Came here on a Saturday night, parking was awful. Drove around the blocks a few times and ended up parking at the parking lot right across the restaurant for $10 for the first 2 hours. (Yes the sign says $5 for 0-2 hours, but that only applies on weekdays. Price is doubled on weekends). With the parking situation aside, everything else went smoothly. Arrived at 9pm ish and got seated right away. We skipped the appetizers, jumped right into the entree and ordered the Zarzuela De Mariscos (Seafood soup) and the El Gaucho, plus a glass of Sangria. Service was a bit slow but with the fresh bread and the Black Malibu samples we got, time seemed to have gone by a little faster. Both entrees were amazing! Service was a bit slow but great. The server "checked on us" once in a while. Of course she liked coming over when I had my month filled with food, so I could only give some sort of hand gestures in response. Speaking of which, the music at the restaurant was so loud that I literally had to scream and shout to communicate. It could be because there is a night club attached to the restaurant on the other side and if I am not mistaken, both the restaurant and the club share two 1-stall-bathroom, 1 for each gender. The music is sometimes pretty good actually. Gone many times with my guy friends and/or my wife. Pending on the bar tender the drinks are pretty good too. Of course when the is full don't expect anything close to good service. Many nights the music wasn't good enough to want to dance to, but overall if you go with the right people its pretty descent. read more

I created a yelp account just to review my HORRIBLE experience with this sorry excuse for a restaurant. After finishing our meal we spoke with two different managers about a discount code we were suppose to get during our last visit here. Well, lo and behold they refused to honor our card stating the manager who gave us the card was fired for doing just that. Fine. Whatever. But your business is still here thus, your manager being fired for whatever reason is not our problem but yours. It has nothing to do with the discount itself, there are simply rules for these sorts of situations. The business should honor our code regardless of issues they may or may not have had with a former manager. One manager said it was physically impossible to input a "hand written discount" into the machine because it requires an override. The fact that she stood there and told that lie was insulting. As a manager you can void transactions, discount, etc. so please don't stand there and try to tell me otherwise. Both managers told us conflicting lies and I have never seen such repulsive customer service, and I've worked in restaurants before. The managers were rude and at one point offerred us a discount for next time. So they can refuse to use that discount as well? We are never coming back, and this is based solely on principle. I simply refuse to give my money to an organization that is clearly backwards in their policies and customer service. read more

How do you write a review when your table is ok, but the table next to you is getting attitude? Do you work it in or do you let it go? I'm going with working it in. Alas... I've been to Alegria twice, about six months apart. Had I written the review after the first time, the rating likely would have been one or two stars based on the over the top greasy food. I am very happy to say that on our next visit on Sunday, things had changed considerably. The paella valenciana was good, if a little overwhelmed with rice. The "El Gaucho" was the most surprising. The chimichury sauce had a more citrusy flavor than I'm used to ---- but it worked. The grilled marinated tender flank-steak styled served with sautéed spinach and roasted potatoes. The shrimp ceviche had a cute presentation and concept, integrating cucumbers and mango, but skimping out on the shrimp. As far as drinks go, the mojito wasn't that great, but was passable. The white sangria was interesting in that it had a strawberry tinge to it. Perhaps the most interesting was the Cazadores Doble. Service was, err, um...interesting. It was ambiguous who our server was. We started out with a male, but had better luck with a female host / server. She did a great job explaining things on the menu, what goes on other nights of the week (apparently they have salsa dancing on certain days) and even the changes made by the new management. The male seemed confused but not surprised that she took our orders. Props to the woman. Dude - get it together. Then there's the other table. We watched as the manager came over to listen to a complaint from the customer. According to her, they used to eat their often and the dish was made differently with much larger shrimp. The manager accepted the send-back, but not before rolling his eyes and slamming the dish in the bar or kitchen (wherever it was, it was really obvious and we could all here). Yikes! Restaurant owners and managers - body language says a lot. Yah, sometimes customers can be annoying, but suck it up! You are in the SERVICE industry, after all. P.S. Yelp deal and groupon deal. So my baby sitter decided to cancel on us last minute for valentines day and I called the restaurant to see if they were good with kids. The person on the phone said, "of course we're good with kids! Please bring them". My wife is a vegetarian and I asked if they had a specific menu for valentines day that doesn't include everything on their original menu... just to ensure we get there and they wont have anything ready for her. His response was "No worries. We do have a special menu but we always have vegetarian options available just for that reason. Your wife will be able to order anything she wants from our original menu that is vegetarian." Well... great! I'm thinking this is going to be a nice dinner out, even if we couldn't get a baby sitter. We get there and the place looks really nice. It's on Pine so of course theres a lot of nice things to look at and stuff going on. We are seated by the window and that's where everything went to complete shit. We asked for a high chair for our son and the hostess gave us a look like "why would you bring a baby anywhere?". She said of course and walked right back to her stand. We asked our waiter for a high chair and he forgot. After about 10 minutes we asked a random bus boy for a chair and he took on the arduous mission of walking 15 feet and grabbing the high chair. We asked our waiter about the vegetarian options and he said they wouldn't do that. Ok... well what, am I supposed to eat and she not? I informed him of my conversation the previous night and who I spoked with and he informed me he wasn't there to verify. But that he COULD make two items on the menu without adding the meat... (problem solved right?)... not really. We order an appetizer and I order a drink, expecting for those to come somewhat soon. After about 20 minutes my son is starting to freak out because theres nothing to do. He is alot less patient then us, and if theres no food, and hes supposed to be sitting in a chair for 30 minutes... well anyone with a baby will laugh at that. And if you have a baby who will sit motionless for 60+ minutes without making a peep... please write a book and share your knowledge! So my son starts to stand on the chair my wife is sitting at puts his hand on the window. All at once, the appetizer, the drink, the food comes out. The waiter puts down the plate... looks up at my son and sees some hand prints on the window. His response (which i never would have imagined a day in my life before) was "JESUS CHRIST". He walked away and wouldnt come back. Although there were only TWO things he allowed my wife to order without meat (still charging full price) he gave us the wrong one. Didn't matter anyways because he wouldn't come back to our table. Nachos were cold as hell, my drink had been sitting for easily 20 minutes and tasted like straight water. Terrible experience and I wouldnt go back if you paid me. I tipped (our $80 bill) $8 or 10%... not because I felt like the waiter deserved it. But for a $4 bottle of windex and a box of kleenex. I have never had such a poor experience at a restaurant. I'd rather dine at the DMV and go to a Social Security place for dessert. read more

Latins Love to Salsa... Tapas, sangria, paella, and salsa dancing. I felt like I was in "Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights", not as the star but as an extra. I am Chinese, I know kung-fu and calculus. I don't know how to salsa, but I do know how to eat. Awesome tapas. Just get the Plato Grande. It has a little bit of everything. They also have one of the best paellas I have ever had. I ordered the Paella Del Oceano (Seafood Paella) and it was delicious. Full of seafood and flavor. It takes a while to make so munch on some tapas and take back some sangria while waiting. I had no idea where to meet my friends for my birthday dinner last weekend but wanted to keep it chill and local. We were deciding between Alegria and Open Sesame, but since I remembered the great sangria here, we had to come and get a few pitchers. It was a Friday night when we walked in hoping to get a table where we could hear ourselves talk. Unfornately since the hostess asked if we had reservations and when we said no, she sat us at the furthest most table next to the stage and loud speakers to the whole restaurant. At first it was annoying and I could feel hearing senses dissipate. But after half a glass of sangria, it was A-OKAY! Just talk to me with my good ear now, the left side. There were two Flaminco dancers on the small 5x5 stage but those ladies can still break it down. I thought it was funny when they pulled my guy friend who doesn't dance much up for a demo and he did it a great job. It wasn't that funny when she pulled me up later that evening when I had a few glasses of sangria in me and was afraid of falling off stage. But hey, it was still fun! I didn't fall off the stage, yay! Service is a bit snotty, the waitress was scarcely found but maybe they were understaffed that night. Price is just as Mike L. described it. I ordered the Ave Rellena, a roasted cornish hen with spinach and corn meal. The cornish hen was a bit dry that night but the spinach and corn meal was great. I was so full I couldn't even finish half of the cornish hen. This place is so TITS! BFF Rachael W. wanted to celebrate her hump day last week by chilling out at Alegria. It seemed like a great suggestion as the place was nicely dimmed with a very soothing atmosphere on a slow night. The place was not really packed, but it does seemed like a lot people trickled in all through out the night. Our bartender decided to card me, but not Rachael because as he put it, "she looked old enough". Nice touch barkeep! It didn't take long for my BFF to look like a sap when she heard that. When it was time to order, Rachael, Claire, and myself all ordered the "El Gaucho". Nicely described by Vincent T. as a "steak with chimichurri sauce". It has a special blended spice to add flavor to the cutlet piece of steak with rice and baked potato wedges. There is a night entertainment as a two man band group was performing some Spanish soft rock pop with a Spanish flava mixed to it. We didn't get any flamenco dancers or some belly dancers which I was hoping for. But hey, what's better than Menuedos than this duet playing? The price in this place at dinner time might not suit people very well as most of the main entrees will range upward of over $13 to $20. Our El Gaucho cost a quarter under $20. It will be a consideration if you are under budget restraints. The glass of Sangria was $6. With an appetizer or dessert, it will be over that $30 range which I was in that night. Overall I liked the atmosphere, very chilling and relaxing. It can be a date night place on a slow weekday night. Heard the weekend evenings are rockin'. The waiters were very attentive and the manager was so generous as he provided us with complimentary appetizers. The calamari, the carnita tostadas, the cheese, olives, chips, dip, calamari, paella were all delicious. Getting here was a pain because of firetrucks and whatnot haha And, i made a few wrong turns 'cause I'm not used to the streets of Long Beach. I love how there's a classical guitarist and flamenco dancers. I'm not sure if they're there every night or only for the Yelp event, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching them dance, and dance with them. I got out of the bathroom and joined the small audience and the dancer looks for volunteers. My +1 to Chad A and Michael P's UYE yells out, "He wants to dance," and shoves me towards her. Complimentary drinks and food weren't included, but we were free to order anything from Alegria's menu, as well as special happy hour deals, exclusive only to B&B's attendees. Since our class was on a Sunday afternoon, I decided to get a mimosa, which was only $5! It was delicious and one of the best mimosas I've ever had. Perfect ratio of OJ to champagne, and the champagne wasn't bitter at all. Jessica C. ordered a glass of beer and some nachos, which she completely finished by herself 'cause she thought they were that tasty. We bought a Livingsocial deal, Sunday brunch for 2 for $25 with two entrees snd bottomless sangria or mimosas. The sangria and mimosas were good. The service was great (friendly and mostly timely). The decor is cute and the location is unbeatable. Our table was wobbly, and that was never fixed. Didn't bother us too much. Still, I can't dole out more than 2 stars for the place. All the positives above make it even more unforgivable that the food was bleah. We got the tapas frias and nachos. Tapas frias was odd - I don't understand when people serve unpitted olives. Am I supposed to spit out the pit in the middle of a restaurant? The honey glaze on the cheese was good. The nachos were strictly alright. I've had better at home. Very bland and small portion. Still, reasonably priced. My boyfriend got the skirt steak and I got a vegetarian selection (capirotada de verduras). Both dishes were oily and greasy. My dish was doughy (either because the tortilla was wet, or undercooked, I couldn't tell). There was a lot of unnecessary cheese on the dish. The description reads "grilled vegetables" but all I saw was mushrooms and what tasted like canned tomatoes. I couldn't even finish my food. I had the pleasure of having dinner here with my fiancee' to help (pre) celebrate his upcoming birthday. "Hi Honey!" The food here is excellent. I had the Camarones Al Ajillo: Jumbo black tiger prawns sautéed in a garlic cayenne-tequila sauce, on a bed of spinach; accompanied with white rice. My guy had the Solomillo: Fillet Mignon topped with red wine cinnamon mushroom sauce, served with potato cakes and sautéed spinach. YUM-ME! I've never tasted such tender meat. I was excited to try this based on previous reviews... They are the only place locally that has even one cuban item on the menu... And the fact that they serve caiprinhas (which I have been looking for since I moved to LB). Went there today for lunch to watch the World Cup. I was greeted right away and ordered a drink. I was only one of two customers at the bar my entire visit. It took a little longer than usual to receive my first drink, but I could tell they were busier than expected so I let it pass. The caipirinha was delicious!! Several minutes later I was finally asked if I would like to order food. I ordered the Algeria fire calamari description being 'calamari sautéed with sofrita fire sauce and wilted arugula' sounds delicious! Just picturing the fresh calamari covered in sauce atop greens.. A welcome change to the normal fried calamari option. As I said. They were busy. Quite a bit of Chaos. I finally receive my appetizer and as the bartender (very friendly guy I believe his name was Steve) set down my plate he said the kitchen had made the wrong calamari. They had prepared the fried calamari with the romesco sauce. I was pretty unhappy about this and definitely showed it in my reaction. I was really looking forward to the other appetizer.after a bit of a back and forth I accepted the plate and Steve offered to get me a cup of the fire sauce. After convincing me the other dish would have also been deep fried although the menu says sautéed I then asked about the arugula and he assured me there was no arugula served with the dish... The disagreements over this appetizer got to the point that I opened up the menu so he could read the description. His answer was that this is a brand new menu. The calamari was bland, blah, and rubbery. However both the romesco and the fire sauces were extremely tasty. After that I ordered another drink..which took quite a while. Steve politely told me that the drink would be on the house since it took a while for him to get a chance to make it. Next came for time to ask for the check .. I showed Steve the 'free appetizer' voucher I had received upon checking in on Yelp. I was told I could not use it. Now the voucher does not have any disclaimers at all... But I was told it had to be an appetizer under $10. Ok understandable. The appetizer I was served was exactly $10 so I asked for clarification if it was 10 and under or under 10. He did not directly answer my question ..he said that after tax the appetizer would be over $10 excluding it... This is a load of b***s***. I have never in my life heard of any promotion taking into account sales tax.. Food, retail or otherwise. When I agreed, but still expressed disdain, Steve said that he comped my drink to make up for the wrong entree.... Funny considering he had said the free drink was because it took so long to get me the drink. I was trying to be sympathetic to the chaos the employees were having to handle in a busy lunch, however one cannot ignore the lag on everything I ordered (including the check), being convinced to accept the wrong appetizer, being argued with over the description on the menu, the lack of knowledge of the menu by the entire staff even if it is brand new, being told I can't use a voucher because the 'sales tax' puts it over the max price.... And lest I forget BEING CHARGED FOR THE APPETIZER I DID NOT RECEIVE WHICH WAS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE ONE I WAS SERVED ( it might be just me but if I am not going to OFFER to remake the incorrect meal, OR comp it, then I certainly would charge the customer for the appetizer they were served if it is less expensive than the one they ordered and did not receive!!!). Very disappointment in the Red Sangria it was wine with pieces of fruit. Alegrias just looked so dirty. I don't know what the hell they were thinking of having "ONE" restroom for women. Alegria is small, dark and the live music is pretty good. I've never eaten there I just go to dance and hang out with the girls when they venture into the LBC from Orange County. The live band plays some really great latin jazz. I do not go to places where I have to stand in line to get in. As a result Alegria is one of the very, very few places I'll go to on Pine when I want to do a little dance. (If you arrive at Mariposas early, you won't have to wait in line, but the place will look like a drunken prom in about 2 hours. The crowd is too young for my taste.) The last time I was there I saw a nice young guy with a Flock of Seagulls haircut. He looked a little out of place, and he seemed too young to remember the band and the cheesy cheap video. I giggled to myself and hung out with my girls, we were having a great time. and I raaaaa aaaan, I ran so far awaaaaay. Guess who was the first guy to ask me to dance? Yep. I didn't want to tell him no, besides he was wearing glasses and I love boys who wear glasses. We danced, and danced and danced. He was pretty good! I raaaaaan for night and daaaaaay. Then he says to me "Do you know how to dance like they are?" He was referring to some of the couples who were dancing a little closer in the traditional way with thier bodies closer together. Another Groupon dud.... This is how they get you nowadays it seems. Restaurant had less than 10% occupancy when we arrived but the Groupon said "need to make reservation" so I checked if they would accept the Groupon. They accepted after some reluctance but sometimes you just wish people were not so nice :-). Why run a promo if you don't want customers to use it??? There was only one server handling patio and dining area and she could not keep up. Food was below average at best. It was a slow night and it did seem like the previously mentioned 10% patrons were mainly friends or somehow related to the staff. They also charge a 20% gratuity for all Groupon customers which is OK but should be disclosed before hand. Wasn't even close to a **** rating in my opinion. Usually sugar makes up for everything in life (even subway cookies) but this was a rare occasion when I did not finish my dessert and did not want a box for it. read more

I love reggaetón,& the music here is amazing. But, I was there on Saturday for my first time and i waited 35 minutes to use the restroom. Then the woman taking care of the restrooms was letting women who were paying HER 5$ in to the men's restroom. WHAT!! (this location has 1 , ONLY 1! restroom only for each gender ) This location didn't have gender neutral restrooms and didn't we just pass the law of gender neutral restrooms at public locations? anywho- the fact that we had to pay to use the restroom is ridiculous. Waiting for a restroom for 35 minutes is also just insane. NEVER going back here... Which is a shame because your DJ is amazing. read more

It's like you're in Spain! I've been to Spain and it definitely takes me back. The tapas are cooked to perfection and authentic. The sangria is sweet enough that you forget it has alchohol. So watch out! Service is prompt and helpful if you can't decide what to order. The decor and atmosphere is festival yet relaxed. Best time to really experience Spain is Thursday to Saturday nights when they have live music and dancing. Flamenco is fascinating to watch! read more

Despite all the reviews about the bad service, gladly we did not experience that at all. We got there with about one hour to spare for happy hour. So of course, we ordered and order and order some more before we hit the 7pm "no more happy hour" time. The ambiance was so pretty! We sat outside and the view of the street was nice, décor was very Spanish and pretty, and we loved the outside lighting that they had (xmas type lighting but nicer...big red bulb lights). Even the inside was very cute and the bathrooms had cute decor too and well kept. They had very unique drink and appetizer selection. The drinks were good and the appetizer were AMAZING! We tried almost all of them and they were all very delicious! We even had 2 desserts at the end of the evening and those were to die for (flan and another chocolate berry type dessert). Happy hour prices were from $3-5. not too terrible. Our server was very bubbly and happy and attentative. She was our main server but there was always another server that would sometimes accompany her and sometimes take our drink orders as well. And once we even had another man who seemed like a manager come up to us and ask how everything was going. So everyone was looking out for us and that was nice. They did have flamenco dancers more towards the evening but they were inside. We had a minimal view. But if you want to enjoy them, I suggest you ask for the area in which they perform. Overall, we had a very nice time, loved the food and décor the best, drinks weren't bad, service was good, and parking wasn't terrible either. I'm storming out. The staff was totally not attentive. We had to ask for refills multiple times of our mimosas. They messed up out orders and the food was not that great. My friend asked for her sauce on the side for salmon and it wasn't. The taste of the sauce was not great. Also I asked for my steak medium rare and it wasn't. We had a huge party of maybe 15 people for a birthday. This place is so much fun, you start dancing as soon as the band starts. We got there at 1030, and the band was still testing sound, so we ordered drinks to wait. 1030 is when the live music band starts to play for the salsa dancing. It looks like a small restaurant bar but once the music starts, EVERYONE and their mama was on the dance floor. There were more men than women...but it may have just been my group. We had a team of Latino soccer players ... and me. yea. That's how i roll apparently. The dance floor is small, under the platform where the band plays, but they clear the hall and the restaurant area of the tall stools so you basically dance where you find room...which i think is awesome. Everywhere you went, people were moving and swinging to the music with you. The music is really catchy and you can't help but move to the beat! They played salsa, merengue, and cumbia mostly. The margaritas are really yummy. You can't taste the alcohol so much, but they were quite strong and the drinks come in tall glasses. The Petron shots were chilled which is the way I prefer it. The sangria, I did NOT like. It was thick and murky and just too much for me. It may have been the atmosphere so I preferred something icy and cooler. Everyone else loved it though, so try it with dinner, it may pair better there. We also ordered 3 tiered platters of appetizers. The top layer is nachos, the second is salami and some other cold cuts, and the third layer is fried calamari. All three were really really good, especially when you are sweating and dancing your butt off!!! Everytime I sat down to rest, I'd pick at the food, and they are lifesavers. Ladies, wear something comfortable to dance in. It gets insanely hot and crowded inside. I chose to not wear heels, but slippery ballet flats, and I am SO glad I did. The service was so bad it was almost comical, except for the fact that my wife almost got branded on the face by one of the waitresses: when the waitress brought out my paella, she accidentally hit my wife with the hot plate, burning her nose. Anwar told the server that everything we ordered was going to be on the house because we had gone to their brunch earlier and it did not meet our satisfaction. Anwar went out of his way to make sure we were treated like royalty, the server William Ventura never had us waiting for our drinks or food. Yelp also gives a a $10 discount to be used for an appetizer. It's located in the prime Long Beach Down towm area, i didn't have to drive because my friend and i live only a few blocks away. We were a group of 7 and came here on a Friday night. Everything ran smoothly until the flamenco show started. Once the show began it was extremely difficult getting our waitress' attention and service went downhill. Otherwise, the mojitos were yummy, the empanadas were tasty which came with a side of chimichurry, and the food was on point. We especially liked the guacho steak which was served with an incredible creamy spinach sauce which made it delectable. I came back here last night and had absolutely fabulous service, so I'm upping them a star. I think it's a really lovely place to go anytime it's not crowded, i.e. anytime but Friday or Saturday late night. Sangria, delicious as usual. I ordered a salad sans chicken, and they dolled it up for me with tons of veggies to make up for it. Hows that for great? The super nice attentive not too pushy waiter also brought us bread fresh out of the oven (yum) AND informed me that the veggie soups are always vegetarian, as are the desserts!!! Go figure. What a fantastic time at Alegria last night! I came with a group of friends to celebrate my lovely gal pals birthday and we all had one of the best dinner outings, thanks to our awesome superstar server, Kevin! He may just be the best server I've encountered in a very long time. Full of character and genuine smiles, not only did he provide us with excellent service, he made wonderful recommendations on libations and dishes, was well-versed with the menu and each dishes ingredients, answered all of our questions, kept us entertained, induced plenty of smiles and laughs until our faces hurt, checked in on us and made sure we had water topped off, and even more importantly, our sangria glasses constantly filled with fruity wine filled deliciousness. Sangria flights are the way to go! PS: The pineapple mojito also gets an A+. If you only order one thing, it needs to be a Humitas Chilenas as a starter....or two or three. Taste bud happiness right there, folks. The perfect balance of sweet and spicy in the melange of goodness. Do it up, don't be shy. Kevin also got his entire section involved in making my friends birthday that much more memorable. He got everyone in the room singing to her and then showed up with some sweet-tooth satiating desserts. We got the chocolate strawberry dessert and the bread pudding. Both very good. The chocolate mouse one was rich, creamy, and just the perfect amount for sharing. I look forward to coming back again soon and checking out their brunch and happy hour. In reality, the food is more like 3 stars, but the sangria and the music bumps it up to 4. :D Went last night with roomie for a friend's B-day... first off, I was kinda turned off by the menu note that stated, "For parties of 8 or more, there is a $12.95 food minimum per person". Excuse me? :p I guess it's the cheap skate in me. I've just never seen that before. Anyways. Roomie and I ordered a pint of Sangria and the filet mignon dish. The sangria made me nostalgic for Peru!!! :( It had pieces of fruit in the glass, and it was sweet and delicious. The filet mignon was a perfectly cooked medium, and the potato cakes it came with were pretty yummy. Portion was a little small for the price, so roomie got the Ropa Vieja (shredded beef) tostadas. Pretty good... a little greasy for my tastes. After about 10:00 pm or so, some of the tables are moved to the side and the orchastra plays salsa very loudly. Forget conversation! Good thing I love to dance. :) My girlfriends and I boogied on down to the teeny tiny dance floor and had lots of fun shaking it and watching old doods twirl skinny young chickies so fast, we could barely make them out. :) A good time, in all. read more

So....A company either signs up to be featured on Groupon for 1 of 2 reasons. 1) Business is BAD (for a reason) or 2) Business is OK but needs a push to promote the great products/foods/services offered Alegria Cocina Latina falls under reason #1. Groupon, I boycotted you for 5 ENTIRE days after my experience (or lack thereof) here. Within 5 minutes of being seated in the restaurant, I noticed: there was only 1 waiter for entire restaurant (who was huffing and puffing and rushing all around with sweat dripping from his face), and I also noticed that on a 92 degree day in Long Beach there was absolutely NO A/C inside the restaurant. My boyfriend and I had to move outside it was so uncomfortable. BAD IDEA. So, 15 minutes pass after arriving at the restaurant, and all we received was water. No waiter or waitress had visited our table yet. Enjoying watching everyone else get served and waited on, I see a young lady enter the restaurant. The front of the house lady pointed to the tables she would be serving. I thought oh, great. We waited for our waitress to arrive to work. STRIKE 1. So the waitress visits our table and takes our orders. Pretty hungry and annoyed by now, we just wanted her to get our food order in. But, before she could do so, she had to go take the orders from ALL the other tables that had not been waited on yet. So, 15 minutes later (30 minutes from the time we arrived at the restaurant), my boyfriend points out that the watress was entering in all the orders at once. This in the industry is called "stacking orders." STRIKE 2. So, seated on the patio now for 45 minutes without our entrees, I witness another table complain about their food and drinks (because it was taking so long.) The waiter hustles and bustles, and gets them what they ordered. As I look across the patio floor to the left of the restaurant, I see a HUGE ROACH just running around from the restaurant enjoying himself and the nice sunny day. I instantly jump up and watch the roach run over another lady's foot (who didn't realize). With my hand over my mouth I sit back down and watch the roach just running around. The male waiter must have saw me because he comes outside with food for the table behind me and just STEPS ON IT nonchalantly, as to hide it so no one would see it and make a fuss. He keeps his foot on it. He sure fooled the others but not me. The biggest PROBLEM is that I just heard and had to witness this roach murder. STRIKE 3. My appetite was lost. I was disgusted. I left immediately. Off to The Federal. They definitely had a Groupon deal here for a reason bad business and horrible food. No one even said anything to me after I explained what happened to the front of the house and why I was going to leave. They sure made it a point to cancel my OpenTable reservation once I left. I don't know why everyone has raved about this place. Food is actually bad... very few places I will actually say this to. The service was good, but the food was so bad that I can't even give it 2 stars. Overall, the seafood was old, overcooked and the sauces were bland and nothing special. Ordered: Tapas Frias - Nothing like I was expecting. We ordered this all the time in Spain and it was fabulous there. The selection of cheeses and olives were nothing spectacular. Zarzuela De Mariscos - The seafood was so bad. It smelled like old seafood. I actually couldn't even eat this dish. After a few bites, I couldn't get past the smell. I love seafood and I was so disappointed in this dish. Camarones Al Ajillo - The shrimp was way overcooked and rubery. The sauce was nothing special and I felt like I could get a better from canned/frozen sauce at Trader Joes. read more

Alegria is a fun place to eat, especially in a group. There's a wide selection of tapas that can satisfy almost any palette and on the weekends they have a Flamenco dance show that is pretty cool. I had high hopes for this place but, like the mosaic flooring of this restaurant, they were smashed into itty bitty pieces. Food: The meal began well... almost too well. Ok, not true. The views of Pine Ave. are pretty interesting if you want a good/free show. Service: Our waiter was all smiles but he forgot our order and seemed to be avoiding us as we angled for the check. He did allow us to move inside when the temperatured dropped, however. Synopsis: A beautiful exterior can't fool me. It's what's inside that counts, and by inside, I mean what's inside my belly. I was looking forward to our Friday night reservation. It was our first dinner in Long Beach. We were there for a weekend conference for work. I was with 2 colleagues and we were ready for some tapas and adult beverages. We ordered 4 tapas: 2 with crab, one with shrimp, and one with Ahi tuna. All were yucky, especially the sinewy tuna. We started with Sangria and the fruit was nasty. I then moved to the margarita and that wasn't much better. To add to the enjoyment, there was this group on the back patio who had an intoxicated woman puking right next to the window in full view of the inside diners. She could not walk, could barely stand, it was only 7PM. We quickly paid our tab and moved on to the Rock Bottom Brewery for more appetizers, beer, and dessert. read more

Last Friday night, my husband & I went on date night. We took the metro into Downtown Long Beach (don't like to drink & drive!). We wanted to try something new and Yelp pointed us to Alegría! We arrived early for a Friday night & there was no wait at all to be seated. The decor was cozy, bright, & fun. Our waitress was sweet, attentive, & very helpful with food recommendations. We ordered Jamón Serrano for our appetizer & it was flavorful & fresh. For our main course, I ordered El Gaucho & my husband the Solomillo. Both dishes were really well done & flavorful. The meat was plentiful and tasty & the potatoes were used sparingly to compliment the meal instead of being used as a filler. The spinach was perfectly seasoned and cooked. We ordered a carafe of Sangría and we decided that it was definitely the best Sangría we've had. My husband also ordered a Mojito, & I have to say, it was spot on! A lot of Mojitos are too sweet or syrupy. This one was fresh & light, exactly how a Mojito should be! There was a live band in the bar area. We couldn't actually see the entertainers because a wall blocked us but we could hear. It wasn't the best band but they definitely were lively and enthusiastic! I highly recommend Alegría! read more

Came here with a Groupon worth $30. I had ordered over $60 of food from the regular menu at regular price to comply with the Groupon. I also ordered $30 worth of drinks because it was Happy Hour. They didn't want to grant my Groupon because I had ordered Happy Hour drinks, regardless of how much I had spent to satisfy the Groupon. After some haggling, they agreed to give me the Happy Hour drink prices. I don't like to haggle, just do what's right the first time and treat your customers right. The food was ok. I ordered the Whiskey Salmon with sauteed vegetables and jalapeño mash potatoes. Sauteed vegetables turned out to be a bunch of broccoli and I couldn't taste the jalapeño in the mash potatoes. Salmon was decent. Others at my table also said the food was ok. Regardless, we made the most of our afternoon sitting outside on a nice day in Long Beach. My friends and I dined here for her birthday. They had arrived earlier than me and ordered a mn appetizer. It took more than 30 minutes for ceviche!!!I guess they were still slicing up the ingredients!!! Once we all arrived, it was difficult to find our server to take our order. Then it was difficult to understand him. I have a seafood allergy with the only exception of crab. My hubby asked for the crab cakes, but the server gave some explanation that we couldn't understand why I couldn't have the crab cakes. Then my hubby asked again when he returned to verify that they were out of crab cakes. It was too challenging to understand what the case was so we settled for the nachos. They were good, but nothing spectacular. Our group ordered from the dineLA menu with the exception of the braised beef ribs since they were out. We ordered the paella Valencia and mole enchiladas. The mole was good, however the paella just tasted oily with not a great amount of flavor. If your looking for a great paella then go to Felix continental cafe in Orange, CA. My friends had the paella, salmon whiskey, pollo mole, and el gaucho. They all said their food was ok. The server forgot one of our paellas, which it took by the time we were almost done eating for it to arrive. My girlfriend was upset that it didn't have the mussels in it like the others. Some of my friends ordered the sangria and highly recommended it! I can't say to the taste as I am pregnant at this time. At the end of the night, our server has brought dessert for everyone, which was nice. The chocolate tres leche cake was the best! That I would recommend! Where do I begin...I know it is long but bare with me here. I originally bought a dinner and flamenco show for my fiance for Valentine's Day. I called and made a reservation and asked the person on phone if I needed to be there any earlier than when the show started at 7:30 pm. He said no, be here at 7:30. That Saturday, we came and we taken to the bar to wait to be seated. We stood there for 20 minutes, and by now that show had already started. I went back up to the front and asked when we would be seated? She said, "oh, well most people get here between 6-6:30 pm for the show." UH, well why wasn't I told that over the phone or when I got to the restaurant. I was pissed and asked to speak to the manager. He came over and apologized and insisted we stay for dinner. He did not even to bother or offer to comp us a drink or appetizer. Just staying! I went back up to the front desk and made a reservation for the following Saturday. The following Saturday, we got there at 6:15. When we got there we were informed that people do not arrive until 7pm and we would not be seated until 7:15pm. Obviously no one knows when you need to get there which is very annoying! They told us we could wait at the bar and our server would come get us and take us to our seats. Well, no one came to get us and I had to go flag down a waiter to find our table. Lucky for us, the same manager I was a bitch to last week was there and gave us the best table in the house and comped our 2 picthes of Sangria. Their saving grace were the flamenco dancers. They were amazing and we very much enjoyed the show. The service was slow and bad, we constantly had to flag someone down to take our order or refill our drinks but we did have amazing seats. The tables were too close together. I was terrified that my hair was going to get in the table behind me's candle and/or food. They tables were wobbley and cramped. It killed any intimate dinner I was expecting. The food was good but the portions were very small considering how much I was starving by the time the show started and my food came out. The sangria was okay, it tasted more like just than wine. I would not go back just to have dinner, but I do plan on taking my mother in law there when she comes to visit because of the flamenco show. read more
