Scallops and salmon poke bowl, customized
Kathleen W.

I enjoyed my poke bowl at this place but they just give slightly less food overall than other poke locations I've been to. I was still full when I finished though! Ingredients tasted fresh and I like that they didn't charge extra for the seaweed salad. They also are reasonably priced for the protein scoops and give you a decent amount. Also has more variety of protein options compared to other places--you can't always find yellowtail (extra charge!) or scallops. We got ours to go and got our orders within a reasonable time frame. The restaurant itself is also in a great location in the hub bub of Scottsdale, a really nice option for fresh food.

Great fresh ahi poke, like Honolulu ahi poki. I am living Oahu for over 20 years, honolulu don quixote sale poke similar flavor .

One of my wife's favorite comfort foods (and food in general) is sushi and we see poki bowls as just deconstructed sushi so it is a great way of getting more of what we like without feeling like we are getting too much =) Ahipoki has a fresh menu where you get to make your own bowl from a number of ingredients. The portion from scoops is a little smaller than our local poki joint and there wasn't as much seafood variety but for the most part, we were pleased with what we got. Prices are fairly reasonable for fresh seafood and such and portions are pretty good. Service is fast and friendly and you get some deliciously fresh food. Seriously Subway has nothing on them, eating fresh shouldn't be attributed to old deli meats.

Fresh, tasty, and generous portions! Loved the poke bowls and refreshing drinks. Great service and friendly atmosphere -- highly recommend!

Large salad with Kimchi shrimp and Tuna

My go to place for a healthy delicious lunch. The food here is always fresh. I get a large salad the comes with 3 choices of protein. Love the fresh Tuna. Also get the Kimchi Shrimp. Yum. Lots of options for toppings. I pay extra to add a scoop of avocado. Usually go with their house sauce. Always quick service so perfect for a fast lunch.

Robbin did a fantastic job. She was super sweet, patient, and helpful. Not to mention, look at the gorgeous bowl she created for us! We will definitely be coming back soon because of her (:

The salmon was great quality for this local poke shop, some pieces even had that "melt in your" mouth texture, better salmon than some of the other poke shops I've been to in CA. I got the blazin salmon not sure if that meant spicy but there was no spice to it at all. The tuna was decent and the octopus wasn't too chewy. Wide variety of toppings! They are a bit stingy with the fish scoops as other poke shops are. $13 for a large and this is an Arizona location so getting fresh fish delivered is probably a factor of their costs. It seemed like a lot of locals came passing through so I definitely recommend this spot!

This is the original location that haas been there for years, but they've expanded to a few other locations. This location is small but it's cute and the staff is really friendly. You can order online for their regular menu but they had some specials this weekend (sign up for the emails because you can see the specials at leach location and you get a code for a free cookie for your birthday) so we called in. Food was ready in 15 minutes. We got the lobster roll which is Connecticut style-my preference-with lots of butter! They had a fish and chips special so we got that too. And a pb&j cookie for my birthday! My husband very recently broke his leg so picking up Chulas with some great lobster was a nice treat! It's not inexpensive but you get what you pay for. Very fresh, high quality seafood. They have great poke and a great fish market if you want to pick up raw seafood to cook at home. Definitely a little gem in SoSco.

Being the desert, the quality of Seafood is important, since we are nowhere near seawater and the reputable Chula Seafood is here to serve us, desert dwellers, well. TUNA MELT- it's refreshing to have a tuna sandwich that is not canned tuna. There is a chimichiri sauce that you can get to drizzle on it that really gives a depth of flavor. The bread was a nice sourdough that was not just a cheap white bread and did not get soggy. However, with my sandwich, the bread was burnt so that bitterness ruined the flavor of the delicate fish. My pictures shows a few burnt spots, but on the bottom side was way more burnt and it was like they put the most burnt side on the bottom to hide it and hope I didn't notice. I did not appreciate this. CLAM CHOWDER- creamy and more on the fluid consistency, being made with fresh clams makes the difference. Not the best chowder i've had, but was pretty decent. The fish variety can vary with seasons, but it is nice to get different choices throughout the year. There are limited offerings here compared to the bigger location across town, as far as menu and fish selection. But for a small store it is a good place to get some quality seafood to take home or sit and eat. Check out the great happy hour deals

Where you go down the line and call out what you want. Food: Some the containers were pretty much empty; who wants the remnants of spicy tuna? I asked if there was more and the women reached under the counter and pulled out a fresh bowl. Then proceeded to dump the remnants and scoop them out for me. Gee, thanks! That was not a good look for them. In terms of taste, the Hawaiian tuna and the spicy krab mix were the best. Rest of meh. Skip the shrimp though: zero flavor. The overall quality of the items: veggies, etc were fresh. Service: Aside from remnants issue there are some things they can work on to have a better customer experience. - Sauces: Have cheat sheet that explains each one and what they go with best. Like with Hawaiian Tuna goes well with XXX,etc. - WAY too heavy on the greens when skipping rice. I get it that you want a full looking bowl, but I didnt order a salad. I specifically said "Light" lettuce, yet still got a full bowl. - Small, medium, large: Instead of listing ounces, list scoops. I ordered a Med, thinking that is two scoops, but it's three. Which is a good thing, but I didnt know that from reading the signage. Overall: Its a bit pricey, with a fountain drink you are over $20 for a medium bowl. I would come back again, but it's 2X of some premade bowls @ Sprouts, etc. Its definitely better than premade, but I am not sure its 2X better.

When we walked in it had a very fishy smell, so it kind of made us second guess our choice. But we went for it anyhow. The greeter/server was very pleasant and sat us. It was very clean inside with ample space between seat. We browsed through the menu and started with our usual edamame and pot stickers. The edamame was salted well throughout where a lot of places just put the salt on top only. We ordered a couple varieties of sake which were both good. Out of all of the things we ordered the karange skewer was just a little more oily than were use to, but still good. The spicy salmon roll had really great flavor and the lollipop roll was probably one of the better versions that we have had. The musubi was giant to say the least, it was good, but offered a bit too much rice. Overall the food and service was great and we were very happy that we ended up here!

I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!

I went on Saturday lunch so I suggest maybe going for dinner or mid afternoon so you dont get stuck with eating leftover rice from the night before. Or just dont get rice on your order. Also after eating the whole thing i left still hungry. They could stand to make their burritos a little bigger. Also I got a tuna burrito and it had hot and cold toppings mixed in which made the fish lukewarm when it reaches your mouth which was super unappetizing. The sauce was put on the fish so the toppings like vegetables all get mushed into one spot with no sauce while the fish is soaked with sauce so you have to take a small bite out of each side to get a good combo of sauce. But the toppings were SO dry it was hard to eat. They really should put all the toppings in one bowl and mix it all so everything is mixed well before putting it on rice which further dries out your mouth when you take a bite of the dry toppings. They also dont cover their toppings so the fish is just left in open air all day. Considering fish attracts flies there would be no doubt a fly could have landed on the fish you are eating! I get not covering the toppings, but leaving fish out like that is kind of disgusting. One thing I did appreciate was whoever did the hiring hired 2 workers who altho looked like they didnt want to be there (but who really wants to work at a place like this on the weekend), they were still kind, helpful, and answered questions, as this was my first time here. It was smart to have a camera facing the line so they could go in the back to be on their phone rather than some fast food places where you can see them just sitting on their phones behind the counter. When a customer came in they immediately came out to help them. It was nice to see. Also they have a sign in there that states "local, healthy, raw" which i find misleading as theres no way their ingredients could be locally sourced as theres no body of water for fish to grow in arizona so they would have had to source the fish out of state, making it not local. And the fish does not taste very fresh. If it were local fish it would taste way better than wherever they get their fish from! So i found it odd they would claim to be local. Also the only raw thing in this burrito is the fish and a few of their vegetable toppings. And after all the fried toppings, hot cheetos, and sauces i dont know how healthy this is. Certainly less "healthy" than a normal sushi restaurant. But i guess if you compared it to McDonald's i guess it would be healthy. There are signs in here saying they are part of best of phoenix in 2017 and 2019. I cant imagine a place like this being the "best" in the city as the food was just not good. It must have tasted better back then because today the food was bad. So im assuming they cut costs a lot the last few years to the point of ruining the foods taste. Id come back for the service if all their workers were like this. So ill give a star for that. But I dont think ill come back for the food. The rice really ruined the whole burrito as every bite contained the inedible hard pieces of rice. The food is mediocre at best. I left hungry too.
