I live close to Chulas so usually pick it up to go but have eaten in before. It's in a little strip mall on Roosevelt and Hayden. This is the original location that haas been there for years, but they've expanded to a few other locations. This location is small but it's cute and the staff is really friendly. You can order online for their regular menu but they had some specials this weekend (sign up for the emails because you can see the specials at leach location and you get a code for a free cookie for your birthday) so we called in. Food was ready in 15 minutes. We got the lobster roll which is Connecticut style-my preference-with lots of butter! They had a fish and chips special so we got that too. And a pb&j cookie for my birthday! My husband very recently broke his leg so picking up Chulas with some great lobster was a nice treat! It's not inexpensive but you get what you pay for. Very fresh, high quality seafood. They have great poke and a great fish market if you want to pick up raw seafood to cook at home. Definitely a little gem in SoSco. read more

MONGER AMONG US It's great to have a fishmonger in the Valley that sources seafood from boat to table. Being the desert, the quality of Seafood is important, since we are nowhere near seawater and the reputable Chula Seafood is here to serve us, desert dwellers, well. TUNA MELT- it's refreshing to have a tuna sandwich that is not canned tuna. There is a chimichiri sauce that you can get to drizzle on it that really gives a depth of flavor. The bread was a nice sourdough that was not just a cheap white bread and did not get soggy. However, with my sandwich, the bread was burnt so that bitterness ruined the flavor of the delicate fish. My pictures shows a few burnt spots, but on the bottom side was way more burnt and it was like they put the most burnt side on the bottom to hide it and hope I didn't notice. I did not appreciate this. CLAM CHOWDER- creamy and more on the fluid consistency, being made with fresh clams makes the difference. Not the best chowder i've had, but was pretty decent. The fish variety can vary with seasons, but it is nice to get different choices throughout the year. There are limited offerings here compared to the bigger location across town, as far as menu and fish selection. Ordered: Hot Lobster Roll (~$32): Maine lobster, prawn butter, Old Bay seasoning; served with chips Hawaiian Style Poke Bowl w 4oz Spicy Tuna (~$22) & 2oz Salmon (+$5): with carrot, cucumber, edamame, pineapple, seasoned wakame, onion, macadamia nut, sesame seeds, sushi rice, traditional sauce Spicy Scallop Onigiri (~$9) with mustard aioli Ginger Beer (~$3) Aya's take: I never thought I would find good, fresh seafood in the desert but here we are! Chula Seafood has locations in California and Arizona offering a fast casual seafood dining experience. My absolute favorite bite was the Spicy Scallop Onigiri. This onigiri was loaded with fresh, raw scallops that were some of the most tender and buttery I've had. The spicy seasoning was outstanding! I need that recipe asap. The rice to seafood ratio was also spot on and the aioli it came with added some brightness and a kick. The Hot Lobster Roll was another good try with chunks of warm & buttery lobster meat topped with Old Bay seasoning. I think they could have used less Old Bay so I could really taste and appreciate the rich, sweet, briny flavor of the lobster. The roll it was served on was golden brown and perfectly buttered! I like that it came with chips as well. It was pretty simple & clean overall but certainly not on Maine/Boston's level in terms of outstanding lobster roll. As for the Hawaiian Style Poke Bowl which we got with Spicy Tuna & added Salmon, I will say the best part was just that - the raw fish. There's no doubt it's unbelievably fresh, not fishy at all, and had great flavor. I just wish the bowl was more customizable to your liking of toppings. Second time coming here. Today I got the spam musubi and the Dan Dan noodles with ahi. The spam musubi had an excellent flavor! I was impressed. I've had a lot of spam musubi and it was great! The only odd thing is that the rice is not warm. It's not cold and hard but it's cooler than room temperature. I still give it a thumbs up! The Dan Dan noodles also had excellent flavor. Chula Seafood strikes again! This time I came with the intent of getting a lox bagel, because lox duh. They serve up their smoked salmon or lox bagels on Saturdays & Sundays and I had been waiting to satiete this craving from them since my previous visit when I had to make the very hard decision of not getting the lox bagel and opting for their restaurant week menu (no regrets but still sad.) We arrived as close to opening as possible, because I was not going to risk them selling out. About 5 minutes after they opened, we rolled up and were told they had two bagels left! Well luckily there were only two of us, but I was also confused as they had JUST opened.... I am not sure if it was do to a big order, a delayed order or some other unrelated factor, but it is something to keep in mind if you are coming in for that. They have plenty of other offerings, so always able to pivot, but I am glad I did not have to this time. We both got the lox, which was also affirmed by the employee as her favorite. I can't tell you exactly what is on it, but it came out on a everything bagel, a generous serving of lox, cream cheese, pickled red onion, cucumber, I think some kind of pickled pepper and overall was most lovely and hit the mark. Since I was there... I also got a spicy tuna onigiri to go to enjoy for lunch later. It was good, but not nearly as good as the one I had on my previous visit, (It was the restaurant week special, so not totally apples to apples) but fell a bit flat this time around, feeling much more rice, less flavorful and low on the tuna. It did come with the same delicious wasabi based sauce though - It'll clear you right out! Great casual spot, with awesome weekend specials and menu, especially great during these summer months when something fresher juts hits a bit more. read more

I had very high hopes for Chula Seafood and opted for the Hawaiian poke with spicy tuna and salmon poke. The salmon wasn't seasoned at all, but the tuna was good. Some parts of the salmon were chewy and not a great texture. Overall the dish was very bland-- I was so surprised. Even adding soy sauce it still fell short. Service was warm and friendly and ambiance is casual. Might return to try more classic seafood dishes like chowder or something else, but wasn't a big fan of the poke bowl. Have been here countless times and each time has been consistently great. Had some friends in town and they requested to try this place. It was a Sunday at noon and they were fairly busy, but we easily found a table. Ordered at the counter and sat patiently for the deliciousness to come. I went with the Sashimi plater and a Lobster Roll while my wife decided on the Clam Chowder. Food came out quickly and looked amazingly fresh (as always). I disliked having to order standing up at a kiosk and paying and tipping before eating the meal. 2 of us paid $85 for 2 entrees and a diet coke which was only available in a 12 ounce bottle with no refills even they had a full service bar. I had scallops for $41 with 5 scallops totalling 6 ounces and came with a tiny salad..The scallops were lukewarm at best. My bride had the $35 whitefish . I pice of 6 ounces and a small cup of fries. We tried to make reservations online but the system was down but evidently others got through and there were mostly reserved tables leaving us with little to choose from. Came here on a Sunday since so many good places are closed on Sundays. Coming from California I was a bit skeptical of getting seafood front the desert. Other than the prices being a bit high (each shrimp is $4 in the shrimp cocktail) I did enjoy the food. The shrimp was great and I got the Hawaiian poke with spicy scallop and salmon. The salmon is quite bland but the scallop was rich in sauce and was great. The downside of the poke is that there wasn't enough other stuff imo and I felt like I was eating fish and rice. I love fish and chips and was thrilled when I arrived here in Scottsdale and had some marvelous fish and chips at Chula. They were perfect: fresh fish perfectly cooked allowing the fish to be a hero of the meal. Delicate battered exterior indicative of the ideal cooking temperature and duration. Not the least bit greasy. Contrast all of that with the horrifying experience I had recently. It made me want to puke. The fish consistency was mushy and undercooked, while the exterior batter was overcooked. The thing was completely inedible. Terrible experience and a waste of money. We pulled up during Restaurant Week and got their special: $55 for two apps + two entrées Here's what went down... Started with the clam chowder and tuna tartare-- Not gonna lie, I was least excited about the chowder, but it totally stole the show. Like... flavor?? On point. Lowkey best clam chowder I've ever had Then for entrées, they made special dishes just for the week: First up, the tuna kebab--super unique. Texture-wise, it was giving steak not fish... but so good. Then we had the Riverence trout with curry yogurt and cauliflower. This combo?? Genius. So flavorful, so balanced. Oh and... it was happy hour, so obviously we had to order oysters ‍ Everything slapped. Solid 9/10--extra points for the chowder. Will absolutely be back. read more

Food is decent quality, especially for seafood in AZ. Portions are light, prices are high. Biggest deterrent for me: they only serve raw fish and when you aren't expecting that, management and service act like it's advertised everywhere. It's not. Was expecting grilled fish options like at Uptown location (because why wouldn't the same chain have the same options?), and that's apparently not even possible at this location. No grill, no cooktop etc. Just refrigerated fish. And you're an idiot if you ask otherwise. Definitely a missed opportunity by owners to clearly brand Roosevelt as the "raw spot." Wife and I dropped in early Sunday. We traded to/fro re: 3 oysters, green chile tuna melt, cup of clam chowder, and a poke bowl. The oysters were the best I have ever had, albeit a bit on the small side. Tuna melt was a 10 out of 10. Delicious tuna/cheese/green chile. Just the right amount of crunch to the toast. Clam chowder was borderline excellent; and had plenty of clams, onions, and potatoes. Wife's poke bowl was excellent; she had the medium and had a modest amount of leftovers. Our foodserver was a young guy who doubled as the cashier; he did a great job all around as well. Interior of the Bldg was somewhat basic, but spotless and certainly functional. Prices were reasonable, given the excellent quality of the seafood. Took a bit of salmon and other items to go. We would definitely be back often, but we live 40 miles to the north and are not in South Scottsdale very often. Great place, though. read more

Overpriced for what it was the seafood was just OK. It looks more like a cafeteria than a restaurant to go in for two people and pay over $130 without alcohol is a lot of money. We had two entrées and an appetizer I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more
