Being born and raised in Germany, my fiancé is a sucker for German restaurants and brews! We tend to go to different ones to see where we can get the best schnitzel. We've actually been to another restaurant under the same company as Rasselbock, so we were delighted to be able to stop by since it's close by! We parked in the very back of the restaurant in the little plaza, and were seated with ease. They have indoor seating and outdoor seating, especially for furry friends. We originally sat inside, but our friend brought his dog, so we moved outside. We had ordered several drinks and had sat at the restaurant for over 6 hours. We ordered a range of BRLO IPA, Hacker, their seasonal beer, and more. As for food, we ordered their jagerscnitzel, Brussels sprouts, truffle fries, spatzle, and beignets! Our friend ordered their bratwurst with sauerkraut. We were very impressed with how delicious and fresh everything was. It was extremely savory and crispy. Quite addicting alongside our beers. Our servers were very delightful and very accommodating to our needs. They provided support and checked in on us frequently. We never were rushed to leave and were able to enjoy our conversations. Was excited to have a nice, warm pretzel in rainy weather couple months ago. Started this review but guess didn't finish. We met up here with out of town family for a bit of a linner. I am not much for drinking beer so I ordered the apple cider with mineral water that has the really long name I didn't even try to pronounce. Our server was a guy who seated us for our reservation at the patio table we reserved outside. He set up a heat lamp but we had to ask him to turn it on. Had to ask him to wipe down the side of the table that had water on it from the rain. Had to pull out the bench to get in. And, Iih habe einen großen roten Stift für dich. That will get you slapped. They could greatly improve the pretzel, which was as hard as the seats and served with refrigerated cheese, but the dudes salad (basically: Greek fries) were unique, the whole table loved the crispy fried brussel sprouts, and the impressive lamb burger with tzatziki and argula is one of the best sandwiches in Long Beach. read more

Tried our luck today, and ordered the snitzel (chicken), with two sides. Very much like I call a chicken milanesa. Not dry, and had a generous mushroom gravy on top. It was Sunday afternoon and husband and I needed a beer after a little record shopping down the street. We decided to try out this German pub, which was highly recommended by a friend. So glad we did! There are plenty of seats inside and outdoor patio seatings. Let's sit at the bar. Beers always taste better at the bar :) Husband got the beer flight and I opted for a pint of Hofbrau Original. We shared the: Bavarian pretzel served with homemade sweet mustard and obatzda. And what is obatzda? This one had a mixture of brie, cream cheese, paprika, salt, pepper, maybe some butter too. I never came across this at any German pub. Omg. This is the real deal. Yum! And the: Hungarian Debreziner - smoked pork sausage with paprika, garlic, pepper, and marjoram. With choice of 2 sides. We picked cucumber dill salad (with sour cream dill dressing) and sauerkraut - we love all things fermented. This was so good. This is an awesome protein and veggie combo for those who are watching their waistline. This was a perfect snack. There are so many other dishes to try and I am already wanting to return for more. I visited Rasselbock on a Saturday evening with a friend around 6:30pm. We were excited to see a live accordion player bringing all of the Oktoberfest vibes in the patio! Ample seating inside the restaurant as well as on the covered patio. The restaurant does seem like it would accommodate a larger group well. At this time, the table wait was around an hour BUT we were happy to grab seats at the bar, which is first come, first serve. It took a few minutes for us to be acknowledged, but as soon as we were, this was when the visit started going downhill... We were super excited to try a Pear Ale we saw on the menu, but were told that not only was it out of stock, but the restaurant was out of ALL ales they carried. When I inquired about the lightest beer they carry, I was recommended to try the Siegel Grapefruit, but due to Oktoberfest, the smallest size they are selling is the one liter (ONE LITER) size. I'd hoped that an exception could've been made, being that this beer was on tap and that they were out of all similar options. After tasting it (it's very yummy), I bit the bullet and ordered the liter. It then took an inexplicable additional 10 minutes to get the beer in hand. (Remember: we were sitting AT.THE.BAR). For food, we ordered the mini potato pancakes, bratwurst entree, a schnitzel entree, and a pretzel. While waiting, we added an order of the deviled eggs as well. After waiting over 30 minutes, the mini potato pancakes (appetizer) were served TOGETHER with our entrees. The pancakes were cold, and while you could taste that they were probably decent warm, having them cold ruined the dish. The bratwurst was mediocre, the mashed potatoes (on the side) were decent, the other side I ordered (to go with the bratwurst) was sauerkraut. The sauerkraut was served warm, which I (now) understand after some research is also not uncommon. But, it being warm was very odorous, which took away from my enjoyment of the meal. My friend enjoyed her schnitzel, as well as the Brussels sprouts side. Her 2nd side was the mashed potatoes as well, which she agreed are pretty tasty. The pretzel was served warm with mustard and another sauce- my friend enjoyed this very much. The deviled eggs were a COMPLETE MISS! Who knew you could serve "undeviled eggs"? Visually, they LOOK like deviled eggs, but upon biting into them, it became quickly clear that the filling was nothing more than yolk scooped out, whipped, and piped back into the whites...no seasoning, no mustard, no mayo, no...ingredients that make it deviled. On the eggs, there was a bacon bits garnish that did nothing to add to the flavor. These hard boiled eggs are served with what we surmised was a garlic aioli of sorts. It helped add some flavor to the eggs, but still didn't make them "devilled". Took some time to get our server's attention for the bill. Tummy rejected the meal shortly after getting home. Transparently, unsure if it was the food or the fact I'd just downed a liter of beer. Sigh. Value for the dollar is reasonable. 2.5 stars- will not return. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to venture into Bixby Knolls and try a new (dog friendly) establishment one afternoon. I had Rasselbock saved in my bookmarks for the longest so we settled for this lovely German beer garden. We were seated outside and our hospitable server was happy to break down the differences of each German brew on the menu. Just about every staff member was kind and accommodating as the busboy even brought out a bowl of water for my fur baby. Nonetheless, the service was pretty great. I was also happy to see that this establishment has a doggy menu! Like how cool is that, lol. I ordered my dog a grilled chicken bowl and my boyfriend opted for the pretzel appetizer as we had already eaten beforehand. The pretzel was nice although just a tad bit on the harder side. This was my first time trying German beer and let's just say now I know why Oktoberfest exists lol. I ordered a petrus sour on my first round and boy did it get the job done. Our server warned me that it was pretty sour and even offered me a sample, but I decided to go all in - no regrets though! I also tried a darker beer on my second round however I don't remember the name of it. The overall vibe and ambiance is super chill and relaxed. The patio is fortunately shaded so we didn't have to worry about sitting in the sun or whatnot. The indoor seating is also reasonably sized and accommodating. This might be one of the best places to grab a beer in Cali! The vibes are great and the service is friendly. They have some of the best German beers. My favorite is the Kolsch and the Hofbrau dunkel. The prices are great and they even serve boots lol As for the food I've tried a lot and the sausage platter is great. Don't sleep on the giant pretzel or the deviled eggs. And if you're hungry try the pork shank. Lots of meat and it's served with mashed potatoes. Place number 14 or 15 on the Bixby Knolls lunch tour with Kevin. I was here seven years ago with my dad not too long before he died. The menu has changed for the better. Traditional bratwurst- A, served on a bed of arugula with a tasty mustard on the side. Roasted red potatoes- A. Recommended by Tim. They were crispy outside, tender inside and well seasoned. Sauerkraut- A. Some of the best I've had. Not too salty. Pork Wiener schnitzel- B. Nicely breaded without too much breading. Red cabbage- A. One of my favorite sides. Spatzle- B. A little bland. There were grill marks on it which I enjoyed. Chicken Cordon Bleu- A. The ham was so good. Could have been sliced a little thinner. I had the BRLO IPA. It was good, but there's something about German beer that I don't really like. I can't put my finger on it. Tim let me taste three other beers too, which I thought was very nice. This speaks volumes about his customer service skills in my opinion. The service was fantastic. As you can probably tell, Tim took my order and entertained me while I waited for my food. What a fun spot to bring your friends! The vibes of this German bar/restaurant are very relaxed, and it's located on a lively street in Bixby Knolls with plenty of options to bar hop or eat. While the menu is basically just sausages and schnitzel, they both things excellently and offer great sides. For the sausages, I liked the Kasekrainer, which is stuffed with cheese. For sides, my favorites are the spatzle, Brussels sprouts, and German fries. They have a wide selection of beers that are available in many sizes, including my favorite: the boot. They were on top of service and had plenty of conversation skills at the bar to make it a fun time. The beer is AMAZING, they have an impressive list of euro beers and staff give great beer recommendations. To make it even better, their kitchen is putting out A1 food! Again, the staff give awesome recommendations for that too. My fiancée and I have passed by the location a million times but are glad we finally stopped in and enjoyed it. We were looking for a place to watch the World Series. Since we got out of work at start time it was tough to find a seat at any establishment. I called Rasselbock and they answered, confirming they had space available and the game on TV. When we arrived we were sat in the outdoor area and given art materials for ourselves and our child dinner partner. The game was in fact on tv with no sound because there was live entertainment. A gentleman playing the accordion entertained us while we drank and ate our scrumptious meal. As the weather was a bit chilly we found the perfect destination because the outdoor seating was covered and heated. The food was hearty and filling which is exactly what we needed. I tried the vegan schnitzel which was not beyond meat but another style and very tasty. Glad that they had vegan options as they were out of the chicken sausage. The spicy beef sausage was completely dry and burnt black, reminds me of those endless turning hotdogs at 7-11. Cheddarwurst was perfectly cooked. Sides were great. Mustard was very mild. This place has fallen off so bad, it's upsetting. First off Vanessa H. gave us the worst service I've ever had in Bixby Knoll. We ordered fries and a pretzel as an appetizer from the busy boy. Then the waitress just never came back to check on us, ever. We kept trying to get her attention. Finally after about 20 minutes I asked who our waitress was and she said "It's me". I stated nicely that we have been waiting to order, and she said "You should have flagged me down and waved or something". I didn't really respond just asked if we can order. I'm not trying to have to chase down my waitress and beg to order at a sit down restaurant. The food has greatly fallen in quality as well. They will serve you a burger that is cold and raw in the middle. I don't know what happened to the potato pancakes, they are now smaller and mushy. Sausages are under cooked. They must have a new cook. There is no way this is the same guy from last year. We used to go here weekly for over a year until now. 3 bad experiences in a row is too much. It's sad because this place used to have great service and great food. Now the new servers are bad and the food is mid. The only good thing lately is the pretzel and the beers. Located in the popular Bixby Knolls neighborhood of Long Beach, Rasselbock German restaurant serves up traditional German fare, mixing in typical bar food and a good selection of German draft and bottled beer. Found the food that we ordered to be quite good, with very friendly service. Guessing that it's definitely a place where the atmosphere adds to meal enjoyment, especially at nighttime with alcohol. This is the original location of Rasselbock, opening in 2016. Their sister German restaurant (same owners) is Wirsthaus, in Los Angeles, opened in 2011. There is now a second Rasselbock (German word to describe a mythical woodland creature, with the body of a rabbit and antlers of a deer) in Mar Vista (opened in 2019 and close to the Venice neighborhood). They are only open for lunch on Fr/Sa/Su and has a large indoor and outdoor dining space; the indoor having various mounted TVs to watch sporting event and the outdoor set-up to mimic a bier garten. A friend and I took the bus from our place. Rasselbock does offer their draft beers in a traditional 'Das Boot!' (2 liters in a glass boot for about $33). Decided to skip alcohol because of the company, though I will be back to try their house kolsch. Ordered three things to share and was happy with all three: sausage platter ($16), mini potato pancakes ($9.50), and a Dude's Salad ($12.50). The three together ended up being a great sampling buffet for two. I was disappointed that they don't have the exotic sausage platter anymore (wild boar, bison, and kasekrainer) so ended up getting their normal (consisting of the same kasekrainer, bratwurst, chicken mango/jalapeno sausage). All three were good, especially the kasekrainer which is a traditional pork sausage filed with emmentaler cheese. I lived in the bratwurst state for a long time, and this version was decent. I normally don't care for chicken sausage, but this was enjoyable, mainly because of the natural casing being so crisped. In fact, all three sausages were expertly presented, grilled and crisped perfectly with cross cuts. The platter came with 3 homemade mustards (definitely helps to cut the richness of the sausage) and the amount was the right size for the two of us. The utensils given was the typical spoon, but also a giant steak knife...just perfect to cut the sausage exactly the way you want. The mini potato pancakes was neatly described in the menu, mentioning the inclusion of apply sauce, mascarpone cheese, and dill. I thought it would just be a pile of fried potatoes, but it instead was presented almost like bruscetta, with each pancake topped with the above ingredients. Truly meant to be a finger food. The third thing was a Dude's salad, which I thought was an actual term, describing a certain type of salad. It's not...but is actually easy to describe: It's a greek salad where the lettuce bed is replaced with crispy french fries. It shouldn't work at all, and by itself, I don't think it would. But together, with a rich sausage platter and well fried potatoes, it worked really well. It's just important to eat it right away...it would not keep too long. Service was friendly throughout, and payment was directly at the table. One of the main reasons I've been meaning to go, is that they are part of the Resy list of restaurants that American Express will give cash back for, if you frequent them and use the particular AMEX card.
