This was the most authentic and delicious japanese restaurant that I have been to in years (yes, YEARS!) anywhere in the united states . It's a small restaurant run by Nihon-jin and staffed with culinary wizards. The waitstaff was attentive and helpful in making our food choices. We had three different waitresses constantly bringing our food and filling our glasses throughout the. There were six of us. The surrounding tables were all filled with Nihon-jin - a very good sign! We had gyoza appetizers that were the BEST i've had since leaving japan! It was cooked properly, which is PAN seared on the bottom. And the rest steamed with soft, chewy dumpling skin and tasty filling. Another appetizer was a plate of little sausages that came with a side of shaved cabbage. I heard they were good, but didn't try any myself. When I looked at the menu, there were so many various types of sushi! It was written in both japanese and english. They had a picture menu as well as a separate. Sushi menu. I had the kanpyo maki and also a futo maki roll. The other people at our table had katsudon, (one made with chicken and the other with pork), a plate of sashimi, a nigiri sushi combo, and several types of rolls. I chose Hiyashi Chuka, (cold ramen) - a chilled noodle dish popular in summertime. The toppings were sliced pieces of tender pork, surimi, wakame, carrot and cucumber slices. The dressing for Hiyashi Chuka is a sweet-and-sour soy sauce dressing (or tare). In fact, I usually take pictures of all my food and I was so excited i didn't take any pictures of the food or menu! I told my sister we have to go back there today so that I can take some! I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are looking for authentic Japanese food made by Japanese people. We have been coming to this place for years and get sushi here regularly. I talked to one of the women who works there with regularity to the point where she knows that my son has a sesame allergy and can tell. It's me when I call to order. They are always providing excellent service and the sushi is fresh as well as the other Japanese food, which is quite variable. The Ramin is excellent and I often get a bento box. The restaurant is a combination of a traditional sushi bar and tables. They also have a variety of a typical fish such as Shima ahi and Kinmedai. We love it here. read more

The curry was sweet, perfect accent to the savory chicken. The rice was soft and perfectly cooked. My friends ordered ramen and sushi rolls. Happy hour menu had decent deals but was a limited selection. We had the spicy tuna roll, crunchy roll, chicken katsu curry, and the happy hour gyoza. Bill came out to 80ish (including tip) for two people. The sushi was decent, curry just alright, and gyoza tasty but needed a thicker sauce to pair with the crispy fried shell. I loved their unagi donburi and chirashi don, you can taste the freshness of sashimi. The beef and tofu sukiyaki is a warm appetizer to start a meal, and the amount of meat was quite generous. The dynamite was on the heavier side, it tasted good but better to share with others. The ramen in noodle combination was a small portion, and I really liked this combination because you can choose two smaller dishes. The quality of food in this combination was still there. To celebrate our wedding anniversary my wife and I enjoyed lunch @ Sushi Sen in Scottsdale. The atmosphere inside/out had a relaxed and welcoming feeling. Not a huge space but it felt larger because of the high expansive ceilings. When we entered we were warmly greeted and seated. The menu was expansive so we were happy we previewed the menu at home. We both settled on the Bento Combination. You get to pick one item from each of the three categories (Sashimi, Sushi, and A la Carte). I selected the Sashimi - Maguro, Sushi - Spicy Hamachi, and À la carte - Chicken Katsu. My wife selected the Sashimi - Hamachi, Sushi - California Roll, and À la carte - Chicken Teriyaki. A delicious Miso soup accompanied the Bento Box, not too salty or heavy feeling. Our Bento Boxes came out relatively quick, the presentation was excellent, every item was fresh (sashimi melted in our mouths), and perfectly prepared. The portions were perfect (no leftovers and we didn't walk away hungry). The service was exactly as I had imagined it should be, welcoming, attentive, and courteous. Overall, I highly recommend Sushi Sen for the quality, service, and ambiance. Notes/Tips: you could easily miss this location as the only indication of its location is a sign posted high above on an archway (see one of my photos). Sushi Sen is truly a desert gem. My family has been coming here for nearly a decade because of the high quality sushi and good variety of classic Japanese dishes that they offer. The restuarant is pretty well known amongst the local foodie crowd, but it's remained a hidden gem amongst the general public given it's relatively obscure location and lack of flashy presentation or hype. It's just a great go-to place for non-fussy quality sushi. I particularly recommend their Chirashi (assorted sashimi on sushi rice), which is of outstanding value and quality. We went on a Thursday for happy hour . The food was good. Nothing Wowed me. The happy hour sushi roll menu was pretty limited from other places I've been. I didn't have a favorite unfortunately. There was a roll that had eel and octopus that I tired for the first time. It wasn't bad. It was fresh and was not chewy how I imagined it would taste, nor was it fishy. The waitress was great. So when my friend suggested we meet here for a girls dinner earlier this week, I was all in! Upon being seated, I was pleased to see a more extensive dine-in menu (including a great bento box deal where you choose one item from three different categories), and a nice cocktail / wine / saki list to... Service was on the slow side to start but it was fine after we ordered. The sushi was all very good but some of the cooked food was blah ie: hamachi kama and chicken teriyaki that were served with our bento boxes. One friend had a noodle dish and enjoyed that. There's a sushi bar and also a small outdoor patio to enjoy nice weather. Space heaters are available. My go to most of the time are: agedashi sushi and edamame beans to start off. Then nigiri or sashimi (salmon, toro, yellowtail). These are always fresh. Cooked rolls: dragon or caterpillar roll. Then for dinner entree, I love the eel in the box, pork katsu curry (dinner portion), and tonkatsu ramen. The sauces and flavors are so yummy! I love having some of these for leftovers. What I love about this place is how extensive their menu is. They offer many dishes other Japanese places in the area do not. On our most recent visit, we ordered pan fried gyoza, spicy scallop nigiri, sea urchin nigiri, salmon skin roll, spicy scallop roll, and tempura udon. The gyoza, always a classic standard, that one can't go wrong with. The nigiri and rolls were of good quality. Not the best I've had in the state, but also not the worst. Props to the scallops, they were plentiful, plump and tasted fresh. The only dish we were disappointed with was the tempura udon. The broth was overly salty. Generally, service here has been a hit or a miss. Sometimes we've felt rushed to order, other times we've felt ignored. If you're looking for decent Japanese food in the area for a reasonable price, I would still recommend this place regardless of the service. We used to dine here regularly before moving out of state for three years, and now that we're back in Arizona, we wanted to place our weekly sushi order with them. When I called in, I was very clear that we do not eat crab and that all sauces and mayo should be on the side. We spent $129 for two rolls, one order of sashimi, and two orders of jalapeño poppers (with crab substituted for spicy tuna). When I got home and unpacked the food, the jalapeño poppers were filled with crab and covered in sauce and mayo--exactly what we asked to avoid. We called to let them know and even offered to text a photo. The first lady who answered was apologetic and transferred me to someone else who refused to give her name. When I explained the issue, she laughed loudly over the phone, which I found disrespectful. She then said she would refund the poppers but told us never to return to the restaurant. I waited a day before posting this review to give them a chance to correct the situation, but no effort was made and they did not refund the poppers. It's unfortunate to be treated this way, especially as we were prepared to be regular weekly customers. read more

Sushi Sen is the closest sushi place to my house, and my girlfriend and I decided to stop in tonight. We were seated upon entry and we felt right at home. The decor in here is minimalist and sleek. They have this weird statue in the corner that made us go "WTF". Our server was sweet and helpful. This place has some very fresh tasting sushi, I ordered the Dynamite California roll and the Soft Shell Crab roll with fried gyoza. My girlfriend ordered the miso soup. After a session at Perspire Sauna, I was looking for a dinner spot close by. Sushi Sen happens to be in the same charming shopping center, so I walked over on a Tuesday evening. There's plenty of parking. Ambiance (4/5): Pretty much what I expect at a Japanese restaurant. Cool decor, tidy, and intimate. I sat at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. Service (4/5): After greeting us, the waitress was a little slow to come back to take our order, but other than that, she did well. I arrived about an hour before closing, and I'm a slow eater, so I didn't finish eating until half an hour after the restaurant closed. No complaints from the staff until 30 minutes after close as I was finishing my beverage. Understandable, though with a little quicker service, I would have been out earlier, too. Drinks (4.5/5): At Japanese restaurants, my typical go-to is a hot sake and a Japanese beer. Which is exactly what I did on this visit. I went with a Kirin light. They have a nice menu of beer, sake, wine, and liquor (with an emphasis of Japanese liquor and Japanese-focused cocktails (lychee, yuzu, etc.). On Wednesdays, they have a special deal where you can get a bottle of wine and two rolls (from a select list) at a good price. Food (4.5/5): They have a large menu! I'm talking Cheesecake Factory style. So making a decision wasn't easy. Since I'm all about variety, I tried their pick-two combo. On one side, you can select between 10 or so noodle dishes (including ramen). I went with a classic Tonkotsu ramen. On the other side of the menu, you have 10 or so entree options. I went with the tuna poke bowl. Both were delicious. The broth of the ramen was on point. The chasu pork was flavorful. The noodles were tender and cooked just right. Up there with some of the best ramen I've had. And the poke didn't disappoint either. It had a nice sweet sauce and some tempura flakes to give it some crunch. The tuna was fresh. I was expecting smaller portions for this pick two, but they were essentially full portions. So it was quite a feast! You also get a nice side of sliced cucumbers with sesame seeds in a soy sauce-based sauce. When we're talking about quality, Sushi Sen's food was high up there. It's my favorite Japanese spot I've been to since I moved to Phoenix. Since I'm a night owl, I just wish they were open a little later.
