After sightseeing and eating elsewhere all day, we stopped here for a quick salad before returning to our hotel. It was late, so I wanted to eat something light. Since I had eaten way too much pasta, cheese and pizza over a seven day period, I needed something green and healthy to balance out the carb overload. I ordered the Mediterranean salad. It was just okay. In my opinion, it is hard to go wrong with a salad, but this one was not good. It had too much mozzarella and not enough salad greens. The salad dressing was blah. The staff were not very friendly. My assumption is that there is a lot of restaurant competition in that little stretch, so the goal is to fill the tables with diners spending money on larger meals and drinks instead of just salad and still bottled water. After realizing that the salad was a waste, we ordered some penne pasta. Like the salad, it was nothing special and it was actually reminiscent of the frozen penne pasta at Trader Joe's. TJ's frozen pasta is not bad at all, but I would expect the restaurant to be different. read more

Located across from the Trevi Fountain, al Picchio seemed very packed every time we came down from our apartment. That's typically a good sign. So when we spotted a free table on the bottom half of the restaurant, we proceeded to seat ourselves. We didn't have one waiter, it was rotation of waiters that happened to be near us for different reasons. One person took our drink order. Another for the food and so on... We ordered... 2 bottles of Peroni (beer) Caprese salad Lasagna Pasta Primavera Tiramisu 2 cups of coffee Everything was fresh and tasty. We requested red pepper flakes for some heat. By the time they brought it, we were almost done. Although the service we received was by all the staff and I didn't know who to ask the bill from. The food is good but the service is super slow. This is something you should be prepared for and not take too personally as this is the norm in Rome and southern Italy. Definitely worth the try. read more

It pains me to leave a bad review but this was not the authentic Italian experience my friend and I hoped for. We ordered a margherita pizza expecting to get fresh sauce and slices of real mozzarella. Instead, the pizza was sprinkled with grated mozzarella cheese which resembled American feeling pizza. After slogging through 400 people all crowding around Trevi Fountain, all I wanted to do was sit down, relax, and try some of the food that Rome is known for. Typically, I have reservations about trying places right near main attractions like Trevi Fountain, because I think a lot of them are complacent with their convenient locations and therefore have mediocre product, but I didn't feel like aimlessly walking around through massive crowds for much longer. So it was kind of through dumb luck did we end up at Al Picchio. It's located maybe a block east from Trevi Fountain, and is one of many restaurants that look similar to one another. Entering the establishment is an old-fashioned restaurant that has that look of and old family dining room, with red-checkered tablecloths, and what looks like mom watching from the cash register in the corner. The servers all seemed to speak English well enough, so for an American tourist like myself, it was no problem communicating. From what researched in advance on dining in Rome, I knew there were a few things that I wanted to try: pasta with Bolognese, fried rice balls, and fried artichokes. I was pleased to discover that Al Picchio had all three available, although I was unfortunately informed that since it was not artichoke season, the fried artichokes were not available. So pasta and rice balls it was. The spaghetti with Bolognese was savory and meaty, and I enjoyed it greatly. The rice balls were a little bland, but if that's the way they're supposed to be, I didn't have any objection overall, and I ate them as eagerly just the same. What I found myself enjoying about eating pasta throughout Italy is just how cheap it is. Al Picchio was no exception to my opinion that pasta is reasonably priced for such a good local staple. Overall, I have no complaints about Al Picchio. They're conveniently located near a major landmark, the staff was English-speaking and friendly, I didn't have to wait long for a table, ordering, and food to come out, and the pasta was delicious for not an expensive cost. I would definitely recommend that this place is not a bad call for anyone in the area. read more

Popped in for a quick lunch. Was pleasantly surprised to find this place on the middle of tourist madness. The price was good and the pizza was great. The service was friendly, but once the place became a bit busy, the service became a slow. Recommend this for a quick lunch where it does have a bit of local flavor. Don't forget to tip! We ate pizzas in other places and they were amazing. I asked the manager to charge for pizza and not the pasta and he refused saying pasta is good not their problem if we didn't like it.
