Always consistent and delicious, They are so wonderful and really get to know their regulars so I barely have to ask for a thing when I'm here. Chirashi lunch with generous udon soup on the lunch special is perfect and I always enjoy leftovers!

I stopped into Kodo Sushi Sake on Northsight Boulevard on a Friday right when they opened at 4:00 PM. I was dining solo and had no trouble finding a seat since there's plenty of seating throughout the restaurant. That said, I was surprised by how quickly the place started filling up after opening, which is always a good sign. One of the first things I noticed was the large sushi bar and being able to watch the sushi chefs at work. There were five of them, which I took as a sure sign this place gets busy. I ordered the spider roll, salmon avocado roll, and steamed edamame. Everything was fresh, well-prepared, and exactly what I was hoping for. One unique thing about Kodo is their rice blend. They use a combination of black and white rice, which gives the sushi a distinctive purple color. It's not something you see every day, and it definitely makes their sushi stand out. I also have a food allergy, and the staff handled it carefully and without any issues. They offer fountain drinks, which I always prefer. And I liked their plastic to-go container. It kept my leftovers from getting soggy by next day. Easy five stars.

I want to preface this with I'm kind of a sushi snob because I have one of the best sushi restaurants by my house in Las Vegas that I've ever been to. We decided to try this place while traveling to see one of our friends. This location is in a strip mall it's very clean the service was amazing. Their theme is black rice so all the sushi rolls come out looking darker than you would normally see. The sushi was not bad at all but some of the rolls were a little bit fishier than I would like. I don't remember the rolls and I only took a picture of one of them.

I haven't had sushi in a while, so I suggested this spot to meet up with my boba sistah. We got there a few minutes after they opened at 11am and had the place to ourselves. They have a table or two outside but they're not setup for outdoor seating, fyi. The restaurant is nicely decorated and dark, which took some getting used to. We were greeted warmly and chose a booth towards the right. I had noticed their lunch specials offered M-F 11-2pm so we both ordered from that menu. I got the L/Cali+Shrimp Tempura Combo: California Roll (Half Size), Shrimp Tempura Roll (Half Size), Gyoga(3PCS), Miso Soup. My companion got the L/Rainbow+Dynamite Combo: Rainbow Roll (Half Size), Dynamite Roll (Half Size), 2PCS Nigiri (Chef Choice), Miso Soup. Our soups were brought out pretty quickly and our food not long after. For the price point ($12) and quantity, my lunch special was definitely worth it. It came with 10 California rolls, 5 shrimp tempura rolls, and 3 gyozas. I was pleased to see their gyozas have chicken in them, usually they have pork so I can't eat them. I love their purple rice - so unique. I don't think I'd tried it before and it was good. All of the items I tried were fresh and flavorful. Service was great and I was surprised it wasn't busier during their lunch hour. Maybe later on or dinner gets more of a crowd. I'm glad we tried out this spot and I'd love to come back!

Kodo is delicious! I love their lunch specials, especially the udon and two mini rolls for $18 on M-F from 11am-2pm. The service is always friendly. The restaurant has booths, tables, and sushi bar seating. It can get busy during peak times, but I've never had to wait more than a minute or two for a table. There's plenty of parking outside as this location is inside of a strip mall.

Kodo is one of those places that once you try, it becomes your regular sushi spot. Located a few minute away from the Scottsdale airport, it should be the first restaurant on your list as you leave the airport. They offer plenty of parking. Sitting options are plenty -inside and outside. The restaurant layout is inviting and the staff are attentive and knowledgeable. The menu is simple and offers a lot of sushi, nigiri and sashimi choices. In this trip we got some sashimi, a few rolls and the delicious Ahi Tower. Everything was fresh and tasty. The rolls we got were Blue Ocean Roll, Salmon Lover Roll and Mt. Fuji Roll. If you're in the area, don't hesitate to stop by and give them a try. You will not be disappointed!

Omakase Combination

We came here for dinner and waited a bit since it was pretty busy and we were such a large group. They don't do reservations so you just have to put your name down on the waitlist. Plenty of parking since it is in a plaza. Omakase (4/5): This was 10 pieces of nigiri and a small side of sashimi. Honestly a pretty good deal since it was around $40. Me and a few other people got this combo and we all got different fish for our sashimi. I got yellowtail and it was fresh. here were some raw nigiri and some seared. I don't think they explained the different pieces to us. My favorites were probably the toro and eel. I will say that it took a very long time for the omakase plates to come out. Not sure if they were staggering it since other people ordered normal rolls and plates. The food was definitely good though so I guess I'll let it pass. Everyone else in my party enjoyed it too. This is a great dinner spot but come early to beat the rush.

Finally got to try the famous Kodo Sushi! I'm pretty satisfied with their price and quality. They have reasonable price and their fish quality was good! Had sashimi appetizer- sashimi pieces were big and fresh, and rolls were yummy and portion was good. Also people are friendly here! I'd definitely come back!

Spicy Tuna Roll, Rainbow Roll

Kodo Sushi is absolutely fantastic. I used to come here all the time when I worked in North Scottsdale and hadn't been back in years, so it was great to return. I've honestly never seen this place not busy during the dinner rush, which says a lot about the quality of the food, the employees, and the pride they take in what they do. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and a rainbow roll, and both were equally delightful. Big portions with noticeably more sushi than I expected, especially when compared to other places at similar price points. I can't say enough good things about Kodo from all the times I've been here. I'd happily recommend it to anyone looking to try a great sushi spot.

GiGi D.

Mediocre but I'd be willing to try it again now that I know what I'm getting into. The salmon sashimi I ordered was spot on, and really good. 8 slices for $15 is also the best pricing I have found in all of Scottsdale. I also ordered salmon skin and here is where the star deduction came into play. The salmon skin was served to me the way I asked - no rice, no sauce, no vegetables - BUT, it was burnt. So if I do go back, I would probably request them NOT to cook it so long. I ordered my husband a spicy tuna roll and a spicy salmon roll to go. He said the spicy tuna was good but the spicy salmon wasn't - it was as if the salmon quality that was used was poor.

Christina P.

A hidden gem of a sushi spot! Came in with the husb on a Saturday afternoon so we were quickly seated. The restaurant is medium-sized and has really elegant and tasteful decor - woven basket lampshades, torii gate over the entrance, and a colorful accents throughout the space. Combine that with the dim lighting and it makes for a very warm and inviting space. I'm a Toro lover so I immediately locked in on their signature Kodo Roll that has seared Toro and was really stuffed with ingredients with just a thin layer of rice. Love that they use black rice here! I also adore riceless rolls wrapped in Cucumber so we also ordered the Oasis Roll. Very fresh and crisp. Paired really nicely with the vinegar. Paired our rolled with the veggie tempura and seaweed salad (my husb's must-order). I skipped lunch so I was still a little hungry. I decided to add the Mango Crunch Roll to get some food diversity as it had salmon. Another smashing hit! All in all, they pack their rolls with a lot of really quality ingredients, a thin layer of black rice, and present them beautifully for your enjoyment. Service was fantastic as well. Everyone was very attentive and our water glasses were never empty. If you're looking for high quality sushi, great service, and a warm unpretentious emvironment, you need to go to Kodo Sushi Sake! If I'm in the Scottsdale area, it'll be my mission to eat here again!

I had such an amazing experience here! The service was truly five-star -- the waitresses were so much fun and made the whole night feel special. We ordered several rolls and every single one was mouthwatering. The restaurant is small enough so you can see the sushi bar from your and watch the chefs make everything fresh, which adds so much to the experience. One thing that really stood out to me was their rice options. Their brown rice and especially their purple rice are incredible -- and all of their rolls come with purple rice! It's unique, flavorful, and makes the sushi taste even better. This is the kind of place you come to for both the food and the vibe. Highly recommend!

Kodo Sushi Sake Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Kodo Sushi Sake

Are they open on the weekend ? I can't get the hours to show Saturday or Sunday. Thanks

Yes we will be opened on weekends. Saturday: 4:00pm - 10:00pm…

Do they do hibachi here? I typed in hibachi in Scottsdale and they were listed as number 2 but I couldn't tell from their website?

No hibachi style cooking at Kodo. They do have an Oh My God roll that they finish with fire at the table and it is my favorite, but no table side cooking.

Do they Deliver?

You can use any of the delivery services; UberEats, DoorDash, etc., I've seen them quite busy with delivery orders.

Do they do omakase here?

Yes. Dine in and at dinner hours only

Are all those rolls made with the purple rice and what is the difference with white rice and purple rice?

I did not notice if my rice was purple so I'm going to say that it was white rice

Is there gluten free option?

Yes, they offer a variety of gluten free options and vegan rolls! There is also gluten free and low sodium soy sauce! Kodo can also customize your rolls to be gluten free as well.

I can't eat crab mix, do you guys accommodate taking items off the rolls?

They allow you to sub with spicy tuna for $1, we do this with all crab mix roll since we are gluten free

Do they have uni or yellowtail carpaccio?

Yes uni! And super fresh, one of the only places in Scottsdale I'll eat it at. And yes they have yellowtail

Do they have happy hour?

No they don't. Just today's specials.

Is this the same as the one in chandler?

Yes it is

Do they offer a poke salad bowl?

I don't believe so but their menu is on their listing

Does this restaurant have a Happy Hour?

No.

I stopped in at 5 p.m. sharp on a Thursday, and there was already a line out the door. That said, getting a table for one wasn't a problem. The atmosphere is definitely rambunctious. It was extremely loud and energetic, although no one was being disorderly. Personally, I found it unpleasant. I ordered a spider roll, which is a longtime favorite of mine across different states and restaurants. Unfortunately, Hiro's version didn't work for me. It came with a mayonnaise-style sauce that wasn't listed on the menu, and I've never encountered that preparation on a spider roll before. The pieces were also unusually large and awkward to eat. I would have preferred more moderate, bite-sized portions. I also found the pricing to be on the high side compared with other sushi spots; that applied across the board, from appetizers to rolls. I'm glad I finally gave Hiro Sushi a try. It just wasn't a match for my personal preferences. Three stars for me, but clearly a Scottsdale favorite for many.

I was coming south on North Scottsdale road and turned in to a driveway right before the "Bei" sign on the building and ended up in an awkward narrow back alley behind the restaurant. He saw the pictures of the restaurant on reviews before we went and asked about the robot. We inquired when we were there and the robot can bring you your food upon request. I liked that they have lunch specials. The food was all very good. I ordered a matcha drink as well, which had a really good cold foam on top. The service was great. We were a party of 12 visiting on vacation, and none of us are from the area. We ordered spam musubi and a chicken skewer as appetizers. Both appetizers arrived well after our entrees had already been served and we had essentially finished eating. Each time we asked about them, we were repeatedly told, "They're coming." Mind you, these are simple appetizers that should not take anywhere near that long to prepare. When we asked for the third time, we finally asked that the appetizers be cancelled since we had already finished our meal. At that point, the gentleman working the front area , tall, with red hair, loudly yelled from across the restaurant, in an extremely rude and confrontational tone, "It's already on the grill!" There was absolutely no reason to speak to paying customers that way. His response was unprofessional, unnecessary, and honestly created a very hostile and uncomfortable feeling during what should have been an enjoyable dinner, especially while our group was on vacation and simply trying to enjoy a meal together. When the appetizers eventually came out, we left them sitting there because we were already done eating and ended up taking them to go. He eventually told us they would be removed from the bill, which we appreciated, but that did not excuse the way the situation was handled. Again, the food was good, but good food does not make up for poor service and especially not for an employee speaking to customers in an aggressive and disrespectful manner. Management should seriously address how customers are treated, because the interaction with this particular employee overshadowed what could have otherwise been a good dining experience for our party of 12.

The place was buzzing with loud electronic music and tons of people dining -- I think because the ceiling is so high the noise is amplified. Because it was so busy it took a while for the server to come over but he did with waters which was nice but then the menus are all on QR codes -- which is annoying because it is hard to look at everything and because the menu is very confusing it would have been nice to see everything on paper. The menu is confusing because the selections are very odd -- I thought it was a mexican-asian/sushi fusion restaurant -- which I guess it is but it was still really hard to create the best food experience when I couldn't see everything available. My friend was hungry so she immediately put in an order for calamari and I was being called to order the blood orange margarita slushie. When the margarita came it was like nothing I have ever seen before. It looked more like a milkshake or like a creamsicle. I dove in thinking it would be too sweet but it was actually quite delicious and I sucked it back in a second! Also I put in an order for the edamame which sounded really good in the description -- "woodfired" and spicy miso butter -- but when they came they were really spicy and the woodfired element was making me cough, strangely enough -- I couldn't finish them! Finally after waiting forever we got the drinks and apps. It then took another 15 minutes to order our food. Again it was busy and my friend and I were catching up so it wasn't a big deal. We wanted a fairly light dinner so we just ordered one roll -- the Fuego, which had yellowtail and a whitefish, chili, cilantro and cucumber plus a pico de gallo on top -- it was very flavorful -- although a bit spicy for those who are spice wimps like me. Overall, thought it was a good meal but wasn't blown away.

I heard they were good, but didn't try any myself. When I looked at the menu, there were so many various types of sushi! It was written in both japanese and english. They had a picture menu as well as a separate. Sushi menu. I had the kanpyo maki and also a futo maki roll. The other people at our table had katsudon, (one made with chicken and the other with pork), a plate of sashimi, a nigiri sushi combo, and several types of rolls. I chose Hiyashi Chuka, (cold ramen) - a chilled noodle dish popular in summertime. The toppings were sliced pieces of tender pork, surimi, wakame, carrot and cucumber slices. The dressing for Hiyashi Chuka is a sweet-and-sour soy sauce dressing (or tare). In fact, I usually take pictures of all my food and I was so excited i didn't take any pictures of the food or menu! I told my sister we have to go back there today so that I can take some! I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are looking for authentic Japanese food made by Japanese people. There is such a wide variety of food that you would only get in Japan & never heard of before in a stateside restaurant. This is my new favorite Japanese restaurant! It will be yours too!

I found out about Sushi Sen via IG ads back in 2021. Upon my first visit, I immediately regretted…read more waiting months to go and try it and then moving away shortly after This place offers great value for money and the food is so authentic the menu is written in English AND Japanese. Most if not all staff are Japanese. I've been coming here for years now and my parents who reside full time in CA love coming here. We actually make the drive from Peoria to Scottsdale just to eat here whenever they are in town. My mom loves to bring friends and family who are visiting from out of state to Sushi Sen. Lots of Asians & other Japanese ppl who eat here so it passes the vibe check. 100/10 recommend

first off, service was great!! no issues at all with that, the food was just VERY very bland. i got…read moremiso soup & spicy edamame to start off - miso soup tasted watered down & spicy edamame had no flavor to it. i then got the vegetable spicy wok n roll entree with an upgrade to udon noodles, that also was VERY bland & had no spice whatsoever & i even asked the server if it is spicy or just some spices added., she told me it would be spicer than the other options. (not her fault she is a server not a cook & i appreciated her giving me feedback). i even added sriracha & chili oil & it still was very unflavorful. the texture was good everything was cooked correctly just very bland that i only took three bites. i took it togo knowing i can add seasoning at home & obviously tipped 20% as the service was great & not their fault i didn't like the food, but just keep this all in mind if you decide to try it! i make my own udon noodles-miso soup- & edamame at home often & it's very hard to mess up the flavor so idk if it was an off day, but definitely wouldn't order any of those options again. i know i could of said the food didn't taste good, but the server was busy & i felt bad as someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for 8 years now as a server/linecook/manager. i wish it tasted better than it was because the ambiance was amazing as well!! i feel like its easy fixes to make it more flavorful. if you aren't use to Japanese or Chinese cuisine im sure it would be good, but someone who eats it often it did not have the expected/known flavor it does elsewhere. to the owner, i did not keep my receipt so i cant show proof but i am being honest & did dine in on 9/28 around 1pm. i sat at the bar top & got two drinks plus the three food items.
