to get down, but again, my gripe is that it's just too packed to really be enjoying it. I guess you can't really complain since it's free and Sevilla is charging a ridiculously overpriced entrance fee of $30. I'd rather spend the extra $10 dollars at a club in LA, but since this place has no cover, it's cool. The food that was coming out of the kitchen looked very appetizing, so I'd be curious to try out the food here with all the positive yelp reviews. Ladies, the restroom situation here, considering the amount of people, was a bit of a pain. I can't recommend this joint but a solid manager saved a fail of a night. The service was not good and the food is a bust but it does have a couple really good items. So for my birthday this year, my boyfriend took me to his favorite resturant that he's been talking about for almost 2 years now. We came on a Wednesday afternoon, it wasn't crowded at all. This is the best place in Long Beach for Sangria and Tapas, hands down. My favorites: - Calamari (CALAMARES AL FUEGO): Tender, with a light, crispy batter, and just the right spice to the dip. - Ahi Tuna (TIRADITOS): Perfectly selected and wonderfully seasoned. Better than many Ahi plates I have had at Japanese and Hawaiian restaurants. - The Sangria: If you don't drink this (and eat the fruit!), then you might as well go somewhere else... We had one person in our group who is not a fan of drinks in general, and she had two glasses. It snuck up on everyone who had it (which also meant our night lasted longer than it probably should have, but that is never a bad thing). They have just the right blend of brandy, vermouth, and red wine, with an excellent balance between sweet and tangy. The service is wonderful when they are not busy (I haven't been there on a Friday or Saturday night yet. In fact, from what I have read I think I'll stick to slow nights instead). You can relax on the patio and people-watch. Our waitress went the extra mile to meet some special requests. And the bartender did the right thing: When he was unable to serve a drink as ordered (they did not have any blue-cheese olives for a friend of mine), he came out and personally apologized. Hostess directed me to a solo patio seat on this Thursday night just before 10 pm. Sat for about ten minutes. Server, Kevin, asked me, "have you been helped" with a concerned voice. He offered a beverage when I told him no, then let him know I'd take an ice water and the taco platter. Taco platter arrived within 15 minutes. Kevin refilled water several times. Before even walking into Alegria, there are latin sounds and the fragrance of latin flavors that invite you in and tell you that you will be having fun here, you will be entertained, have good drinks and delicious food. There is a host waiting outside for seating and welcoming and I was pleasantly greeted. after being shown to my table, i looked and around and admired the fun decor of spanish words on the wall. was i in a spanish restaurant? upon looking at the menu and the list of tapas, i noticed that this wasn't a typical spanish restaurant--more a latin infusion restaurant that uses both spanish and latin american flavors in their dishes. the waiter was very kind and helpful and recommended the Sangria. He informed us that Alegria's Sangria was an award winning recipe since 1994 that was made with red wine, brandy, sweet vermouth, fresh pears, apples & oranges and aged for two weeks. So we ordered a pitcher and at $25, it is an excellent price for the high quality of sangria. The sangria was very tasty and it complimented the conversation as well as the dinner. To start things off, our waiter suggested a tapa as an appetizer, so I ordered shredded duck with tomatoes and onions served a some grilled bread, it was very savory. After the tapa, we had salads. I ordered their Alegria Salad that has mixed organic baby greens, tossed with fresh seasonal fruit and walnuts, with a Brazilian raspberry vinaigrette dressing. This salad is more and the sweet side as the sweet and juicy fruit and the tangy sweet dressing is a refreshing and sweet summer type salad. it was a nice choice to go from savory to sweet and have such an explosion of flavors. For the main course I ordered the Zarzuela de Mariscos. The Zarzuela De Mariscos is a Spanish fisherman's favorite meal, fresh catch of the day fish, fresh manila clams, mussels, crawfish and tender calamari, all stewed in a light spicy saffron tomato broth served with grilled country bread. This is like an spanish version of Cioppino. The soup was in a tomato and seafood broth and was served in a good sized bowl. This soup was extremely satisfying, especially on those days when it is cold outside and you are looking for comfort food to warm your soul and fill your belly Spanish fisherman style. I didn't think I had any room for dessert, but after being tempted by our waiter to try the tres leches, I couldn't refuse. I had hot coffee and it went perfectly with the dessert. Their version of tres leches is a very moist chocolate cake, topped with a velvety chocolate mousse and drizzled with a wild raspberry sauce. It was so good ending the night with this popular latin dessert. it was like the cherry on top. if you usually have flan, and have never tried tres leches, i would highly recommend. Afterwards, the sangria kicked in and got the best of us, while we tried some Karaoke. all in all, it was a wonderful and fun latin dinner that really spiced up our Wednesday night. Kinda reminded me of the chicken at Habana, more specifically the tangy onions. My date ordered the much-raved-about El Gaucho. It was good, but probably not great. Must say, I was a BIT disappointed. Argentinian-style steak is supposed to be some of the best in the world. Maybe I'm bias, because I've had some pretty ridiculous Argentinian Chimichurri Steak at a small beach shack restaurant in Puerto Rico (La Parilla). However, the side of sauteed spinach it comes with is BOMB. I'd probably come back just for that. The flavor is EXQUISITE. Overall, though, the food + service + ambiance were perfect for a good date. I don't know if this place just had a horrible lunch service the day I brought company here or what but man, it ruined my meal with out of town family. We came because of the reviews and those reviews really didn't match up with what we got. There was one busser and one server for the entire restaurant when we were there- we waited so long (after asking twice to have our order taken) that the hostess came to take our order. There was a yelp checkin for a free appetizer, so we ordered a ceviche. Skip it, it tastes dull and bland and not fresh, some pitiful small and underflavored cocktail shrimp in a martini glass. Even for free food, I wasn't interested. Our other two food items were the steak and the paella, which people seemed pleased with. The three of us shared because we still had plans for dessert elsewhere. The steak was good but the paella's fish not only had freezer taste but also was fishy, like it'd gone bad. We asked that they take the dish away and even that took forever! It seemed like they had a real problem with having enough staff on hand. The hostess and the busser were very nice but lacked the ability to handle our problems and would constantly apologize and tell us to wait. And wait. And wait some more while they waited for someone else to come deal with us. Finally got the check (took asking 3 times) and they charged us for the free appetizer and the inedible paella. I'm not usually that stingy but considering only one item out of the three was really considered "food food", I asked that they correct the bill. The hostess informed me that the owner had to approve it- which apparently he finally did because she returned with the corrected check. (Where is that server anyways?) I've been to Spain and the food is 100% authentic. Alegria's has a cute and charming decor and a diverse and wonderful menu. I love this place and often bring friends from out of town here. It's a great place to go, because you can go just to have a drink (they have an excellent wines by the glass), nibble on some tapas or enjoy a full-blown meal. I recommend their paella and their tapas. They have really fresh seafood, but their chicken tends to be on the dry side. The only bad thing I can say is that recently the service there has been getting poorer. But they seem to only let their best servers work during their busiest hours, so if you are there on a Thurs, Fri or Sat night you shouldn't run into that problem. They also have flamenco dancing on those same nights if you are into that kind of thing. Personally, I think its just a loud distraction. read more

Our appetizer was the Humitas Chilenas, which is a sweet corn tamale souffle, with shrimp in the souffle mix. I have never tasted anything so delicious!
