    Poke nachos
    Jordan H.

Was craving some Tuesday night sushi and decided to pop in for a light dinner! I like what they've done to revamp the place since taking over (moody lighting, murals on the walls, etc.). However, they do really blast the music. I'm not a huge fan of loud music while I eat, so if you aren't either, this might not be the spot for you. Let's get into the food! We took advantage of their happy hour and tried a few things including: 1. Edamame - I am a bit picky with mine and prefer it steamed without excess oil. They serve theirs pan fried, which I was not a fan of (personal preference of course!) 2. Cali roll but better - pretty decent roll for the price! A little sweet for my taste. 3. Spicy tuna crispy rice - a very one note dish that didn't particularly highlight the fish well. Just tastes like spicy mayo on crispy rice, so if that's your thing, you'll like this one! 4. Poke nachos - the best happy hour dish I tried. Served on 4 chips and was fresh, with depth in its flavor 5. Amber after dark - not a happy hour item, but a delicious roll. The best dish I tried here by far! 6. House white wine - can't beat a $6 glass of wine to go with sushi :) I will say, the best part of our visit was the service. The hostesses were so welcoming, the staff constantly refilled our waters and checked in on us, and we never had to wait too long for our next dish. Not sure if I'd revisit for dinner again, but maybe just for a drink/quick bite. Overall, glad I stopped in to try it out!

They charge a venue fee. This restaurant is a Americanized version of Japanese food. If your looking for authentic this isn't it, Scottsdale has a lot of other more authentic sushi restaurants. It was nice vibe more like a bar for cocktails and some light bites. I had the Scottsdale rolls and they were too sweet. I had salmon nigiri and the salmon pieces were so small. The fried crab rice cakes were okay. The rice bowl we ordered was good but the hot clay bowl it was served in kept cooking the food and started burning the rice. It was so hot. My cocktail was very good. The main reason for my low rating though is they have a hidden fee on the receipt. They charge a 4% venue fee. We didn't know but they did tell us if next time we don't want to pay it we can let them know? Weird.

Drinks were good and the food was solid overall. Server was great. They don't have happy hour yet, but the staff said it should be starting next week. It felt a little pricey, especially given the limited pescatarian and vegetarian options. Drinks are abut $20-$25 each which is a lot - even for old town. The vibe was a bit mixed--the music skewed younger, so it didn't feel especially romantic and there's a lot of bar seating inside so maybe it's more of a casual pace? That said, the location is great and the patio outside is really nice. One big downside: there's a 4% service fee added at the end with no explanation or signage, which is why I leaned toward 3 stars instead of 4 (I'd say it's more of a 3.5 overall).

I saw this new restaurant on instagram and knew that I need to try. We went for early weekday dinner right after they just officially opened. Rose tteokbokki is tasty with delicious boiled egg. It is unique and different from traditional tteokbokki I had before. Bulgogi bokkeum udon noodle is good but a bit hard to eat with chopsticks since the noodle was cut short, not long. The chef choice sushi has wonderful presentation with cute tiny details. Vanilla pudding with pear is so good and I wish I got some more.

This place is quite special, offering high-quality asian dishes in an upscale, almost club-style ambience. The service was very friendly and knowledgeable. On Friday early evening, the place was rather packed but we got a nice table close by the dj. There is also less noisy outdoor patio although understanding the theme, the music was not too loud inside either. I ordered bibimbap which was one of the tastiest ones I have tried so far. Elegant and well balanced flavors. This place is a great new addition to the Old Scottsdale restaurant offering, so we'll be back soon again.

Shiso definitely has 5 star potential but everything was a little off during this visit. The menu looks incredible and the ambiance is solid, but the service and food weren't quite there this time. Hoping it all comes together on the next visit!

Checked out Shiso for their grand opening and it did not disappoint. The place looks amazing--super clean, modern, and has a really good vibe the second you walk in. Food was great, presentation was on point, and everything came out quick. You can tell they care about quality and the overall experience. Staff was friendly and the whole night ran smooth, especially for a grand opening. I'll definitely be back. Espresso martini was amazing the roast me softly had the cream which made it top notch

Before anything else, the wagyu fried rice is going to be a regular comfort meal for the rest of my life. The portion sizes are impressive and easily shareable, which is rare with the standard portion sizes in restaurants of this caliber. Not to mention the edamame is beyond addicting. The bang bang cocktail is delicious, as a tequila drinker, having a mixed cocktail that branches outside of a margarita available on a menu is refreshing. The staff is willing to answer questions and make the effort to double check on anything if you have food allergies or particular tastes, which again is very refreshing. With the helpful vibe of the staff and the gorgeous decor, it's hard not to enjoy this place.

    Hawaiian Paradise

This place replaced The Drunk Monk and turned it into a tasteful, chic sushi spot. The vibe is warm and upscale without being stuffy, and the service was phenomenal. I'm not usually a sushi fan, but the Tokyo Gold roll ($18) and pan-fried chicken gyoza ($12) were so good they might make me eat sushi every night. The Nashi Nights cocktail ($16) was perfectly sweet (exactly how I like them) and dangerously delicious. Highly recommend -- we'll be back!

100% WINNER! Good food! All about the vibe, great lighting, music & staff is digging it! Top notch & is a fore sure must eat! Shisooooo baddd!

Came here opening weekend with my husband and some friends. Our server was very bubbly and friendly, she took great care of us. We ordered multiple different starters, rolls & cocktails. All were super fresh and yummy. The crispy tuna rice, hawaiian paradise (roll) and Nashi Nights (cocktail) were all my favorite. We sat outside, gorgeous patio with great lighting. Super cute and inviting. Will definitely be back.

The food was amazing! I loved this glass noodle dish and their Scottsdale Sunset roll was one of the best rolls I've had in a while! Their service was great, Jacob was our server and was super kind and helpful! The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and unique!

    Gyoza

This might be my new favorite restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale! The drinks, food, and atmosphere were all amazing. I'll definitely be coming back. Our server was fantastic and took the time to walk us through the menu, which made the experience even better. The owners are the sweetest and were so personable and made us feel so welcome!

They have a table or two outside but they're not setup for outdoor seating, fyi. The restaurant is nicely decorated and dark, which took some getting used to. We were greeted warmly and chose a booth towards the right. I had noticed their lunch specials offered M-F 11-2pm so we both ordered from that menu. I got the L/Cali+Shrimp Tempura Combo: California Roll (Half Size), Shrimp Tempura Roll (Half Size), Gyoga(3PCS), Miso Soup. My companion got the L/Rainbow+Dynamite Combo: Rainbow Roll (Half Size), Dynamite Roll (Half Size), 2PCS Nigiri (Chef Choice), Miso Soup. Our soups were brought out pretty quickly and our food not long after. For the price point ($12) and quantity, my lunch special was definitely worth it. It came with 10 California rolls, 5 shrimp tempura rolls, and 3 gyozas. I was pleased to see their gyozas have chicken in them, usually they have pork so I can't eat them. I love their purple rice - so unique. I don't think I'd tried it before and it was good. All of the items I tried were fresh and flavorful. Service was great and I was surprised it wasn't busier during their lunch hour. Maybe later on or dinner gets more of a crowd. I'm glad we tried out this spot and I'd love to come back!

I also ordered salmon skin and here is where the star deduction came into play. The salmon skin was served to me the way I asked - no rice, no sauce, no vegetables - BUT, it was burnt. So if I do go back, I would probably request them NOT to cook it so long. I ordered my husband a spicy tuna roll and a spicy salmon roll to go. He said the spicy tuna was good but the spicy salmon wasn't - it was as if the salmon quality that was used was poor.

The edamame was salted well throughout where a lot of places just put the salt on top only. We ordered a couple varieties of sake which were both good. Out of all of the things we ordered the karange skewer was just a little more oily than were use to, but still good. The spicy salmon roll had really great flavor and the lollipop roll was probably one of the better versions that we have had. The musubi was giant to say the least, it was good, but offered a bit too much rice. Overall the food and service was great and we were very happy that we ended up here!

I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!

We'd walked in a few months earlier, and earmarked it as "A birthday kind of place". You feel like you've stepped into heaven. So, for my birthday we planned accordingly and went there last night. Taylor was a wonderful server. Our drinks took a little longer than she would have liked, and I could tell by her demeanor. Still, it was a blessing because we were able to take in the entire energy of this magnificent restaurant. When she came back, she encouraged us to place our entire order. At first, I was concerned as we wanted the night to last. But she assured me that nothing would be rushed, and she was correct. We ordered the chicken thigh and scallop skewer. Man! These were amazing!!! The presentation fantastic on a little coal stove and the taste was out of this world. I'd be happy just enjoying a few skewers for dinner sometime. My old fashioned was also wonderful. Then the rest of our meal arrived. The Bone in Ribeye, wagyu fried rice and mushrooms. All, just amazing. The fried rice topped the list for me. Just as we started eating, I felt an unexpected raindrop that had not been in the forecast. We ran inside with everyone else. And what a gift it turned out to be. Although we adored our table in heaven outside, we now had a completely different vantage point being in this hip and trendy bar that was stunning in every way. And despite the chaos, the service remained exemplary. Taylor asked if we needed anything else, and I merely asked if they had any bread. I was uncertain with it being a Japanese steakhouse if indeed they had rolls or bread. Well, even though the kitchen was wrapping up for the night (it was close to midnight), she managed to get me one of the most decadent things I've ever tasted. The Japanese Milk Bread. WOW!!! It was a magical night and will remember it for many years to come.

This completely changes the experience. I don't like the cheese on sushi and having it served by a backup guy just doesn't do it. Used to love this place but questioning their direction. Great news, they have replaced the lettuce with cucumber! Maybe chef got some negative feedback.

Nice having the ordering tablet on the table,…read morejust like in Japan, though the descriptions were generic and unhelpful (all said the fish were high in protein and nutritious for rebuilding muscle). We asked about the fish of the day and special fish which happened to be the same, mackerel, the day we went. Interestingly, the servers had no idea about the fish aspects of the menu and everything was deferred to the sushi chefs. Ordered a few temaki (hand rolls) - yellowtail and spicy tuna- and they were tasty! All the nigiri we ordered were fresh without fishiness, and had generous portions for the price. Nice to have fresh wasabi which had a nice kick and sweetness. Thoroughly enjoyed these nigiri: seared black cod, ocean trout, hamachi/yellowtail, unagi. Yuzu & rainbow rolls had super appetizing sauces. Ordered the uni from Japan which was supposed to be sweeter than creamier but this one was very distasteful for me, had a strong scent like saliva, and I was unable to tolerate it.
